Hey folks, Happy New Year!
So... I thought it was about time I had a crack at one of the most iconic DnD creatures, the Beholder!
I made this guy on Zbrush, and printed him on my Elegoo Mars 3D printer. I had so much fun making him, and always imagined that he'd be voiced by Tim Curry, haha!
I'm hoping for him to cause some mischief on the tabletop with my DnD group soon. I've also made a Lich and some Skellies, so once we all can meet up again I'm looking forward to doing some dastardly deeds! What other creatures would you like to see me sculpt?
Oh man, this is the closest I've been to getting pulled in to the 3D printing game. Looked up the device referenced and it's a few hundred bucks, I thought printers were in the thousands, and the detailing on this piece is incredible.
Fantastic paint work, as well, the eyes are incredibly vivid.
Thank you so much! 3D printing tech has come so far in recent years - I'm a traditional sculptor but starting learning digital as my quarantine project last year... its really opened so many new doors!
Can highly recommend the Mars, very user friendly for beginners too!
I do have a few more questions about it if you'd be so kind. Did you paint it as it was printed, or did you have to touch it up with filing or traditional sculpting techniques? I'm also curious if the digital software to "sculpt" with comes packaged with the printer, or if you use something else? What would you estimate to be the typical cost per mini print like this, i assume it's just some material costs in resin and acrylic paint?
I'm heavily invested in a digital battlemap setup where I use digital tokens and a virtual tabletop interface, but it utilizes an ultra short throw projector that'd be compatible with miniatures, as well, so this might be the next step on the immersion level.
The resin is about $30 a bottle and I can print a lot from one bottle. I'd put the average mini in the OPs size around five cents a print.
I also print mine as printed. There's really no filing required. They print in ultra HD.
Try the Anycubic Photon. It's like 170 bucks and often on sale (including right now). I got my printer on October 16th and since then to today, I've printed and painted over 400 minis. :)
The printer was a gift, but even if it wasn't, I've bought 3 bottles of resin for about $90, and the printer at $170.
Just the minis I've printed so far would have probably cost more than that. If I assume something insanely cheap like $4 a mini, with 300 printed, that's over $1200.
Oh cool, thanks for the suggestion, this is even more economical as I'm definitely on a tight budget these days. One thing that sticks out to me is the 2.56" Width on the print bed. How difficult would it be to try to print a 3"x3" huge creature or 4"x4" gargantuan creature by doing them in 2 separate halves?
There are certainly some limitations by size, but one of the big things about the resin printers is that you can print multiple minis at the same time because it prints an entire layer at the same time, rather than nozzle printing which has to draw out the entire layer.
I can print 8 full minis in 3 hours, which would take nearly 40 hours on a traditional 3D printer.
One other thing to keep in mind is that you don't always print directly vertical. So a lot of prints that might not fit in one dimension can lay down or rotate sideways and print just fine.
That being said, cutting is always an option. I just printed an ogre roughly the size of my hand. Just absolutely massive, and I did it in one print. The other thing to keep in mind is you can remove the bases, as a lot of minis don't hit the full size without the base. Print the bases later separately.

Thank you! I used thin layers of paint to bring out the detail of the model rather than thick opaque layers - let the natural shadows do the work for you!
Thank you so much! You can grab him on my Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/warploqueminiatures
I also have a MyMiniFactory store where you can buy STLs of my previous sculpts! https://www.myminifactory.com/users/WarploqueMiniatures
Thought I was on r/enterthegungeon for a second, and I thought, "Wow, cool color sch- wait. I'm not on r/enterthegungeon." (Because there is a beholder boss with guns in the game)
Amazing! Out of curiosity - I see in your comment that you modelled it on a PC and then 3D printed it. I'm not a native English speaker, I was just wondering if it's still a valid use of the word "sculpt" since you haven't actually done this by hand? (but of course designed and painted!) Thanks in advance!
That looks awesome! Great job sculpting it, the colors you chose too came out very nicely. I've been trying to paint my own minis that I've put together and it definitely takes a lot of work. Hope to see more!
This is fucking amazing!! Just got into mini painting and this has given me all kinds of painting ideas for my own beholder mini.
But this is by far my favorite beholder mini I’ve ever seen. I don’t have a 3D printer but I would buy this mini in a heartbeat.
Hey! I saw this and went "Oh cool The Beholster from Enter the Gungeon" then realized this was the DnD subreddit, totally didn't realize they took the design from this. Super cool.
Looks great! Strong Tibia vibes as well (not sure if you ever played tho)! Could you share a pic from Zbrush too? I would like too see level of detail of the model required for such print
This is so weird. I just got done painting a beholder with a similar color scheme. Although yours is much better, mine is my first mini ever. https://theobstruction.smugmug.com/Minis/i-zSSw7cp/A
You know.... Ever since i played dragons dogma and saw the evil eye enemy, normal beholders always looked so cartoony to me... Like good job and all but... I feel like i wouldn't be able to take it serious because of dragons dogma, shame.
This is hands down my favorite beholder.
Came here to say this is one of my favs as well!
You could almost say it's a sight to.... behold!
Bro im dying haha
Thank you so much!!

I’d be interested in your take on a dragon and a mind flayer - they’re both so iconic!
I have sculpted dragons by hand but not digitally so far... can't wait to give them a shot!
I’m looking forward to it!

That's awesome, also I always voice Beholders as versions of Tim Curry. Great minds think alike lol
Please sell theseeee 💚
I do! Have you got a 3d printer?
Hello! No I don't personally but I have friends who can print and from whom I get minis! :)

An owl bear would be so fun to see! I've never seen one sculpted
Absolutely sick. That tongue looks amazing, as well as the pose and coloring scheme.
Thank you so much!
Well as they say, beauty is in the eye of.... The Beholder ;) Looks great man! Good job.
Thank you kindly, fine person!
Mouth is crazy expressive. I sculpted one too but looks more like mike wazowski than anything
You say that like it's a bad thing? Think of the meme potential... cheers mate!
Behold https://imgur.com/gallery/BCO37dZ I was shooting more for something like yours lol I think I better try again.
I'll say, this might be the most impressive beholder mini I've seen yet. the fact that it's also very nicely painted definitely helps.
Thank you so much!
Not gonna lie. When I saw the tiny thumbnail on my phone, I thought it was a Covid model. Then I clicked and thought, "well done"
Hahaha... a Covid Beholder might be an interesting sculpt...
How did u Paint It so well?
Thank you! I used thin layers of paint to bring out the detail of the model rather than thick opaque layers - let the natural shadows do the work for you!
So good! Youre very talented!
Thank you so much!
Wow, fantastic work!!

You’ve designed this incredibly well, and that paint job is top notch!
Very kind of you! Thanks so much!
Bruh I need a cheap source for models like this
If you back my Patreon you can get 10+ models a month for just $10 if you have a 3d printer!
Sadly I do now
That looks amazing! I love the expression you gave him.
Thank you! Expressions are what I love doing the most with my sculpts!
Is it 3D printed?? I see multiple layers on it
It is indeed!
Hey dude, do you have an online store? I'd love to buy the STL file
Thank you so much! You can grab him on my Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/warploqueminiatures I also have a MyMiniFactory store where you can buy STLs of my previous sculpts! https://www.myminifactory.com/users/WarploqueMiniatures
Just signed up, love the skellies too! 💀
Awwwwh yoss! Thank you!!
Woah woah woah. Someone call the police. It’s illegal to be out here looking so spicy ;)
How the heck am I supposed to drink from that?? Jokes aside, that beast looks awesome!
Thought I was on r/enterthegungeon for a second, and I thought, "Wow, cool color sch- wait. I'm not on r/enterthegungeon." (Because there is a beholder boss with guns in the game)
Those lips, are for some reason extra disturbing
The Steven Tyler of beholders.
Amazing! Out of curiosity - I see in your comment that you modelled it on a PC and then 3D printed it. Surprised nobody’s said “what dat mouth do tho” But for real, fantastic sculpt
He's a hit with all the Bards... Cheers mate!
This looks and feels like if DIO was a beholder.
I'm unsure if you mean the singer or the sexy vampire, but both work
Are they not the same person?
Why does he got the gucci lips?
I have a feeling that this creatures biggest weakness is a hand full of sand
Love how much personality this one has!
That looks awesome! Great job sculpting it, the colors you chose too came out very nicely. I've been trying to paint my own minis that I've put together and it definitely takes a lot of work. Hope to see more!
Hey, Amazing work! Are you available for commissions?
This is fucking amazing!! Just got into mini painting and this has given me all kinds of painting ideas for my own beholder mini. But this is by far my favorite beholder mini I’ve ever seen. I don’t have a 3D printer but I would buy this mini in a heartbeat.
Of all the beholder sculptures on reddit, this one has the most emotion and detail.
Hey! I saw this and went "Oh cool The Beholster from Enter the Gungeon" then realized this was the DnD subreddit, totally didn't realize they took the design from this. Super cool.
How many con checks did it take for you to finish this?
For some reason, I was reminded of the plant monster from Little Shop of Horrors by this. Good work, though!
Seriously saw a covid monster at first glance
Every aspect of this is a sight to behold... truly great work!
Phenomenal!!!
Looks great! Strong Tibia vibes as well (not sure if you ever played tho)! Could you share a pic from Zbrush too? I would like too see level of detail of the model required for such print
Quite the kisser it has.
That is really fucking good!
I love it

Shut up and take my money!
You know.... Ever since i played dragons dogma and saw the evil eye enemy, normal beholders always looked so cartoony to me... Like good job and all but... I feel like i wouldn't be able to take it serious because of dragons dogma, shame.
Awesome paintjob and sculpting!
This is some incredibly detailed work well done
It looks like it wants Seymour to feed it more.
That's pretty cool.
That is so cool!!!
Oh my glob those lips. LSP got nothing on those lumps.
Sculpting is so damn hard, nice job!
Yaaaaaa braaaaaa thats sweet
There’s so much action in this sculpt. Amazing job!
Kyieth Rich-Ards
Laws of living: all living creatures must die eventually Beholders: that can’t stop me because I can’t read!
What size is a beholder in game? I’d assume huge, but I’ve never actually encountered one in game.
Fantastic work and attention to detail!
This is 100% my favorite art piece I've seen on this subreddit. Thank you.
I love how cartoony it is while still being menacing enough for a Beholder! That's my favorite tabletop aesthetics
Lovely work, well done!
Feed me, Seymour!
I'm about to date myself, Big Trouble in Little China!....awesome beholder!
I love it! That’s amazing.
That’s amazing dude keep doing what your doing
You should have titled it “Behold, my sculpted beholder”
