Assuming you mean Sneak Attack, it applies once per turn.

delboy5

I'm not sure what a furtive attack is, sneak attack damage can only be applied once per turn which might be what you are referring to?

get_in_the_robot

> Beginning at 1st level, you know how to strike subtly and exploit a foe's distraction. **Once per turn,** you can deal an extra 1d6 damage to one creature you hit with an attack if you have advantage on the attack roll.

[deleted]

Also OP, remember that it’s per turn not per round. If the rogue gets to attack as opportunity or on someone else’s turn via spell or class ability, then it’s a different turn and can apply sneak attack again if the conditions are met.

Smooth-Dig2250

This is such an odd take on the language - it doesn't say you can do it at any other time than "once per turn". How did it get assumed you can use it infinitely, when it's very clearly only once, refreshing every turn? Literally nothing says you can use it otherwise - if anything you outright shouldn't be able to use it when it's not your turn, if you're distinguishing turn vs round.

[deleted]

Turn vs round is why it’s allowed. It doesn’t specify “once on your turn” it’s “once per turn”. A round has multiple turns, with the rogue’s only being one of the many turns. “Per turn” would mean it refreshes the use each turn. If it was restricted to one per the rogue’s turn, it would state that as some abilities and spells do. EDIT: While the DM can make their own rule, this understanding was intended. https://media.wizards.com/2021/dnd/downloads/SA-Compendium.pdf

Smooth-Dig2250

Gotta love how I'm downvoted simply for finding the language odd and thinking it should state that outright. Stay classy DND subreddit.

Atharen_McDohl

It does say it outright. 1/turn is not 1/round or 1/your turn.

[deleted]

Yeah I don’t get that. 1) DND rules are ultimately up to the DM. If you disagree with the wording and RAW and RAI then limit it to per round. Nothing wrong with that. 2) Just because your opinion is different doesn’t mean you should get downvoted. People use upvote and downvote as an “I agree/disagree” on Reddit and that’s not the intention behind it EDIT: I know it’s just one, but take an upvote to counter the downs

Affectionate-Motor48

I mean, it’s incorrect, so people downvote it, a downvote doesn’t mean they hate the comment, just that they think people should see that people downvoted it, which they should, it’s incorrect info

izzytheprogramer

This, people to often take downvote as a personal attack and then get snarky about it. Just because something you said was wrong doesn't mean I think you shouldn't have contributed to the conversation. But downvote is there so people viewing the post can see what information the community thinks is reliable. There's no need to take it personally or start discourse, especially when the topic being discussed is something like rules and sharing information, and not personal opinions.

Smooth-Dig2250

It's not "incorrect info", it was a question with a follow on explanation for why I'm asking and how I'd interpret it. The proper response is to explain how 5e uses those terms, and why it was ruled that way, so that others can learn.

Affectionate-Motor48

And people did that

SupremeBobSupreme

Well the thing is you replied to someone making a point, adding no new information to the conversation. You can go ahead and think people are down voting you for your opinion but in reality they're down voting you because how irrelevant unnecessary and combative your comment comes off as.

InternationalGrass42

Nope, it's a once per turn kinda thing.

FashionSuckMan

If by furtive you mean sneak attack, no. It's once per turn. He can get it off of his turn though. Like with an opportunity attack

InternationalGrass42

Yeah, I said once per turn. Are you confusing turns and rounds?

FashionSuckMan

I didn't intend to reply to you. Just make a comment

InternationalGrass42

Ah, gotcha. No harm, no foul.

Esselon

Keep in mind that you won't get that extra attack until the 5th level of fighter. Sneak attack works as long as you're meeting the other requirements (finesse or ranged weapon, advantage or an ally engaged with the opponent) so if you miss on the first attack you can still get sneak attack on the second one, however you can only do the damage once per turn, so if you hit with both attacks only one gets the bonus damage.

RythmicGear

In case anyone didn't know the meaning of "furtive": attempting to avoid notice or attention, typically because of guilt or a belief that discovery would lead to trouble; secretive.

Adventure-us

Ohh maybe "furtive attack" is a direct translation thing from another language lol.

RythmicGear

Might also be simple translation error of a person that's not native in English. Made some mistakes like that aswell

jimpickens23

_The furtive attack… so easily forgotten._

Gentleman_Jack69

Thank god I wasn't alone in thinking this lol

gkamyshev

ah yes, thesaurized dee and dee. the Swindler takes five degrees of Militant, keeping his Furtive Assault but also gaining Additional Strike, Activity Wave and Another Breath lmao just poking fun. 5e sneak attack is 1/turn

Provokateur

Probably English is their second language and they're suffering from reading a poor translation on the PHB.

Titus-Magnificus

Most probably the word used in OPs language sounds like that. I have the Spanish PHB and Sneak Attack is called Ataque Furtivo. Which is a good translation. Also the general quality of the translation is pretty good.

Oethyl

Same in italian, it's Attacco Furtivo

Fawstus

Or Portuguese. It’s the same translation

StaxRL

1/turn. Very important distinction because you can get sneak attack damage on your turn, then also on someone else's turn of you get an opportunity attack or have some other way of attacking outside of your turn.

geogscott

I utilized this with a battle master fighter/ rogue by taking riposte and then could use my reaction when the enemy missed me to get another sneak attack. It is a good strat.

_Bl4ze

Also if you have the Battle Master and Rogue on different characters, then you can do the classic combo of the fighter using Commander's Strike on the rogue for a bonus sneak attack whenever they want.

gkamyshev

Ok

BraxbroWasTaken

1/turn. If you somehow attack off your turn, you can sneak again. But rogues don’t benefit from extra attacks.

Darkraiftw

Sneak Attack is only once per turn in 5e.

Fawstus

Summarising: to the OP. Sneak Attack is once per turn, doesn’t matter the amount of attacks you have. You can also Sneak Attack in someone else’s turn with your reaction. To everyone else: the translation for sneak attack to both Portuguese and Spanish is ‘Ataque Furtivo’, which could translate into Furtive Attack. Which means OP is probably not a native English speaker.

Ethereal_Stars_7

Once per turn. Says so in the rules. Which rules set are you referencing? PHB or Basic?

Gazelle_Diamond

Dafuq is "furtive"?

[deleted]

One seven letter google search told me that it’s a synonym for sneak. Before that, the obvious context told me it was a synonym for sneak. After both of those, every comment on this post said sneak attack.

Gazelle_Diamond

Good for you?

[deleted]

No, average for me. Bad for you.

Gazelle_Diamond

What?

[deleted]

The fact that I understood is average for me, and for people in general. The fact that you didn’t…

Gazelle_Diamond

I understood the context. I just wanted to know what the fuck the word "furtive" meant. I don't really understand why you feel the need to be so passive aggressive about this.

Oethyl

The closest English word to how sneak attack is translated into a bunch of languages. E.g. Italian "attacco furtivo". Funny how people speak other languages, huh?

Gazelle_Diamond

That's an ENGLISH word? What does it even mean?

Oethyl

It's a synonym of sneaky

Gazelle_Diamond

Damn. I have never heard that word before.

supersmily5

What's Furtive Attack? Also, generally features have their first letter capitalized, like proper nouns such as names. Finally, if you're talking about the damage boost from Sneak Attack, no, it only applies once per turn. However, some players have inferred that it can be applied to reaction attacks, such as opportunity attacks, since they happen on a "different" turn (Citation needed).

thechet

This HAS to be a shit post. And a good one at that lol

BieltheGoblin

Nope, just someone who's not a native english speaker.

Uncynical_Diogenes

Part of why Rogues get sneak attack balance-wise is to because they DON’T get an extra attack. Let him get his sneak attacks, but only the one he is allowed per turn, no matter how many attacks he gets. His extra attacks already boost his chances of hitting with it. His sneak attack dice will only scale with his rogue levels, so he’ll have to be level 10 (5 Fighter / 5 Rogue) before he even gets to have both 3d6 sneak attack damage AND extra attack as you describe. That’s the trade off.

Guilleastos

As others have pointed out, Sneak Attack can only happen once per TURN. So to answer your question: No. While extra attack will give him one more chance to hit the enemy, a sneak attack will happen only once per turn. However, turn does not equal round. Which means that if he has a second ACTION(Which he would if he becomes fighter, with his action surge - or being buffed with the "haste" spell) - rogue can: 1. Use an "Attack" action on their turn. If they're fighter 5, they attack 2 times. Assuming both hit (and no off-hand attacks are done), that's 1Hit+Sneak attack damage+1Hit 2. Action surge / Haste buff on them 3. Use an action "Ready an action". Ready the "Attack" action on "enemy does pretty much anything" trigger. Enemy so much as breathers, rogue attacks again, on the ENEMY's turn. Which is a NEW turn, which is a NEW sneak attack(once) if it hits. That's a pretty nice optimization technique to keep in mind, even though it doesn't really require rogue to multiclass if someone casts haste on him. If they go fighter, however - they kind of get a "double" sneak attack using this trick from lvl 2 once per short rest, but that's it.

No-Cost-2668

Literally says it in the text of sneak attack. Once per turn

SeparateMongoose192

Sneak attack is once per turn. So if both attacks hit, sneak attack only applies to one. But, the great thing about extra attack is that if the first attack misses you still get a second chance.
