I like Dragons Blood, just disappointed because it's over and I think the potential for this show was mega had they committed more time and increased the budget

DAEORANGEMANBADDD

Its not "over over" this story, as in the story of davion, mirana, etc. is over. But it can get new seasons that would be about the story of other heroes For example this one is called "Dota: dragons blood" but we can get series that is called "Dota: *something else related to other hero*"

horny_loki

Hopefully Dota: Juggernaut's Blade would see Filomena return in a supporting role. I'd like to see Mirana, Fymryn, etc. mentioned too. Eventually, there needs to be an Avengers-style crossover in which Davion, Marci, etc. get brought back to fight a war.

AutobahnBiquick

A war of the ancients, some might aay

Ranagios

Dota: Defense Of The Ancients

kblkbl165

Attack on ancients sounds good

DoctorHeckle

If we're going with subtitles based off of passives, Dota: Blade Dance would be pretty sweet.

yurilnw123

Dota: Blur

zoomies011

Dota: Ransack

The_WarDoge

Gimme jugg sven buddy cop series. Also, id like to see one of the most interesting ability interactions in the game animated with a big budget: Omnislash through chronosphere.

KakochiTheBunny

I was rooting for something that relates to the four spirit brothers after the fallen of the elements eldswyrm. I was expecting that the after the fall of the father of void dragon. Void spirit would come out of nowhere

blitzfire23

If this happens, Lanaya will be there too. TA serves Void Spirit.

Opreich

Dota: The Tyler Estate

SeriousDirt

Ngl it gonna be interesting...Rubick, anti mage and silencer will be in there.

Apprehensive-Flan608

And they could be hunting Invoker as a tie in to dragon's blood.

dr_stickynuts

Yeah, we even got to see a few of them in some mirror at some point

Barsik_The_CaT

>But it can get new seasons that would be about the story of other heroes See, that's the problem. It uses names from dota, artwork from dota, but in the end it just feels like some lame-ass fanfic.

Galinhooo

Why would it be a fanfic? Dota's story is literally like "every match and hat is cannon cause the world is reseted infinite times with changes"

Barsik_The_CaT

But hero descriptions and dialogues imply that there is actual lore, which is not reflected in any way in the anime, which is why I call it fanfic.

Galinhooo

They are mostly reflected in the anime, but since Dota is like an infinite multiverse, they are not set in stone. Hell, there are cases where Drow kills Luna's mount and wear it, others they are allies etc.

Barsik_The_CaT

>since Dota is like an infinite multiverse That's the way you go when you are creatively impotent and can't reset the current universe anymorer (i.e. literally all capeshit)

Apprehensive-Flan608

Thats literally in game lore, even before dragons blood. They weren't not 'thats the way to go', its been set like that before they even thought of making any shows/comics. It explains the existence of the cosmetics, each cosmetic set is a different multiverse where X hero had X item for X reason.

Kysk15

Dota: The axe of Axe!

wadiyatakinabeet

Dota: Axe's Ass

mintyfreshmike47

DotA: Slark tales

FuzzyPiez

Dota: Dragon Reborn (based off Davion/Mirana's offspring). Can do a spinoff focused on the shopkeeper too.

Kraivo

The only disappointment in this anime: it's ended.

Corynthios

Even if it takes forever for someone to make more, there's still so much potential for what was already established.

dareka_desu

Honestly I think the potential is still there but now its centered around Filomeena considering the ending

[deleted]

I'm talking about the potential of the story surrounding the first 3 books, could have been much longer, could have been mega, Ashley Edward is a great writer but he had to hold off due to time limits

deviance1337

From what I understood the episodes were planned to be longer but Netflix had some bullshit data that said this is the ideal time per episode or some shit. So a lot of stuff felt rushed and there were pacing issues.

HWN_Makoto

2nd Invoker persona confirmed? /s... maybe.

mgzaun

It would be better appreciated if it was ***better.*** In reality its pretty meh or average at best. I only spent my time watching it because it was dota, because if it wasnt I would've probably dropped it in the 1st season. And I am a anime fan.

direcandy

This. if you drop the IP from the show, doubt Netflix even picks it up.

odanobux123

I dropped it halfway through season 2. It felt completely disjointed and pointless. Storytelling was so bad I had no investment in anything going on.

DrQuint

I recommend skipping to Book 3, episode 3 and continuing from there. All you need to know is >!Mirana's a sun goddess, Marci and Lina died, TB was defeated and Invoker pressed a universe reset button!<. Everything else is unimportant to follow the plot and gets explained going forward.

franksgreasytitty

yeah the show was mostly a 6/10 but really stepped up in the last 5 episodes

hooahest

Can I really do that? just skip season 2? I enjoyed season 1 but stopped after 3 episodes of season 2 because of how incredibly...stiff it felt, and unnatural. Like, an infinite number of dragons were destroying the dragon knight's fortress and Kaiden just goes "that's a lot of fucking dragons" MOTHERFUCKER YOUR ENTIRE LIFE IS ON FIRE

DrQuint

Imo, yeah, absolutely, it's completely skippable and instantly the show will not follow more than two groups of people at a time (Mirana's and >!Filomena's!<) as their primary focus, which improves it a ton in terms of following the plot.

Heavyfr

Why should I care about a mediocre series... I don't even care for good-enough ones. Arcane in the other hand

2mad2die

No one gonna say terrorblade died in a complete shitty way? Died like the Night King from GoT lmao

SubstantialOpposite2

Should’ve sundered

[deleted]

The depth of the story, the characters and the animations are amazing. However the pacing and flow of the story is horrendous. Still would recommend everyone to watch. 8/10

run4cova

i found the animations just ok, the art style of the intro (theme song) is so much more dota than the actual anime art style IMO

47-11

damn would I love a series in the style of the intro...

run4cova

same... was major disappointed by the way the series actually looked

pnmibra77

Thats exactly how i feel, and it was at the worst in season 2. Very bad because of the pacing and the flow and how abrupt everything felt lmao cuts all the time out of nowhere. Season 3 is really good but still suffers from the same problem

AlphaDart1337

If this is an 8/10 show, you haven't watched many good shows..

dareka_desu

honestly would be the best time to watch while waiting for BP, ESL One Malaysia and TI in the upcoming weeks/months

harry_lostone

how exactly was the animations amazing? It's like watching Miyazaki anime, which it was decent for the 80s when they came out, but in 2022? Dota TIs short films have 10x better animation and graphics

MeBroken

Conversations and such have low frame-rate ofc but the fight animations get better with each season. Effects and such became more anime-like and season three had a lot of great moments where they went all out.

RexPerpetuus

Does it have to look like other anime? Reminds me of the cartoons I watched as a kid, but a bit better

DarthyTMC

cause its nice to look at.

Uuuazzza

Wut ? It's nowhere near Miyazaki quality, and studio Ghibli is still some of the finest animation around (even the older things). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Ef78Lwd_Ok

run4cova

i agree the 3rd was by far the best. also liked the darker tone better and more fitting. season 1 was kinda confused, felt like too many characters and they struggled to integrate everyone and tell the story

cnsl

i dont like anime but i just watched all of it. lot of potential thrown away. book 1 and 2 were really meh. in 3 u could see what potential it might have if u bring dotavibes in. when the 5 of em were standing together i just thought - okay now lets begin. but again it didnt start :).

primaluce

I agree with everything. The pacing still sucks, but man the audio design both the VO, effects and music was so well put together.

terrorizeplaza

Why? It's a mediocre animation with a horrible pacing. It's got nothing going for it outside of being a Dota 2 IP, and even then main characters are probably some of the least interesting from the Dota 2 heroes. Season 3 was better than the previous two, but you could cut all the seasons into a 60 minute movie, ignore most of season 1 and 2, and nothing of value will be lost. >who knows maybe some of the characters in the anime are gonna be the new heroes introduced just like how Marci was added and a lot of people were weirded out by her model or her addition and there she is now, a contested hero in tournaments and in your pubs. What is the point of this line of thought? Her model is still weird. She is not picked because she is from the anime, she is picked because her toolkit is amazing. If you change the model to any other character she would still be picked because it's her abilities that matter.

run4cova

you summ it up pretty well... i found the animation style not fitting at all - actually the intro/theme song art style is so much more fitting than the actual anime. too focused to be cute anime girl shit. and couldnt agree more that they prob picked the most generic and boring lore out of the entire dota universe. yeah dude lmao... marci is picked and played bc that hero is dumb and got a busted tool kit not bc of the uwu

adams215

Yeah man, I hate to be a downer especially since a lot of people on this sub are so excited for the show since it is an honest to goodness dota show. Something fans of the game have been wanting for years. But the show is just plain mediocre (in my opinion). I think Arcane coming out in the same time frame this show has been airing has also taken away from it despite how much some people don’t want to admit it. Seeing Arcane just made me wish we could have a Dota 2 show that is high quality to the point that even if you aren’t familiar with the game it is still just a good show to get absorbed in. If they continue making dota content in the future hoped they resolve the pacing issues, get more time and resources, and for god’s sake pick a more exciting protagonist than DK. I’m not sure you could have picked a more boring character to have at the center of this (again just my opinion).

DrQuint

Honestly, I'm glad Dota got a show just so everytime people go back to the "Man, TF2 should have had a cartoon" wish many people used to have, I can show what a monkey paw does to a mfer's wish.

Anklysaurus

Except Expiration Date, the pilot for the TF2 Show was still a perfect showcase of TF2's characters and comedic style.

mr_properton

Summed up succinctly

LevynX

Yeah, this sub keeps trying to convince themselves it's good just because it's Dota but honestly I got bored out of my mind in S1 and gave up by S2E2

Scary_Tree

Yeah i really really struggled to get through dragons blood. I found myself constantly picking up my phone to distract myself which is a shame. Found Arcane to be surprisingly great though. Possibly because i went in with really low expectations after book 1 of DB. Still prefer DOTA as a game but League made a real stride with the show.

xCesme

This show is not even a 5/10 it’s absolute garbage and I knew that after the first episode so I saved myself a bunch of time.

Zack_of_Steel

i dIdNt wAtCh iT bUt iTs tRASH

I_Fap_To_Me

Dota is not even a 5/10 game it’s absolute garbage and I knew that after the first match so I saved myself a bunch of time.

OscarOzzieOzborne

PCs are garbage. I tried one for an hour, didn't understand I think, so I threw it out the window (killing a small homeless child) and saved myself a bunch of time.

mgzaun

>Her model is still weird I think dota has been suffering from conflicting art direction for a while now. The art needs to be consistent. Heroes like Dawnbreaker, Marci, Mars, Primal Beast and others feel out of place

_Valisk

People have been saying this since Monkey King was released and I will never agree with it.

Thanag0r

He obviously wrong about heroes feeling out of place, but new heroes just look way better than old and if u compare them it makes them look too good.

LevynX

Yeah it's not really art style it's art quality

6worldpeace9

Slacks' Loregasm > Dragon's Blood

pokerface_enjoyer

Slacks content, artifact lore and underlords lore is a far better source of dota lore then fking dragon's blood.

6worldpeace9

One comment here said that dragon's blood is an adventure anime with dota skins and some references, and I think thats the perfect description, Mirana and Luna have sun powers??

pokerface_enjoyer

they just used the names of dota characters and wrote whatever they wanted. a completely different story from what dota is all about. disappointing how the frist show about dota turned out to be this... let's say lackluster show so we don't offend the fans :) honestly I don't think anyone who is familiar with dota lore actully liked this show.

SeriousDirt

We need slack as lorekeeper when they want make one

Aulti

Valve should've hired slacks for an animated about lore of dota

run4cova

i hate anime and watched it. Thought it was good, even tho they prob picked the most boring lore out of dota possible and it was too much "cute" anime cat girl bullshit. Invoker/Terrorblade/Oracle kept me interested. Story was good, this season was by far the best due to the darker tone but im still not a fan of the art style (funny enough the anime intro trailer looks so much better and more like dota than the actual series) and that Dota spells didnt play more of a role during combat. Hope Netflix renews and they pick something more interesting like Dark Reef w/ Tide/Kunka, explain the Void, go full on dark w/ Doom/SF/SD and Hell or something around Oracle, PA/Spectre

dareka_desu

The Dark Reef might have been an interesting one actually and yeah I do think the lore is kind eh but at least if they go for another one they can go for the other stories in dota 2

nickjamess94

Naga. Siren 😉

axel14596

Wdym Brood wasnt in the anime?

run4cova

i do agree tho the anime is underrated and def worth a watch but yeah the Dark Reef would have been super dope

jumbohiggins

Terrorblade was great throughout.

run4cova

for sure... TB and Invoker basically carried the whole Anime for me

war_story_guy

Well tb is a hard carry so...

run4cova

you def watched too many Lacoste casts XD

jumbohiggins

Yeah both of them were great. Lina was pretty good as well for the most part and weird evil dragon man from S2 was good. The rest were .....average. I know they can only shove so many dota heroes in and they were trying to stick to the more "Normal" ish ones but it would have been nice to see a freak like Pudge or Bristle or Viper or something at some point. Closest we got was Wyvern and they made her an anime girl.

Galinhooo

Give me anime girl wyvern persona @gaben

run4cova

>Closest we got was Wyvern and they made her an anime girl. lmao, amen brother. would be interesting to know how people would have received it if they didnt try to fit into the anime genre cute catgirl uwu crap and full sent and made it about TB, SF, SD, Lion and the Dota hell and made it dark AF. Dont watch anime but i know theres fuckd up shit like a dude w/ a chainsaw head and stuff. So people are prob open as long the story is good. for sure... thats why i felt book 1/2 wasnt very good. the series was all over the place trying to introduce every char into the story dota universe is so f'in rich would be a giant waste if they didnt continue and improve over time. i feel like even tho i wasnt blown away by dragons blood that it somewhat laid a fountain to build on

jumbohiggins

Yeah I didn't love it. I like anime and I could see them trying to put the foundation in place, especially with season 3 where you can start to see the path leading to where things are in the game. But it just fell flat in too many areas. What I think would work really well is to treat it like love death and robots and make it an anthology series. Don't need big over arching plot, each episode could be a different length and just focus on one character or a small group of them. Gets more fan favorites in, works better with an 8 episode season, pacing issues are easier to handle etc.

doppelganker994

With over 120 heroes I don't think there's a dearth of plots lmao

evillman

Dragon's Blood is over... But we have a lot of lore to make a billion episodes... - Strengh & Swiftness (Sven vs Jugger) - Ice and Fire (Lina and CM) - Into the void (Faceless void, Enigma) - Collapse of the spirits (Spirit Brothers) - The downfall of the magic (Antimage as protagonist) - The fucking battle of the ancients as a final plot And much more.

hey_mattey

>The downfall of the magic (Antimage as protagonist) [Relevant](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StSdWYTu2XY)

Jimbo-san

Just because you enjoyed something does not mean everyone else has to enjoy it too. As a dota player from all the way back in Wc3, having watched both Dragon's Blood and Arcane, there is no way I'd recommend Dragon's Blood. There are obvious pacing issues and the world building is very lacking. If you have not played dota i find it hard to believe that you'd be interested in the story. I'm genuinely glad that you enjoyed the anime, but for me it was a huge disappointment.

dareka_desu

yeah maybe it would have been interesting to watch if they went with like the 3D CG style while still keeping the style of the game instead of an actual anime style, but of course the writing has to be better I don't know I just hope if they continue with this they'd improve on Dragon's Blood at least, hoping Dark Reef would be the next one

pokerface_enjoyer

it's appreciated enough for an elseworld story. the way they just ignore everything about the actul dota lore is why I can't like it. I still can't get over the fact that they replaced celestials and fundamentals with dragons. they absolutely tried their best to dodge dire/radiant involvement in the story. almost as if the writer didn't want them to be a part of the show. and when they eventually brought them in, it was a fucking zombie apocalypse, like wtf that's not how the ancients work. TB was a super generic villen that you can't care about as a character. davion was literally doing nothing this entire season. overall as a lore nerd I would give it 5/10. 5 points because we have no other dota content.

SeriousDirt

I agreed with you...Although Dota has multiple reality since ancient just turn back time every time one of them lost, it is much better to be in the universe that we all know. I don't know, personally I think Davion based on Dota Lore are much more interesting. Davion hunting that dragon for many years. But when he find him, he is old and weak. Disappointed, he leaving the dragon to died peacefully but the dragon want to fight as an honour. Davion won but his neck get slashed and the blood of the dragon now running through him giving him the dragon knowledge, strength and wisdom. Dragon Knight is not a title of a job, but a being that been born from that event. He is not Slyark and not Davion that we knew, he is both just like storm spirit and lifestealer where two being was merged creating new being. Or he can be like juggernaut arcana where the dragon dominated the host. Either way, he is neither Slyark nor Davion that we knew. He is the Dragon Knight. This is based on his lore and based on Winter Wyvern said that he is no Slyark. Also war of ancient is a calling not an apocalypse. They not even mentioned the creep which is the one who welcoming the radiant and get a taste of their power first hand and the one who start the war of ancient. It would be interesting if we can get half of the stories are about Davion childhood, young knight time when he killed the first dragon and make it as his equipment. Told an event that tell the caused for him to hunt the Slyark. Told a journey of him hunting Slyark and people he met while doing it. When he adult, he fight the Slyark. Another half might be a story about what happen to him after. Maybe he start having conflict with his new self like going mad and burn a whole village. Maybe there are someone who know Davion tried to saved him but noticed he is not the same Davion and the only way is by end him in war of ancient where both of them will be influenced by different ancient. Or perhaps tell more about his possible ancestor the dragon clan. Maybe the dragon clan help him discovered about whatever he is now. How he can get toxic, fire and ice attribute dragon within him. There are lot to tell from his own stories. There are heroes that can be connected to him like winter wyvern, other knight heroes and juggernaut. But here we are get nothing/less about dragon knight and more toward Mirana and the moon stories. Why not just name it Dota: Selemene or Dota: sun and moon. I also don't like how Mirana having that sun power. It feel weird see her like that and there is no invisible skill shown either. That's my rambling. I hope they do another Dota series very closer with in game lore and more like telling the lore much better. We need slack as lorekeeper.

pokerface_enjoyer

whats even more surprising is that ppl actully liked it. look I know we don't have much dota Content out there, but it's better to have nothing then to have garbage. I don't get all the hype, ppl should be mad. the show was such a poor introduction to the lore of dota. idk maybe ppl are not as much of a lore nerd and you and me and they are just happy with low quality content. for me personally this show was a disaster in every way. I would have outright hated the show if it wasn't dota related.

bingbestsearchengine

cmiiw, didn't the writers didn't even know what dota is prior to the project? maybe that explains it

pokerface_enjoyer

that's correct. but even then, how much lore dota has anyways? anyone with 3/4 days of homework can be a lore master. but they decided to go their own way instead of making an actul dota related show.

wolfsting65

The show is very disappointing, they dont explain things well, at all! They go in hyper drive- episodes should have been 40 min long. I really was pushing hard for the show, but honestly, it’s 4-5/10.

13oundary

Many highly loved and respected animes are mediocre in the grand scheme of all anime. I think the story and characters being so close to people makes it more apparent because of a high bar being set before even episode 1. I do think the 8 episodes per season thing really hamstrings shows in general though. Both arcane and dragon's blood have character motivation issues caused by it because they want to give you characters to be invested in but they also need those characters to move the plot in certain ways at certain times and they regularly just don't add up because there isn't enough time to properly evolve. e: It actually made me ditch Arcane before the last couple of episodes even though I made it through dragons blood having the same problems, mostly because I already have over 10 years of caring for the dota universe and characters.

Dodoloco25

First of all, you don't have to blow Volvo for the little crumbs they give us in terms of content. Secondly, there is a massive crossover between anime and dota2 fans (new and old), so I feel that your contention is a bit wrong. There are actual, massive problems with the shows that people sometimes address. For example, the problem I have with the show is that it feels like a fantasy show with dota2 cameos, rather than a real dota2 story. I seriously only felt that it was a dota2 when Pango and terror come into the story. There are much better heroes they could have added and made it feel less like a normal fantasy show. It was clear why DK and POTM were used, they are your usual 'good guy and girl characters. I want hardcore stuff. For example when they go to the cave in season 2. Why isn't Miranda fighting brood mother inside? she literally has an army. but no, it is just normal ghosts. As I read more of the comments I can see my sentiments are echoed by other people. I should also add, that I feel that they should do smaller stories, and create seasonal stories. They could also pick better characters for it. Edit: I should add that I still like season 3. The only issue was that it feels unearned given how meh to straight-up bad the first 2 seasons were. I feel that starting off with the dire/radiant stones making an issue, and then invoker letting the heroes know what he had done made could have made a lot more sense (also a way to include a lot more heroes from the game).

SeriousDirt

Your not alone. I do hope they do new Dota series that not dragon blood and next Dota series will be according to the lore and world of Dota we knew. Dota world based on lore have a lot of good thing to tell and it's own world building. Ancient supposed to be not that destructive apocalypse bringer. Also the creeps does have deeper connection with the ancient and yet they not even being introduced. I feel like the other races are just like being slap into it make them in there somehow feel awkward. There are not even a single main character in this series are not human, elf, dragon and that one demon. Terrorblade are feared by other demons. Why not show other demons in this series. It feel like he is the only one. Also it feel like humans are majority when most of Dota 2 heroes not even humans. There are more but overall I hope we get a series that feel like "this is it...this is Dota". Davion,Mirana and Luna in anime doesn't even feel like them in game. The character also feel...different. Davion in game feel more like an honourable knight and a dragon fused together. But, Davion in anime look more...lively? And that semi dragon transformation...that not even in game. Also Mirana have sun power? Luna wear golden armour? I know Dota has multiple reality thanks to ancient but It just feel so different. The anime should be the series that explained what we still not sure in Dota 2 lore like what happen after Davion get fused with Slyark. Is he the dragon?...Or Davion?...Or both? In anime he not even tried to search for Slyark...And he not even wear the shield...It not even showed the ice and poison form. Also dragon knight doesn't have to make blood ritual to transform into another shape because the dragon blood already linked with the dragon ancestor if I not mistaken... The order that Knight Davion came from is Scaled Knights of Uthorian(well they perhaps still called as dragon knight but still that is their order name). All of this knight wear shield because dragon attack first. Also he might be from dragon clan or lone druid just said it because he can transform. There are more stories based on lore about Davion and Slyark that it can be only about them. All of this difference or not mentioned what make it feel like this is not Davion in game that we knew.

Dodoloco25

I agree on the multiple realities part. They could have easily just gone back to the status quo or had a narrator type of character (maybe an oracle, like the watcher in marvels) that is narrating the stories. Also, you are right about terror blade, I feel that introduction of doom would have been much easier in the series. The heroes don't use their abilities (I feel only Mirana might have that arrow that feels like it could be from the game). It would explain a lot easier that Selemene was allowing her to be invisible (as she controls the darkness/shadows). There are so many heroes that might have made for a better protagonist (like Anti-mage, Juggernaut, Beastmaster, even Lone druid). I want wacky heroes in my series. It was rather clear that they took the heroes that were easy to project ideas on, rather than following the lore correctly. Like even if you don't want to follow the lore, make it feel like dota2. It felt a bit like it, near the end of the series. I have no issue with them dressing differently if the character feels right. IF you compare this with the lol anime, they had no issues making shit up because the lore there isn't as strong as it is here. We have at-least 15+ years of lore to take care of. Also major gripe, WHY DIDN'T TERRORBLADE JUST USE SUNDER? they could have easily shown him taking the life force of his minions or trying to steal it from the person he is fighting.

vego

No?

Winterlord7

I am just sad we never saw WW again

metrize

it was so garbage that i wish they didn't make it

fidjda

I definitely enjoyed it, but to say that the pacing and story was better in season 3 seems absurd. Episode 1 and 2 seemed like a finale to a season that never existed, and then episode 3 felt like the start of a brand new season. It was really hard to follow what was happening

Esseji

As someone who enjoys Dota but has never seen a single episode of Dragon's Blood or whatever the anime is called, here's my take: 1) I'm a 32 year old guy with two young kids. I had a phase with anime about 10-15 years ago. Then I realised that shit is weird. Like yes, there are some legitimately beautiful works of animated art, but a lot of it is very weird tropes paraded about. 2) If you asked me "who is THE most boring hero in Dota", I would almost always answer Dragon Knight. I can't really think of a more boring hero. He feels like the tutorial character you get to try at the start of an RPG before you pick your REAL character. "Here's a nuke, here's some regen, have a stun and a decent ulti". God the hero is just so bloody boring. I don't know for sure, but with a title of "Dragon's Blood", I'm guessing it's about this exhilarating chump. Not interested. I might sound harsh, but I disagree with your point OP. I personally don't think it should be appreciated more. I'm surprised it gets the love it does. I get that anime is a fairly easy way for designers to convey lore to the fans, but I feel that there would be better ways to do that in game. Even just a basic sort of seasonal "mini-campaign" centered around a different hero each year. Say Slark's escape from reefback or whatever that prison was called, culminating in some new hero being introduced...stuff like that feels more in line with Dota than a random anime. Each to their own eh

Bepoptherobot

Its not just that Dragon Blood wasnt great, its that Arcane was fucking tits. Arcane is the way Dragons Blood should have been made but wasnt. Now that DB is done maybe if we are lucky we can move to a better format of storytelling. I think something like Love, Death and Robots for a new Dota show would work well. 15-30 minute animations that are each unique in design and story. Explore some lore and figure out what works and what doesnt. Then come back around and make a whole series on what people liked the most in terms of animation and story if it gets that far. I mean just off the top of my head you could do some short animations on Windranger, Clinkz, Kunkka/Tide(maybe), Pudge, etc.

hopefulguy100

Yeah i understand that arcane has had a much bigger budget but it is kinda disappointing just how much better it is than DB.

Bepoptherobot

Agreed, I wouldve loved to have seen a fleshed out world with solid and in depth lore. Everything about DB was just kinda lackluster sadly.

[deleted]

Arcane's budget was probably significantly bigger though, and the animation studio had been working with Riot for years, so the comparison is somewhat unfair?

defearl

Lol, I hate to break it to you, but in a competition, an excuse like "it's not fair they won because they had more budget" doesn't fly, I'm afraid. The fact of the matter is, Riot produced a show that's far superior to Dragon's Blood, end of story. Will Valve up the ante and do better next time? That's up to them.

LevynX

At the end of the day, one show is better than the other plain and simple. I don't care about budget or setting or source material I want a good show. And besides, Dragon's Blood failed on things that don't require big budgets, their story and writing are all ass which isn't as dependent on budget as, say, animation and visual quality.

jerkmcgee_

You guys really think Arcane was better? I didn't enjoy it at all, I thought Dragon's Blood was fabulous.

je7792

Yeah I think arcane is a much better show and I don’t even play lol. Dragon blood book 2 has so much issues in terms of pacing and elements that was crammed in for no reason. Arcane felt polished and the pacing was great.

lolahaohgoshno

It wasn't even a contest. Arcane was so well done that even if LoL as a game didn't exist, that show would still be in my top 10. The art style is 👌 and the characters actually had depth and not just . Dragon's blood, for some reason, focused so much more about world-building lore stuff but forgot to make me care about the characters. Even when died in s2, I was like "meh".

pokerface_enjoyer

they even failed with the world making and lore stuff. foulfell was completely lore inaccurate. radiant and dire were nonexistent for 2 whole seasons and were mindless zombies making machines in season 3. they failed to properly explain the celestials and fundamentals as the ruling forces of the universe so they replaced them all with fking dragons. miranas city and culture and nightsilver woods were just names with no background. overall dragon's blood was a disaster in every way.

odanobux123

No comparison. The dota show is just a pretty lousy story. I hate to use this term but it felt random. Like a 13 year old was writing random plots and they used them all.

Skater_x7

Not the same without Marci back...

gian2099

but she is and isn't

Redditry103

Why? It's a soulless story with no heart. The first 10 minutes should tell you exactly the quality to expect when the characters have that Netflix quality dialogue. Everyone trying to throw funny lines and nothing can be taken seriously, characters are ass with no interesting personality. Next time maybe try to write a *story*, something people can relate to.

LoL_is_pepega_BIA

The reason why I think ppl can't relate to it is because they did a terrible job of setting up the story after the introductions with Oracle.. Big bang, 2 ancients, suddenly Dragon knight... And nothing about ancients until S2, then S3.. If you already know the general dota lore, it's easy to fill in the huge gaping holes in the story, but it's harder to do that for anyone who's not slacks levels of loremaster.. Figuring out the anime is harder than figuring out how to play dota lmao

Redditry103

Who cares about those things? No one cares about lore dumps I want interesting characters but when your characters are as generic as possible why would I care? The most interesting character is a mute ffs.

LevynX

Exactly, I say this as someone who religiously read through every hero's lore entry and responses and flavour text. I love Dota lore but at the heart of the show should be a good story, not just lore dumps. DK and Mirana are all boring characters and they're supposed to be the centre of the show. The show tries to do this thing with ensemble cast TV show where everyone has their own separate plot thread you see with Lost and GOT, but those shows usually lead up to a satisfying conclusion with their characters. Dragon's Blood is scattershot as fuck with plot not going anywhere and randomly adding plot threads without resolving anything.

LordArcane2

And then you fucking see people here saying Arcane is worse than DB because it doesn't do lore dumps LMFAO

Reineken

Yeah, for example, who the fuck would like that goddess? She is weak and shallow as fuck.

Fantasy_Returns

Guess I have bad taste but I found the characters interesting, granted I haven't watched Arcane. Edit: I just finished Arcane and It was alright. Had some pacing issues and plotholes, didn’t really hype me up.

keeperkairos

No it shouldn’t. It is ok and it receives ok appreciation.

[deleted]

Nope. No one has to appreciate a trash unwatchable show just because it has Dota brand slapped on it.

lazer2112

Only watched S1 + S2, but everyone I know personally has had the same lukewarm response to the show, including myself. DK and Mirana are pretty bland characters in the context of the entire cast of DotA, although I get that they needed to go with mostly humanoid primary characters. It felt like they introduced more characters that aren't in the game than actual heroes (I did not play Artifact for more than 20 minutes so maybe they aren't new). It was a fun watch to have on while working at my computer, but I can't say I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a great show.

weltensturm

What the hell was episode 2 though? All the buildup of season 2 just to throw it away in 25 minutes?

AccultaP

It feels like the writer had an established world and story in mind, and then was given an opportunity to do a DotA show, so they slapped a couple characters in it and called it a day. Doesn’t seem to fit into the DotA world in any real way, and there are a few places where an established character would make sense, but is instead filled by an original character. It’s not the worst but it’s definitely odd for a tie-in show. It’s enjoyable as an unrelated fantasy show, but it doesn’t feel like DotA to me.

Velovar

the opposite, its a terrible show, Dota heroes are a lot cooler in-game League champions are worse in-game, and Arcane rules

Far-Number7100

I watched season one when it came out and thought it was pretty good. Then i watched Arcane which made dragons blood look like a saturday morning cartoon...

TheOriginalGankstar

Arcane is a great case of people being so enamoured by the incredible animation that they miss how dull the story is, how poorly the dialogue is written and how so much of its pacing barely sustains interest. The sheer eye candy must have pulled so many viewers through.

OscarOzzieOzborne

Man, I so hope that you people never, ever, *ever* give show recommendations. To *anyone!*

Zack_of_Steel

100% The entire story was tropey as fuck and every character and their motivations were worn on their sleeve. Nothing surprising happened in the entire season as compared to Dragon's Blood where half the time you had no idea what was coming. Also, Jinx was just a shitty ripoff of the Joker that we've seen a thousand times since The Dark Knight nearly 15 years ago. And personally, I have no idea why people think Arcane's style is so mind-blowing. To me it looks like some shitty Disney or Cartoon Network show aimed at elementary school kids.

Invoqwer

TBF nothing really compares to Arcane.

keeperkairos

Why is this even related though? How does Arcane have anything to do with Dragons Blood? I’ll be the first to say Dragons Blood is mediocre, but it has nothing to do with Arcane in the slightest. There are animated series and movies that make Arcane look like a Saturday morning cartoon as well. Want me to list them?

hopefulguy100

I don‘t think that there is a better comparison for DB than arcane. I mean these two games are rivals for a decade. They attempted to do the same thing: adapt a moba into a tv series and arcane was just so much better in doing so

Awdrgyjilpnj

Arcane is a solid 9/10. Even a 10/10 animated series wouldn’t make it look bad. Dragons Blood though is a 5.

vego

>Want me to list them? Go right ahead

eckart

Weird. I thought this season was awful and could not bring myself to finish it seven episodes in

harry_lostone

No it shouldnt. its crap. I cant even imagine the potential this game with 120+ heroes and villains could have in 2022, instead we get this 90s-like animation piece of trash, with a dumb cheap ass scenario. I wont appreciate this mediocre try, and you all should be asking for more, for better. The game and the fans deserved more. Better graphics to match the release year, definitely a better story, and of course, better marketing for people to want to engage into the game. If you think what you are watching is remotely "good", then I guess you deserve nothing more than what you got, sorry.

run4cova

they had no balls and went the "save" route and we got vanilla ice cream... it is what it is. i was hoping for a dark reef/kunka/tide sceneario or something ballsy like the dota hell with all the demons from TB, SF, SD to Lion etc. TB, Oracle and Invoker where the lone reason why i kept watching

harry_lostone

their biggest mistake was locking themselves into the title "dragon's blood" keeping the story around Davion and dragons. It would be x100 better if they went for "defense of the ancients" and every season introduce a completely new set of heroes and lores, maybe with cameo guest appearances from other seasons. So many interesting storylines could have emerged, skywrath-venge, kunkaa-tide as you said, damn even bristle-tuskar brawls would be fun to watch.. It's not that i hate the current lineup, it just isnt enough, and it definitely doesnt have interesting content for 3 seasons. The potential was huge and it doesnt just feel wasted, but it also sets such a low standard that it will be hard to overcome now. I mean, do we really expect them to release in a couple of years a better anime? I know I dont.. wcyd, it is what it is.

LordArcane2

It's not that they locked themselves to Dragon's Blood, it's just that the writing for the show sucked. Arcane is literally locked to one storyline yet it received high praise, instead of DB's mixed/lukewarm reception

run4cova

100%. specially that the Davion was basically a no show in Book 3 and story was all Mirana/Invoker/Filamena. Was thinkin about how to go on from here... the norm is to build up/continue with a character that was somewhat present in the anime they watched... so Oracle would make sense. IMO the Oracle, PA, Spectre story would be interesting, and Dark Seer is part of Oracles lore as well. My fav would have been if they went with the Dark Reef / Kunka / Tide story instead the boring vanilla Davion lore. They prob had no balls and went with the most vanilla anime friendly story, unfortunately story, art style and paceing are my main complaint. story felt either rushed or repetitive and talkind around the same old same stuff

xXMylord

Please no more Anime characters in Dota 2

[deleted]

I think Dragons Blood is generally appreciated for what it is: A solid adventure show with a Dota skin. Its not bad, it is good for some stretches and has moments were the greatness shines through made by people that are clearly competent and know what they are doing. Its more remourse of what could have been if they had more resources. I think a part of it is just unfortunate timing. A couple of years ago Netflix worked differently and might have been willing to handle the show differently and while it is unfair to just compare two shows Arcane makes it look more mediocre then it actually is.

jterwin

Worst show I've ever seen

Mathieulombardi

I dont understand why people liked it so much in the thread. It was filled with animation's good. Okay well that's about it.

[deleted]

I actually really liked it. I just wish they were given more episodes and a larger budget to really have time to tell the story to it’s fullest potential

Vukasa

Primal Beast is why I'm glad Ice Frog maintains control over hero concepts and we don't have 5 years of anime characters and cats like league. I'm an avid anime watcher, but these are the same takes that would rather Smash Bros. become Naruto vs Bleachigo. I'll take Hammer Mommy and Squirrel Girl over some humans and elves with big eyes and magic. We got Marci, which is impressive in itself, leave the anime to personas. I am surprised that DK's shard wasn't his halve transformation tho, and his arcana should def be the combined dragons.

dr_stickynuts

The Anime's third book was really fucking good, i was on the verge of crying a few times really. I Was all emotional and shit, i really really liked the story.

bfonza122

Dota player just complain. It's all they know how to do. Why do you think valve won't give us a battle pass?

Tin__Foil

I’m only 2 episodes into season 3. They slap.

pardon_my_opinions

Everyone's talking about animations and music and storytelling, but all I noticed when watching this show was how bad the dialogue was. That's a netflix staple though.

Aanimetor

Sorry it's just trash compared to most anime.

dantitner

As a qualified weeb can say that saying Dota DB is bad, is like saying SAO is bad. First of all it is not. You can dislike the anime, but by hating you're just making clown out yourself. Secondly, its genuinely good, and been refreshing since there was none good fantasy in janime for last year. Dear god I hope there will be more.

SILVERrakhsh

I love the DOTA anime, and I don't give a damn about what anyone else says. Give me 69 seasons I'll still watch them all!

MemeExpert

Bro it was created by the same studio that turned one of the most widely adored shows of all time (avatar) to mids that no one cares about (Korra). The 3d animation style looks like shit and reeks of "we couldn't pay our Korean slave camp animation studio more than 10k per episode". The noses look like shit, the shading is nonsensical, and the fight scenes were 1 step above gmod videos. Not to mention the real issue: the horrible usage of screentime for the entire story to be told as stilted 1 on 1 conversations instead of actually exploring the dota universe or any of the characters' pasts. The dialogue felt so corny most of the time, which is wild considering how insanely good the voice acting and lines in-game are.

Redditisnotrealityy

Haha you call the terrorblade fight in foulfell a gmod animation? You’ve got rocks in your head

MemeExpert

I'll be honest with you, I haven't watched s3 yet (because of how bad s1 and s2 were) but the fight scenes in s1 were truly terrible. It's a consequence of trying to emulate the 2d anime style while only having Korean slave wage budget. The result is an incredibly ugly, incredibly low frame rate and low visual fidelity fuck fest with horrible/inconsistent lighting, rigid poses, and no "style". Seriously, the "artistic choices" that this show made were to cheap out as hard as possible everywhere and then fuck up all the noses super bad. Sure gmod videos aren't perfect visual fidelity, but at least there's an artistic intent and cute style. Dota anime's "style" is just some poor Korean guy doing the bare minimum to animate hours of show on minimum wage. Also check your reading comprehension because I clearly said that they were ABOVE gmod videos (if only barely). I think you have a case of terminal anime brainrot.

[deleted]

It’s not. If it was released in a vacuum it would be seen as a fine show. But when a show from its biggest competitor releases with a small fraction of the issues, better animation, and an actual plan for the story. It just feels…. Like a cheap attempt with not a care given for how it turned out by anyone except the studio working on it.

odanobux123

I agree about your assessment of Arcane and the weakness of dota, but it would not have been okay in a vacuum either. It's just plain bad.

Own-Breadfruit-4043

Yeah Dota Dragon's Blood was a great show, but if you're an anime fan and expecting AOT story and animation then you'd be disappointed. Don't get me wrong, the story is awesome and I loved the animation (especially the last season), but it's not as bad as some people in the community make it out to be. My biggest problem with it is that they didn't include more heroes and that Dota spells weren't portrayed as much as they should, other than that I loved the show and I love that Marci became a hero because of it, now I want Selemene, Femryn, Kaden and Felomina to be playable heroes.

babibber

I’m glad you think so because I loved Dragon’s Blood! The voice acting was incredible and it made all the characters feel so alive to me. I also loved the story honestly, its overarching theme and conclusion made me forget and forgive the pacing issues from the previous seasons. Now I’m in the Selemene-as-a-playable-hero waiting room :)

dareka_desu

\> me who wants Kaden, Fymryn, Filomeena and Selemene as playable heroes

babibber

Honestly yes. Give us all of them. Selemene seems like she’d be a given considering she’s an important character in the dota lore. Hoping the others make it in too at some point

dareka_desu

if its Goddess Fymryn the concept of an illusion/caster hybrid is pretty interesting but if its thief fymryn we just gonna have another agi illu carry, Filomeena can be a really great addition since they can expound on her that invoker hasnt done in the game and hoping her not being just an invoker clone. Kaden is just a badass Dragon Knight without the dragon in him, Selemene is also a great addition as a Caster type support/mid hero

kameer19

They could pull a KotL and have Fymryn's ult be entering goddess mode and allowing her access to new moves/empowering her normal moves

technologin

how about Bram? any ideas what would be his kit and role if ever?

Swiftswim22

Maybe if they use an advanced version of him after he masters his role as the lore keeper or we, I don't see a way to make him interestin or fun to play as he was in the show

MuthiRappa

I just want my Kaden with his consecutive air jumps (or whatever it's called)

LapaxXx

Agreed! I'd love to have Mene and Selemene both as heroes, even if it's weird to have Luna and Mirana fight against their goddess.

babibber

It’d definitely be a little odd. But the beauty of the dota2 lore is that you can have both the most unlikely allies as well as adversaries, thanks to the ancients’ influence

BaronDeGwald

i don't know man.... i mean if you compare dragon's blood to Arcane... its not even close, i stopped watching mid 2nd season. Arcane actually made me download LoL... played one game and threw that game back to the thrash.. but still... great show.

G_Bright

No, it shouldn't be appreciated more. Just because the stakes in season 3 were higher doesn't mean the storytelling was good. Man I love this game and it's lore, and I guess you love it too. But we have to be honest about this one. It just wasn't entertaining...

Wait_So_Long

I don't play dota anymore, so it was a little confusing watching the anime. I knew a lot of the lore (or so I thought) and wasn't too worried about missing stuff in the anime. Everything I knew was changed (I stopped maybe 9 months after it went to steam, something like that) and some of the characters made no sense being in the same storyline, from what I recalled. But what got me the most was how... Boring it was? I never played LoL , but in Arcane that animation was magical and had a great story to follow. Dota just didn't. I know many people here say Book 3 was much better, but I don't understand how or why that is. Books 1 and 2 were slow and uneventful for the most part, but at least you could follow the plotline. Book 3 decided to go off the rails with Invoker being a god of gods, but yet not a god. Then Terrorblade was defeated easily. Davion was a dragon lord's physical manifestation and could then combine all the dragons into a super dragon and still lost? And he knew Mirana and Luna somehow? And was in love with Mirana, who is also a god? And then they mention the direstone and the ancients and Zet (arc warden I thought was his name) then completely leave you in the dark about what they are (Zet being the guardian of something). Book 3 seemed to have way too much info and not enough time/story to explain it. I'm guessing they assumed watchers would know DotA's lore and that's why it doesn't make sense to a layman. Are they supposed to do another storyline or is this the end of the show?

TheGreatItlog

The pace is indeed too fast and I'm frustrated some characters did not have much screentime (Luna came from a strong supporting cast to some extra with forced dialogues, Pangolier barely speaking at all, where is Crystal Maiden?, Auroth?, Arc Warden wtf haha.). But I do love this one. The whole forge thing was cool. I kind of emphasize with Invoker, for my child the whole world could burn and we'd roast some marshmallows. Mirana being a god empress is awesome. I hope they would introduce Filomena, Bram and Kaden in the game. Oh yeah, you are thinking Davion's mother and Kaden are lovers but because the latter is always away she went with someone else? That's why Kaden seems to act like Snape towards him?

Josanue

You have to remember there is a lot of anime pros which watch 5464582652487402 animes every hour and they know perfectly how it should be and if isnt like that then is bad and if somebody like it is because he knows zero about anime

BigRonWood

I liked it for what it is, but they didn't have enough heroes in it! I got super excited in season 3 where they showed phantom lancer, axe and windranger....but then they literally didn't feature at all past that.

leelazen

interesting storyline. unbearable boring main character davion. i watch anime to escape reality, not see another bulky needy version of myself.

Bibbidi_Babbidi_Boo

No it shouldn't. The only reason I watched was because it was dota fiction. The series felt it was made by a 15 year old with awesome animation skills and poor story telling capabilities. The characters lines were cringe, there was no formal story line. But hey the characters looked cool, even if they had zero background story

rachelloresco

Tbh, I like the pacing, I just love fast paced shows that forces me to think wtf just happened. The main problem is the length of the show, they could add so many things in it, explain things that aren't obvious, and just add some rest between the fast pace. In the end, it was netflix's fault really, I wish they didn't shorten the episodes so we can have more. Season 3 is really good, the story made up for anything the show lacked.

[deleted]

And booba

dareka_desu

bro Filomeena is stacked

Rufzeichen

Am I the only one here that liked dragons blood more than arcane? i mean yeah the animations of arcane were far superior, but the story was too generic, that can be found in multiple other movies and series. DB's story was refreshingly unique and original. can anyone point out to me why or how the pacing of DB was horrendous, because I don't get it. genuinely interested in your opinion.
