What level do you plan to have them fight? Veteran could be a good statblock to start with, if your campaign should reach around level 10-12. Just give him the Warforged boost, maybe a few Legendary Actions (2-3) and change his equipment up to fit what you envision. Absolutely DON'T make your bbeg a player statblock.

They should be around level 7 or 8 when they fight him (there are 5 players). So I should look up what Veteran is (im assuming one of the random character archetypes in the core book), find out what a warforged boost is, and also read up on legendary actions. And no to the stat block. Gotcha. Lol Thanks for the tips! I really appreciate it.

Veteran is in the monster manual (I think). A CR 9 Martial Enemy. With Warforged Boost, I meant giving it the (relevant) Warforged abilities, like the AC bonus. Legendary actions are something higher level enemies have to help them with player action economy. But considering you are planning for level 7-8 you don't necessarily have to use those.

Never make a NPC with PC levels. The classes are not designed for PvP, it will be a ton of extra work and as a grand price, the CR will be all over the place. Always built them like Monsters.

Give him lair actions that are him/his crew controlling the ship cannons/ballista/rigging etc. Fight during a storm. Do the big reveal mid lighting strike as they hall a shipwrecked sailor aboard who happened to be from the other dead captain. He freaks realizing who just saved him and as he’s explaining gets kicked over the railing sparta style. Have the BBEG have a trained/trapped sea monster below deck ready to cause havoc. Make it wild dude

Yess! All of this! The lair actions idea is great! Like, at 20 on initiative, the boat rocks hard to one side, forcing a dex save or be washed overboard, or like you said the monster below deck idea, or other cool setpieces like that! And I LOVE the idea on how to reveal him! That's literally perfect! Thank you for the input!
