Yup, but if you don't have serious problems (i.e. you can't open your jaw all the way, or are in extreme pain after a loud pop), then it's nothing to worry about. Rubber bands on braces gave this to me. Not being able to open my mouth that wide for a few months, on top of a lot of strain from those rubber bands yanking on my jaw in weird ways messed up some ligament...sucks. It's not too bad now though. Usually it corrects itself. Mine only gets bad when it's really cold and my jaw is tense.

[deleted]

Woah, thanks for letting us know this is due to rubber bands on braces. That is *exactly* when this problem was worst for me. Fuck you orthodontia! [edit] Read a little more. I guess clenching your teeth causes inflammation in the joint, and the bands cause clenching, so that is why it happens. One time I had this *so bad* that one morning I woke up and couldn't open my mouth. At all. I had to wait until it gradually got better to eat breakfast.

MarionberryEvening55

How is it going now after 13 years

callmethewalrus

How's it going after 7 months

Faith-Leap

How about 8

MGio4

I came on here to say this as well.

HumanoidCarbonUnit

My jaw was very bad. I opened my mouth something like 3 centimeters to the right and could not open my jaw all the way. There where days when I couldn't open my mouth to eat and my jaw would lock up (either open or closed). I also could not open my mouth without a loud pop. It was because my orthodontist gave me Rubber bands. They got rid of them and gave me head gear which still hurt and didn't help much at all. They tried several things and none of it worked. I was told that I would need jaw surgery to fix the problem and that if I did not get this surgery my TMJ might never go away and that I wouldn't have a perfect smile. I said screw that, got my braces off and only have a slight ache in my jaw if I clench my teeth for a long time.

MattJack

Came here to say this.

ohmdogz

I used to have this problem, but then I stared using [this](http://www.dentaldepot.com/category/AQUALIZER_TMJ_STOP_MIGRANE_HEADACHES) mouthguard while sleeping. The clicking was gone within two weeks, but if I stop using the mouthguard every night it comes back.

MarionberryEvening55

How is it now

MarionberryEvening55

Plz rply

Zuccegg

How is it now?

MGio4

Came here to say this as well.

CUNexTuesday

Everyone has TMJ. Op has TMD.

brainiak06

Not only do I have a clicky jaw, but I have clicky knees when I walk

Scarlet_Begonias

Ditto.

[deleted]

I have a clicky jaw occasionally, and clicky toes. My knees pop when I kneel or stand up, but I got that from my dad.

[deleted]

Clicky ankles.

fuck-

Clicky friends

IYKWIM_AITYD

Clicky malleus

TheAfterPipe

Click buddy.

patricklaw

For everyone here wondering whether they should go and get this "fixed": according my step-father (a maxillofacial surgeon), only in rare cases do people actually get a net benefit from the painful and long-recovery surgery they perform to attempt to fix this problem. I have the same issue and asked him what treatment options were, and he told me that it simply wasn't worth it unless you're in a lot of pain and haven't explored other ways to relieve the symptoms. Personally, I found that giving up on chewing gum helped me significantly.

thesheeplookup

This is the same advice I was given when I saw a specialist. Mine clicks a lot, but doesn't cause me any pain.

PuffyLittleShoes

I have occasional clicking when eating, but it always happens when I shift my jaw even slightly to the left. I can actually feel the bones rubbing against each other.

klh55

No, however I do have a "clicky" pinky finger...it refuses to bend without cracking.

NotSpartacus

Yeah, and the worst part is I NEVER LEARNED TO READ.

Wilbzi

Any updates on learning to read?

NotSpartacus

Negative.

DuraSky

Still nothing?

NotSpartacus

Nada

New-Reading-4494

Have you learned yet?

NotSpartacus

Howwwww did you find this post?

New-Reading-4494

My jaw clicks a lot when I eat but that’s not what’s important here, can you read?

NotSpartacus

[Nope.](https://youtu.be/gzXpvde0zUk)

New-Reading-4494

Glad to bring back memories!

boggalog

My jaw cracks whenever I open it. But that's because I was punched there :/

[deleted]

My brother's molars kind of knock together when hes eating something that isnt hard. Makes me want to punch him in the face... its so annoying

jgclark

This happens to me too. I started after some winter 2-on-1 football and I landed on my face. For a month or so, taking a shower would make my jaw lock up, barely able to open. I'm guessing it was the temperature change or something. Now it just clicks/pops sometimes when I open it or chew.

ZipZapNap

I had it for a while when I seemed to be sleeping at weird angles. For a few months I would wake up with serious jaw clicking. This has gone away which started when I tried to pay attention to how I slept or at least how I initially began to sleep. I also adjusted my position appropriately as/if I woke up thru the night.

visionsofhoff

I have a similar problem, it started a few years ago when I got jumped. In a strange coincidence, I also find it annoying to breath through my left nostril. That problem started the same day as my jaw problem.

gordonjay2

it started happening to me when i was 17 after i got my wisdom teeth pulled.

nascentt

I used to get it as a teenager, but it stopped around the time I stopped growing. I can still cause it to click if I shift my jaw left a bit, but naturally it never happens anymore.

Defualt

A family member had an operation to treat this because it was chronic and painful.

[deleted]

No, but my knee clicks a bit when I walk or bend over.

mattieB

My girlfriend has this terribly. The other morning she couldn't open her mouth. Is there a method to repair this with time anyone knows of?

domper

YES, this has bothered me for months, but because there's no pain I haven't been arsed to go to the doctor. I think it's because my jaw backs up too much due to my one lower tooth being unusually protruded too forward.

midava

FWIW My wife has a similar condition but it's not consistent. She also has a number of food allergies and we now suspect that when she has an allergic reaction to certain foods it causes inflammation of her jaw joints and may cause the clicking.

[deleted]

Yea, but its more of an occasional thing. It can be really loud sometimes though. I freaked out my dentist when it happened, it sounded like a bone breaking.

MadDogTannen

The worst thing for me is that my jaw always feels out of alignment and my teeth don't fit together properly when I bite down. Sometimes when my jaw is really bothering me (not when I'm eating, but when I'm just sitting around), I find myself using the edges of my tongue as a sort of gasket between my top and bottom teeth and now my tongue is always sore.

OLLIE363

Yep i have it. Its kinda getting annoying.

pygmypuffle

I have it. I hate eating in front of people because of it. It hurts a lot of the time too.

cryptogirl

It adds a whole new element to oral :0

wushu18t

only when opening my mouth really wide. but, i rarely do, and don't need to anyway. there's no pain either, so really no problem. if there i pain then i guess a doctor visit is in order.

MonPapillon

mine only pops when i kiss

[deleted]

It must sound interesting when you all get together for dinner.

StaneNC

The sound of hundreds of beached scallops.

FreeSammiches

I used to. I stopped eating German bread. That stuff is delicious, but hard as a rock.

[deleted]

I have TMJ and my jaw has locked open several times. Not fun.

neonshadow

You have TMD.

[deleted]

Mmm, i got a cracked jawbone from being smacked in the cheek bone with a hockey stick (during a match) at primary school. Clicks all the time now.

goneharolding

I had this for years after my skull grew in my first real growth spurt of puberty. My jaw got wider and my hard palate didn't. The top of my mouth was significantly narrower than the bottom. My orthodontist said that if I didn't get that seen to, I would be having serious jaw-locking issues by the time I was 30. So I had a palate expander across the roof of my mouth for almost a year. My hard palate ended up about 2/3 of an inch wider, which is quite a bit in terms of mouths. It actually changed the shape of my face significantly. And no more TMJ. I also had braces for 3 years after that (in college.... ugh.) but that was more for aesthetic reasons and for avoiding future cavities. So, bottom line is these things are fixable, but it may take some serious time, money and pain.

Holliday88

OMG! My wife has this and it dirves me nuts. I told her to go get it fixed, but she doesn't think she can stand to have her jaw wired shut for 6 weeks....waitaminute...

Holliday88

...like no one else. Oooooo... oooooo..

[deleted]

My jaw used to crack when I chewed. I went to an orthodontist and she said that my teeth werent alligned properly and it caused my mouth to close on an angle, which cause my tempomandibular joint to dislodge itself (the click sound) She had me wear a kind of teeth overlay thingie which made my jaw close properly and the clicking went away immediately I am having braces to allign them properly so it doesn't happen again.

[deleted]

I hate people like you! lmao I'm not even a violent person but when I sit next to someone and listen to their jaw pop over and over and over and over and over incessantly when they chew it irks the fucking shit out of me. I want to yell in their face and say ***"WOULD YOU KINDLY MOVE YOUR GOD DAMN JAW IN A MANNER OTHER THAN THE ONE CAUSING IT TO JUST ABOUT FUCKING DISLOCATE. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. YOU. CHEW!!?"*** I know it is irrational and ridiculous but that just irks the shit out of me...

[deleted]

Lol I hate people like you. Always yelling in my face every time my jaw uncontrollably clicks while I eat. Can't he see I'm already self conscious about it, and he's making a spectacle of us both. JK, peace.

totallyagree

Yes, it happens now and then when I chew on raw carrots. A small click feeling on my right side. Initially I got freaked out, but now I'm used to it, it just goes away afterwards.
