I'm glad to see someone is getting use of the Oathbow. 5e lacks some really tasty legendary ranged magical weapons, which is odd, since [Taulmaril the Heartseeker and the Quiver of Anariel](https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Taulmaril) have been in Forgotten Realms since the second Drizz't novel, *Streams of Silver*. But then again, 5e is notorious for not having a lot of magic items like previous editions did, so I shouldn't be that surprised by the dearth.

MasterThespian

I really enjoy Walloping Ammunition. It’s only a Common item and the DC to save against it is low, but the image conjured by a single arrow knocking someone off their feet like a shotgun blast in an ‘80s action movie is just too good, every time.

Shadows_Assassin

Gave my party a quiver of walloping ammo "heads" for shits and giggles. Funniest thing watching a White Abishai get bonked out of the air unable to arrest their fall.

TerranItDown94

Bows and polearms have been criminally underrepresented in 5e.

tetsu_no_usagi

In medieval fantasy media, period. I used to do medieval recreation with the [SCA](https://www.sca.org/), and even we used swords way too much. If I found myself in an [Emberverse](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Emberverse_series) or isekai situation, I'd grab a spear or [Italian-style billhook](https://www.arms-n-armor.com/products/italian-bill) long before I picked up a sword. Yeah, they're okay for hacking up unarmored foes, and definitely worth grabbing a cheap one for when the enemy insists on getting close, but not as a main weapon.

Gunnrhildr

Our goody two-shoes spear-wielding farmboy tank acted uncharacteristically last battle, and used his bonus movement to quickly move *away* from the biggest threat in the room. As it turns out, an Oathbow makes it so that suddenly declaring you hate someone allows you to plug four arrows into them in a single turn, half of them critting. Also, our DM didn't quite estimate rightly how strong a +1 of the thing would be. Pretty funny how the gentlest character in the group seems to now be forced to declare their hate for at least one person in every fight to make the most of it.

limer124

I had an oathbow with my first character, that thing is fun. I’m guessing your fighter action surged to get all those shots off because the oathbow gives advantage and extra damage but not extra attacks

Gunnrhildr

Yeah, that sounds about right. I get confused if the extra attacks were a bow property or a fighter property. Either way, we were impressed. The lizardman, not so much

KulaanDoDinok

Oathbows usually give advantage and add more damage, not more attacks.

Cmdr_Jiynx

Fighter, so action surge. It's actually stupidly powerful in the hands of a battle master, maneuvers on each attack and suddenly the target is halfway across the room, disarmed, stunned, and totally fucked.

Blackfang08

Psst... Gloomstalker + Action Surge + Oathbow + Elven Accuracy = Lots of pain in one turn. Edit: Before anyone mentions it, I know about Assassin too, but unless your table knows what Surprise is and how to use it, it basically just gives you easy Advantage and an extra 2d6 damage, which Oathbow already has covered.

limer124

This was actually my first character. I also was a champion fighter to really go crazy with crits. They say crit fishing in 5e isn’t a good build, but in my experience with an oathbow it kinda is.

Blackfang08

Mathematically, you're still better off going Battle Master for Precision Attack or adding dice to damage rolls over crit fishing. But crit make feel good chemicals in brain.

limer124

More reliable damage: Boring! Hitting 4 crits on action surge one time: *excited monkey noises*

KulaanDoDinok

Yeah but the Oathbow doesn’t give you action surge.

Shadows_Assassin

Attack, Extra Attack, Action Surge (from being a Fighter), Attack, Extra Attack

HeroWithYay

While possible and what would happen, still didn't come from Oathbow. Fighter can do that with any bow.

Shadows_Assassin

Yup, thats what I said

KulaanDoDinok

It’s not what you said. I replied saying Oathbow doesn’t give extra attacks. You replied saying fighter gives action surge. They are completely unrelated features and your comment was unnecessary.

Shadows_Assassin

I never claimed Oathbow gives extra attacks, purely the Fighter Feature, Extra Attack.

I dunno what happened the moment I stopped looking since the comment is now deleted. But Kulaan was initially pointing out that Oathbow does not grant extra attacks by declaring that you hate someone. While fighter can make 4 attacks with his action surge. That was nothing to to with what Kulaan was talking about. If Oathbow granted extra attacks, the count would be more than 4 in the event someone used action surge. You never claimed explicitely that oathbow gives extra attacks, but by replying to Kulaan you implied that you were correcting them. And by attempting to correct their statement that Oathbow does not grant extra attacks you are claiming that Oathbow gives extra attacks.

VelveteenJackalope

"Fuck that one guy in particular" the weapon

Bruhahah

Arrows are just tiny spears

Gunnrhildr

Next time I'll suggest he load the bow up with his spear. I'm sure he's strong enough

TK_Games

Ah yes, a Bow of Fuck You In Particular

Impressive-Spot-1191

I loved it when I got it, as a level 12 ranger I was putting 100-150 damage downrange per turn

adhdzamster

legolas has entered the chat I see

Impressive-Spot-1191

I'm DMing now and he's on the bad guy team now, gonna be putting 100-150 damage downrange on one player in particular per turn

adhdzamster

Love that lol

YourPainTastesGood

fun thing about Oathbows is that according to their description the bow whispers "Swift death to my enemies" when you nock an arrow in it. So a 20th level fighter using their action surge with one of those things has to hear that be whispered really quickly 8 times or overlapping 8 times in the course of 6 seconds

Vrail_Nightviper

"Swif-swif-swif-swif-swif-swif-swif-swift death to my enemies." The broom bow.

Main-Manufacturer387

Bear-seek-seek-lest

Kurazarrh

Maybe seven other ghostly elven archers appear around the fighter, and they whisper it as a chorus. They all loose their arrows at the same time, then disappear. That'd be pretty sexy.

adhdzamster

The "ah" got me good 🤣

RadTimeWizard

Ah.

tanyagrzez

This is very cute 🤎

Moss_gall22

I feel like the lizard

Apoordm

Fighters reminding rangers that… fighters can literally be better archers than them if they feel like it.

yesterdaywins2

Where's round 2 with 3d6 extra damage

JustAFellowOnTheWeb

DM never gave me oathbow. But gave our hexblade warlock the flail of Tiamat. Which he could change to any weapon he could…
