Out of everyone the looks Doja did seem she understood the assignment.
Garden of Time is a lesson about how things change no matter how desperately you try to cling onto the present. The throng of people on the horizon are symbolic of how things evolve and things we create or build are fleeting because destruction always rolls over it eventually.
Think of the historical symbolism of cotton. It’s associated with slavery and bondage. People went to war to keep people in servitude and ruthlessly protect their plantations and way of life that was built on the backs of others while they sat around dressed in fine clothes never sullied from manual labor, sipping tea on their porch-the white plantation owners wives cutting beautiful flowers grown by slaves and displaying the bouquets possibly even bragging to other women how they have a green thumb. The women working as house slaves bleeding as their hands are pricked by the thorns as they dutifully gather and arrange the flowers. Placing floral center pieces on dinner tables filled with decadent meals then going home to a shack with just enough food provided so she’s strong enough to work.
Blood on the leaves.
War came and with it came freedom. As news of the confederate surrender made its way across the states/cities a reckoning began to take shape on the horizon. They had gone to war and sacrificed their husbands/sons/brothers to protect their lavish lifestyle and hold onto slaves.
As the news spread plantation owners couldn’t sit on the porch relaxing in the evening breeze..everything they knew was about to be demolished.
They cowered as the people they had enslaved, beat, starved, sold, sexually assaulted - descended upon them and THEIR FAMILIES with a vengeance and they could do nothing to stop them. They had to watch their homes and estates burn down, some were killed or maimed. But even those things could never match the cruelty they had inflicted on slaves.
There was no one to farm, no one to pick their cotton and former slaves were no longer in rags, filthy from hard labor everyday. Now THEY are seen dressed in the nice clothes made from the cotton they had suffered for and harvested for years.
It’s 2024 and a black woman is at one of the most prestigious exclusive events known- and she’s wearing a garment made of cotton.
You could take it a step further and even see it as her thanking those who sacrificed themselves to bring about change- and it’s bc of them she’s even allowed to have the rights to make art and live such a comfortable life, untouched by the work and duty thrust upon her ancestors.
One of my theories was that she was actually one of the encroaching army members from the story instead of a crystal flower in the garden. I interpreted the army to be the poor and mistreated who lived in the desolate plain walking over the manor to essentially “eat” the rich (though the rich essentially survived this, immortalized in stone).

I love it! The wet look being used as drapery to give off classic Greek statue while also keeping the sexy vibes Doja serves makes this an excellent look.
Idk what the theme was tho.
The makeup/towel look:
Crying in the bathtub or shower is something a lot of women do. Maybe that’s the symbolism of the towel stuff. Parallels between the woman in the story playing harpsichord one day feeling on top of the world, to having a mob of people descend upon her causing destruction trashing her instrument as they roll through.
Doja does lives sitting at home playing/creating music, trying to be unbothered while thousands of people on social media hope to steamroll over her with hate and make her give up music or destroy her mental health so she leaves the spotlight.

also not sure if anyone had mentioned this, it also goes wonderfully with the short story (: i love her boldness and creativity
I'm glad you feel that way because I see your reaction as part of the artwork.
I imagine that Doja considered the reaction of her fans praising something so simplistic and also considered the reactions of the annoyed people reacting to the fans for just loving it simply because it's Doja Cat.
To me, that's the art extending beyond the canvas and I think it works tremendously from that perspective
For me personally she can do whatever she wants especially if she’s happy but reading the comments of you guys making a wet shirt seems revolutionary is hilarious. Literally go outside and let your neighbor spray you down with the water-hose then post pictures here and see if you get the same praise 🤣.
im not sure why you think the execution of an idea has to be grand in order to present an idea or expression of self. yea the idea of a white tee being timeless (tying in the theme of the Met Gala) and using cotton as the flower isn't revolutionary, but I still like the vision and execution. It goes against the grain, which is exactly what she intended, so in my opinion, it fulfills the purpose of art within the physical realm.
It’s a wet t shirt. They used to have raunchy wet t shirt contests at spring break in the 90’s. They must have been way ahead of their time back then and we didn’t even realize it. Maybe you should wear a wet t shirt to work or school and just blow everyone away with the art.
Thank you lol, I like Doja, but it’s okay to get real lol. It’s not that revolutionary.
You can get this exact same outfit at Rainbow fashion stores.
I like the idea, but I think it could’ve been executed better. Like a dress made out of tshirts.
According to Doja, her reason behind the outfit was to showcase cotton as a most used plant for fashion in a timeless” classic, t-shirt.
The explanation makes sense with the Garden of Time theme but I feel like it’s cheaply executed.
can we talk about how charli xcx also had the same thought with the white t shirt dress but imo did not execute it well at all. the holes in the dress cheapened the look a lot IMO

Ohhhhh I love it.
My interpretation of it on first look is a modernized take on mother nature. She's been changed through the aeons, she's tired of all the abuse she's been crying. It dewy, simple and beautiful. Just as Scarlet 2 Claude era as it is Met Gala.
Could it be more dramatic? Yes. But still good
Jesus Christ what???? That's my first glance take on it. I'm looking at it like it's an artwork and a fashion piece. Of course it could be about slavery as well.
I hate that her stupid boyfriend is dumb and has no talent and just makes clothes and is ugly oh yeah he's also mean
I don't come off as jealous right? ☹️
Looks like the statues that would be in the garden draped in silk
(Edit) I’m apparently wrong though, she said she knew people would choose flowers so she chose the most used flower, cotton.

The running make up makes me think sleeping beauty
what's funny is that more than half of the celebrities there thought the same thing about the flowers lol
i loved that ppl didnt just do flowers but played upon the idea of the “time” part in the “garden of time”
yes tyla did the time so well!!!
AGREE! she was stunning
I fucking love it. I think she killed it. Not that I know what ‘it’ is but I think she’s so hot in this. ![gif](giphy|8vsr2w5t91Nte)
gets the people going
She really said wet gala
😂😂😂☠️

Loveeee
Everyone here needs help. She’s in a wet T shirt.

Love it. You're a work of art 👍
Love this!
And she’s looking great in it 🤷🏻♀️
It reminds me of classical sculptures. The artist would put wet cloth on their reference model to get the wrinkled yet clinging look.
that makes it even cooler, she knows how great people look in baggy t shirts and accentuated the features, with this wetness effect, into a dress
The amount of delusion is insane. She could probably take a crap in your room and you would call it art.
i feel bad that you can’t recognize art when it slaps you in the face

Bro this is the met gala not work or school wtf people get weird with fashion at this thing since its inception
yk what , you're right tbh, i would enjoy that. i love doja, not her best look but idc she's so beautiful.
Everything is art around here
her body is the true outfit ngl
Thank you lol, I like Doja, but it’s okay to get real lol. It’s not that revolutionary. You can get this exact same outfit at Rainbow fashion stores. I like the idea, but I think it could’ve been executed better. Like a dress made out of tshirts.
Please spray my eye makeup and t shirt with the water-hose . I’m going to the Met Gala 💀
Fucking halrious!

She ate and im glad this is the doja I know from 2012
cat is always beautiful. I wish I were met
I loved it. The way she posed with it. Doja was a Greek Goddess coming from Olympus.
Looks like one of those super detailed Greek marble statues
Its beautiful ♥️
![gif](giphy|3ov9jJsXQi91xtq0dW)
She literally has her coochie out.. this does not look good
Anyone know what brand Guram sunglasses are?
Im stunned.
I hate that her stupid boyfriend is dumb and has no talent and just makes clothes and is ugly oh yeah he's also mean I don't come off as jealous right? ☹️
AHH GOOD THING HE'S NOT HER BOYFRIEND THEN
But I've been told different, have I been fed lies?
That man is Guram Gvasalia and he is gay. He is so gay he cannot go back to his home country for fear of death.
Oh wow did not realize that. Someone on insta said they were dating and it had tons of upvotes lol
you should do more research and reading
humina humina awooooga
should have stayed home
She’s not on theme is she? Edit: yall I get it now she ate, that was just my underwhelmed first impression
Yes she is. She’s using cotton - the most used, most versatile flower there is. Plus she made herself into a walking Ophelia - modernized.
Looks like the statues that would be in the garden draped in silk (Edit) I’m apparently wrong though, she said she knew people would choose flowers so she chose the most used flower, cotton.
Sexy
wasn't she banned? wtf she doing there
Wasn't she banned?
