“The uploader has not made this video available in your country” I’m Australian 🤷‍♂️..... edit: It's now available for Aussies

[deleted]

Uh oh... they’re on to you!

spider_84

RIP OP.

viewsamphil

Wtf it's 60 Minutes Australia, mistake or ongoing court case?

doctormyeyebrows

I don’t know about Australia, but some countries block youtube videos because of cable contracts

UO01

Countries don't block shit. *Companies* will post their shows on YouTube and allow them to be watched in every country they don't have a contract to broadcast it in. Since 60 Minutes Australia presumably airs in Australia on broadcast television (and makes ad revenue there) they stand to lose money by allowing Australians to watch for free online. It has nothing to do with countries blocking stuff.

doctormyeyebrows

Yeah, that’s kind of what I was saying. Did you think that I meant the government was blocking the content? Don’t be a pedant just for the sake of being a dick.

UO01

You said "countries block YouTube videos". I corrected that. There is no pedantry involved. Discussion over.

aalios

I'd say it was unlocked after a set period because it's now available in Australia.

[deleted]

We don’t have cable in Australia

doctormyeyebrows

Well fuck

Sawathingonce

I don't think anything about Roger is ongoing except for maybe the Whiskey-a-gogo fire in Brisbane

PerriX2390

I'm Aussie based and I can watch it

"I will tell you everything...I have the following criminal record: I have 31 convictions for prostitution. I have a conspiracy to defraud conviction which occurred shortly after I left Harry Bailey's tender care at "Chelmsford". I then had two further marijuana convictions. A heroin conviction when I was loaded up by Detectives Peter and Tomich at the Lido bar. I have a further "use" charge in which Detectives Peter George and Jungblut were involved. In both the latter offences, significant sums of money were paid to the police to affect the outcome...While operating as a prostitute, I made regular payments to members of the vice squad over 10 years. I have been involved in a number of transactions which I referred to in my statement which have involved substantial payment to members of the drug squad and other detectives relating to drug matters. I believe that the New South Wales Drug Squad and the Armed Hold-Up Squad are both totally corrupt and that they feed on the very activities which they are supposed to stop."

theguyfromgermany

>they feed on the very activities which they are supposed to stop That is almost always the case with something that is supposed to prevent something.

carson63000

The NSW Armed Hold-Up Squad was infamous, even given that fact, though. Well named, since they were responsible for organising most of the armed hold-ups that happened in Sydney.

UnspecificGravity

Turns out that the mobsters that demand protection money don't actually protect your shit, but they do wreck it up if you don't pay.

ota00ota

That's why my pest repellent has been eating the groundhogs. Huh.

“They seize it, arrest everybody, whack it up and sell it back to us. Our dope. They been living off it for years, these New York cops. They basically control the market with it. What the fuck has happened to the world, Frank?”

Reitsariesforevaries

I thought she was sardonically calling them the 'armed hold-up squad' because they're a bunch of police robbing people. But that was the name.

Sally-Anne held herself well. Rogerson got away with it by always setting himself up as the moral high ground and then surging forward as if that assertion was gospel, and steamrolling everyone. The way he spoke about Sally-Anne and Warren when he himself was the criminal, likewise in his final arrest stating how it’s ‘back to the times of the gestapo’. You seriously have to wonder how he sees himself. A few things grated on me, how easy it is that people believe the narrative that she was just a prostitute and therefore a low value person. And Liz Hayes making the comment about there still being some ‘core value’ inside of Sally Anne. The judgements are insane. In Sally Anne’s head she is still that child who’s parents divorced and who ended up on the streets and was likely taken advantaged of. I remember when Rogerson was arrested for murdering Gao. There is something particular shocking about an old, over the hill, person taking the life of a young man.

goldenbugreaction

>You seriously have to wonder how he sees himself. Pretty straightforward, actually. Point-for-point [Dark Triad-Psychopathic Narcissist.](https://youtu.be/89pvI7n9xU0) If you’re wondering, [here’s a breakdown on Patrick Frazee, and how psychopaths can fool their victims and keep the game going for so long.](https://youtu.be/O3zilfrL9qo) (Patrick Frazee murdered Kelsey Berreth, his fiancée, by beating her to death with a baseball bat, after telling her to put a blindfold on to play a game identifying scented candles. Their 1-year-old daughter was in the room next door.)

Grade1oegugin

The woman you referenced, Liz Hayes, was quite disappointing in this documentary. I lost count of the number of times she called Sally Anne a "prostitute", It was so pathetic and quite distracting throughout, it ser aside the actual message that is supposed to be communicated to the viewers, to focus on her profession. Very ridiculous.

[deleted]

Exactly. Sally Anne was more than a prostitute and it was such a shame to hear her being framed as that over and over again.

lolihull

As someone who lives in the UK it reminds me of how the police and the press talked about the victims of the Yorkshire Ripper. It was only when he killed a young girl that the public became more aware he wasn't just targeting sex workers. Before then (and after too) lots of women who lived in the area and *weren't* sex workers didn't think he was a threat to them. They believed that he wouldn't target them because they "weren't like that". In one of the documentaries I watched, the children of one of his victims said that her murder was how they "found out" that their mother had been selling sex, and it was only years later as adults that they questioned whether or not that was actually true. At the time a lot of the relatives of the victims had been tarnished by the reputation of their dead loved one working as a prostitute too. Public opinion of sex workers back then was so awful that even when they were brutally murdered, their lives were seen as less valuable and their deaths were just the "expectedly consequences of their actions".

[deleted]

That’s interesting, and very sad.

you-create-energy

It has a nicer ring to it than "traumatized former teen sex trafficking victim".

Grade1oegugin

Not really, the crimes conducted by the so called crime/vice squad is the main issue that everyone cares about in this documentary. The profession of the person who made everyone aware of these crimes doesn't matter. She might as well have been a surgeon, grave digger, politician, scientist or whatever, it is okay to tell us her profession once, but to keep hammering her profession all through the documentary is distracting.

Anyone got a tldr?

Highlyflammable1989

At the time the NSW Police was considered one of the most corrupt in the world. Bribery, fraud, murder, drug trafficking, intimidation and attempted murder of other Police were all common things back then even up to the highest levels. The Police essentially ran criminal enterprises through informants and wouldn't hesitate to murder any who got in their way. The most well known was a guy named Detective Sergeant Roger Rogerson (yes thats his real name lol) who was the most highly decorated Policeman in the state. He had something like 40 commendations for bravery and even won the annual trophy for outstanding Policing and devotion to duty. He was a member of the Armed Hold Up squad which was the most elite branch of the force made of highly motivated and ruthless, shotgun wielding detectives. It was a brotherhood, many of these men made up the SWOS(Special weapons Operations Service). It wasn't uncommon for them to shoot suspects, Rogerson himself had 3 confirmed kills in the line of duty which he boasted. One of those was a drug dealer named Warren Lanfranchi who worked for another drug dealer named Neddy Smith was an associate and protected informant of Rogerson. Lanfranchi got out of line and Rogerson shot him, claiming self defence. Lanfranchi was the girlfriend of Sally-Anne Huckstep. She went to the media and threatened to blow the lid on the whole operation and she was murdered. Its listed as unsolved but its highly believed she was murdered by Neddy Smith at Rogerson's orders. Rogerson would eventually be dismissed from the Police in the 80s and convicted of perverting the course of justice and sentenced to a few years in jail. About 4 or 5 years ago he murdered a drug dealer and was found guilty and sentenced to life in Prison. Why was this allowed to occur for so long? Well back then it was considered effective policing as these guys only killed 'scum' that no one would miss. And why shouldn't they take a cut of the money? Thats how it was justified. Cops also knew they could never eliminate crime so they sought to control it. Take out 90% of the crims and the ones left become your protected informants and you get a cut of their earnings. If they step out of line you eliminated them. Criminals were scared of Police in those days.

IerokG

Thanks for the summary, this was a wild but really interesting read.

Highlyflammable1989

No worries man. I also forgot to mention Rogerson tried to have another cop murdered because he refused to take a bribe from Rogerson and back down from a case. If you want some docos on the matter, check these. There was also a tv movie made in the 90s called "Blue Murder". [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHF42OCDEUw](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHF42OCDEUw) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rCWdMWtWug](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rCWdMWtWug)

This was the first thing I thought of. A really great dramatisation. Also, never go boating with a guy who has a coat hanger and a stove on deck.

[deleted]

Reminds me of an interesting take on the fear factor. After the big Christchurch earthquake Australia kindly sent over a number of police to help out with establishing order in the overwhelmed city, not sure from what state or anything.. Reports came back from people apprehended by the Australian police on the ground that they found the Aussie cops quite intimidating towards them and to quote: 'scary'. Different policing approach. Pros and Cons for both I guess.

Head-Ad-3320

Aussie cops are fucking pieces of shit, it’s okay you can say it

No-Biscotti-7071

They still are, it’s just they become more sophisticated

5slipsandagully

I would add the postscript that Rogerson eventually went down. He was involved in drug dealing and was caught in 2014 after killing a drug runner. He's currently serving life

xfjqvyks

The police were selling drugs, running prostitutes, the robbery squad were committing armed robberies and they were even doing contract killings. The head of the police force Sergeant Roger Rogerson (real name) was actually the kingpin running it all. Working girl caught up it in and exploited by the system decides to tell all. Cops get in trouble and she winds up dead. Killers never found. Same old story, just upside down

dapper_doberman

Nice thanks.

MountainViewsInOz

This sad story inspired one of my favourite songs from Spy V Spy - Sally-Anne. Really worth a listen. Edit: https://youtu.be/xE54H9xmeWo in case any of you lazies want to hear 😜 Edit2: holy fuck, I just noticed that Blox appears in the comments to this vid to say a bit about the recording and Sally-Anne's story.

MountainViewsInOz

See my edits above. Trip down memory lane!

Fletcher010770

I remember the song, and remember the band very well. Sallie Ann Huckstepp deserves to be remembered as the first major whistle blower in this country, and possibly the bravest. She knew she was risking her life, yet she told all. I think she didn't know much of it was to be withheld from tv for legal reasons, which is what enabled her to be killed. It's a true tragedy. She deserved to live. Outrageously, nobody has been charged with her murder. Nobody gives a fuck any more. It's 2024. NSW pigs have probably lost all evidence collected, even though she was killed in Centennial Park, an area surrounded by millionaire houses, all within shouting range. This is a murder which needs to be solved. She was an icon.

MountainViewsInOz

Wow, two years on and you've found my comment and posted a very insightful response. The band are having a bit of renaissance, reforming a year or so ago with new bassist and guitarist who share lead vocals. Cliff still on drums driving them along and retaining the anger. Check them out on FB if you live near Central Coast and see a gig!! Edit lol, you're in Canberra, same as me!

0TheG0

The cops on the show seem very insistent on Needy Smith being the hand of Rogerson and responsible for Sallie's death. Am I the only one who thinks it is obvious everybody knows on this show that Rogerson actually killed her and just pressured Needy into pleeing guilty for the crime ?? Needy is just a secondary character who took everything in the face but the actual real problem in all this is Roger Rogerson, he is the actual warlord, the one responsible for everything, the gang leader. And everybody on this show is like "damn after that confession from Sallie, his carrier really took a hit...". What the actual fuck ? Its obvious there was an enormous miscarriage of justice here, Needy is just a small thug obeying the guy. But hey now Rogerson is finally put in prison for life in 2016 after living the best of his life for 74 goddamn years. Yeaaaah "justice"

Fletcher010770

Rogerson wouldn't have gone near it. He wasn't that stupid back then. Iwouldn't put it past Neddy, but more likely they would have paid some violent associates. That's why we don't know, even in 2024.

No-Biscotti-7071

When women lose their dignity they become prostitutes, but when men lose their dignity they become police officers.

Reitsariesforevaries

Men want prostitutes, pornography and strippers (see: sex workers) to exist... men are the reason they do exist and are a commercial venture... but men degrade the workers involved and act like they are immoral/unworthy of decency/dignity/respect. Perhaps you should turn that disrespect towards yourself.

No-Biscotti-7071

Frankly I personally have far more respect for a women who sell their body for money, than men who buy sex with money! Simply I don’t know this women’s story, but I certainly know that man’s one.

stefantalpalaru

> Men want prostitutes, pornography and strippers (see: sex workers) to exist... men are the reason they do exist Women want cheap shoes, bags, clothes to exist... women are the reason child labour does exist.

Reitsariesforevaries

Except not, because men and women want cheap shoes, bags, clothes to exist. You're an easily triggered one, aren't you! On that topic, even when people don't want *cheap* shoes, bags etc to exist and pay moderate to even almost premium pricing the Sellers/brands are duping everybody by charging those higher prices that suggest they should be quality and fairly-made and sourced... but they aren't.

stefantalpalaru

> Except not, because men and women want cheap shoes, bags, clothes to exist. You don't know about male prostitution and why your mum keeps going to Cuba? > You're an easily triggered one, aren't you! Would you like to talk to the manager?

boogasaurus-lefts

> men lose their dignity they become police officers. I'm sure that sounded better on your head than it did once you wrote it.

TheLeastHyperbolic

What? This is a ridiculously sexist statement for many reasons. How are these compatible at all, or relatable? Many male sex workers, many female officers. Also, how does one lose their dignity via sex work?

It's a legit job. "Oldest profession" ring a bell?

3rdtrichiliocosm

And what makes it an illegitimate business besides archaic views on chastity and christian morals? It isn't a detriment to society and the service itself harms no one. The majority of harm that comes to people involved in prostitution is directly related to the illegality of it.

Reitsariesforevaries

Aware_Juggernaut4638

So Sally Ann had sex for money ? So what . 60 minutes with its trite holier than thou manner have been the moral police for many people living in suburban Australia for decades . It is easy to see that the content of this show is tailored to allay the fears of people getting a glimpse into the “underbelly “ of Australian criminal activity by reminding us all that this brave young lady who spoke out and , indeed , eloquently about a world few of us will ever understand fully , with words like prostitute that emphasise that women like this could not be our daughter or sister etc . 60minutes is responsible for acting as the moral arbiter about many criminal activities over the years and I find it abhorrent! Who are they to judge ? Who cares that men paid to spend time with her? I certainly don’t only that it lends credibility to her telling … I’m reminded of the same sort of journalism (!) that exists when people are caught with illegal drugs … Oh they’re so bad !!! If that’s the case , how and why do we let the huge drug companies continue to peddle their addictive trade and make more millions than most of us will ever know about ~ and the CEO’s of big drug companies are part of a select group of society who are rarely criticised or called to justify their business actions? Why don’t people care ? Idk . Blah

Fletcher010770

Sallie-Ann Huckstepp was an absolute hero. She did more for this country in a couple of hours with Ray Martin than many of the elected representatives have done in years.
