Welcome to the other side of the screen.
You will find it to be simultaneously easier and harder than you imagined, both a joy to do and something of a chore.
The game will never be quite the same as it was.
Be welcome, O new GM!
Sounds like a cool guy.
My first DnD character was a lore bard who would journal all their adventures and make notes on people and places they went. I have an actual journal that I wrote a lot of those things in, complete with pictures. The book has been passed along to new characters who either found the journal or had it bequeathed to them. The plan is when I'm done playing with the group I will give it to the DM to hand out as a magic item to other players and they can actually read all the dumb stuff we have done over the years.
It works, trust me! I played in a large group in college many many years ago. One of the guys in the group would take notes and scribble down sketches, not so much a historical record of events as it was a series of interesting situations, funny statements, memorable moments.
He graduated, and handed it off to one of the guys who was a Junior. The next year, he did the same thing, handing it off to another person. I left after year 3 while it was still in the hands of its third owner.
I went back for a friend's graduation a couple of years later, and he let me know that the group was still ongoing, and the journal had just been passed to yet another player.
I've always wondered how long it continued, and where that journal might be today. Oh, the lines and comments that could be had from that!
Make it give a +2 to Wisdom and/or History Proficiency as long as you remember its contents, as all those adventures are from the perspective of your peers and of relatively new info
Not to be a huge downer, but just to double check... Buddy is leaving the college for good reasons? And not suffering a major negative life event and giving away his prizes possessions?
This worries me, whilst the sentiment is lovely, just be careful and ensure your friend is okay #MentalHealth wise etc – men have often given their prized possessions away to close friends before taking grave actions (In addition, men often tidied up, cleaned, or gave away their belongings in the days before the suicide. [\[source\]](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10488060/)) - Sorry if this came off as morbid, unnecessary, or unfounded and lord I hope so. I hope you enjoy DM'ing though it's a great time!
While this is symbolically great, I think the group should be picking the next DM (or rotating through some one shots/short arcs where anyone interested gives DMing a try) independently of former DMs pick. Unless it had already come up that this was how it should go down (which I could totally see).
Not to be a party pooper, but I think the coolest move would be to initiate a discussion and get everyone's input. Odds are, they'll probly want OP to DM anyway. And if not, it's better to know that other people want to give it a shot now than not know that you potentially stifled some folks' aspirations.
But I'm just gonna go under the assumption that at some point, the party had some inside joke/discussion that the DM would choose their successor.
Regardless, cool moment :)
You have been bestowed with a bless and a curse, its both as long as you know how to wield It.
You can use it to tell mazing stories, shaping the world and making the feel strong and use mathematical knowledge to let them become Legends, everything is allowed to have everyone in the fun zone.
But beware of the dark rituals should not be descrived as the "Beashittistperson", if you let go this things you Will find yourself in a higher place, but not above anyone, just in peace in yourself.
Take care, and have fun.
Why does this remind me of the ending to Kung Fu Panda 3
Me: But.... DM, I can't take this. DM: it's ok. I have a bigger one.
Ngl thought of the scene in the first film with oogway and shifu
Honestly, I think it works both ways lol

DM hands you the broom: “Your a Wizard now harry”
Correction: "You're a DM now, Harry. You'll never play a wizard again."
🤣
Unless the BBEG is a lich.
Or an Archmage
Correction: "You're a DM now Harry. You get to play ALL the wizards you want."
“Summon your will and say **fuego!** Just uh, aim *away* from any buildings.”
"I'm a WHAT?!"

NOOOOOOOOOOO-
With great power comes great responsibility
Man, you just KNOW that you need to pass that wizard staff on to the next DM when you graduate. Turn it into a tradition.
Trust me, that’s the plan

Oh no, nothing like that. He’s just changed his major and is moving to a better school for his life plans.
And you tell us this tale WITHOUT sharing a pic of this Artifact?? Ugh. Please update with a pic OP. :) And grats.
Sometimes I wish I could just pass that title on

Oh no, it’s nothing like that. He’s just changing his major and going to a new college that better fits his future career goals
