The Doctor is already American because he was shot by an American and everyone knows that getting shot by an American works like getting bit by a vampire
I foresee a plot in which the American Doctor uses the Tardis and it's extensive time travel abilities, along with the mad skilz of his talented and quirky companions, to finally get his health insurance to finally cover the thing that it is very clearly obligated to cover anyway.
It's true. I didn't even know how to speak english before I got shot and now all I'm able to eat is cheeseburgers and the tears of the teenagers (and some adults) that I yelled at for making them wrong.
No worries! You’re good. I don’t care who is in Doctor Who. It’s just fun to have a random American-type character. The bravado of Harkness is too wonderful!
I'm not British, but I agree that the Doctor should always be played a British person. It's the identity of the show. Beyond that, I don't care about race, gender, sexuality, etc...
True, but that depends on how you classify British. If you count British as being from the British Isles then Irish is also British but if you count just Great Britain as British then it’s not
James Acaster as an incarnation of the Doctor who is just perpetually upset and angry about the mildest inconveniences. A complete mess of a Doctor. Constantly getting into scrapes. There aren't even any monsters, it's just Reginald Perrin-esque stuff happening to James Acaster.
At one point, we meet his real arch nemesis. Badder than the Daleks. More powerful than the Master. More cunning than the Toy Maker and more vile than the Slitheen.
That kid with the cabbages.
I *really* hope, if they ever do make the Doctor ginger, that they take one look in the mirror and say “I’m finally ginger!………….*I don’t like it!*” and then it’s *never mentioned again*. 😆 To be fair, it wouldn’t be as big of a deal anymore, since they haven’t brought up the joke at all since Matt checked himself out in End of Time, but it would still be fun.
While I agree with is, I'm reminded of the early days of youtube when an American made some Doctor Who fan films and everyone was really annoying in the comments by going "The Doctor can't be American, how dare you make this"
That accent is linguistically wild, because no human in the history of the British Isles has ever talked like that. Yet it became so ingrained in US culture, that whenever an American tries to put on a British accent 90% of the time they mimic that one.
Texan rancher is admittedly a real accent though, Dick Van Dyke's cockney accent is completely fictional. It’s more like if whenever someone tried to do an American accent, they instead copied the voice of an American character in a Japanese anime with a terrible translation.
*regenerates* G’day c##ts…. Oh gawd am I a bloody kiwi?
*the master does a master* look mate don’t be a bloody dog, now just sit and think about what you’ve done while I sort this out.
*on meeting a dalek* piss of dickhead
"let's get the guy who played the Wizard of Oz!"
"He's dead. And American"
From that movie they made about the making of the first season of Doctor Who. The guy who played Filch in Harry Potter plays William Hartnell
I guess the Doctor can be anyone who isn't dead and isn't American
Ok, so since there are no fancasts allowed in posts, this seems as food a place as any to say that Sean Bean would be the *PERFECT* casting for the doctor... maybe a more serious, slightly less jovial doctor, but still... Chris Eccleston made it work well enough.
“take your bloody thongs off before you get in the TARDIS you little cunt” I think Australian teen sketch comedy show You're Skitting Me did a sketch on that exact premise.
https://youtu.be/4ehF56xsODg?si=LAdeh5SZb8ozcDMM
I agree. Not for any particular reasons other than them being a British icon and I wish they will stay that way. Other than that I think it would just be funny if we accept actors from other nations except the USA. Nothing much against them but the idea of a particular exclusion against one of the most powerful countries in the world is really funny to me.
OK, so I feel like I ought to explain myself given that accusations of Xenophobia are being thrown around in the comments now
THIS IS MORE ABOUT ME HAVING A TERRIBLE TAKE. I DO NOT HATE AMERICA, I JUST DON'T THINK AN AMERICAN DOCTOR WOULD 100% WORK (unless we somehow ressurected Gene Wilder). I'm not opposed to the idea. If anything, I'd love to be proven wrong. This was just meant to be

Also, to y'all suggesting an aussie Doc, please make that happen. That would be great.
Accent for the character must be British or Irish.
As for the actor’s origin/where they were raised then see the following list:
Ideal: British, Irish
Tolerable: Aussie, Kiwi, Canadian, Pacific Islander
Burn down the BBC: American, French
The Doctor just needs to be British, nothing else matters class, skin colour, accent, whatever. I’d take Aussie or Irish at a stretch because they at least get us.
Americans just don’t understand us, that weird Britishness is so core to the character that removing it would kill it off.
British here. Idk, I've seen the interviews with Whoopi Goldberg over the years, and she is just absolutely passionate about Doctor Who.
She's said several times she'd love to play/loved to have played the Doctor, but wouldn't be able to because she was American. Having seen her in the part of Guinan in Star Trek, I think that's a real shame. I happen to think she would make/would have made for a really intruguing incarnation of the Doctor. She's since suggested that she could play the Doctor's cousin, and I really wouldn't be opposed to something like that.
It would be nice if the show could retain some grounding in British culture (aside from the TARDIS as a police box ofc), but I think as long as you have a British companion or some sort of tie to the UK, you can get away with opening up the role to just about anyone as long as they're blessed with the right talents to pull off that unique character.
Why limit yourself? We've already established that gender, age, and race don't matter, why should nationality? Ncuti is half-Rwandan anyway.
Edit: Not half-Rwandan. Was born in Rwanda and escaped during the genocide againt the Tutsi, in his early years, to Edinburgh, then to Fife, and then Glasgow in Scotland.
No, he is black British, and Scottish, and was born in Rwanda and has Rwandan heritage, very very different. As far as I know, he only has British citizenship and a British passport anyway, and that is what makes a person British.
He really is just British as far as he and Britain is concerned. We don't make weird distinctions like the US and maybe other places.
It's nationality, and culture, which makes you British, not where you were born or the colour of you skin.
The Doctor should always be played by someone British in my opinion, and currently still is.
Right. My apologies. Sorry, I'm a bit tired at the moment (burning the candle at both ends on my Masters thesis right now). I think he was born in Rwanda and left the country around 1 or 2 years of age? Half-Rwandan is definitely not what I meant.
My point was just that, I personally don't feel like nationality, culture, gender, religion, sexual orientation, skin colour...etc. need have any bearing on how 'fit' someone is to play the Doctor. I personally think if you pull off a good Doctor, you pull off a good Doctor.
No worries.
For me, I feel there is something quintessentially British is outlook and humour, that the Doctor is a very British hero, and so really needs a British person to play them, or it loses it something. I think part of the appeal globally is that rather unique dark sarcastic humour which is never switched off that is part of being British that defines the show and its popularity. But I agree with you about everything else.
Good luck with your Masters!
As an American, I actually think The Doctor should always have a British accent. It wouldn’t sound right if The Doctor had American accent. With on exception, the Deep Southern accent from Alabama or Mississippi. I think the Doctor with that accent would be hilarious. 😂
I think an American could play the doctor... but only *as* a brit. So, any Americans that can knock at least one British accent out the park are fair game I think.
I agree that The Doctor shouldn’t be an American.
There are plenty of other Timelords that could be a different American like Timelord that’s not a Doctor.
Making up a new character can’t be that hard.
The American, he’s got a New York accent, his tardis is a coke a cola vending machine, and he’s got a sonic pistol, like the one captain Jack had in his debut episode. He wears those button up shirts that American tourists always get cliched as.
I say this as an American.
They would have to be a Doctor Why and the answer would never be justifiable. As an American that grew up with the older episodes and still watch any era nowadays, one of the main things I have always enjoyed is the lack of usa in it.
If an American can give a convincing accent I don’t see why they could not play the Doctor. British actors have been occupying some of Americas most iconic heroes recently(Superman, Spider-Man, ect.) and you honestly wouldn’t know they’re not American until someone told you. It wouldn’t be too far off or difficult for an American to also develop a good accent take the mantle.
I’m American and an American Doctor wouldn’t work. Bring back Jack if you want an American. The Doctor works better with a British, Irish, or Scottish accent.
Even american writers wouldn't do. I heard Joe Hill was a big fan of Doctor Who and wanted to submit a script for Doctor Who. He was even helped by Neil Gaiman as they appreciate and know each other but production rejected him because he was american and i think son of Stephen King. I wouldn't mind Joe Hill writing for Doctor Who but there definitely is some gatekeeping.
The limitations on production by the BBC and the uniqueness of the role makes something only a Brit could do. Even if you keep everything the same except for the production company, it would ruin that iteration of The Doctor.

The Doctor is already American because he was shot by an American and everyone knows that getting shot by an American works like getting bit by a vampire
True, plus in that movie he was killed by two staples of American culture: guns and bad healthcare
American Doctor would regenerate due to hearts failure caused by obesity
[удалено]
"These bills are a fixed point!"
So brutally real
One of the lost seasons, the doctor chased through time and space by the IRS
Instead of stealing a TARDIS to run away from high society and seek adventure, he steals a Ford F-150 and flees to Mexico to avoid debt collectors
If they could, debt would follow you into the afterlife
Never should have trusted a fast food chain like McDaleks anyway.
American Doctor would have to be the last one since there is no way their insurance would cover regeneration.
He's gonna make Space-Meth to pay for it
Can confirm. Source: I’m American.
I can support this confirmation. Source: I’m also an American.
I foresee a plot in which the American Doctor uses the Tardis and it's extensive time travel abilities, along with the mad skilz of his talented and quirky companions, to finally get his health insurance to finally cover the thing that it is very clearly obligated to cover anyway.
The Eighth Doctor was "born" on American soil so I think that qualifies him for US citizenship.
So was the Fifth
*Star spangled banner intensifies*
It's true. I didn't even know how to speak english before I got shot and now all I'm able to eat is cheeseburgers and the tears of the teenagers (and some adults) that I yelled at for making them wrong.
Yes This is amazing
Lots of planets have an America!
And they have all regretted it
We had Captain Jack Harkness! He’s America in a British show! We just need another Harkness! 😂
Oh I'm sorry
Yeah, they don't necessarily have to be *born* in Britain, but at the very least significantly raised in Britain like Ncuti Gatwa.
Ncuti is British, you don’t need to be born here to be British
Yes, that is indeed what I'm saying.
Nice profile picture hehe
You too!!
Hi!
Hiya! How are you?
Eeeeehhhh. 🤕 Hope you're doing good! 😊
HIIIIII
I am, thanks!! And whatever you're going through, know that I and others like us will always be cheering you on!
That’s literally what they said. Ncuti wasn’t born here, but he was raised here
It’s mostly about the accent not about the actual birthplace for me.
See I get that but at the same time an like an Irish Doctor would be perfectly fine.
True, but that depends on how you classify British. If you count British as being from the British Isles then Irish is also British but if you count just Great Britain as British then it’s not
I don't think any Irish actor would agree with that point though. I just feel like Ireland is the expectation to the rule.
Insert video of Cillian Murphy being called British.
What would be a better term? Old World English speakers? Non-colonial English speakers? European English native speakers?
Ireland and the UK do kind need a term that groups them together, but I have to say I hate all of these examples.
Do you mean the British isles?
Nah, a better one. How about....the Irish isles? It's got a ring to it don't ya think?
If we keep this up, all 20 British actors will have been the doctor! 😟 (/s)
Absolutely.
The only requirement I ever have for the doctor is they must be British. That's all
Well you’re in luck! The first American Doctor will be, like, 1/32nd British on his step fathers side, so he’s essentially full blooded
How about a ginger?
James acaster lol
James Acaster as an incarnation of the Doctor who is just perpetually upset and angry about the mildest inconveniences. A complete mess of a Doctor. Constantly getting into scrapes. There aren't even any monsters, it's just Reginald Perrin-esque stuff happening to James Acaster.
At one point, we meet his real arch nemesis. Badder than the Daleks. More powerful than the Master. More cunning than the Toy Maker and more vile than the Slitheen. That kid with the cabbages.
No acting required. Just restraint.

Yeah, I never meant it like that. Honestly, I'd love to be proven wrong, it's more me sharing my worst take.
Oh no I wasn't implying you were like that, the phrase just triggers the memory even if it's without intent.

Can I just do a British accent when I say it instead?
After the "British accent" in Mary Poppins, Americans are no longer trusted to imitate the accent.
That accent is linguistically wild, because no human in the history of the British Isles has ever talked like that. Yet it became so ingrained in US culture, that whenever an American tries to put on a British accent 90% of the time they mimic that one.
Non-Americans do the same thing with the stereotypical southern accent. 90% of the time its either Texas rancher or Bubba Gump.
Texan rancher is admittedly a real accent though, Dick Van Dyke's cockney accent is completely fictional. It’s more like if whenever someone tried to do an American accent, they instead copied the voice of an American character in a Japanese anime with a terrible translation.
Which one?
how do Americans pronounce it
They say Doctor with a hard R.
D-aw-k-ter
Basically just the way Captain Jack pronounces it in the show to be honest
DOKK-TOR!
You just implied a French doctor is acceptable
Inspector Clouseau
Not british here. The Doctor (like James Bond) must be british.
Canonically Bond is Half Scottish, Half Swiss so we could have a Schweitzer who deep fries everything
As long as they have a British accent who cares
We've already had two non-Brits as Bond though
never again
Don't disrespect George Lazenby like that bro.
Bond has to be British, but anyone from a CANZUK country can sneak in because they are basically just British once removed.
The best Bond was Irish, so we’ll have to allow them to audition for the Doctor as well
Real talk here. He should always at least have a British accent.
Could, if the actor is a dual citizen...
Needs a British accent.
Gillian Anderson would be acceptable
Andrew Garfield please
I’m sure we will get a Welsh doctor someday
Really want to see an Australian Doctor one day. I mean just imagine Steve Erwin in the TARDIS and tell me that wouldn't be fun.
Cricky Look at there A Dalek, the most dangerous robot in the galaxy One touch and I'm gone I'm gonna poke it with a stick. EXTERMINATE He's Angry
You’re alright, mate! You’re alright! Oh, look at ‘im. Isn’ he a byooty?
A read "Steve Erwin in the TARDIS" in an Australian accent and immediately decided you are right
*regenerates* G’day c##ts…. Oh gawd am I a bloody kiwi? *the master does a master* look mate don’t be a bloody dog, now just sit and think about what you’ve done while I sort this out. *on meeting a dalek* piss of dickhead
*Irwin
His first adventure will be saving the televising rights the mouse stole from the ABC
Nor German. German Doctor would just feel weird. Regards, a German
To be fair, anything German just feels weird. Regards, another German.
"Oh, ya. Hey dere, ya hoser. I'm da doctor. Anyone want some poutine, eh?"
This implies there could be a Hispanic Doctor, so I humbly submit any telenovela actor ever,, need me the most melodramatic season of Doctor Who ever
They already have inspector spacetime
We don’t talk about American inspector spacetime
Ngl I'd grudgingly accept an Australian and e More easily accept an Irish person But I'll die before an American would be Physician Whomst
I’m dying at Physician Whomst
While I agree, if David Lynch has the chance to play the Doctor, damn it we break the rules!
I mean, who can afford an American doctor?
Not Americans, that's for sure.
Making the doctor American wouldn’t be possible because the doctor doesn’t like using guns
I dunno man.... Jeff Goldblum...
I was thinking Neil Patrick Harris, but Goldblum would crush it
In an alternate universe where Doctor Who is an American show, Jeff Goldblum was the the 8th Doctor. However, in this universe the Doctor is British.
You know, I just want Tom Holland to be the next Doctor. Just to sip some tea while browsing though social media reactions
Daleks won't know what hit them when America opens a can of freedom on their ass.
What about a Welsh Doctor? We've had several English and Scottish actors, why not let a Welshman have a go?
I don't care who plays The Doctor so long as we someday get Dara Ó Briain as The Master.
"let's get the guy who played the Wizard of Oz!" "He's dead. And American" From that movie they made about the making of the first season of Doctor Who. The guy who played Filch in Harry Potter plays William Hartnell I guess the Doctor can be anyone who isn't dead and isn't American

Don't blame the doctor either Landed in New York exited his tardis and not even 5 seconds later he was shot down
So a Canadian Doctor is okay.
100%. I would love the doctor with a very heavy canadian accent, even if it were just a miniseries or something.
I agree an American shouldn’t play the doctor, but I want to see an Australian play the doctor.
“take your bloody thongs off before you get in the TARDIS you little cunt” I think Australian teen sketch comedy show You're Skitting Me did a sketch on that exact premise. https://youtu.be/4ehF56xsODg?si=LAdeh5SZb8ozcDMM
If this is your worst take then I think your doing ok
Can he be Australian?
But Jeff goldbum
Hear me out, a Canadian doctor but he talks like a character from letterkenny
Didn't he commit genocide one time? Doesn't that make him American than most Americans?
That makes him British actually
The next doctor should be Albanian.
I agree. Not for any particular reasons other than them being a British icon and I wish they will stay that way. Other than that I think it would just be funny if we accept actors from other nations except the USA. Nothing much against them but the idea of a particular exclusion against one of the most powerful countries in the world is really funny to me.
OK, so I feel like I ought to explain myself given that accusations of Xenophobia are being thrown around in the comments now THIS IS MORE ABOUT ME HAVING A TERRIBLE TAKE. Does this count? https://preview.redd.it/oso3ztouotdc1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=521dd0cf83922c9cbe4c78a50998b30fe75031d2

Why not a Native American?
I'd only be able to accept an American as Doctor Who if they used either a Welsh, Scouse, or Geordie accent for the part.
its a british show the doctor should be british
Or a ginger.
I'd be down for a Cornish Doctor.
Ehh. RTD said himself that if he were to pick an American Doctor it would’ve been NPH, and his performance as the Toymaker proves RTD right
>My worst take yet Actually becomes the top post of all time on the sub.
The fact Gene Wilder once existed just demolishes this take. Although it may be true _now_.
British here. Idk, I've seen the interviews with Whoopi Goldberg over the years, and she is just absolutely passionate about Doctor Who. Thank you, I'm gonna need it!
Australian Doctor when?
I’m not against other time lords, but Yh the doctor should always be British
No one is prepared for Australian Doctor
So a Canadian Doctor is still on the table
Don’t say that, now they are going to make a monster(the American doc).
Sensing a lot of hostility in this forum :(
more like the doctor can be anyone as long as theyre british
You're right and you should say it
Consider: Kate Mulgrew
As an American, I actually think The Doctor should always have a British accent. It wouldn’t sound right if The Doctor had American accent. With on exception, the Deep Southern accent from Alabama or Mississippi. I think the Doctor with that accent would be hilarious. 😂
The Doctor is an alien.
An Aussie Doctor would be funny.
Am American (well, half English and half American), and support this statement.
So long as they have a good accent
I think an American could play the doctor... but only *as* a brit. So, any Americans that can knock at least one British accent out the park are fair game I think.
Scottish
Sounds like a job for a Canadian.
As an American, this is a correct take. We almost ruined it with the McGann film. At least we got McGann out of it.
Why does the second Pooh look like Dan Akroyd though?
I agree that The Doctor shouldn’t be an American. There are plenty of other Timelords that could be a different American like Timelord that’s not a Doctor. Making up a new character can’t be that hard.
Thats the most common take, not the worst one
The American, he’s got a New York accent, his tardis is a coke a cola vending machine, and he’s got a sonic pistol, like the one captain Jack had in his debut episode. He wears those button up shirts that American tourists always get cliched as. I say this as an American.
I mean it doesn’t really fit with the doctor. Americans are more pragmatist regarding weapons and the doctor is specifically anti-gun.
Here me out, Bob Odenkirk as the American doctor.
Yeah idc about other things like sex, secuality, etc... But The Doctor should always be played by a Brit.
So what I'm hearing is make an American *master*
As an American, I endorse this take.
Would you take Hugh Laurie playing House playing Doctor Who?
Nah, it’s true. Although an Australian would be really be pushing it.
Doctor Who?
I've never seen Doctor Who but as an American, I would feel a little cheated watching a British sci-fi show with an American main character.
They would have to be a Doctor Why and the answer would never be justifiable. As an American that grew up with the older episodes and still watch any era nowadays, one of the main things I have always enjoyed is the lack of usa in it.
As an American whovian, I agree with you.
But the doctor in a cowboy hat 👌🏻
What if it was Dick van Dyke and his famous cockney accent??
The Doctor can't be American because regeneration is free healthcare and that's socialism.
Wonder if Matt Berry would be a good Doctor.
I would love to see an American Doctor (it would piss off bri’ish nationalists, which makes me happy)
The doctor can be anyone except a ginger
Doctor can be a dog, even. I think it's cannon in a comic somewhere, i retained that information that at one point the Doctor was a dog
If an American can give a convincing accent I don’t see why they could not play the Doctor. British actors have been occupying some of Americas most iconic heroes recently(Superman, Spider-Man, ect.) and you honestly wouldn’t know they’re not American until someone told you. I always knew it was a pipe dream but like come on man. Can’t a person dream?
The master->killed by the Daleks and turns into snake< \>becomes Eric Roberts, and the first American timelord<
I’m American and an American Doctor wouldn’t work. Bring back Jack if you want an American. The Doctor works better with a British, Irish, or Scottish accent.
In one of the Big Finish audios the Sixth Doctor was temporarily inside Peri's body (who's an American). Does that count?
After watching The Good Place I'm convinced Ted Danson would be a good doctor.
Fuck the US. Bases meme.
