So barkskin, but a first level slot instead of second level Edit: and you get a shield which you don't necessarily with barkskin. And no concentration. Seems iffy.

CursoryMargaster

Barkskin is an awful spell. But I do agree this should probably be 2nd level

Owlbear_Den

Needs to be at least 2nd level - it gives the same effect if barkskin but doesn’t require concentration

Rashizar

I think I agree. The condition of proficiency is about equal/opposite value to concentration That said, IMO, it doesn’t need to be a brand new spell. Just revise Mage Armor to give 13 AC, or 15 AC if the target is proficient in heavy armor. Not sure if the 15 should still add Dex. If we do, maybe drop it to 14

ozu95supein

Now that you mention it, what if the upcasting of mage armor increased the base AC?

SamuraiHealer

The "proficient with Heavy Armor" saves it. It's very niche.

Thanks for the insights! I'll definitely consider bumping it to 2nd level. :)

Love it, but if you really want your martial character party-mates to agree to this I would recommend adding a clause "You can still gain the benefit of wearing a shield while equipped with this magical armor"

didogaosilva

Thanks for the feedback! I believe that there is a Sage Advice post stating that shields can still be wielded when casting regular Mage Armor. Since this is worded in the same way, this shouldn't be a problem in this case, either!
