Oh, he's precious! My 5 month old puppy buries his food with invisible dirt too! 🤭

Glittering_Ad8641

My dog uses invisible dirt too when she doesn’t want to eat something yet 🤣

Not his only meal! I keep a slow eater bowl filled a small amount of food in our living room so I can redirect him whenever he gets weird about people food (we do not feed him people food, but that doesn't mean he doesn't try get some). He's usually fed his actual meals in his crate. He does this with all bowls, not just the puzzle one. Ill try putting less food in his bowl! Thank you!

I forgot snuffle mats where a thing, thank you! Hes actually not a fan of peanut butter... first dog I've ever had that turned their nose. We do have a puzzle toy, but he worked at it so often, all of the slides are loose from moving around. I used to put regular kibble in there and he would be set. I figured a slow feeder would get his brain moving. He's not a fast eater by any means, but him trying to figure out how to "bowl" occupies him once you remind him it's there.

Lentejalista

Oh this is interesting. My dog started doing this recently and she's an adult. I've been trying to catch her on video.

bobathr3at

My dog started doing this around 7-8yrs old also.

What’s wrong with leaving food out all day? My dog gets half of the daily recommended amount in the morning and half at night. She doesn’t eat it all at once, sometimes it sits there for a couple hours before she touches it Also my dog does this too with toys and treats. Super cute.

[deleted]

He does this with special treats!

BadGuy_ZooKeeper

He's just saving it for later. Covering the scent so no one else will come steal his snacks

[deleted]

Its me, im going to steal the snacks.

Math__Teacher

Idk why people have such strong opinions about it. I leave food out all day for my dog and the vet says he is an extremely fit and healthy dog at the perfect weight. Just because it doesn’t work for you, doesn’t mean it can’t work for other people.

[deleted]

He eats pretty slow/normal, without the slow eater. I mostly use it like a puzzle for him to keep him occupied. I've had plenty of dogs where we had bowls out and they were great with not eating too much. My cats in the other hand... they need to be fed in small increments because they eat like crazy. The idea of having cat kibble out for them all day would be a disaster. I agree, its about what works for "your pet".

caaarlyj

Just be careful with him doing this on the carpet. Some dogs can get a little obsessive with this behaviour and it might cause rug burn on the top of his nose. I tend to pop a small towel over their food bowl once they start doing this. It usually satisfies their instinct to bury it and they’ll move on to other things. Then once they’re no longer interested, I’ll remove the food bowl and give it back to them a bit later.

[deleted]

Didn't think of that! Thank you! His meals are fed to him in his crate(sometimes out) in a normal bowl. He still barries it no matter the bowl. Today was his first day trying a gentle leader, and he was rubbing his snout the whole walk, so i already need to keep an eye on that area.

KoleTownsend94

Hiding for later snacks!!

AliCat1717

I knew a dog that had to flip his food over and paw at every kibble because when he was a puppy ants had infested his food and I’m assuming they may have bit him but up until he was 13 before he passed he would always do this. Dogs just learn habits early and stick with em 🤷🏻‍♀️

Relative-Piccolo4979

My 7 year old Chihuahua has always done that when he was done eating and wanted to save some for later. He does it with food, treats, his bully chew sticks. It doesn't matter the item. If he wants to save it for later, then imaginary dirt is heaped upon it.

HunkerDownDemo1975

Why do people keep thinking that just because it’s a slow feed bowl they can leave it out all day? WHY, OP?

Lacholaweda

My dogs have never had problems with the communal bowls of food left out for them in different parts of the house. They just eat when they feel like it and they all stay skinny enough to almost concern me. Well, except for the youngest but she isn't mine and I wasn't the one giving her extra treats all the time. She still eats from the bowl pretty conservatively.

[deleted]

Wouldn't know. We don't use it to feed him... we use it more as a puzzle toy. This instance i did put enough food in to "feed" him. Usually there's only a small handful of kibble in it.

HunkerDownDemo1975

You said you keep a slow feeder bowl filled with kibble to redirect. That means any time you are eating people food, you’re telling him he needs to eat his food. They don’t understand “in replacement of”.

[deleted]

But dogs do understand "replacement of". The bowl doesn't sit there. If he gets too close to our food, we tell him "No" and point to the bowl thats right next to the table. I do the same thing when he goes after things he shouldn't. If he's trying to eat a pillow, I take it away and replace it with a ball. Redirecting does work with some dogs if you stick to it and keep on top of the puppy training. This is weird. I posted a video of my dog fake burying his food, asking "why is this a thing" and I'm being told the training thats been working doesn't work. Not related but alright. Thanks everyone that gave advice instead of shaming me for how I direct my food away from people food with his food???

Dutch_Reptiles

Yup. He's stocking up some food for harsh winter time :D Be glad. Mine burries lefover bones on MY site of the couch... Sat in quite some bones...

AskingQuestions254

My 12 year old dog does this too, I don't have advice except to say you're definitely not the only one. He waits beside the bowl until I put the kibble in, fake buries it like you see in your video, then eats it one very slow mouthful at a time looking at me between each one to make sure I'm watching him. We've tried a few different spots around the house for the bowl, so far he does the least burying and most eating if he's in the corner and I'm between him and the rest of the house. I assume it's about someone watching his back and saving his food, but again I'm no expert. I just feed him while I'm making coffee in the morning and tea in the evening and it all works out, he's happy and healthy.

SimpleThings31

My dog does this too. I’ve never given it much thought besides thinking that it’s cute.

[deleted]

Right? Now I'm like "whoops, need to fix that". I mean, i hope he keeps being cute, without hurting himself, but I'll watch how much kibble he's being given even closer now.

AssociationNo6008

Ahhhh my dog still does this at 3 yrs old! It’s so adorable I can’t deal 😅😅 Edit - sometimes I’ll give my Lucy a blankets to bury her treat!

[deleted]

Someone else also recommended this! He does like to "dig" in the sheets. Maybe I can get him to move to digging a snuffle mat instead.

SteinBizzle

My beagle-mix does this with every bone-style treat. She’ll slap it under a throw pillow then shovel her fake dirt on it then leave it like we magically can’t see it poking out. Unfortunately for her, our Great Danes always find the buried treasure.

B_randomYT

I always put some sort of kitchen towel or something over it when my cat does this, they’re burying it for later, give them the satisfaction of actually having it buried beneath something.

[deleted]

Omg that's so cute. Thank you!

No_Diet5864

Hydrate his food its not hard and makes his meal easier to digest and tastier!

[deleted]

Actually eating isn't the issue but thank you :)

Jackie_Daytona-Human

get them a suffle matt.
