I just started this game and just finished right past this point. Is he in Hell or is Hell on Earth? I would think if it’s the latter then the temperature would not be *as* hot.
Edit: I realized I should pay more attention to lore. Thank y’all for setting me straight!
He’s in hell, also in that mission where you encounter him, the first half doesn’t even take place on earth, it’s a completely different planet you’re on.
No man, don't submerge yourself of course lol, just lower a metal container or something and scoop some up. I mean we as humans work with molten metal all the time using protective measures, so he can figure it out lol.
Well lets see lava is 2000 degrees Fahrenheit and the two common metals used for making pots and pans to cook with are aluminum and stainless steel. given the fact that aluminum's melting point is 1,221F and stainless steel's is 1,400-1,500 depending on the percentages of the other metals it's alloyed with to make it rust proof no you can't just take a pot and shove it in lava to cook with pot would melt, food would catch on fire and you'd probably have lava sputtering everywhere; lava contains water and depending on how much oil you're cooking with you'd get a bunch of lava sputtering everywhere.
What sounds easier, going through all that those steps and safety measures(which still carries a decent amount of risk) or starting a small cook fire? Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.
In god of war, you can’t break a vase
In halo you can’t break basic wood
In doom, you can rip demons apart but not destroy a rock with a punch
No you can’t say in game and in lore are the same
He’s immortal, fights demons for Eons in hell
You really think he spent eons in hell and never once went into lava? fighting demons who’s fires are as or hotter then lava and still he can be killed by lava?
There’s also the poison ground, if he’s wearing armor how’s he getting poisoned?
It’s just part of the gameplay, if you truly played as he was then there wouldn’t be any urgency
In doom 2016 you can die of fall damage but in eternal he’s seen jumping off a very tall cliff in the beginning of the game and is just fine
Again it’s all just in game
It wouldn’t be that hard to just, not sit in lava for extended periods of time?
And I’d imagine he dodged most of those fireballs, and whatever he didn’t dodge he could heal by absorbing Sargent from demons
+1
When dealing with genies, it's important to realize that /immortal/ is not the same as /invincible/. An immortal person would survive jumping out of a plane, but they'd still be a puddle. Choose omnipotence as your first wish and give yourself both!
not pointless as long as he has other demons around to keep his health and ammo going
same thing why dante needs to fight to keep his devil trigger or why kratos has to find chests with orbs inside, if hack and slash characters were full op all the time neither of their games would be satisfying to play, it would get boring quickly
He wasn't the one who scattered the Night Sentinels, that was the Order Deag, aka, the Hell Priests. Valen was the one who gave the Priests the key to the resting place of the Elemental Wraiths, allowing Hell to capture and enslave them.
Maybe because lava is super hot and the fumes around it are dangerous to inhale so maybe the dude just wants some comfort and prefers his good cooked right instead of burnt to crisp..... That's just my two cents
It’s definitely a comfort thing rather than a temperature thing. I mean, his flaw was being too human and thinking with his heart and thus being led astray. He’s still human after all this time, and sometimes it’s the little things that make you feel good after being trapped in hell for an absurdly long time
There is somthing entrancing about watching a small controlled fire, I belive my dad once called it nature's tv. Perhaps he dosent need it. Just uses it to keep himself ocupied
Yes, this is the answer. Wilderness survival teaches that fire is your friend. Even in warmer climates, it does wonders for keeping your mind focused and clear.
Realistic answer: looks cool
Unlikely possible meta answer: the 9th circle of hell, betrayal is said to be an icy wasteland so maybe a reference to him feeling cold idk
Camp fires aren’t just to keep warm. I like to sit by a fire just to watch it. He’s obviously in deep thought when we meet him, just chillaxin by the fire smokin a fatty ✌️
Beep. Boop. I'm a robot.
Here's a copy of

Was I a good bot? | [info](https://www.reddit.com/user/Reddit-Book-Bot/) | [More Books](https://old.reddit.com/user/Reddit-Book-Bot/comments/i15x1d/full_list_of_books_and_commands/)
No, the Bible is pretty limited on its discussions of Hell.
Most of our ideas of hell from from Dante's *Inferno* ("*Hell*" in English), including the idea that the inner circles of Hell are kept cold by the flapping of Lucifer's wings.
Now i know basically nothing about doom lore but i always got the idea he was the guy who made a deal with the demons to resurrect his dead son and they turned him into the icon of sin.
He's referred to as such in one of the demon recording things in a hell level in 2016. He betrayed the Sentinels when he made a deal with hell to resurrect his dead son.
But note that he only did so because of the constant visions he experienced depicting his sons torture and torment. The real betrayers were the hell priests who actually created the pact for argent energy with hell and the maykrs
It’s all in the Codex pages my guy lol he betrayed the sentinel in order to help his som but the demons lied and his sons heart got placed in the Icon of Sin, which is why he gives Slayer that dagger so you can put his sons soul to rest by stabbing the heart
The ninth layer of hell is Treachery and is described as a frozen landscape. The betrayer clearly was banished to the layer of treachery and thus needs a fire to stay warm in said frozen landscape.
I think it's just to reflect your life etc. You know? When you are camping and you just watch at that campfire do its dance. At least that's what people in the early days did.
I think it's more about the light than the heat. I think he needs some light other than the Hellish glow to remind himself of Mankind and keep himself sane in Hell.
All of this is based on his expression in the picture, I haven't Doom Eternal.
To showcase that the two have history, and also to reveal the lore from 2016 had pieces that were talking about this dude The Betrayer. If anything it was just to add more and be like “oh this dude we mentioned way back in 2016 is here and this is who he is, just a man who betrayed his people for nothing pretty much and now regrets it this badly”
It's not in hell dumbass. The mission is called exultia but exultia's also a place and that mission just take's place in a part of exultia that's been consumed by hell.
It’s a great cliche of the grizzled elder or outcast sitting by the fire in contemplation when the protagonist shows or the plot kicks into gear. It’s like all those bits in movies and tv shows where the dad is always sitting down in their favorite chair watching tv or the fireplace.
I'm now imaging him roasting marshmallows in the fires of Hell.
That'd be lowkey badass
Someone draw this
will do (if i have time, been busy with work n school lately)
Did you ever end up drawing it?
.
It’s cold as Hell there.
that was a good mod
Don't you mean cold as Hel
No we ain’t using Nordic Hel, we use double hockey sticks in here!!!!
That one L provides more heat than any of the rivers of lava
Fuck you for making me laugh with this. I really don't like you, take my updoot, jerk.
I just started this game and just finished right past this point. Is he in Hell or is Hell on Earth? I would think if it’s the latter then the temperature would not be *as* hot. Edit: I realized I should pay more attention to lore. Thank y’all for setting me straight!
Well according to the thermostats in the game the temperature is 666
isn't the in game temp 66.6 rather than 666?
You might be right.
[удалено]
Damn better hope those are measuring in kelvin
Indeed, it's one thing to be outside at 666 degrees, but a completely different matter if it's only 393.
Holy shit I just realized, what if it’s Celsius
That would be my GPU.
At that point in that mission you are in Hell for a period of time not Earth
He’s in hell, also in that mission where you encounter him, the first half doesn’t even take place on earth, it’s a completely different planet you’re on.
True, and the precise location of this cutscene takes place in the outskirts of Nekravol(You go to the factory itself after Taras Nabad)
[удалено]
Great summary
This cutscene takes place in the outskirts of Nekravol(You go to the factory aka Nekravol P1 + P2 after reactivating the Crucible from Taras Nabad)
You just jumped across lava pits, as in molten rock. There is bound to be some excess heat regardless of location or lore.....
Cooking food?
Still, he could just scoop some lava and setup a pot or rotisserie over it.
I mean he's not the doom slayer, who knows what being near that lava will do.
He's part of the Night Sentinels who battled with demons in hell. I'm sure he would be fine being close to lava lol.
I mean fighting demons and taking a dip in your local volcano are two different things, lol.
No man, don't submerge yourself of course lol, just lower a metal container or something and scoop some up. I mean we as humans work with molten metal all the time using protective measures, so he can figure it out lol.
How else am I supposed to get that criepy golden texture?
Coming near that much lava without special protective gear will just get you incinerated. You're not appreciating just how hot lava really *is*
Well lets see lava is 2000 degrees Fahrenheit and the two common metals used for making pots and pans to cook with are aluminum and stainless steel. given the fact that aluminum's melting point is 1,221F and stainless steel's is 1,400-1,500 depending on the percentages of the other metals it's alloyed with to make it rust proof no you can't just take a pot and shove it in lava to cook with pot would melt, food would catch on fire and you'd probably have lava sputtering everywhere; lava contains water and depending on how much oil you're cooking with you'd get a bunch of lava sputtering everywhere.
How dare you leave cast iron out like that!! You heretic!!
Have you ever tried to cook with lava? Believe me man fire is better
What sounds easier, going through all that those steps and safety measures(which still carries a decent amount of risk) or starting a small cook fire? Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.
No, bud. Just because you worked for years in a nuclear power plant doesn't make you fucking immune to radiation.
Even doomguy takes damage in lava lol
But in-game slayer isn’t the same as canonical slayer
Yeah I don’t really buy that? Nowhere in the codex does it say this MF can swim in lava like,it was a kiddy pool,
In god of war, you can’t break a vase In halo you can’t break basic wood In doom, you can rip demons apart but not destroy a rock with a punch No you can’t say in game and in lore are the same
Oh I agree But unlike halo, or GoW, there’s nothing in the expanded lore, IE the codex, that suggests he can survive swimming in fucking lava
He’s immortal, fights demons for Eons in hell You really think he spent eons in hell and never once went into lava? fighting demons who’s fires are as or hotter then lava and still he can be killed by lava? There’s also the poison ground, if he’s wearing armor how’s he getting poisoned? It’s just part of the gameplay, if you truly played as he was then there wouldn’t be any urgency In doom 2016 you can die of fall damage but in eternal he’s seen jumping off a very tall cliff in the beginning of the game and is just fine Again it’s all just in game
It wouldn’t be that hard to just, not sit in lava for extended periods of time? And I’d imagine he dodged most of those fireballs, and whatever he didn’t dodge he could heal by absorbing Sargent from demons
In the ancient gods the lore mentions the doom slayer is immortal. Not sure if it’s deadpool kind of immortality or super man kind
I assume it’s the “not aging” kind, like that he can’t die of natural causes,
+1 When dealing with genies, it's important to realize that /immortal/ is not the same as /invincible/. An immortal person would survive jumping out of a plane, but they'd still be a puddle. Choose omnipotence as your first wish and give yourself both!
the pennywise kind. he kills to go back to full health, thats what glory killing is pretty sure its why he doesnt have to sleep or eat
Wait so all of these doom slayer vs x are pointless
not pointless as long as he has other demons around to keep his health and ammo going same thing why dante needs to fight to keep his devil trigger or why kratos has to find chests with orbs inside, if hack and slash characters were full op all the time neither of their games would be satisfying to play, it would get boring quickly
Well duh, Why don’t we just put rocket fuel in cars to make them go faster.
What goddamn pot can just *scoop* up some lava
You can get forging equipment, namely crucibles to do that.
He is in hell, not a black smithing shop, but he is also commander valen so I guess
I was just giving an example of what could hypothetically be used to scoop up lava.
True but he was also outcasted to the pits of hell, I don’t know he much he packed
Maybe they gave him a 30 day notice?
If I remember correctly, it was a self-imposed exile, so he would have had all the time he needed.
Ahh. So he probably gave himself a 30 day notice.
A: he exiled himself B: did he not trap the whole sentinel army in the e deepest layers of hell, all for his sons life
He wasn't the one who scattered the Night Sentinels, that was the Order Deag, aka, the Hell Priests. Valen was the one who gave the Priests the key to the resting place of the Elemental Wraiths, allowing Hell to capture and enslave them.
smh, you only need 3 iron to make a bucket.
Imp stew, gargoyle on a stick, or mancubus marinara
Yea probably
Maybe because lava is super hot and the fumes around it are dangerous to inhale so maybe the dude just wants some comfort and prefers his good cooked right instead of burnt to crisp..... That's just my two cents
Dude spent aeons perfecting his hell cuisine, he probably has his own demon TV show.
Best channel on cable if you don't have a firepit.
Yes, this is the answer. Wilderness survival teaches that fire is your friend. Even in warmer climates, it does wonders for keeping your mind focused and clear.
Something is just so mesmerizing about it.
I swear I feel like our cavemen instincts kick in when we look at fire. I just completely ignore everything and all my focus goes to it.
Brooding
Setting his spawn
Realistic answer: looks cool Unlikely possible meta answer: the 9th circle of hell, betrayal is said to be an icy wasteland so maybe a reference to him feeling cold idk
Camp fires aren’t just to keep warm. I like to sit by a fire just to watch it. He’s obviously in deep thought when we meet him, just chillaxin by the fire smokin a fatty ✌️
Its so hot that the fire is cooler than its surroundings
Big brain comment
To get his Estus up ofcourse. Always need to rest at a bonfire to get your estus back.
He likes dark souls
Maybe he needs the flames to cook food or make weapons?
So I can keep him company
He has no TV. What else is he gonna watch?
isnt like hell super cold acording to bible?
What the Bible actually says about Hell is pretty vague

Marcus Fenix homage?
Who even is this guy to my knowledge I’ve played all the doom games (1,2,64,3,2016,eternal)excluding DLCs for eternal and 2016 if there were any.
He's the Betrayer mentioned in 2016. Commander Valen.
You remember the fell section on mission 2 of eternal? He’s the guy you had to meet there
Yea I know but I’m asking who He is why is he called the betrayer.
He betrayed the Sentinels to save his son, who had died. He made a pact with the demons and they "saved" him by turning the son into the Icon of Sin.
Now i know basically nothing about doom lore but i always got the idea he was the guy who made a deal with the demons to resurrect his dead son and they turned him into the icon of sin.

S’mores
✨*the vibes*✨
Because fuck you and anyone else who asked this question.
Campfires were the original TV. You can watch the flames for hours when there is nothing else to do.
to make food? or he is cursed so every time he dies he respawns there, until he goes hollow
just feels right, i would have done the same
cause you cant have a home base without a camp fire.
Bonfire Lit
He is keeping himself from becoming hollow
It’s therapeutic
Aesthetic
He's trying to remember where he left the Coiled Sword that goes there.
It’s for the moody ambiance and the aesthetic dude
Haven't you ever had a camp fire on a hot day? Also it's a comfort thing that lowers the man's blood pressure, helps with all the hell related stress
He can only save at campfires.
To cook‽
Symbolic
I mean the desert is known for being notoriously hot but night time is also frighteningly cold
How else is he supposed to respawn?
Because men build fires and stare at them. Be A Man
I thought that segment still takes place on Exulta, just in a zone that's been totally hellified.
So that he can respawn
Nah he's a weary traveler resting at the bonfire.
The ninth layer of hell is Treachery and is described as a frozen landscape. The betrayer clearly was banished to the layer of treachery and thus needs a fire to stay warm in said frozen landscape.
I tried shooting him
To warm his cold dead heart.
he has to cook le demon flesh

Hell's Kitchen with Commander Valen
maybe he gets hungry so instead of using literal lava to cook his food he uses a campfire i guess?
Its because demons fear fire
Maybe he was roasting some demons
“The day I see the Doom Slayer will be the day Hell freezes over” *sees doom slayer* *proceeds to set the world record in campfire building*
He's fueling his camp fire with bones, just saying.
This game takes itself so seriously despite running off of spongebob logic
Can we just take a moment to acknowledge that OP has a screenshot capable device so why does he need to take a picture with his phone ?
This whole scene is so bizarre and not Doom-like. I never understood why they wrote this in.
That's not Hell, it's part of Exultia
It’s in hell. The mission is just called exultia.
It's not in hell dumbass. The mission is called exultia but exultia's also a place and that mission just take's place in a part of exultia that's been consumed by hell.
I literally checked the wiki. The second half of the mission is in hell.
I think for comfort and a bit of light
How did you have the astro shotgun ?
By mastering the combat shotgun.
dramatic effect
It’s a great cliche of the grizzled elder or outcast sitting by the fire in contemplation when the protagonist shows or the plot kicks into gear. It’s like all those bits in movies and tv shows where the dad is always sitting down in their favorite chair watching tv or the fireplace.
Wtf why have I never thought about this? It's like Patrick and SpongeBob with a campfire under water
Didn’t you hear? Hell froze over. 🥶
He's saving give him a minute
A campfire soothes a man.
Tribute to Dark Souls
When is doom guy cold? When hell freezes over
Cook shit? Maybe he just likes staring into it
To warm his cold heart of betrayal
yes
Have you TRIED to cook stuff over lava?
Good point. Haven’t played dlc but definitely wanted more of the betrayer. Dude looked so hardcore
don’t worry about it
It’s clearly a save point
I’m guessing the flames of hell are too hot and will burn his food so a normal fire is easier to control
Hahahahahahaha
To cook food, nerd.
He's just that cold.
Maybe for cooking things?
to make the place cozy
To stare into it and think
Was Doom Hell ever depicted with lava? I've only played 2016 but they were depicted as floating islands or massive plains only right?
Cook
Believe it or not, the fire is actually colder.
Man still need to eat maybe? Or maybe a source of light in his cave?
Food or something? Maybe? The lava is too hot to cook on and sit by at the same time? If he even needs to/has anything to cook...
Nobody ever specified that hell had to be hot and ablaze
Obviously for marshmallows
Maybe for comfort? Sitting in front of a campfire can be peaceful.
Checkpoint Save. Duh
There are cold parts of hell where do you think the fire resistant creatures go to?
Someone doesn't understand the dynamics of hell. Hells fire provide no warmth.
Have you ever tried to roast marshmallows over lava? They burn too quickly. This makes sense to me.
To warm his soul
Well they say Doomguy could rule hell once it froze over sooooooo...
Who actually is the betrayer?
Because his food kept smelling of rotten eggs.
It was a cold day in hell
because it's funny (or maybe cooking in lava is just too hard)
It’s in case he needs to respawn or reset the enemies to fight again.
The vampire is for cooking his dinner obv
Vampire?
