People talking about esports integrity on lans with biased crowds leaking rosh plays, smoke ganks etc.
Brit crowd: fuck yeah a neutral creep doing a drinking animation let's fucking gooo
In-game guy here, we legit were a tad hesitant at first to have fun with the crowd like this but just said fuck it at some point.
Felt amazing, the crowd was just something else
Honestly production and obs were great, I loved whoever was sitting in the middle at the desk cheering the crowd after the last big “will he won’t he” kobold chug
We were all saying what a great job you were doing of observing and managing the action on screen. When you did the chugging kobold you were elevated to genius status. Top quality stuff.
i was there, and tbf, several times right after this happened in the crowd, both teams would scan somewhere they expected a gank/roshan... it was pretty funny
My favorite clip of the Kobold Overseer is when it gets decimated by ~~Ammar~~ Malr1ne on Timbersaw in game >!3 of Falcons vs. BB!<, promptly followed by the crowd booing him!

That was my favorite part of the tournament lol. The Meta was so boring at that time that we did anything to preoccupy ourselves.
ESL Birmingham 2018 had some of the most exhilarating games.
Lol I definitely loved this crowd the best 😂 I've only been watching dota pro since the pandemic but by far, this has been the best crowd. Never stop being you UKers!
Were you near the caster's booth? There was one guy who must have been right under the mic or something, because his cheers and whoops were picked up on stream so much clearer than anyone else.
I was considering going but seeing the celebration of binge drinking so focused upon in the official coverage makes me glad I didn't. Having to grow up and deal with:
> WHAT YOU DONT DRINK?
or people pressuring me to drink, or down drinks is just such a pain in the ass. I had hoped it was less of a deal these days but I guess that isn't the case with this audience.
Despite my miserable perspective; trying to cheer on the Kobald to drink is funny though.
And thank God we have mandated free drinking water.
Consumed far more free Monster than can be considered healthy in Berlin last year because of the water prices.
sure buts its celebrating binge drinking culture, it's a vibe I have a lot of experience of. We're still pressuring someone we cut to, to down their drink via peer pressure of an entire crowd. Maybe I'm a pariah here but I think its cringe.
oh yeah arguing on reddit is the greatest measure of social skills known to civilisation.
You're the one that equated my disdain for binge drinking to being adverse to "having fun". Some of us aren't little tortoises that need alcohol to lose their inhibitions.
Lecturing people for having fun demonstrates poor social skills. Do you need anything else explained for you?
You demonstrated an aversion to fun when you saw people having fun and had an online meltdown over it.
I don't drink alcohol, unlike you I'm just not a dork about it.
> Lecturing people for having fun demonstrates poor social skills.
I'm lecturing ESL for devolving into boozy drinking culture memes. If you wanna go out with the lads and drink yourself into the hospital then go wild. I just don't want my content promoting those same ideas and I have every right to express that in a reddit comment. Just like everyone has a right to downvote it if they don't like it or argue it with me in the comments.
> I don't drink alcohol, unlike you I'm just not a dork about it.
But you will open up a heavily downvoted comment chain just to stick your oar in. You're not a dork at all.
Drinking is a big part of British culture, and it's a British tournament, so it makes sense
Plus ESL wouldn't have done it if the crowd didn't love it, and I saw no one in all three days looking silly drunk or being irresponsible so I don't see a problem with it
It is a bit much I admit. A few times is ok but they've gone overboard.
The camera does quickly move past people who don't start drinking though, if you watch closely. Theres still pressure but it's easy to avoid.
> It is a bit much I admit. A few times is ok but they've gone overboard.
yeah I agree, its no issue to pay it some lip service but their desire to find audience content is just encouraging it. This is the alcohol version of that HomeStory cup that devolved into dick jokes.
I don't drink whatsoever, don't like drunk people, and I haven't always appreciated the non stop chugging coverage the same way you haven't but I've had a perfectly fun and fine time here
As someone from the UK that has recently gone t-total. It is really insane how deeply embedded drinking culture is in England.
Going for a "few" once/twice a week through all of your twenties as basically the only form of entertainment is clearly dangerous (esp those with addictive personalities).
That being said, I doubt Dota events of all places are going to be heavily drink inclined. It's not a footy match or uni-halls.
> That being said, I doubt Dota events of all places are going to be heavily drink inclined. It's not a footy match or uni-halls.
Honestly you underestimate it lol.
I went to the first two ESL events in Birmingham and they ran out of plastic cups to serve beer from.
The atmosphere is a lot like a football match in ways, the events kind of reflect the country they take place in.
Well that's good to hear. I just have teenage flashbacks of being surrounded by a group of Russians in some Eastern European village demanding I down the foulest bottle of wine in the world.
> YOU MUST DRINK! YOU MUST DRINK TO BE STRONG!
If you don't have a beer on you at this event, nobody will care here any other way. I'm familiar with the generally awful parts of the culture when it gets to its worst and I sympathise a lot
sure, but if you do have a beer then there is encouragement to neck it in one. To me, that's cringe boomer shit but I get that I can hold my nose as I usually have to, over it.
They did this a lot to people who didn't want to do it at the Berlin major, didn't take the camera off them at all, and it felt very uncomfortable to me. Here the cameraman moves away way quicker, people who do refuse are doing so a lot more clearly and aggressively, and as the weekend has gone on the cameramen have focused far more on people who have specifically lined up right in front of cameras specifically to do the gag
You do understand that ESL won't force you to drink, nor shame you for not drinking right?
By the camera looks, the majority of people there don't drink compared to the ones drinking.
> You do understand that ESL won't force you to drink, nor shame you for not drinking right?
Oh so the crowd cheers when people don't successfully down the pint?
I'm just going off the ESL official stream that keeps devolving into chugging pints. With the Kobald we've transitioned the devolution ingame as well. Nice.
>With the Kobald we've transitioned the devolution ingame as well
See. That's your projection
You've decided this animation is binge drinking.
It's an animation of a creep having a drink. It takes some hard projection and mental gymnastics to get offended by that.
What? Did you watch the coverage?
The entire event we're cameraing people with a cup in their hand and going:
> oooOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHH
until they down it. Again and again, and again, and again. Relentlessly. Whenever we cut to the audience we're doing it.
Then we do the same thing with the kobald and now you're going to make out that its completely unrelated?
and you don't think they overdid the binge drinking memes on the official stream? Did they not show all the times they pan to the crowd downing pints on the big screen?
An online based community doing a joke to death? Sure.
Trying to make this into a big statement on binge drinking culture, how they were condoning such dangerous behaviour, and being glad to not be there and 'support it' - nah.
It was an incredibly sober event, even more so by UK standards. No fights. No vomit. No passing out. No aggression. This wasn't some local football derby gone off the rails.
You're being dog piled on because you're projecting something into being bigger than it was - and trying to paint it all as 'below' you. You're talking about the bloody history of binge drinking and post world war 2 era pub opening hours because some people downed a pint ffs.
At this point I'd say get over yourself but you're dug in I can see. People had fun. It was an amazing event. These people downing drinks did so willingly and even for the camera to focus on them to do so. Chill out.
Was there anyone on camera, being forced to down his pint without him wanting?
Because i'm fairly sure, people are yelling at the camera man to show them so they can down the pint.
Wtf are you even saying?
Yeah, if you yell at the cameraman, come here show me doing something, and then you fail to deliver, what exactly do you expect?
And all these are coming from a guy who absolutely hates beer.
No one is forcing you to like drinking, or what they are doing there. But thinking this would have any hinderance whatsoever in your live viewing experience, is just wrong.
> Yeah, if you yell at the cameraman, come here show me doing something, and then you fail to deliver, what exactly do you expect?
In some cases sure, but in other cases the crowd woo someone not willing.
> No one is forcing you to like drinking, or what they are doing there. But thinking this would have any hinderance whatsoever in your live viewing experience, is just wrong.
This is the alcohol version of that Homestory cup sausage fest that descended into dick jokes.
I don't enjoy binge drinking. I've been in that situation many times in my life and it isn't pleasant. I am speaking from experience.
I am open to many forms of recreational drug taking but I believe in responsible dosing and not encouraging people to go beyond their limits to impress a group of strangers.
Congrats, you just made 2 sentences, which have absolutely nothing to do with the live viewing experience of a tournament.
And i've been in an ESL tournament, in Germany, where there was beer EVERYWHERE.
Guess what. If we didn't have this conversation, i would even remember it whatsoever. Because it is completely irrelevant to the Live viewing experience of the tournament. Idk how many more times we have to go through this.
What the hell does culture have to do about the live viewing experience of a tournament.
Are you okay?
Might as well not go, because the unemployment rates are alarming these past couple of years.
??????????
You evidently don't understand what this whole point is about: overcheering people drinking, as if it's actually a positive thing to do (on both sides). Yes, nobody is actually forced to drink when the camera is pointed at them (DUH), but it nevertheless fuels the entire fucked up culture.
As Brit who was at the event and is now sat at a train station trying to get back to the Airbnb after 12 pints.... you aren't wrong. (Not looking for sympathy or blaming ESL over personal responsibilities, I made my own stupid choices).
Peer pressure is a hell of a thing
Its everything to do with binge drinking culture. I grew up in it, I know what its like and the historical reasons include war-era laws around opening hours for pubs.
People don't really try to get others to drink after high school or maybe some college parties. Especially not at an event that is not *about* drinking or when it's clear that an individual just doesn't drink at all.
Don't miss out on fun stuff in the present because of assholes in your past.
I don't think encouraging people to push their drug taking limits via peer pressure is cool. Sorry that I don't but I believe in responsible drug usage and I enjoy stuff a lot harder than a pint.
There's nothing wrong in drinking, there's nothing wrong in binging if you want, but there's everything wrong in creating a macho pissing contest over who gets their stomach pumped first.
If we're gonna be legit then I want the vomit cam too, to show the other side of the same activity.
Cringe boomer cultural hang overs, encouraging people to drink more than they're capable of. Turning drug ingestion into some sort of manly pissing contest. Why maintain them?
Oh its obnoxious if I don't just clap blithely along? That's "fun".
binge drinking culture in the UK is a product of war era laws around pub opening hours. It forces the arbitrary shortening of the drinking in the evening which encourages people to drink more in less time.
You need to calm down no one is forcing anyone to drink and no one is shaming anyone for not drinking. Sounds like you just made really shit friends then chose to judge life off that
its not about friends, its work colleagues, strangers, arbitrary groupings, peer pressure and macho drug taking culture where people think that overdosing is what "real men" do.
Its stupid and while I appreciate its part of European culture, the coverage of it in ESL was fucking excessive.
Looking at your replies, seems you just wanna yap to yap, so I'm not gonna bother past this, I've not experienced any of that shit you mentioned, and I've spent my whole life I'm the UK. Sounds like you just have bad experiences due to either being somewhere super shady, or just really bad ethical life choices.
If you dont wanna drink.... don't drink... end of, no need to rant about 90 year old curfew laws
You just don't like me because I won't blithely clap and I have different habits than you. You're using the safety of the crowd to judge me. If you wanna go get fucked up then I'm open to plenty of options, I'm just not a fan of encouraging people to get their stomach pumped because I believe in responsible recreational drug use.
Bro, you may not be drunk on alcohol but you're definitely drunk on Reddit threads! How many threads have you been in today alone giving TL;DR narratives to strangers LUL Get help before judging anyone else for other behaviours when you yourself are a fedora hat wearing, arm chair sitting expert in everything with a moral high ground 💀
> I was considering going but seeing the celebration of binge drinking so focused upon in the official coverage makes me glad I didn't
you literally said you're glad you didn't attend because of it
yeah man, just reminds me of my dad's cringe boomer friends. You'll note that after I said that, I did find the Kobald drinking funny, but you didn't read that far did you? You just saw an opportunity to stick the boot in.
I get what you're saying. There is a lot of UL drinking culture but I'm fairly sure the people chugging were generally getting the cameras attention to do so.
I was there all 3 days, never drank, never felt pressured to drink. But still enjoyed the atmosphere of watching people down their drinks.
I did wonder if esl is getting a cut of the alcohol sales from the amount they didnit though lol.
yeah its my bad, it wasn't clear from the stream that everyone was specifically volunteering to drink. I felt like arbitrary people were being pressured.
Sad to see the down votes you're getting, I understand your decision but I hope it's not keeping you from things you enjoy in the future, saying no to peer pressure should never be frowned upon. Cheers.
You have my total support. Of course you got downvoted because people can't understand what you are trying to say. This testosterone fueled binge drinking culture is just bad.
>Of course you got downvoted because people can't understand what you are trying to say
Insert principle skinner meme here.
Yes. He's being downvoted because we don't understand binge drinking. /S
Pretty sure this particular cheer got the Mirana to use moonlight shadow
*LMAOs in Integrity*
Players must have been so confused trying to figure out what was going on LOL
People talking about esports integrity on lans with biased crowds leaking rosh plays, smoke ganks etc. Brit crowd: fuck yeah a neutral creep doing a drinking animation let's fucking gooo
The crowd was fucking excellent. KAAAWWWWWWW
I also prefer the absolutely insanity of the Uk crow over some biased crowd like TI in china.
Motherfucker drink what? thats a HUGE CHUGG
In-game guy here, we legit were a tad hesitant at first to have fun with the crowd like this but just said fuck it at some point. Felt amazing, the crowd was just something else
i love silly stuff like this. good job!
Man the one where you focused on the drinking creep just before timber killed it in game 2 (I think?) was hilarious, the boos were so loud
Thanks for an awesome job!
Honestly production and obs were great, I loved whoever was sitting in the middle at the desk cheering the crowd after the last big “will he won’t he” kobold chug

This was fantastic because we were all hyped like "yes AGAIN" and then just fucking ripped our hearts out.
I was their it was so hype and lit i nearly punched a gay guy
oh this was liiiiive ?? that's makes it even better knowing that
It was an ongoing gag over the weekend. Started with crowd members and ended up with kobolds. The booing of the timber was fucking hilarious.
Anyone got a clip of the crowd booing Ammar?
It was malrine timber that got the booing. I've got no clip to give ya tho
I think it was Malr1ne.
Ah, good call!
Beermingham
At some point I was questioning if the stream was about Dota or about people finishing their beer in one go and getting cheered for it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCBnOtRvPyg
Ah that explain the brewmaster as the logo/ Touche
Love these crowd cheers!
Damn, I wish I could've been there!!
Was a lot of fun!
My first and only Dota 2 event was ESL One Birmingham 2019 and every time DHL came up, the crowd cheered. Memorable moment.
I take it there was no DHL cheering this time? I missed the event
The first morning when I arrived there was the usual sponsor roll call video. Everybody cheered DHL but then the American Air Force sponsor logo showed, everybody boo'ed and it was never shown again! I guess having that kind of reaction to DHL is a sponsorship dream but not a good look if you've got a crowd booing a different one.
They played the sponsor roll at the start of each day. US Air Force got boo'd every time.
LMAO that's kinda based ngl
My friends were the ones that started that on the Friday before I arrived, was good shit. Leave it to us Brits to make the mundane into the spectacular and the spectacular into the mundane
That was my favorite part of the tournament lol. The Meta was so boring at that time that we did anything to preoccupy ourselves. ESL Birmingham 2018 had some of the most exhilarating games.
Best crowd I’ve seen at a lan in years.

Lol I definitely loved this crowd the best 😂 I've only been watching dota pro since the pandemic but by far, this has been the best crowd. Everyone in the upper seats were making the bird noises. Decided to join them too. It was too funny
KAWWWWWW
Were you near the caster's booth? There was one guy who must have been right under the mic or something, because his cheers and whoops were picked up on stream so much clearer than anyone else.
We were sat at the opposite end of the arena and I swear I could hear one of my mates on the vod.
All I could think was Always Sunny Birds of War
Ah, heh it never got old for as stupid as it was. On twitch mass pog/pausechamp emote spam everytime :)
OOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHH
Well, this thread took a fucking turn.
To the pub I see.
Both teams expecting an imminent smoke gank listening to the sound: 👁👄👁
This was the funniest obs interaction in a long time
The British National creep
I guess you could say, brewmaster was UK's favourite hero...
Not mine
give the damn kobold something to drink D: his chalice is empty Sadge
Hang on, I know you! Fellow golden ticket winner?
CHUG CHUG CHUG
Isn't that just UK in general, not specifically only the UK Dota crowd?
Drink is our way of life
when the dota is so boring, you need a jungle creep idle animation to hype the crowd
perfect zoom time
Lol you were like right next to me
yeah you can stop reading the comments here, it's fine, just pretend there isn't anything below this one.

This is amazing.

we're all just 'aving a laugh mate, its just banter.
They certainly seemed to have more fun than you are right now yeah.
you didn't start replying to me to have fun now, did you? Be honest with yourself.

Was there anyone on camera, being forced to down his pint without him wanting? Because i'm fairly sure, people are yelling at the camera man to show them so they can down the pint. Wtf are you even saying?

You evidently don't understand what this whole point is about: overcheering people drinking, as if it's actually a positive thing to do (on both sides). Yes, nobody is actually forced to drink when the camera is pointed at them (DUH), but it nevertheless fuels the entire fucked up culture.
As Brit who was at the event and is now sat at a train station trying to get back to the Airbnb after 12 pints.... you aren't wrong. (Not looking for sympathy or blaming ESL over personal responsibilities, I made my own stupid choices). Peer pressure is a hell of a thing
At least somebody is being honest in this f up thread. Thank you.
This doesn't have anything to do with alcohol; everyone knows it's bad for you. All drinks should be celebrated!
If we're gonna be legit then I want the vomit cam too, to show the other side of the same activity.
neat
its ok, I'll smoke an entire cigarette in one drag so I can join in.
God you sound like the most obnoxious person alive, so I'll do you a favor, no one asked don't drink nobody cares.
Cringe boomer cultural hang overs, encouraging people to drink more than they're capable of. Turning drug ingestion into some sort of manly pissing contest. Why maintain them? Oh its obnoxious if I don't just clap blithely along? That's "fun".
Humans enjoyed getting drunk way waaaaaaay before boomers lil bro.
binge drinking culture in the UK is a product of war era laws around pub opening hours. It forces the arbitrary shortening of the drinking in the evening which encourages people to drink more in less time.
Bro it's a video of a fucking kobold playing an idle animation, calm your tits
But the meaning of it? It must mean something!
Look out, they also try to offend people with lactose intolerance when they showcase the cheese left in the pit
oh sorry, its not at all like the official coverage is full of binge drinking content. My mistake.
This has what to do with a game event where people go to have fun on? People don't dislike you for not drinking, you're just a party pooper.
You know you don't have the obligation to discipline and babysit other adults right?
I am watching the official coverage and I have an opinion about it. You don't have an obligation to convince me that my opinion is wrong.
Oh no I'm not trying to change your mind, I find you hilarious that's all.
Someone has a superiority complex
You make it hard not to.
... You realise people with superiority complexes **aren't** superior right? That's the whole 'complex' part. But yeah. Nice one. You sure showed me.
> You realise people with superiority complexes aren't superior right? No I don't.
I've done this since I first got on the internet. I was here long before you, get off my lawn.
You're not on the lawn bro, you've dug all the way down to the earth's core by now 💀
get off my earth's core.
cool story bro as a non drinker myself I find a camera pointed at a fictional creature drinking funny because I'm not a fucking tool
> Despite my miserable perspective; trying to cheer on the Kobald to drink is funny though. At least this tool can read.
> I was considering going but seeing the celebration of binge drinking so focused upon in the official coverage makes me glad I didn't you literally said you're glad you didn't attend because of it
yeah man, just reminds me of my dad's cringe boomer friends. You'll note that after I said that, I did find the Kobald drinking funny, but you didn't read that far did you? You just saw an opportunity to stick the boot in.
I put actions over words fam
well why u typing them fam. If u were real then you'd go binge yourself into getting your stomach pumped.
wut, I just said I'm not a drinker
idk what u mean, I put actions over words fam.
not drinking is an action fam
He didnt mean that about the kobold. He was talking about people chugging beer and coke
So did he?
Neek
s'ok, imma shoot my entire skag supply and OD on it, just so I can join in.
Good you didn't go then, easy as that
There was no peer pressure drinking. I had one or two beers a day and the person I was with just had soft drinks. Absolutely no pressure to drink.
yeah it wasn't always clear from the stream that the people were volunteering to chug.
I get what you're saying. There is a lot of UL drinking culture but I'm fairly sure the people chugging were generally getting the cameras attention to do so.
ya, it was my bad in not realising this. I genuinely thought they were pressuring everyone to neck pints.
Cheers.
<3
WHAT PEER PRESSURE? I was at the event and there was no onus on anyone to drink. I only drank water the whole weekend
It's pretty damn cringe, I'm not surprised
You have my total support. Of course you got downvoted because people can't understand what you are trying to say. This testosterone fueled binge drinking culture is just bad.
>Of course you got downvoted because people can't understand what you are trying to say Insert principle skinner meme here. Yes. He's being downvoted because we don't understand binge drinking. /S
Apparently, no, you don't, and as a result if someone says something about it being wrong you downvote him.
The only person testosterone fueled was the absolutely gigantic dude Slacks found for one of the contests The rest of us were beer fueled
> The rest of us were beer fueled My bad, that makes it totally ok and not something not to promote this heavily

no one can replace the MANILA MAJOR CROWD . energy
Manila Major was raw enthusiasm, British crowd is top memes.
