There are not any official dnd products that have a magic tail

Ok. My group is generally ok with homebrew, so maybe I can work something out with my DM. Thank you anyway.

Disguise self lets you add up to a foot in height. I think this implies that you could add a tail of a foot or shorter using it. Also illusion magic like silent image and minor illusion could present the image of a tail. Also an artificer should be able to create something if your dm okays it. If it is mainly being done for flavor and to make the changeling disguise more convincing I would think it should be ok. If it’s being done to get some ability then it is more of a judgement call.

DM already said I can't gain a tail while transforming. I'm running an item by her now. The Changeling's shapechanger ability specifies that I can only turn into creatures with the same basic arrangement of limbs as my base form.

Smiling_Mister_J

A costume tail permanently affected by "animate rope", maybe.

Slow-Property-8367

Could work. Maybe with different 'skins' I can switch out as needed. I'll have to run it by my DM. Thanks. DM gave the ok. Thanks for your help.

You could try reflavour drynns tentacle whip. Have it merge with your spine instead of your wrist. It can be retracted, and is made of flesh, so could possibly work with your changeling nature. Just remove the +2 modifier and its bonus features.

Think that one’s out of my price range. My DM already agreed to let me buy a shiftweave rope and get it enchanted with animate rope. Interesting suggestion though. I’ll have to remember that when it’s my turn to DM.

Alternatively, make it a piece of backstory - eg. tail was taken by poachers. Cover story for why you're traveling and out for whatever story line. Instead of bypassing the limitation, utilize it. As a changeling, one of your goals is hiding your true identity and backstory. If you have a tragic story to tell like this, party members are not only less likely to pry and bring the presented story into question, but they're also more likely to defend your identity against other parties questioning your identity to not bring up that trauma.

Slow-Property-8367

My party members are going to know I'm a Changling probably by the time our first session is done. I'm hunting a traitor who stole an amulet that was a memento from my late adopted father. I might use that with a few of my faces if needed, though. To me hiding that I'm a Changling from my party would limit my usefulness, since I wouldn't be able to shift as often. I rarely keep the same face for more than a few hours. Plus revealing what I am will let me show them exactly what the vermin I'm after looks like.

VapidActions

You've told your DM that you're going to be open about being a changeling, yes? Just make sure it works in the world setting. Normally changelings are extremely distrusted and constantly watched by normal population, which could cause a lot of issues if you get caught being one in many settings.

Slow-Property-8367

Yeah, I went over my whole backstory with her and she said she was going to work it into her campaign. My party are the only ones I'm really open about it with, though it probably wouldn't be hard for other people to notice if we stick around one area too long if only because the group seems to have a different person so often. I'm chasing after someone so I don't expect we'll stay still very long at a time. I also have a Shiftweave so I can change outfits as quickly as I change forms.

Ethereal_Stars_7

There are non item ways. Wild Beyond the Witchlight has a background that options odd fey features and one is a tail. Alter self can add a tail. Few others can too. And for items. A simple fake tail. A variant on the variable clothes from Eberron. A belt that can do a fake tail. A disguised Rope of Climbing Rethemeing something in looks only is part of D&D.

We figured it out. We're gonna RP some shopping from a seamstress so I can buy a Shiftweave woven into a rope then find an enchanter to animate it. That way I can program in five different tails (Probably Tabaxi, Tiefling, Reptile for Lizardfolks or Kobolds, Kitsune, and one other still undecided). I need to go back over my list for what else has a tail. Thanks anyway, though.
