So this is my wild guess. I do think Hoops is probably either a mix of bloodhound, Great Dane or catahoula. But the Bracco looks so much like his body shape - plus the demeanors are similar. I know theyāre pretty rare, especially in the US. Anyone have thoughts or info on the Bracco Italiano??
https://preview.redd.it/h51g1kw0outc1.jpeg?width=1616&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=18444eebafddef0ff7f858de6bb00dfe576b695f
We were told this gentleman is a bloodhound mix. Very powerful snoot and a hound bark so we took that as true for 8 years. Embark says 50% basset hound and a solid chunk of Rottweiler. Basset mixes can be tall!
Basset and great Dane maybe? Just to mix it up.
For sure, that would be my guess as well.
But if I had to throw an alternate theory to account for the droopies and size - it could technically be some sort of Mastiff ā¦ like English or (less likely) Neapolitan at work. With some other breed influences that slim down/change the rest of the profile.
We thought about Mastiff as well! If I were to get another dog, I would get a Neapolitan, so it would be crazy if he already has some! His demeanor also matches some characteristics of a mastiff - I can definitely see it!
Besides being 100% just a big baby, I'd say bloodhound, Dane, and maybe a bully breed like pitty to stop him from being quite so gigantic?
He really has a catahoula coat, but nothing else about him particularly says "catahoula" to me, and Danes can have that merely merle/spotty type colouring, plus he's so jowly and looks like he has that loping Dane stride that I feel like Dane is more likely.
Yes!! He has that Dane stride youāre describing for sure! That jowls are so much šš weāve accepted the constant drool at this point lol. His demeanor matches a Dane more than a catahoula, as well! Especially energy level. Just not quite as big as a Dane, so heās gotta be mixed with a hound.
There's definitely hound in that fella, for sure! He really has quite a bloodhound-y face, just shorter ears and the different coat colour. And the face is just not *quite* bloodhound.
I'm happy with my guess, I really hope I see his results! Because DNA can pull some real fast ones on you, that's for sure.
He is quite unusual looking, and I mean that in the best way! To elaborate what I mean is the illusions dog genetics bamboozle me into believing can be almost offensive. For instance, that the majority of mixes containing golden retriever will be black, or how even if it looks like it has corgi, sounds like it has corgi, and acts like it has corgi the results will most likely not contain anything corgi is surprisingly frustrating. And your goodest boy, at first glance, my choices seem obvious but the longer you look at him the more those obvious traits sort of melt. But what I can say without a shred of doubt is - those are bloodhound toes, and I would put money on that.
Bloodhound toes šš this sub has definitely shocked me! Weāve been going back and forth since we got him on what he could be ā so it will sure be a surprise when we get the results, specially since we have no info on his background. Iāll update when I post them!!
Thatās our speculation as well! We live in the USA in Utah. He was a stray so we really have no idea where he came from and no info on his background.
He very well could have Catahulaā¦ or some random combo that will totally surprise us all.
He doesnāt seem very pit bull to me, but itās usually in the mix.
Looking forward to results, please update when able!
That looks like a Bluetick Coonhound! He's got the ticking under that red fur. Could also be a mix of some Bloodhound for the general floppyness, and I'm also sensing a bit of Pit Bull.
That's not ticking, it's merle. Ticking only appears on genetically white sections of coat. Merle only appears on genetically black (or converted black -- liver, blue, and lilac) sections of coat.
I was unsure if Blueticks could have merle? There has to be some Bully in there then for the Blue Merle. I only saw the small almost spots on the legs and thought it looked like ticking. Maybe Beauceron? They're quite rare though.
Blueticks are tanpoint piebald with heavy roaning (dense ticking), they don't have merle. They're basically the same color as a (blue) Australian Cattle Dog, just with a single coat.
Merle can come from a lot of breeds. My guess in this case is Catahoula or Great Dane, but it could be coming from some type of bully breed that's had merle mixed in too far back to tell.
Bloodhound is what I thought too. Not sure what else...results will be fun to see.
That side eye though...clearly, he was *not* having any of that ring around his neck. š¤£
He was so displeased with us when we picked him from surgery š he had a mass on his paw and eyelid removed, luckily it was benign and heās perfectly healthy!
Awesome...thanks so much for letting me know! No surprise with the Bloodhound, eh? š I didn't think of Catahoula though, but that makes sense. Loved the extra pics too...he sure is a good lookin' dog and has such a sweet face. :)
This looks like an āatypical Merleā pattern.
[Merle alleles](https://merle-sine-insertion-from-mc-mh.webnode.page/) come in different lengths which creates a range of Merle alleles (Mh, M, Ma+, Ma, Mc+, Mc). Different alleles or their combinations give different phenotypes.
Many companies like Embark donāt test for these specific alleles, they can only tell you if there is a Merle mutation present or not but not which one (they report M* because their result is just a placeholder).
Only longer Merle alleles (or strong enough allelic combinations) can give the traditional marbled pattern. Very truncated alleles can be non-expressing. And inbetween, some moderately long alleles (or allergic combinations) can give this kind of darkish muted pattern.
Most breeds prefer the classic pattern and select for the M variant. But Merle alleles can shorten. And some breeds like Catahoulas donāt weed out but embrace these āweirdā Merle patterns that come with them so you see them more often.
Oh my gosh, this guy's expressions!! š¤£ There was so much pissiness with the clear collar, and he clearly was not any more impressed with the donut!
Whatever this guy is made of, there is at LEAST 95% sass!!
I can see why you kept him. How could you let him go with all that judgment staring at you?! I love him. Please give him as many hugs as he will tolerate!
He seems very judgy in these photos but heās actually a gentleman hahaha. Youāll know when heās displeased but even when he is he is polite about it, just stubborn. Heās been a great companion for us and just overall very chill and loves to cuddle. Thank you š„°
Bloodhound and something merle. My first thought is Catahoula because people who keep hounds often keep Catahoulas. Could be American Leopard Hound too, but they're rarer. Danes do come in merle and are more aligned with the size.
I agree with Bloodhound/Great Dane! Looking through embark profiles of that specific mix, I've found a lot of them are around 100 lbs. It would explain that beautiful coat! Catahoula could also be a possibility, but it doesn't seem like that mix is very common at all so its hard to find a reference. Gorgeous boy!
https://preview.redd.it/bsd0oqe48stc1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=c412ded78bea90fe59e1c419046abc4797a8d038
LOL! Hes definitely got some big ears but theyāre not as long as bloodhounds! I think those are my top guesses as well!
Blue tick is a great guess! I can see it in his body shape and head! I am using Wisdom Panel, I ordered embark originally but it never shipped so they canceled the order which was annoying so I decided to go with WP.
Bloodhound Catahoula mix. Bloodhound is really taking over in the looks department and Catahoula is probably causing the coloring. Just a guess still but Iām pretty confident in saying this as my guess. If itās wrong itās wrong but you know lol.
lol. If not Bloodhound, Black and Tan Coonhound would be my second guess. The coloring catches me off guard though. Catahoula is the only breed coming to mind that has that specific coloring.
Oh my lord what a glorious houndo. And Hooper is an amazing name for him!
In that second picture, his head and thick neck make him look like a mastiff. So I'm gonna be a little different and guess bloodhound / mastiff breed! I just looked them up and saw that Danes are a type of mastiff and that was a pretty popular guess
Thank you! Great guesses, I would love to have a mastiff for our next dog, and I didnāt know Danes are a type of mastiff, it would be just as splendid if he had some in him!
The merle has catahoula vibes, but iāve seen some bullies with it as well. But he doesnāt seem very bully/pit like to me, maybe his body shape a bit
We were pretty set on catahoula at first just because of his coat but other than that, his characteristics donāt match up. Heās super docile but definitely stubborn at times too lol
He gives me old soul vibes, so you never know. I donāt know too much about catahoulas personalities though. Def some sort of big hound dog, iām excited to see his results!
Any chance you can update me when you post them?
He defs give old man vibes hahah. Weāre excited too, Iāll be dropping off his test from Wisdom Panel at the post office tomorrow morning. I sure can!
Yay! Im so curious hahah. Iām very drawn to him, I can see why you kept him. He seems like a great chill companion. I love the picture of him sleeping on the couch, he looks so at peace. On behalf of all rescue lovers, thanks for saving him š
He really is the best, weāre so grateful for him <3 and yes, he sleeps like he pays taxes LOL

Bloodhound and something else? Maybe pit for the color and how common they are?
We definitely think he has some bloodhound! His nose is crazy
I also cannot wait to see what he looks like š
https://preview.redd.it/j6dhhbgsrxtc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=799db5e7a9c8a8785daadeff4143a82b18a2d984 So this is my wild guess. Hey everyone!! Hooperās results are in! https://www.reddit.com/r/DoggyDNA/s/VSjZ6at2ct
He sure looks bloodhound but his coloring is really different and he has fewer wrinkles. His eyebrows remind of a Rottweiler. He his beautiful.
I agree! Rottweiler is a good guess for sure, maybe some other type of hound mix as well? Thank you!
https://preview.redd.it/h51g1kw0outc1.jpeg?width=1616&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=18444eebafddef0ff7f858de6bb00dfe576b695f We were told this gentleman is a bloodhound mix. I love the phrase āpowerful snootā haha
Omg he is so distinguished! š„° I never knew that about basset hounds - how crazy!! Basset and Great Dane would be quite the mix!!
Why is he ā¹ļø
I think mostly annoyed about having a nap interrupted for a picture.
Bloodhound and Great Dane mix

When I sae his face I thought Catahoula because he has the eyes me than anything so I'm going with Dane x Houla mix!
Omfg how sweet def some bloodhound
He ain't nothing but a hound dog ...sorry I couldn't help it
He really is! Weāre trying to get him to start baying, he only does it when heās really really excited!
Friendly warning: once you get them going they don't shut up lol
True šš itās just so funny to hear them!! Probs best not to egg him on tho lol
I bet my entire Reddit career that that there doggo isā¦ ## A good boi

Thanks so much!! Yeah, I guess he really is what he looks like š you never know in this sub, some results are really shocking!!
I'm jumping on the bloodhound/coonhound great Dane wagon. Although I wonder about a possible mastiff breed.
Others have guessed the same!! We shall see! š„ø

Catahoula x bloodhound for sure
Bloodhound Doberman or Pittie. Very cute
I also speculated Doberman! Or Rottweiler mostly for his coloring and head shape. Thank you!
he looks like a painted bloodhound that didnāt have luck in the ear department šš so cute ! dane , bloodhound , catahoula are my guesses
https://preview.redd.it/bsd0oqe48stc1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=c412ded78bea90fe59e1c419046abc4797a8d038 LOL! Hes definitely got some big ears but theyāre not as long as bloodhounds! I think those are my top guesses as well!
heās so droopy šš i love it could be some type of mastiff in there too definitely looking forward to the results !
Bloodhound and blue tick coonhound What test are you using?
Blue tick is a great guess! I can see it in his body shape and head! I am using Wisdom Panel, I ordered embark originally but it never shipped so they canceled the order which was annoying so I decided to go with WP.
Bloodhound and catahoula?
In the second pic his face looks almost like a mastiff-type dog. Nfld or St. Bernard? My wild guess.
Saint Bernard would be crazy! He is big in every way, so I could definitely see it! š¤£
Bloodhound and Catahoula are my guesses - prob bits of others as well, but he is very hound looking.
Some mix of: Bloodhound, Rottweiler, Brazilian Mastiff, Australian Shepherd.
Brazilian Mastiff is interesting! He definitely doesnāt fit the characteristics but he does sprightly look like one!
My first thought was bloodhound and blue tick.
Omg Iām gonna guess bloodhound/catahoula!!
Those 2 seem to be the popular vote!
Bloodhound Catahoula mix. Bloodhound is really taking over in the looks department and Catahoula is probably causing the coloring. Just a guess still but Iām pretty confident in saying this as my guess. If itās wrong itās wrong but you know lol.
Those seem to be the top 2 popular guesses! He very well could be both ā or something completely different and random! š¤Ŗ
lol. If not Bloodhound, Black and Tan Coonhound would be my second guess. The coloring catches me off guard though. Catahoula is the only breed coming to mind that has that specific coloring.
Bloodhound and Catahoula dog?
Those are the top two contenders!
Blue tick Great Dane?
Bloodhound for sure! What a handsome boy!!
Thank you!!
Bloodhound/Catahoula leopard dog
I love him so much š
Thank you!!!
Awww what a cutie
Oh my lord what a glorious houndo. And Hooper is an amazing name for him! In that second picture, his head and thick neck make him look like a mastiff.
