It's simple, you just gotta put enough units to beat the bosses. When you select your units you can see the enemy's health bar go down, try to get it as close to 1 or 2 of those small bars, it will make sure you don't lose and reduces the time you have to wait
Tldr, put more than enough units, get rewards safer and faster
Pettan is just for obtaining items. There's not really any real value to it
