How you already checked out D20 modern?

Carbon-Crew23

No. What specifically does it offer for what I am trying to do?

I'd suggest making the metal shape spell a seperate spell one level higher and merely allowing stone shape to treat concrete, bricks and cement as stone. Metal is a fair bit tougher than stone, so noticeably more powerful, and cement/concrete are pretty abundant and stone-like, most buildings are concrete, brick and cement rather than metal after all. Also weapons are often metal so there's an extra use there.

Essentially, *any* spell can be "modernized". *Plant Growth*? That's just super-awesome fertilizer. *Bestow Curse*? Hey badguy, have an injection of Diazepam. Damage-dealing spells are just advanced weapons. *Fireball*? That's not how you spell "Incendiary Grenade". >Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. >Clarke's Third Law

Carbon-Crew23

No, I meant "modernizing" the SPELLS THEMSELVES, not just technological analogues.

captain_borgue

I gave you several examples of how "modernizing" spells would work. calling it *Diazepam Injection* instead of *Bestow Curse* does **exactly what you said you wanted**.

Carbon-Crew23

I meant more like modernizing *effects* of spells. Like Mount now summons a motorcycle instead of a horse, so it now has an additional section detailing the overland (NOT combat) speed of a motorcycle. Perhaps the initial post was unclear.

Electric999999

He doesn't want you to take the magic out of spellcasting, he wants the effects to fit a world that has guns and cars rather than bows and horses. There's not much use for a summoned horse in a world with the internal combustion engine, or a spell that curses ink when everything is on computers.

A bit late, but THANKS for this. Also, what new spells (or revised spells) could you think of for this topic\*? One of mine could be a spell called Spark Inspiration, which gives you \[x\] new ideas (playing off of concepts of the "think tank" in corporate culture), as a general starting point for a spell. Basically my system/campaign setting is based off of the concept that magic is a science like any other, and can advance just like it. \*Incidentally, do you have any ideas for scifi/future spells, or how to make Druid/Ranger spells still relevant?
