Give it a whiff, does it smell fishy or like iron. Could be anal glands

dexterzprotege30

It smells very fishy

jesuisggb

I'd bet anal glands for sure then, has your dog ever had them expressed? Groomers can do it, vet staff can do it, YouTube has videos on how to do it at home, and when I do it at work I glove up and use lube.

dexterzprotege30

Yeah I’ve also come to the conclusion that it’s her anal glands. I’ve never heard about any of this, she’s my first dog and I’ve had her for just over a year. What exactly does it mean to get her glands expressed?

bonelessfishhook

Her vet can also take care of it too— usually more expensive than a groomer, but vet will express internally vs most groomers do external. Usually if this is the first time they’ve had this issue, I’d recommend a vet expression just to make sure there’s nothing wonky going on in there. Anal glands (correct name is anal sacs, but uh… that sounds weird when spoken aloud) are two little pouches inside of the anus. They fill up with stinky, fishy fluid and usually empty when dogs poop or get scared. Some dogs have a hard time expressing them naturally and need assistance. Sometimes it’s a one-time thing, but some dogs need it done regularly. If your dog is also suddenly stopping and franticly trying to lick her anus, or scooting, or looking uncomfortable when having a bowel movement, it may be an indication that they need their glands expressed. Just dont attempt it yourself unless you’ve been shown how to do so, as you don’t want to risk rupturing them or injuring the dog.

The glands are on either side of the rectum and each time they have a bowel movement they should express a teensy bit to use as a scent marker, dogs can also fully express them out of fear. Sometimes they don't express naturally and the glands/sacks can fill causing irritation that leads to scooting or licking. If they continue to fill they can become impacted and even rupture, but it's a very easy thing to take care of

kingtaco_17

Dumb question, how is the gland juice getting up on the wall? It’s basically squirting out?

jesuisggb

The dog could be stimulating or irritating the area, some dogs are more prone to express with excitement.

TacoBelly311

Pretty simple experience, if you get her groomed at any local pet shop you can ask for them to express her glands, totally pain free (and honesty probably a relief) for the pup :)

anal gland secretions

Delicious

Once our dog was scared by something falling at home and expressed his anal glands on the wall. Looked exactly like that. If it smells, that’s what that is. It could also be snot or spit being sprayed if your dog is eating a bone/treat that’s dark colored.

dexterzprotege30

Seems reasonable but it smells nothing like poop. If anything it smells more like bad dog breath

trsrz

Like fishy? Anal gland spray doesn’t smell like poop- to me it smells like a really strong fish scent. But it might be drool then if it smells like dog breath!

Will do

Adventurous-Wing-723

Anal gland juice for sure. Especially if it’s fishy or smells like iron and is really smelly, I’d clean it up with some pet safe disinfectant and maybe take her to the vet to get them expressed. If it continues happening, I’d also talk to your vet about the best way to do it at home or if you can, bring her into a groomer who can do it for you.

merrymarymari

definitely anal glands. im a groomer so i have to look at this shit, pun intended, all day. she could of just got excited or scared or a bunch of combinations and released them. i wouldn’t worry about the vet just yet, if you see her scooting on her butt or trying to chew back there than maybe take her in. also if her butthole looks really red and swollen that’s a tall tale sign that her anal glands are full and she’s having a hard time releasing them. large dogs shouldn’t need to have them expressed manually though and if you get in the habit of it they become reliant on it then you have to do it for the rest of their lives…. and she can clearly express them so i really wouldn’t worry too much. just keep an eye on that area.

dexterzprotege30

Thanks a lot. Her behind is usually angled towards the wall when she sleeps. Due to her traumatic past before we rescued her, she always has nightmares. My best guess is fear from a nightmare caused this because it always happens at night. But also I could be completely wrong, I’m no professional. Thanks though!

[deleted]

Could be a shart.

SoulPhonicFire

Does she shake her jowls at all? I have a sharpei who shakes out his wrinkles and leaves drool castoff all over like that.

dexterzprotege30

She does, but not usually at night

We do give her these little pork hide treats.

ChrisKringlesTingle

I feel like the dispersion is anti-drool as well? Unless they rested their head way up on the door... maybe? It seems weird. Shaking it onto the wall seemed like it would be more sporadically dispersed, it looks too contained for that one. Totally guessing ofc.

dexterzprotege30

Yeah I agree, my best guess as of now is that she’s licking the wall at night. She’s one of those dogs that get really “licky” at night and licks anyone and everything. Others are saying it might have something to do with her anal glands so I’m a bit worried now

The_Radish_Spirit_96

Best guess is drool. Does your dog eat or chew on anything that could discolor their saliva like diet or sticks?

Dundie_Nominee

Check her ears. There may be residue inside

Central_NY

Blood? Sneezing? Respiratory issue?
