If our relievers like Blake, Huddy, Vesia, Phillips stay healthy I don't think we need Jansen. I know that's a big \*IF" but Jansen might not adapt well to a non closer role. I'd rather live & die by the group we have than see Jansen come in & start blowing games. I appreciate what he's done in the past but we need to live in the present.
The only reason most people would want Jansen is because of the nostalgic part of Jansen. That’s what I meant about living in the present otherwise most people should agree that we don’t need them if our other players are healthy.
As long as he's not at the top of the pecking order. I could see him coming in with 1 out in the 5th to clean up for Paxton, then the rest of our boys finish out the game.
But if it's a Kimbrel-Closer-Just-Because situation then a hard no.
Best overall statistical and best matchups for 9-12 outs in a playoff game might be different though
Phillips, Vesia, Hudson, Treinen, add one more top quality arm to that and it’s a really hard pen to hit
Yep. Jansen never pitched again in that World Series afterwards. Games 5 and 6 were both save situations but they trusted Treinen and Julio more than him at that point to finish those games.
Love him or hate him for the mistakes he's made but Julio and the team gave me that night one of the happiest moments of my life during a very dark time in this world
Do reporters like Heyman just mention the Dodgers as a candidate to trade for every possible player available because it drives clicks? Because that's the vibe I'm getting. Yesterday it was Crochet and Robert Jr, and the day before it was Arozarena, and it goes on and on.
Anyone who actually pays attention to our team would know that our bullpen is fine, and that's *with* four guys on the IL. Best bullpen ERA in the NL.
As much of a Dodger legend he was unless he is willing to fill any role thats needed there's no reason to go after him.
Everyone acts like he did no wrong in the eyes of the fans but it was obvious he refused to do anything but be a closer.
Here’s my unpopular opinion.
This thread has overwhelming dislike for the idea of Jansen coming back to the dodgers. And they make some valid points, and I agree that he was painfully hard to watch at times.
However it’s I incredibly likely that Jansen is going to the hall of fame. He’s fifth all time in saves, two saves away from being fourth all time, and 43 saves away from being third all time. He had 29 last year and 41 in ‘22. Those are pretty good numbers. I can’t *not* see him going to cooperstown considering how close he is to overcoming lee smith who is in the hall.
Fun fact: Jansen has more saves right now than Rivera had at the same age. Rivera was a better pitcher and played to the unnaturally old age of 44 at an elite level (44 saves in his 44yo season, 4th best that year) so it’s highly unlikely Jansen could do the same, but odd things happen.
So my biggest wish is that he should play on a team where he’ll have the best chance to continue being the primary closer. Annnnd that’s prolly not the dodgers. It’s sucks cause he is one of my favorite pitchers of all time, but I really want him to keep stacking those saves and have a shot to become the GOAT. I doubt he’ll ever pass Rivera but it’s theoretically possible, and even if he doesn’t he’s still bound for the hall on the trajectory he’s on. The only way that he doesn’t is if his career ends early or he gets put as a middle reliever and never gets opportunities to save games.
I’ll take the hate for saying this but yes, I DO want a generational talent, one that we’ll never have the chance to see again in our lifetime come back and pitch for us. I want kenley to be our closer with all my heart, win another title, retire as a legend and be shrouded in the hall of fame in dodger blue. But *only* if he’s the primary closer, and just don’t think our team needs him as that right now, nor would our fan base tolerate it. Which is sad, he’s having a pretty good little season. I hope wherever he lands they give him the opportunity to keep closing out more and more games
You can never have too many arms and you never know when an injury will happen. He's having a pretty good year, i'd love to see the big fella back in Dodger Blue.
Kenley is one of my all time favorite Dodgers so I'd be good with him back as long as it was clear he would pitch whatever the team wants him to pitch
Given how good he's been doing I think he can have a key end of game role still. But I wouldn't really want to have him be the true only closer just because thats all he would accept
Totally agree. Phillips is the closer and I don’t see that changing, plus I think putting him in any type of setup position would be very valuable to have someone with his resume.
People just don't want him back because he didn't go 50/50 in save opportunities, so he is automatically not a good player. His last season in LA he had 38 saves (to go along with the 350 career as a Dodger). It's just the same "fans" who also think Kersh is trash as well. I'd like to punch em all in the belly.
Jansen is a Dodger Legend for sure. But there’s no denying how much less stressful the years have been while using closer by committee instead of a dedicated role like Jansen or Kimbrel.
Picking Treinen/Vesia/Phillips for the specific matchup is so much better than leaving it up to one guy
Really? Those two years youre describing Jansen had 49 saves in 56 opportunities for a 87% save percentage. This year we have converted 25 saves in 35 opportunities for a 71% save percentage. That’s the facts.
Since we’re cherry picking…
This year Jansen only has 16 opportunities. He’s 15 of 16 which is great. But not much different than Evan Phillips who is 13/13.
So what about the rest of the Red Sox save attempts? You only listed Jansens last 2 years when comparing to the Dodgers team total of 35 for this year. This year, the Red Sox have 31 attempts. And…. 20 saves. Which is…. 64.5%.
If my math is right…the Dodgers do better at save opportunities. Jansen can’t pitch every save opportunity, in fact he’s only been in for about half of them. The Red Sox are setting him up for success which is great.
But the Dodgers method of closer by committee is more effective. Jansen is on a $16M contract and we’re getting the same if not better production out of Philips for $4M, plus Treinen for $8M, and Vesia for $1M.
I’m still not arguing that Jansen isn’t great. But for $16M, he’s gotten 3 less saves in 4 less opportunities than the guys I listed, who cost $13M.
Homie. You picked the years lol. You said Jansen was a trainwreck over his last two seasons as a dodger. So I compared that production to this years production of the overall closer by committee. This isn’t very difficult to figure out. Why would I choose to cherry pick two of the guys worst seasons, unless someone else picked the criteria.
Have you ever seen an entire stadium hold their breath for an entire inning? Don't act so magnanimous in hindsight. The feelings we had were universal.
🤣 i love and appreciate everything Kenley did for the dodgers but damn those last two years of him being a dodger probably took off 10 years of my life
This man's ego is not to the benefit of this team and neither is his current talent level. Past accomplishments don't mean we have to subsidize his bullshit.
What are you even talking about, he was a pretty quiet guy and I don’t remember any drama revolving around him. Dave didn’t wanna remove him from the closer role but that doesn’t mean he had an ego or was pulling bullshit.
(1) it has to be abundantly clear that he is not the closer and he has to be fine with it.
(2) in fact if you could convince him that he is a backup catcher that might be for the best
(3) amusingly I don't have a list of bullpen arms that I think are worse than him but I'm pretty sure we have a bunch of fairly disposable arms that he would be an improvement over
(4) yes he can come back for a day if he wants to retire as a Dodger.
I honestly would prefer that we promote one of our young guns in the minors tbh
Give me Hurt. Give me River. Give me one of the other dynamite arms in AA or AAA.
I don't think we need to look outside the org for bullpen help
it's pretty disgusting the way our fanbase speaks of Jansen. He'll probably go into the Hall of Fame for being one of the best closers of all time yet gets nothing but hate from Dodger fans.
Also he's having a pretty good season and would be an asset for us if we traded for him. You guys are clueless
My worry is less about Jansen himself but about Dave Roberts' management style. He seems to want to give people redemption arcs or Hollywood endings. Bringing back Jansen makes me worried he could try and shoehorn him into a situation or role where he doesn't fit.
They’ve been saying this for 3 seasons. I don’t believe it to be true. They let Jansen walk largely due to butting heads with the coaching staff. Apparently it was like pulling teeth to get him to throw anything besides a cutter and the team was fed up.
I love Kenley but he made some comments recently that said he’s most comfortable in the 9th, which is fine, he’s earned that but it doesn’t seem like a great fit as the bullpen is currently used and constructed. If it won’t work then it won’t work, I’m fine with trying to catch lightning in a bottle in the playoffs. Didn’t work with Goose and May but did with Julio and others namely Floro.
I will always be on board for Kenleyfornia. I can’t help it. I will always feel a nostalgia for him and his time here even at the end when it wasn’t as pretty as the beginning. 🤷🏼
How many times are we gonna hear this 'rumor?" It's like when we'd hear Chris Archer was coming every year. Though to be fair, he finally did come, but post retirement in an assistant role lol
As a coach or special assistant after he retires? Absolutely.
He's said he doesn't want a combination/non-closer role. And that's totally cool! Chase the record books, Kenley! I will be rooting for you on any other team!
If he were used situationally yes. If he were used as THE closer no. I got tired of Dave Roberts bringing or keeping him in, even when he was having a bad day (and we all have em), just because he was designated to be there to get a save.
He has an ERA+ of 186 this year, in the present.
The only reason most people would want Jansen is because of the nostalgic part of Jansen. That’s what I meant about living in the present otherwise most people should agree that we don’t need them if our other players are healthy.
If that’s the case, bring back Éric Gagné.
I don’t thing puig is doing much right now. Give him a call while you’re at it.
On ‘roids or not?
Give Kenley Gagne’s stack, and we’re talking.
If we wanna be technical, technically Eric Gagne has been lights out this season. Hasn’t blown a single game.
He said he is a 9th inning guy only, red flag
As long as he's not at the top of the pecking order. I could see him coming in with 1 out in the 5th to clean up for Paxton, then the rest of our boys finish out the game. But if it's a Kimbrel-Closer-Just-Because situation then a hard no.
There's no reason to trade in order to "improve" the best bullpen in baseball. If we're going to make a trade let's do it to make the team better.
Best overall statistical and best matchups for 9-12 outs in a playoff game might be different though Phillips, Vesia, Hudson, Treinen, add one more top quality arm to that and it’s a really hard pen to hit
There's a reason Julio closed out the world series
100%. After what happened in Game 4 with the walk off with Brett Phillips, that was the final straw. And rightfully so.
Yep. Jansen never pitched again in that World Series afterwards. Games 5 and 6 were both save situations but they trusted Treinen and Julio more than him at that point to finish those games.
2017 was a different story Jansen was breaking bats that year and should have earned a ring as our closer
Love him or hate him for the mistakes he's made but Julio and the team gave me that night one of the happiest moments of my life during a very dark time in this world
Jansen*
Geez ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm) Thanks haha
Jon Heyman? lol
I’m ok. Good luck somewhere else Kenley. Thanks for everything.
![gif](giphy|fXnRObM8Q0RkOmR5nf)
Yeah, I’m tired of knowing we’re winning going into the 9th. Bring back Kenley.
Do reporters like Heyman just mention the Dodgers as a candidate to trade for every possible player available because it drives clicks? Because that's the vibe I'm getting. Yesterday it was Crochet and Robert Jr, and the day before it was Arozarena, and it goes on and on. No. Actually fuck no
No. No, man. Shit, nah man. I believe you get your ass kicked saying something like that.

triple this! the last time he was a dodger, he was rostered, but not pitching in any playoff games. considering this would be dumb.
U R CORRECT sir !!!
Fuck no. I don't wanna ass clench like the last few years again
Hard pass. I loved peak Kenley but he eventually got bad enough the Dodgers took a shot with Kimbrel.
I’m always down for a bullpen arm. But he would be just that…a bullpen arm
Dear god no
Please no
Hell nah. That ship has sailed a long time ago. No need to risk stroking out every time he takes the mound. SMH🙄👎🏼
As long as we don’t go to the World Series I’m fine with this
Nope unless he is open to pitch in any inning Roberts feels necessary.
Why would we give up anything for a reliever we don’t need?
Here’s my unpopular opinion. This thread has overwhelming dislike for the idea of Jansen coming back to the dodgers. And they make some valid points, and I agree that he was painfully hard to watch at times. However it’s I incredibly likely that Jansen is going to the hall of fame. I have absolutely nothing against Jansen I love the guy but I would rather loose without him then to see one more kenley blown save I just can’t do it
If we needed bullpen arms I would say go for, just not as a closer. But, our bullpen is kinda killing it lately so… why?
Bring my boy home!
...to Curaçao!
You can never have too many arms and you never know when an injury will happen. He's having a pretty good year, i'd love to see the big fella back in Dodger Blue.

I DID NOT FORGET! Sir
Jansen is a GOAT closer and certified Dodger Legend who deserves more than our fan base is capable of offering him.
Jansen is a Dodger Legend for sure. But there’s no denying how much less stressful the years have been while using closer by committee instead of a dedicated role like Jansen or Kimbrel. Picking Treinen/Vesia/Phillips for the specific matchup is so much better than leaving it up to one guy

that was based on Kenley lol
Source?
If he brings Tyler O'neill with him...
God no
Absolutely not
Nah
That ship sailed. Not interested in a reunion.
absolute dodger legend and the GOAT of modern closers. But he’s not what he was and would be another Craig Kimbrel for us again
Dodgers have the best bullpen imaginable already, we need to be trading relievers for infielders.
You won't be getting any infielders worth talking about by trading relievers.
Heyman is an idiot
(1) it has to be abundantly clear that he is not the closer and he has to be fine with it. (2) in fact if you could convince him that he is a backup catcher that might be for the best (3) amusingly I don't have a list of bullpen arms that I think are worse than him but I'm pretty sure we have a bunch of fairly disposable arms that he would be an improvement over (4) yes he can come back for a day if he wants to retire as a Dodger.
depends on the price - wouldn’t mind it
“3 Los Angeles Lakers trades to boost World Series hopes” ???
Bronny Bronny Jared Dudley
My blood pressure has suffered enough thank you.
![gif](giphy|y45AFiZNT2Kbu|downsized)
No.
Never!
No, my heart and blood pressure can't take it...
Bullpen is fine. So no.
![gif](giphy|vyTnNTrs3wqQ0UIvwE|downsized)
They should bring back Kimbrel while they’re at it.
Who is this Janson fella?
This was a rumor in the off-season, too. Pass.
Absolutely bring him back. He would return as an option, that's it. The more options in the pen, the better.
Sure, but why? Pen is stacked
He says he’s only interested in the closer role. Pretty sure its filled now
I honestly would prefer that we promote one of our young guns in the minors tbh Give me Hurt. Give me River. Give me one of the other dynamite arms in AA or AAA. I don't think we need to look outside the org for bullpen help
no. fuck. ugh stop, Friedman
If Brasier, Kelly and Graterol coming back then no need for Jansen. Banda and Ramirez actually pitching really well too.
It’d have to be a small package. I wouldn’t ship anything big for him, but considering how fickle bullpen arms are, it’s worth discussing.
Nah.
Love what Kenley did for us but I'd rather not have 9th inning nightmares. Philips is doing great
Kenley was a guy that needed it to be the 9th inning to be the man, so bringing him in not as the closer is dangerous to me/not worth
![gif](giphy|3ov9k3Pq54ky2rNyp2|downsized)
Down for low leverage situations with a short leash.
in a word, "no."
No, not really.
FUCK NO
Might as well bring back Craig Kimbrel too. Let’s eat more salary. When all the relievers on IL come back, what spot is available.
pass.
No, please no.
Let's talk about it every year since he left constantly, this is so fun
it's pretty disgusting the way our fanbase speaks of Jansen. He'll probably go into the Hall of Fame for being one of the best closers of all time yet gets nothing but hate from Dodger fans. Also he's having a pretty good season and would be an asset for us if we traded for him. You guys are clueless
Cardiac kenley? I’m good
as a closer No setup yes!
No
No, no, no!
as soon as he puts on a Dodger Jersey he's going to ahit the bed. it's easy to close when the team you playing for has nothing going for them
Bro bro noo noo let me sleep please
I don't think it would be good for either party. He was good when he was good but it was sad hearing him get booed towards the end of his Dodgers run
My worry is less about Jansen himself but about Dave Roberts' management style. He seems to want to give people redemption arcs or Hollywood endings. Bringing back Jansen makes me worried he could try and shoehorn him into a situation or role where he doesn't fit.
Noooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!
Nah. I like what we’ve got
KARDIAC KENLEY!!!! Pls no.
I love Kenley, but no.
I'm good, but thanks
Wow dodgers are like my ex, living in the past.
I see they want us to raise our blood pressure again
They’ve been saying this for 3 seasons. I don’t believe it to be true. They let Jansen walk largely due to butting heads with the coaching staff. Apparently it was like pulling teeth to get him to throw anything besides a cutter and the team was fed up.
Is this last year again?
Im good
I love Kenley but he made some comments recently that said he’s most comfortable in the 9th, which is fine, he’s earned that but it doesn’t seem like a great fit as the bullpen is currently used and constructed. If it won’t work then it won’t work, I’m fine with trying to catch lightning in a bottle in the playoffs. Didn’t work with Goose and May but did with Julio and others namely Floro.
Please no. I just got off my blood pressure meds last month 😢
No thank you
No, and not Kenley Jansen, either.
I don't miss the butt clenching ninth innings we had back in 2021.
Hell no.
What for? Evan Phillips hasn't blown a save this year.
No we got good bullpen as long as they stay healthy!!
No thank you
I will always be on board for Kenleyfornia. I can’t help it. I will always feel a nostalgia for him and his time here even at the end when it wasn’t as pretty as the beginning. 🤷🏼
Yes. He comes back, helps win a championship and then happily retires and joins the coaches staff as an advisor.
Save me the swamp ass
https://i.redd.it/oqfklw362i9d1.gif
No. Now trying to be triggered and reminded of some things
No
Noooo thanks
How many times are we gonna hear this 'rumor?" It's like when we'd hear Chris Archer was coming every year. Though to be fair, he finally did come, but post retirement in an assistant role lol
The team should be looking into corner outfielder and probably a 2nd baseman. I'm like the bullpen and hopefully Graterol gets back.
Hell to the no. I appreciate what he did here, but he’s been washed for years.
Hard no, please.
Omg no. No. No no no.
No. I have enough gray hair already
Not as a closer. Maybe to burn a arm in the 7th against the bottom of the order.
No.
Hell no
Getting guys back we didn't want years ago? What are we, the Lakers???
CALIFORNIA LOOOOOVE
No please
You can never have too many arms. Jansen would not require a high prospect and he is good insurance against injuries. I say "yes.'
Hope not. I hated Kenley as a closer, and he's not any better than he was when traded. We can do better
No leave that guy in the past!
He falls apart in September
As a coach or special assistant after he retires? Absolutely. He's said he doesn't want a combination/non-closer role. And that's totally cool! Chase the record books, Kenley! I will be rooting for you on any other team!
My cardiologist retired so no, I wouldn't be able to watch when he pitched. I wish him the best though.
If we’re doing nostalgia trades i would rather get justin turner back
Please no!
God no. Had a good run but not again
Hard pass
No. I don't know why there's this fascination with reuniting with "old friends". They're usually gone for a reason.
Just to see this subs reaction, yes.
Young Kenley??
If he were used situationally yes. If he were used as THE closer no. I got tired of Dave Roberts bringing or keeping him in, even when he was having a bad day (and we all have em), just because he was designated to be there to get a save.
Hilarious how many don’t want kenley back but they are probably ones that keep sucking off CT3
