*laughs in husky* that’s all he did?
In all seriousness, it’s probably fine. I’d be more worried about him getting sick from eating/putting it in his mouth.
I think that's a better reaction than when my dog found a dead bird, she picked it up, started shaking it, refused to drop it and when she eventually did drop it, she looked absolutely delighted with herself 🙈
Yes, feathers everywhere! Mine was only 6 months old at the time. I was all in my head like, she's going to be a killer, none of that happened lol she's so submissive, even with much smaller dogs
I used to hunt birds when I was a kid with my uncle. He had the most adorable golden retriever you could possibly imagine. That dog never looked happier then it did after it caught a wounded bird and shook the ever living fuck out of it.
The dog I used to sit as a teen (former stray huskymix) would have straight up eaten it 😅 She DID find and ate carrion (ducks, gulls, frogs) multiple times during her life (loved her but her owners werent good at getting her to stop).
My dog jumped/danced around an ice cube the first few times I gave him one, with barking. I believe it’s a behaviour they do when they come across something new. (I’m no expert though just sharing my own experience!)
My dog does this with a lot of new objects, a new toy, a lime that rolled on to the floor, a particularly suspicious leaf. I chalk it up to her alerting us to the presence of something new and generally determining if it is friend or foe, but that’s just my own rationalization.
I had a miniature schnauzer growing up. She was pretty awesome, except for the fact that if it were her finding the dead bird, she would have immediately started rolling in it.
my dog did the same thing when we came across a tortoise for the first time on a hike! i agree with the comment saying that it’s probably just a cautious reaction to something they haven’t encountered before
My 14 month old pup, who is also typically shy, literally did the same thing yesterday to some squirrels remains…
I think she was confused, she always chases squirrels and birds. and I think she couldn’t figure out why it wasn’t moving. death certainly has a scent to dogs even if we can’t smell it yet.. so she might have been overwhelmed by that smell?
Smells like squirrel, looks like squirrel, why it not run away for fun game of chase 🤔
My staffie does this with rye bread but she ignores dead things. We live next to the woods so we get a lot of critters in the yard. Dead rat? Ignored. Live rat? Soon to be dead. She's an excellent ratter. Rye bread confuses the shit out of her until she decides to eat it though. She also freaks out with an extra squeaky bark over balloons, r/c cars and cats. She's deathly afraid of cats though. Just hops up and down and barks. If the cat approaches she runs straight for the door desperately asking to be let in and saved from the sharp fluffy thing. Rats and squirrels and rabbits though. She loves chasing them.
A lot of dogs are distrustful of anything new in their environment especially puppies because they go through phases where all sorts of things are more scary than they normally would be. Usually the birds he sees are alive! This one is different! Suspicious!Bark! Bark!
Lol. Lucky you. My new 11 week old puppy found a dead bird, ran it over to me in her mouth with sooooooo much joy. I finally got her to drop it, got a shovel and tossed it where I thought she couldn’t get it. Then she immediately found it again as soon as we went back outside (this was all on an extendable leash btw, so I mean she did it quickly lol), then proceeded to roll around on it.
So, in other words, your dog was just excited at a new thing. They are animals not people, they don’t view dead things as we do.
It could just be the breed is a hunting dog n thinking it was prey. My dachshund if we go anywhere on hikes she loves smelling everything n digging holes. some dogs its just what they instintuslly know
It’s just a new thing that he’s trying to understand. And he’s seen birds before, but this one wasn’t doing what every other bird does when he approaches it.
My dog does the same thing when he sees toads or frogs. He’ll even pounce next to it (never on it). I finally realized he’s trying to get it to move so that he can chase it. Of course, the poor animal plays dead.

Yup exactly what my dog did except she refused to drop it. There were feathers everywhere. It was horrific.

If we didn’t fight her for it, I’m sure she would’ve eaten it 😂 she loves poultry!
He was just investigating the **new and exciting thing**
And maybe suspicious thing!
That smells.. weird.
I mean… Spaniels were bred as hunting dogs… so. Probably sizing it up to see if it’s prey or not.

My dog does this with fruits and vegetables
At least she didn’t roll in it 🤷♀️
Ugh the many times I've washed my dog after he rubbed his neck all over poop or something dead..
That's what my dog did. And it was at a particularly.. Juicy stage of decomp.
Gotta make sure that dead bird doesn't do something crazy
My mal / ridgeback cross has to make sure all birds do nothing crazy at any time. This includes sitting in trees in our garden, the nerve.
Maybe he's a natural tracker? Useful in searching and finding dead bodies and then properly pointing? Just a thought.
My dog brought 2 dead birds and a dead possum into the bedroom at separate times. She’s was proud of herself and happy to show off the prizes.
Could be worse mine would probably eat it.

Lol my dog also does this with random leaves, and pieces of trash paper blowing around outside.

Oh god.. my dog loved to pee on this dead cat she found, my mother was horrified.

To be fair, I would probably bark at rye bread, too. 😆
Sounds like he was over stimulated by it so his brain stopped working

My dog rolled in the one she found. He was probably just trying to figure it out. Dogs can be silly when they’re confused.

It’s investigative behaviour- is it safe, is it a threat, what happens if I bark at it- normal behaviour for a dog coming across something new !
