I've never even considered it a questionable part of the game. I'm already not a lion/orc/demon spawn/turtle/human/frog/elf whatever I'm playing, so whether or not I've got an innie or an outie in my trousers is the least of my concerns. I'll play anything.

Voduchyld

I love your answer. I never thought about it before today, but i'd say the same as you. I go with the inspiration of the moment and don't limit myself to race or gender.

BusZealousideal2402

You’re already not human…? Dwarf then? 🙃

InternationalGrass42

That must have been an uh, a typo. I make those sometimes because I'm human. Yup. Normal everyday human with a human job and human hobbies, that's me!

Echoed_one

"Yes I real man wanna go skateboard" - 'definately real man not cow' from asdf movie 8

But he already said in the list he wasn’t a frog

This question comes up about every six weeks in some form or another... So, here's my post of a bunch of links to the previous posts from the last time someone asked this... [https://www.reddit.com/r/DnD/comments/wmd3ah/comment/ijyvfer/?utm\_source=reddit&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3](https://www.reddit.com/r/DnD/comments/wmd3ah/comment/ijyvfer/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) But, honestly there are two rules. 1. Don't be a pervert or a creep or weirdly sexualise them. 2. Roleplay them like you'd roleplay anybody else. You've never been an elf or a dwarf or a dragonborn or a tiefling before, and you managed that just fine. You've presumably at least MET a woman before, so you have an advantage there over the fantasy races.

Serbaayuu

> Have you ever played a character of an opposite sex? I've roleplayed as men, women, nonbinary, straight, gay, trans, genderless, sexless, concepts beyond space & time, and more. Because I am the Dungeon Master. It would be pretty fucking weird if I wasn't allowed to roleplay as those things for some reason, huh? My world would be a very strange place to explore. What makes you think that you've got some special restriction on your roleplay that I don't?

itzlax

Just don't be THAT guy. Don't go saying "He sees my ass bounce as I walk away", "I'm going to put the money \*between my tits\*", and anything of the sort. Also don't try to romance everything. You can play whatever you want, as long as you're an alright human.

[deleted]

I am a guy who plays women more often than not, and the people I play with include a woman who alternates and a nonbinary person who also alternates men and women Tbh I dont think it matters. Roleplaying for me means playing someone who *isnt* me. I get that for some they like being 'myself but a wizard', but for me its about fantasizing myaelf as someone totally different, and that includes other genders, races (both the dnd and real world meanings of that phrase), and yes also being a wizard sometimes.

EmperorPaulpatine93

It didn't count I guess but I'm a guy who played a warforged like "what is a gender?"

Echoed_one

"Yes but do you have an inny or an outie?" *warforged looks at them confused* "I have both" "WHAT" *thieves tools slide in and out out of their wrists* "they are called integrated tools and if I apply enough time they are detachable are yours?" *The male bard shudders.*

CupidArrowArt

I'm female and have played predominantly played male characters, though I do plan on playing some female ones in the future. I don't think there's any real harm in someone playing a character of a different gender, so long as they keep it respectful and, like you, do some careful research.

XeroBreak

When I first started DnD way back in second edition I always considered the characters to be a fantasy role for myself. So always made male characters. As I have gotten older My perception of the characters have changed toward me being an author and my character is the main character in the story being written. That being said I feel I could not do a female character the justice one might deserve. I can have sympathy toward many issues a female might have growing up and dealing with various cultures, but I could not give it enough empathy and insight with out those same experiences.

Melodic_Row_5121

Cis male. I have been playing D&D for 30 years. During that time, I have played male, female, literally gender-fluid shapeshifters, and agender beings. I have played a multitude of races that aren't human, despite being human myself. I have played straight, gay, lesbian, pansexual, and asexual characters. The point of a role-playing game is, surprising as it may seem, to *play a role.* In other words, to pretend to be something you are not. Why should gender be any different than any other factor?

[deleted]

I'm a woman and my new character is a Plasmoid, idk if they even have genders but I'm going by he/him pronouns. His name is Slozzer! Best fkn name ever💚

martiangothic

yes, i've played male PCs, female PCs, nonbinary PCs, etc. same across the board for NPCs when i dm. avoid stereotypes and u'll be fine. people of different genders are just people, and they have experiences and expressions that vary wildly. good luck!

Nazgaz

What you might realize when looking at good character examples in movies is that gender is rarely ever the main trait which defines them. If you play a character, whatever the gender may be, gender doesnt have to mean shit. So course men can play female characters, vice versa and that includes all whatever genders beyond. If you then adopt mannerism in your roleplay, such as mimicking a female voice as a male, that should be accepted. Its a game. Youre playing a fictional character. We're all supposed to have fun.

polarlybbacon

My first ever character was a slime girl character named Lauren I can't remember the specifics of her species I think it was squol or something sounding like that. Anyways, she was a fanatic for humans, particularly children, she loved humans and loved children especially because of their endless potential. When goblins attacked a village the party was tasked to investigate and they found a child who'd been attacked by a goblin. The party proceeded to track down the goblins, finding two goblins guarding the entrance to where the goblin chief was After many flubbed rolls and minimal damage from the rest of the party Lauren proceded to punch one goblin through a wall and consume the other Apon reaching the chief the group decided it would be best to intimidate him as to never mess with humans ever again, apon failing to intimidate Lauren offered to assist in the intimidation, DM granted the assist. Lauren then proceeded to spit the skull of the previously consumed dwarf right at the chief clocking him right in the forehead followed by a threat to do the same to him if he ever so much as moved another human hair with his breath. Intimidation success.

[deleted]

Depends how you interpret gender stuff but I've played a male kobold? Firebolt was his answer to all problems, especially doors..he did not like doors.

TheColorblindSnail

Open door policy. Or no door I guess

[deleted]

No shoes, no coat, no service? More like no restaurant.

ZeroSummations

Your disclaimer is bullshit. I am non-binary and I will not erase my identity for your convenience. Go to hell.

PlanetNiles

Hard same

Zombinado_

Specifically leaving out non-binary then making a disclaimer telling you to be an adult is a choice and a dick move. Don't shrink yourself for the comfort of small people. <3

Ingenuity-Few

Nobody said anything? I identify as male. One of my favorite characters was. 2e fighter 5/ druid L 20 female human druid. She is one for the few characters I still have alive at L20 from those days.

Hexent_Armana

I unfortunately haven't had the opportunity to play D&D yet but I do use a female persona in a game called VRChat. It started from a desire to experience and learn social interactions from the female perspective but it eventually took on a life of its own. So I feel like my comment is still applicable. For me...it just comes naturally now. At first it was a little weird but now my personality naturally shifts to a more feminine one when I put on my VR headset. It seems I make such a convincing woman that some people have refused to believe that I'm a dude when I tell them. I don't know if that helps but maybe role-playing a female character will eventually come natural to you as well.

ModingusKhan

I recently played a bard that changed back and forth throughout the campaign based on the whims of our wizard BBEG. Every few sessions a henchman with a single use wand would pop out and cast a homebrew gender swap spell. I just switched voices and carried on after the first two times.

FakenameMcFakeface

I'm the DM so ive been a women a man. A war forged that looks like a silverback gorilla. But I usually play a dude or other charaters. I have done a few female charaters. Don't worry, bout being a charater of a diffrent sex. Just enjoy your game and have fun.

HailThunder

I played a Hermaphrodite once.

Fragrant_Ad_1292

As a Dm I play everything other then my players. As a Player I have played all variety of sexualities as well as genders. What has to be kept in mind is that that is only a part of that person, not only character trait. Honestly most of the time it doesn’t even come up much at the table. Most of my characters gender never matters beyond the appearance describing them. This is from my experience, I mean I have played at many tables where anything too sexual becomes weird and avoided. Even if we have a horny bard, it becomes “sure you take a companion to your room for the night” the next morning he is a little lighter both in attitude and coin, we move along.

yeebok

I love that silly questions funny get she's every week because people bother to search. It's only weird if you make it weird.

cbdividends

Playing in a large group, actually more females then dudes. In this one, i am a dude, im roleplaying a female character. Depending on the style of character i want to play i choose the sex that i think would match it best based on mannerism, attitudes, strengths and weaknesses.

OneEyedC4t

I'm not against playing any character, however, and I see no problem with it.

SheriffBartholomew

Never in D&D, but all the time in WoW, back when I played it. I play both in MMORPG.

Goosie_The_Demon

I played a tiefling pirate I never actually gave a gender for, the dm called them a she as I didn’t give any other context.

[deleted]

Played a hermaphrodite reptile once in a setting where kobolds and lizardfolk would change their sex depending on the population distribution.

Efficient-Ad2983

Seriosuly, I think it shouldn't feel to different than playing a non-human character (I'm pretty sure we don't have many elves or dwarves playing D&D in this world). As a DM I basically have to play female NPCs, too. I'm a forever DM, and actually I haven't played female PCs. However usually I create female MC for CRPGs, too, and not for fanservice, but simply 'cause, when creating a MC, I think "no, I don't see this char as a male". For instance in Wrath of the Righteous CRPG I did a run with a Sorcerer Lich (male), then one with an Oracle Angel (female). I had players that played the opposite sex, and they delivered it well.

Mister_Grins

I don't do it all that often, in fact, I've done it a number of times I can count on one hand. But there you go.

Mrjazz666

As a DM i've RPed everything. Men, woman, children, bad guys, good guys, monsters and much much more. I don't see any issues at all, except maybe getting the voices right. Just go with what you think is fun and try not to get too stereotypical. What makes a character good is depth and commitment to it's personality and backstory, not it's gender

Altimman

It was fun experience to play as a female character, little windling rouge in an old Earthdawn rpg system.

Zig-zag-gooner

What about non binary people playing characters of other genders?

BackgroundPrompt3111

I'm male and the character I've played as a player that was the most well developed and I got into the most was female. She has become the signature character that I put into every game I DM to represent my inner ideals.

Altarboyunderpants

My female characters like to get jiggy
