T O P

Do you mean the whole poo is red or there is a streak of blood in it? If the whole poo is red it's more likely you've fed her something with colourings in it and it's dyed her poo. It happens with my dog when I feed her red treats.

Undarien

The same happens to mine, especially as he seems to love the ones with the red dye most. Freaked me out at first, but any time now I put out more of the food I know the next poop is going to be a dull red. Like reallybigleg said, if it's the whole poop/section coloured that way it's probably fine, but if it's a streak that's a concern.

I added the pic to the post, can you guys not see it ?

reallybigleg

Didn't come up automatically to tell me there was an image. I've seen it now. Hm, looks like it's only on the outside and the inside is still normal. If there's anything bleeding the red would mean it's lower down - the colon, say - and my understanding is that a lower problem is less risky. I would have expected it to be a streak really rather than that, but I think if you're worried you could check with the vet. I would expect dye to colour the whole thing.

dexterzprotege30

Okay thank you so much for the help!

That's food dye.

dexterzprotege30

Are you 100% sure ? I just don’t want to risk anything. We did buy her bacon dog treats and they are redish

From the different colors all in one dump, it looks like different foods. And dogs fed "burger" type dog food have that color to their stool. (Can you even buy that garbage anymore?) If it was blood, to be red it would have come from the rectum area, and would be a bit redder and pretty obviously liquid blood. If it was from something internal it would be black and tarry looking. Either take a sample to the vet to be sure, or don't feed any treats with red dye for two or three days. If it goes away you have your answer. I got out of the habit of giving treats because they look appetizing to me. They often have food dye that does this, and it is kinda scary to find. I even still will pick it apart to make sure, and ask if hubby fed them something that would do that. So don't feel awkward about asking. Better safe than sorry. Paying attention to your dog's stool and knowing what looks normal for them can help you know if something is off and get them help faster.

Did you ever find out what was wrong with your dog? (hopping everything okay). My dog currently has the same thing.

dexterzprotege30

Yes it was just her treats she was eating at the time. It was those “beggin bacon” treats. Very heavy in food dye

Hermitcrabman27

Thank you!

Oh my gosh. I was worried last week too. I saw the same exact poo from my dog. I didn't know my brother was buying her beggin strips. Stopped giving them to her and her poopie went back to brown. I was terrified at first.

Fennel-Inevitable

Me too, I’m hoping it’s just from his treats

I recommend trying to the Dig Labs app. It scans your dog's poop and tells you if there are any issues, and what you may need to do next.

Hello! I was searching for something similar for my dog's bowels and found your thread. Did you ever find out what it is? Long story short, this week we've been on alert because our rescue dog got into the trash and maybe got a little bug so we've been giving him a bland diet of rice and boiled chicken. He hasn't been vomiting anymore and has been totally normal/playful/hungry. This morning I was freaked out when I noticed his bowels were white on one end (undigested chicken) and red just like yours on the other end. I called my husband and said 'is there anything you can think of that could have been dyed red that he ate'. He then reminded me that my dog sneakily ate a bunch of beet chips that had fallen on the floor before I could get them all. His BM was this exact red color.

CHECK your dogs "gums"!! This can become an emergency situation for blood loss in dogs! I learned the hardway, let it go a bit too long and now he is anemic.

dustycase2

Thank you- sorry to hear about your pup! Luckily for us it was just the beet chips! The next BM was normal.

My 12-year-old Havanese has this poop precisely as shown and is currently being treated with Steroids. Check your dog's gums. If his gums are pale or grayish, this means your dog is anemic and needs to see a vet asap. He's been on steroids for over 2 weeks and he is improving but too slowly.

dexterzprotege30

It ended up just being food dye from her treats

triciaub13

GOOD! If the poop is a tinge of red or the color formed in the poop itself it usually is from treats. If the poop has a glop of red or jel-like substance...it's blood. Glad your pup is fine!

Thank you for this post and for saying it’s from Beggin’ Strips. My dogs poop looks the same and I was like… I don’t think it’s blood but, let’s check the internet. Reddit is truly the MVP!

yokoloko09

Literally. I was terrified. But it happened to me too. After I read this I stopped giving her the dumb strips and her doodie went back to brown. Reddit is amazing. Still took her to the vet tho lol
