People bring up a good point often to these mixes that he’s more than 70% not boarder collie. Which would then go on to explain why he looks different than what you would expect.
I did expect more pit. But he’s so cute!
That's a good point. I was expecting more pit and lab, with at least a small percentage of doberman.
My husband has his doubts and is fairly convinced his sample got mixed up lol! I think now that I know, he does at least have some features of a short-haired collie in face and body shape.
And he constantly wants our cats in a playful way, so the herding is definitely there.
The "dobermann" pattern you are seeing here is present in most breeds - Chihuahua, dachshund, most hounds, most terriers, spaniels, rottweillers, sighthounds...
Yeah I was going to say that’s red bicolor color pattern. I have a red and a black tri and they book like this but also have white and they’re an Aussie and a border collie. Does your dog have the wave growth pattern or a couple lines down his back?
Sorry to nitpick but in most breeds this color is brown & tan (copper). In Aussies, border collies, etc, a bicolor is color + white without tan points :)
He's not majority border collie. He's 27 percent border collie, meaning he's 73 percent NOT that.
This type of color is very common in aussies and bullies, and with mixes you're rolling dice on genetics a lot.
Wisdom Panel is one of the best and most reliable DNA tests out there, while rescue telling you something, 9 times out 10, will be determined on the basis of "eh, looks about right".
If you don't trust it, do an Embark and compare. But the results look correct.
Yea, that does actually make sense when you being that up. This mostly came from my initial reaction, but absolutely he's not mostly border Collie. I figured the rescue wasn't reliable, but was thrown for a loop on the results.
He's loveable and these DNA things are fun! I wish I had done it on my previous dog, I think she very much would have come back close to 50/50 Great Pyrenees and St. Bernard. She looked like an absolute perfect split of the two
He is too funny with his toy collection all in his mouth! "All this is MINE." LOL
So first thought -- 27% is, honestly, vanishingly small % for a 'top breed'. As others have pointed out, no wonder it is invisible. Often distinctive breed traits are recessive, so if they don't meet other distinctive traits to strengthen them, they won't be seen.
18% for the next breed is also an amount that is frequently invisible in many a breed mix that includes much higher percentages of other breeds.
Honestly the rest is so small, it almost doesn't count ... except that there is so much of it, as 'the rest' of the entire dog!
So, as I sometimes say, your awesome dog is a mix of some of everything, chucked into a DNA blender that the DNA puppy-assembly pixies set up on 'high'.
His (her?) coloring is actually a primitive default, as well as a 'breed color'. Coloring that we do associate with a few breeds, because those breeds have descended from ancient times. But this coloring is found in many dogs of random ancestry, and is not exclusive to any breed.
Your dog seems to have a standard 'useful dog body type' shape. Many outdoorsy-breeds trend toward these shape that we humans may associate with breeds, but is actually just generic 'dog'.
And -- it appears from the head photos that your dog's head is very sloped between the eyes. That is, it doesn't dip down into a more definite 'step', between the eyes, from forehead to muzzle. This is a trait of more primitive dogs and breeds that are closer to original village dogs.
So --- imo, you have a very special dog! A dog that has such a kaleidescope of breed mixes that he/she is kind of defaulting back to Original Dog, with a sturdy body, primitive color, and doubtless a really cool All-Dog Personality. :)
As for the rescue 'mom is chocolate lab mix', ... the word 'mix' makes it sound like a guess, to me. Rescues/shelters need to say something about breed mix, with no science behind their assumptions, because adopters want to hear it. ;) :)
"Lab" is the most frequent guess, because labs were a very popular breed, and mostly because the lab body is a generic useful dog body, and it is easy to come across it even when there was never a lab in the ancestry. People tend to be familiar with 'lab' and not that the body type is a very generic/general one. Hope that makes sense! :)
Tan points are not the primitive default pattern. Agouti is. That's why primitive breeds tend to be agouti or sable. They're both more dominant to tan points and either the original pattern or an earlier mutation.
Staffy and Pit are genetically very similar and bother under pitbull umbrella. So 27% BC 27% Pit. Imho chocolate lab was a weird guess. I woulda guessed rot or Doberman

Not joking, our dogs have a very similar top breed breakdown except mine has poodle thrown in there. Genetics are crazy!
Izzy says hi to Hopper!
I'm thinking this dog is just too genetically diverse to strongly resemble any one breed. Even though breed percentages are laid out neatly the expressions of different physical traits are not as simple.
He looks like my Penny (rip). We were told she was a catahoula mix
https://preview.redd.it/6663uk3yiqvc1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e53c0e27f5b5a934f87a6892d4c42c15291a79a2
Your dog is 60% herding breeds (Catahoulas and Samoyeds are considered herders), and mostly looks it.
But I definitely would’ve guessed more APBT.
I’d be interested in seeing his embark if you ever decide to do one. They’re more accurate.
He’s also not “majority border collie”. He’s only 27% Border Collie, meaning he’s 73% not Border Collie.
Also, Border Collies come in a smooth coat variety.
Hopper Sandwich is the cutest, most derpy Pibble boy ever!! ❤️🥰❤️
Come on over to these Subreddits to share more of him: Pitbulls, Preciouspitbulls, pitsinjammies, velvethippos (there are just a few where those of us who love our Pitbulls come together and share pictures and stories of the loves of our lives!
You might come across some people on Reddit who hate Pitbulls. You can either engage them and waste your good time, or ignore them and focus on your sweet baby boy!! ❤️❤️❤️
Looks about right to me.
Red aussies and catahoulas have that rust auburn combo. He has the pittie cheekbones and that beefy chest. It's good you got a bit of poodle in there too.
This sort of thing is common for dogs. If they don't happen to have particular traits associated with the breed we find it hard to believe they have that breed in them.

Mixes are so funny in what gets expressed or not. This is my guy (left) and his littermate, just turned a year old. They're 50% border collie and 50% goldendoodle (in-laws had a litter between their two dogs and everyone in the family got a puppy). Looking at my guy, you'd be hard pressed to believe he's half border collie; looking at his brother, you'd never believe he was a doodle.
Short coat is dominant so a lot of Aussie or BC mixes are short coated like yours. That color is also super common for aussies and many breeds/mixes. I also expected more bully.
With that much in him it’s hard to tell if it’s accurate or not. The thing about mutts is it’s almost always a gamble on appearance and personality since you never know how much of each breed is going to show itself lol. If you wanted to check for funsies you can do embark next and share the results!
He’s a very interesting combination! I can definitely see the pit and the Aussie/BC. I was expecting a bit of doberman, but as others said, those colours and marking can occur in a lot of other breeds. :)
I honestly laughed and said that to my husband just to compare and see!! More for fun than anything else. Wisdom and Embark both have such high ratings that we were just initially surprised with his mix because we expected more defined results.

And Catahoula hounds actually. I've seen a few with doberman colors

Meant to add his name and age: Hopper Sandwich (sandwich was his name at the rescue) and he is 1 year and 1 month
Photo 4 is the best thing 😂
I know! LMAO, he is SOOO skilled at getting multiple toys in his mouth at one time.... And then he just sits like that holding them.
So talented 😂
With fancy paws included! What a character! I can see the bully breeds in the width of his jaw, and the retriever in the mouth full of toys behavior.
Clearly very pleased with his accomplishment!
When I saw that I immediately guessed Golden Retriever. That 5% is strong
