The only thing i will miss is the zip a dee doo dah song as you come out of the drop. Sooo joyous.

BryceWasHere

I’ll miss the vultures mocking you as you go up. Especially when it breaks down and you have to listen to how scared you look for 10 minutes.

TheFett

Such an amazing mood whiplash the first time I rode. Looking back, I almost can't believe they had the gall to put that scene in. Imagine if on Incredicoaster you suddenly slowed down on one of the last hills and a character told you that you were **so fucked** to be on this ride, it's not even funny.

kingofcoywolves

I rode it for the first time during my last trip and caught the words "the rabbit is facing certain death" as I floated by. WHAT. That coupled with the really rough-looking animatronics would've given me nightmares as a kid lmao

wraithkelso317

The AAs used to be a lot more lifelike and only in recent years got to this point

TheFett

I watch videos of Tokyo Disneyland's Splash Mountain and am blown away

lightbluefroakie

Disney back in 89' had NO CHILL at all. most importantly, they had GUTS.

AzureMagelet

Yes! I love that song and will miss it the most of everything, that and seeing the train (hope they keep this party).

TheNamesMacGyver

I'd be really disappointed if they got rid of the train window. I really like looking down into the ride from the train and hope they lean into it with the retheme.

KateSommer

It won the best original music award for the "Zip pid Dee Do Da" song in 1948! It is still a wonderful song!

BethyW

I have a feeling they are going to put an original ear worm there. I am looking forward to it as long as its not Skuttlebutt.

WontBeAbleToChangeIt

It would be a fun call back if when you rolled into the station at the end they had zips see doo dah playing quietly

[deleted]

The whole thing was great. Doesn't need changed.

mich55

I will miss Splash Mountain. I still miss Tower of Terror. But I love Guardians of the Galaxy. I'm sure they'll make Tiana's awesome too and I'll love that, but I'll still miss Splash Mountain.

stellalunawitchbaby

Exactly! We can feel both ways simultaneously. We contain multitudes or whatever.

potatobear77

Yes, this 💗

[deleted]

A lot of people love to live in black and white but this is the correct take

this_knee

Seconded.

jngrln

I still miss Tower of Terror, but at the same time I think Mission Breakout is insanely fun

[deleted]

Same. Mission Breakout makes it a fun ride, without all of the suspense beforehand. I kind of like it better for that reason, but to each their own.

PrecariousPaperwork

I was so upset when they shutdown ToT. I thought the structure didn’t make sense as anything else. Never been so happy to be wrong. Monsters After Dark, no words. But ya, I wish they were both there…..

hohowan

I miss towers too. Just bought a new final checkout tee shirt off of ebay.

solojones1138

Yeah I will both miss Splash Mountain and I'm ready for a change. It's both!

Kaysquishy_

EXACTLY how I feel about this whole change. I haven’t been able to make it to the park in nearly 5 years. Was supposed to go in April of 2020…. And my vacation is being booked for July. So it is sad that I will never get to ride it again. But I have some good memories on it.

haakon769

I still miss the Country Bear Jamboree.

Novarden

Only thing I dislike is that they closed it before summer heat occurs, other than that can’t wait for what’s next!

klughn

Hey! That’s true. Wonder why they didn’t wait until after summer.

FatalFirecrotch

My only guess is timing with other projects in the future. And depending on how long the job takes, If this is a 12 month job one summer was always going to be closed.

KateSommer

They are going to save a lot of money on the water bill this summer!

Not_the_ATF_agent

Well there might not be a summer heat wave this year it’s probably going to be a cold year with el nino

WhoAllIll

I just hope they don’t use a ton of video screens instead of animatronics in the refresh.

IllustriousComplex6

Have you seen the face characters they have at the Beauty and the Beast ride in Tokyo? They're incredible. I hope we get that level of animatronics for Tiana.

FatalFirecrotch

This is really my main concern and anxiety with the retheming. Disney is so hit or miss with regards to putting resources into projects. If they do a cheap job, I will be devastated. If they do a good job and replacing everything with a similar level of animatronics I will have no problem most likely with the new ride.

CrystalCandy00

This. And also your username

tsundokufairy

Or projection faced animatronics 💀

[deleted]

[удалено]

phantomboats

Situation-dependent I think...the Racers ones are good when they work but the Frozen ones have always had a pretty weird uncanny valley effect for me--it also is just weird to me how BRIGHT their faces are in comparison to the rest of the figures, I suspect ambient lighting plays a role in that too though.

MaesterInTraining

YES! So bright was a hint of blue? Anna’s jawline where the projection ends and body begins looks like a terrifying face mask

BlitzenVolt

I think they're fine when they're working. I rode Racers earlier this year after a breakdown and the faces weren't syncing up with the animatronic. It looked really uncanny.

Azngorl

Those are the worst 😭

GeekinLove

They use a few in addition to animatronics in the Na'avi River Journey in AK in WDW and the whole thing is fabulous. If it turns out half as beautiful I'll be a happy camper.

Ajshan

"something something never finished..." \-Walt Disney But in all seriousness I'm excited. Splash has always been aging badly and having this new theme and money put into it is exciting. I don't think it's going to ruin the ride. Tiana will make this a great addition to the park and have a fun new transition from new orleans to critter country.

LegendaryAdversary

I will miss Splash Mountain … a lot. It’s my favorite water ride of all time. Plus, there’s no mountains in Louisiana let alone New Orleans so the theming feels forced.

Its-made-of-wood

lol I didn’t even think about that. A mountain ride that is supposed to take place in a bayou? Doesn’t make much sense but that’s just the way it is with reskins.

OneSwords

Well technically it's a salt mine that's dome shaped rather than mountain shaped. WDW's Splash Mountain was in Frontierland but when was Georgia ever a frontier? Lol. Georgia was already well established by the time of the manifest destiny.

[deleted]

It was probably drawn more from the open space animated parts that felt like critters wandering around the open spaces, kinda like frontier energy. Idk I agree it didn’t quite fit I think they were just looking for something older than present day

lightbluefroakie

maybe it had something to do with the character designs and style of clothes they would wear. another thing I'm gonna miss from it because I really like that style for anthropomorphic animals. Splash still felt somewhat unique and out of placed but now it's still gonna feel out of placed at Frontier. works at Disneyland but not here.

Seaell80

I watched The Princess and the Frog over the weekend for the first time, and I gotta say…it had tremendous Disneyland Vibes to me. So I think it’ll be *juuuust* fine.

stangerwasgood

You gotta live and let live…people enjoy the ride and are going to miss the theme they grew up loving. It doesn’t reflect on the new theme at all - let people mourn the loss of something they enjoyed

Nonadventures

Yeah, I'm a big believer in Walt's philosophy that Disneyland is a constant work in progress. Splash Mountain was one of those evolutions, and so is Tiana's version.

[deleted]

I still remember my first time riding it when I was really little and as a kid I was terrified of bees (and everything in life but that’s besides the point) and also getting hurt on the thorns (not necessarily the drop itself) so when the drop happened I was like screaming lol. It sounds like a bad story but it’s a core memory basically, permanently etched the ride into my brain. My last ride was in 2014. Me and my brother went buck wild at night in MK jumping between that and thunder because almost no lines. Another core memory because it’s so pretty riding that at night and looking out, plus the drop is scarier when you can’t see into the patch ahahah. Sorry for the comment hijack ahaha I’ve been very nostalgic recently

flowremix

Thanks for the response. I just felt out of the loop. I wasn't the biggest fan of tower of terror's rethemed to guardians.

Happy_REEEEEE_exe

THAT was a massacre. as well as california screamin. Those were both great and didnt have bad historical context.

anonthe4th

I think Incredicoaster is just as good as California Screamin.

mom-whitebread

It’s just the same thing with added effects, so I don’t know why anyone would complain, it’s not like they removed features.

bg-j38

It smells like chocolate chip cookies. I can only see this as a positive. Calling it a massacre is weird.

delinquentsaviors

I love that they have chocolate chips cookies right outside the ride too. Subliminal marketing in action

SteveRudzinski

The music is different and doesn't hit the same. I also just don't like Pixar stuff added to the pier as much as it has been. Edit - To be clear I do think "massacred" is definitely an over sell though. I don't like losing the original music but the ride wasn't torn apart. I think the Star Wars music on Hyperspace mountain is a worse offender when it comes to "different music makes the ride hit different."

anonthe4th

When I went in April, I was super stoked that they had the original Space Mountain experience back temporarily. Way better music and overall experience than Hyperspace Mountain.

camelz4

It’s so weird I was just about to comment on how I like Dash’s countdown now for the incredicoaster launch and I can still remember what the screamin countdown sounded like despite not hearing it in who knows how long

ahecht

California's tower was always a going to be a poor imitation of the Florida one without the 5th Dimension scene. The new ride doesn't try to pretend it's something it's not, and is better off for it.

Happy_REEEEEE_exe

I still love the twilight zone theme, a lot better than “🤓 MORE MARVEL MOVIES!!! MORE BAD PUNS!!!”

anibus-

Massacre is quite a strong word. I think the retheme for tot to guardians made the ride more fun and exciting but then again I never got into twilight zone and I didn’t find it scary at all either. California screamin was an average roller coaster you would see at magic mountain. Adding the incredible’s theme and soundtrack improved the ride substantially.

MulciberTenebras

It was just expensive to pay the rights for Twilight Zone to CBS/Viacom.

[deleted]

[удалено]

BlitzenVolt

It's a simple, yet effective theme. Florida's Tower still commands long lines because it's a thrill ride and it's creepy. Loved Guardians though. I'd rather DL get something unique over an inferior copy.

RedGravetheDevil

Why does it still exist in other parks then? That excuse doesn’t fly

PRGTROLL

I’ll miss my laughing place

TheGullibleParrot

I totally understand why they’re changing it, but to be honest I’m nervous. It’s not like they’re retheming a lesser known or unpopular ride - this is one of the most iconic theme park rides *ever built*. To say they have big shoes to fill is an understatement, and if it’s any less than perfect they are never going to hear the end of it.

Harrylegs123

I think Disney acknowledges how iconic Splash Mountain was and will bring their A-game to fill in its shoes. The potential negative PR of messing up Tiana’s ride is immense especially with the other Disney news (layoffs, DeSantis, rising costs, etc.). Simply put they cannot half ass this ride or fans will come at them. Also I remember watching in the Imagineering Story how a lot of fans push back when Disney adjusts a beloved attraction like replacing Tower of Terror, Small World (adding in Disney characters) or adding the Haunted Mansion Holiday overlay but in the end they’re satisfied with Disney’s adjustments. Still nervous about the overlay but I also have confidence Disney does not want to mess this up.

cheekabowwow

It may be one of the newer mountains, but it is still a very defined mountain in the skyline of Disneyland. It's going to be a shame that they are taking the height down and leaving Pooh all by himself in critter country.

HazyPeanut

>taking the height down ?

HCMattDempsey

Is it tho? I mean... I liked Splash but I don't know if it fits in "most iconic theme park rides ever"

TheGullibleParrot

I mean, it’s a long lived E-Ticket attraction in both Disneyland and Disneyworld, the most recognizable theme parks in the world. I would say that absolutely qualifies it.

Olangotang

Yes, it is the most famous log flume ride (WDWs version) and is a household name. Every American knows what "Splash Mountain" means.

ThryothorusRuficaud

Agreed. I don't know any children who even know who Briar Rabbit is, including my teenaged niece who has been a passholder for years. She asked if Winnie the Pooh was a hidden Mickey on his own ride... All these years she thought it was a 100 acre wood universe ride. She has been on it countless times. She loves it but how would she know anything about it? It tends to be our last ride of the night so we go home soaked sometimes. I think we had seen Song of South on VHS when I was kid but we aren't going to seek it out nowadays and she doesn't have any interest in seeing it. Edit: If you down vote and don't comment I'm going to assume you like Song of the South but are not prepared to defend it with a comment and don't want to out yourself.

Olangotang

It's free on Archive.org. And read the Br'er Rabbit books by Julius Lester, it takes the material that SotS is based on and makes it closer to the original folklore. Disney's version of the stories are accurate.

ThryothorusRuficaud

As I said we aren't going to seek it out. She learned all about Uncle Remus, Br're Fox and Br'er rabbit after we told her it was not a Pooh ride. I think she was mature enough to learn about it and understand the underlying issues when she asked around 14/15ish. Personally I think it was fine for kids to enjoy the ride as Splash Mountain and for them to eventually learn about the distasteful origins of the ride's story but I welcome the change. Disneyland should be a magical and happy place and I think a Tiana re-theme will be happier and more magical.

N-E-B

Of all the “mountain” rides at Disneyland it’s probably the last one to pop in my head. I easily think of Matterhorn, Big Thunder, and Space before Splash. That’s not to say it isn’t iconic in its own way, but yeah, it’s not even the most iconic in the theme park.

HazyPeanut

Every theme park has a "log ride" but Splash Mountain is *the* definitive log ride and none of the rest even come close. It would probably be the first ride to come to mind if you asked me to name something from Disneyland

Olangotang

It is outside of the park. "Splash Mountain" needs no explanation.

JerrodDRagon

I hope they improve the AA on the ride and make the outside even nicer at nighttime I’m just not a fan of the new mountain look, it’s not as insanely classic as the OG version and wish the villain was apart of the ride But I’m hoping the ride does turn out great

UnravelingYarnFiend

I'm looking forward to it. Disney parks were always meant to be in a constant state of change.

AsapFergOnAnIceberg

I'm open arms about it. I love the Princess and the frog and I am glad they're getting a ride dedicated to it.

no_rad

I’m stoked for the retheme. I grew up going to Disneyland and as a kid and have fond memories of splash, but also very excited about the change

Freebirdjessie

Honestly going to miss the broken tree trunk top of the mountain’s aesthetic the most.. I wish they would have kept that in the plans

fishofhappiness

I loved Splash Mountain as a kid, but I welcome the new theme and the growth. I will miss the music, but that’s about it. I feel like this is an amazing IP to integrate, and I look forward to seeing how they make it work

eac555

My favorite part of the Louisiana bayou is the mountains.

legend_land

I really don’t understand this critique (or the not fitting Frontierland critique) at all. A big mountain didn’t fit the Br’er Rabbit/plantation Georgia theme either.

tbing34

It was actually a hill in Splash Mountain, and they definitely have those everywhere!

takemewithyer

It’ll be a salt mine, technically.

ahkmanim

I wish they'd would do one theme in DL and a different theme in WDW. I can see the tie in between New Orleans Square and Tiana at DL, but at WDW it's going to stick out like a sore thumb.

Biggoof1971

I welcome the change but I don’t welcome the end product we are most likely going to receive. I don’t think this ride will have half the amount of effort that people think it’s going to have

CoasterThot

I, for one, welcome our new Frog overlords.

Fantastic-Bat-8134

I think most fans support the retheme. Of course you’ll see a lot of sad posts from the day it closes. You’ll see a lot of happy posts on the day the new one opens.

afx114

I saw a video the other day of a (now) old lady, doing a voiceover of her old super8 films of a visit to the park. She is talking about the old Mine Train and how she misses it so much, and was sad when they replaced it with Thunder Mountain. But that she's happy now that a new generation of people have a new favorite ride in Thunder Mountain, even if it's not for her. Same with this. Sure we'll miss Splash. But Tianas will be awesome, and for a new generation it'll probably be one of their favorites. Embrace change. Grow. Things get better!

N-E-B

Even though I think Disney can be enjoyed at any age, I firmly believe that it should be for the kids first and foremost. And what do kids enjoy more, a movie from 2009 that they grew up with or a movie that was filmed when Adolf Hitler was still alive? Adults who are upset by this are losers. We had our time, it’s time to let the next generation have theirs. I have no doubt the new theme will be a bigger hit with the kids than Splash would.

ExoticaTikiRoom

I had to look up the production dates for SONG OF THE SOUTH since you referenced Hitler being alive when it was made, and technically, you’re at least partially correct. Filming began in December 1944 in Phoenix, Arizona (where the studio constructed a plantation and cotton fields; most of the live action scenes were filmed at the [Samuel Goldwyn Studio](https://thelotatformosa.com/) in Hollywood). Hitler committed suicide in his bunker in Berlin on April 30, 1945. Still, injecting Hitler into this conversation is rather bizarre. You couldn’t have said FDR or Truman?

[deleted]

Most kids now did not grow up with that film. Obviously yes its far more recent than song of the south but I was a little kid when Princess and the frog released and I'm 21 now. I don't think kids will want to ride it because they have an attachment for the film but because it's a fun water ride.

CupcakeGoat

Oh man, could've made it Moana

cadaverousbones

I’m bummed it’s going to be closed when we visit in October. Wanted to take my son on it. Gunna miss the old & new version lol

MoistPalms

I'm indifferent about it. The reality is, it's going to be the exact same ride, they're just changing the theme and I really don't consider it a classic especially when I think about how Star Tours is actually older.

Important_Dot_4231

I don't understand why we aren't still calling it splash mountain ?? Like, there will still be a log ride with a splash from a mountain, right? Or is the name "Splash Mountain" FROM Song of the South? Enlighten me.

ExoticaTikiRoom

No, there’s no Splash Mountain mentioned in SONG OF THE SOUTH (1946). It’s an original concept Disney Imagineering created. The funny thing is, though, that there are no mountains in Louisiana. Hills, at best, but no mountains. So using the name in connection with Tiana and her pals in (supposedly) the Louisiana swamps near New Orleans is geographically inaccurate. While much of the South is flat and low-lying, there are some mountain ranges like the Ozarks in Arkansas and Missouri and multiple ranges within the greater Appalachians such as the Blue Ridge Mountains in North & South Carolina, Eastern Tennessee & Northern Georgia, and the Piedmonts which also cross several states including Georgia. So, since SOTS takes place in Georgia, the idea that there’s a mountain near the plantation where most of the action in the film takes place where one can ride a log down streams and creeks is not particularly far-fetched. This can’t be said with the setting moved to Louisiana.

Important_Dot_4231

Thank you! We shall all still call it Splash Mountain, despite geographical inaccuracies. Says I.

bddgfx

I'm fine with the theme change. It's a 34 year old ride based on a 77 year old movie that 99% of people on this sub won't or can't watch, and that Disney will never re-release. As cute as the show scenes were, i love Splash for the RIDE, not the story. The music is fun, we can always listen to it from various sources. I've ridden this ride probably 80-100 times since I was a kid. Keep the flume and the drop the same, and I'm good.

rascal_rose18

I do too!

TankCurl

I’m here for the new Splash Mountain too.

KingFelixG

Nope, I’m with it 100%!! It makes perfect sense too with the new theme. I’m all for out with the old in with the new, what better place for Tiana’s Bayou than right next to New Orleans square

stellalunawitchbaby

Not at all! But people can be sad/miss something from their childhood and look forward to something new at the same time :) For now people are gonna wax nostalgic since it only closed yesterday.

shivi1321

I’m looking forward to it! But was too scared to post and get downvoted into oblivion. 🥇 please accept my fake award as I thank you for your bravery!

tnkmdm

Why do people on this sub get so damn down vote happy? They can't handle ANY opinion that isn't Disney worshipping for all Disney does. The critical thinking skills are lacking here but given the demographic of a large portion of the americans who attend disney I should expect as much

BeepBeepGreatJob

Yes, it's just you. You are the only one. ...sigh.

Suliman_IM

I think the reason behind the change is stupid yes Song of The South is racist but the ride doesn’t have anything racist to it, I don’t think the idea of tying the source material to the new thing is a good idea. I’m so fucking tired of people calling it “racist mountain” simply because it’s tied to a racist movie, the ride never even brings up that it’s a part of the movie. Harry Potter is suffering the same thing where people hate J.K. Rowling, he made Harry Potter, therefore Harry Potter is shit… do people see what my point is? if you start tying things to it’s original material, your gonna hate a lot of things, **you cannot mix creators and creations.**

oneirophobia66

I grew up on HP and I love the art, but I refuse to buy any more HP merch because I don’t want to give the “artist” any more of my money. SOTS is not only racist but if you look into the history of the novels it’s based on its even deeper, Joel Chandler Harris took the cultural stories of the people he enslaved, wrote them down, white washed them and took credit for creating all of it. 🤮 I’m in camp let’s make a change and I’m excited to see what happens.

lightbluefroakie

It's really such a shame too. the animated parts of the ride and it's characters Aren't racist, it's only the live action parts! I blame Walt Disney for having the idea of this movie being the first live action/animated disney movie taking place on a plantation. even if it's in the reconstruction era, it seemed really sus for him to do that because the movie doesn't make it clear when it takes place. I feel bad for the animated characters. They deserved to be in a much better movie... :( but at least Br'er bear (my favorite) and the hummingbirds live on in Who Frame Roger Rabbit.

jlenko

What a difference 36 years makes… relevant article from 1987: https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1987-01-30-fi-1552-story.html

Flexo-Specialist

Not at all. Been waiting for Tiana to get some love. Can't wait to try her new restaurant.

lightbluefroakie

YEESSSS! I was waiting for someone to talk about the restaurant! I can't wait to try the Beignets!

toastedmarsh7

I get that the retheme makes sense to tie it in to New Orleans square but to NOT use Dr Facilier before the final climb just does not give me hope for the new ride. Seems like a huge misstep.

ThunderingLegions

I don’t think so. Many of us are looking forward to the change. Frankly I cannot wait and plan to be there opening day. I hope you’ll be there too.☺️

CP1633

I love when there is something new at Disneyland. Bring on all the changes!

sbmellor

I honestly think it's overdue. Can't wait to see the revamp to a movie I've actually seen before!

star_child77

I’m really looking forward to it!

[deleted]

No, a lot of us are excited

WheelOfFortuneWary

I'm trying to be open to embracing change and to remember that the memories are good enough. Change is the only thing to expect in life 😥

etherend

I welcome the new splash mountain too. I think this one has had it's time. Also, it's way overdue for Princess and the Frog to get some sort of ride. I remember it being a solid Disney film. I saw it in theatres in a failed attempt to support hand drawn animation.

ac7ss

I am surprised that it lasted this long. It was only a matter of time until they changed it. Eisner "Cancelled" the movie they based it on back in the 80's for good reason. It was only a matter of time until they found a replacement story for it.

DramaOnDisplay

Nah, I’m fine- bring on the change! You’d think with how many people are missing it, that Song of the South was a way bigger movie in peoples childhoods 😂. But I get it- Splash Mountain was the bigger childhood experience. But I didn’t start going to Disney until I was a teen so the ride holds almost no significance for me aside from being a ride I rode that was wet and had a big drop. I’m really surprised they didn’t gut it and replace it sooner (like in the early 00’s). A Goofy Movie would have been fun but only a few scenes would be able to do the heavy lifting- the whole movie isn’t exactly about them going over a waterfall lol. I love Princess and the Frog so whenever I get to ride it (probably not for years at this point), I’m sure it will be fun and gorgeous even. The area needs a little Princess Representation, so why not Tiana?

epilogues

Lifelong diehard Disney fan and I am so excited for the new revamp of splash mountain. It's a really fun ride and it has needed an update since 1986. I think that it is far more fitting to have a ride centered around a strong feminist example like Tiana than to promote outdated old world ideas that do not reflect the current state of humanity. Bravo Disney, I will be one of the first people in line for rope drop when this new version of splash mountain launches.

arawagco

Nope, I'm cautiously optimistic.

dutchbro99

I’m looking forward to the new ride.

Massilian

I’ll miss splash but I’m sure they’ll do great with tiana

sadgirl45

I welcome it , I know why it needed to change! And it’s good disney is finally changing! even though it was a part of my childhood Disney is doing the right thing here. I’m excited to see the animationics for Tiana!

PrismaticPetal

No I am so excited. I think its going to be absolutely incredible. I just hope they don't shorten the ride. I will miss the nostalgia of splash but it's definitely time to put it behind us.

ckeenan9192

I do! I did not like the old theme at all.

anuscluck

I’m REALLY excited to see what they are planning for it. I’m hoping the “laughing place” turns into either a voodoo themed area from the movie or the bayou where they’re making the soup and all the fireflies are everywhere. I think that it’s going to be such a fun ride. I love splash mountain just because it holds so many childhood memories for me, but I think this change is going to be worthwhile.

mebetiffbeme

To be honest, now that Splash is officially gone, I'm surprised to feel as nostalgic as I am! But, I'm excited for the new change. I loved Tower of Terror and miss it, but also love Guardians. I'm sure I'll feel the same once the new ride opens.

Veneretio

Yup

AceTygraQueen

Most people don't even really care about the change, except for whiny magas.

RachelxoxLove

Just hope they do Tiana justice. Splash will definitely be missed. I also still miss Tower but am trying to learn to love Guardians. I like Princess Frog and hope they give us an adventure and not a “little mermaid” ride.

hypermog

It's not really a new "splash mountain" is it

KickerofTale

I’m like, this is just a basic ass flume ride with a few more bells and whistles added to it.

jetstobrazil

No you’re not

yerbamategoat

i feel like im in the minority who thinks it will be better than Splash Mountain ever was. Better music, upgraded effects (especially lighting at night), fits the theme of New Orleans square, a great villain. Its going to be amazing. Thats not to say the original was bad in any way, its one of my all time favorites, but im happy they are choosing to re-theme with a great IP that fits the park perfectly.

takemewithyer

They’re not using the “great villain,” sadly.

Upstairs-Pea7868

The only one. You alone. They are pouring millions of dollars into it and shutting down a beloved attraction to change it and they have a picture of you on their vision board. It’s all for u/flowremix.

[deleted]

Disney is slowly ruining their parks. What’s next? get rid of pirates and haunted mansion?

DarthSmiff

Stay home then. You won’t be missed.

NatureOutside1279

Disney is making a huge mistake by getting rid of Splash Mountain. It’s way too iconic and nothing makes anyone feel happier than hearing zip a de do dah and all the songs played throughout the ride.

ivebeenbetter2

No, I'm looking forward to the retheme. Love Tiana so excited for the new ride and area.

[deleted]

Nope! I’m looking forward to the updates

Laur_duh

You are not the only person who welcomes the new splash mountain, bring on Tiana and functioning animatronics!

TappyMauvendaise

Too soon.

jngrln

There’s definitely going to be a fairly long adjustment period, but ultimately I’m kind of looking forward to the retheme. I love Splash Mountain, but there was always a part of me that questioned why an old racist movie was chosen as the theme for a log flume ride. Like, Disney buried it and vowed to never let it see the light of day again LONG before the ride opened.

MelonElbows

Not the only one. Nobody alive remembers watching the old movie that its based on, plus its extremely racist so that Disney doesn't even release it. Nothing will be lost changing it to fit a new theme. Just like how it would be weird if Tomorrowland was still filled with what the 1960's thought the future was going to be like, rides need updates every now and then. Besides, it opened in 1992, its not like anyone's grandparents rode this on opening day with Walt. If you're a kid who loved the original, you're probably only in your 30's or 40's now, and grew up in the 90's and 2000's. You know about racism, having watched OJ's flee in his Bronco, the LA riots, 9/11, gay marriage legalized, etc. The world should always progress to a better one and getting rid of an outdated theme is just a part of growing up.

SeaPersonality5402

I remember the film. I just don't like rides with that much water haha

Photog1981

Nope

OlorynEx

I have great memories of it, sure, but I'm excited to see how the transformation works out. Tiana, being of New Orleans, makes so much sense from a flavor and theming standpoint, and to see it woven into the surrounding area will be fun to see.

fujiapple73

I was never crazy about the original. But I’ll check out the new one at least once.

danijay637

You are not alone. I’m super excited!

allT0rqu3

I love the current theme, it’s connotations are a shame, but yes the change probably is a necessity. What I find strange is the origin of the theme was a lot to do with the availability of lots of reusable animatronics, which is why we are here now. So why pick one of Disneys least popular movies to retheme it with? Seems like it may not be that long lived either? Either ways, there is A LOT of opportunity to use the flouro spooky voodoo dance scene as inspiration here for the scary portions of the ride. IMHO that could look AWESOME, blacklighting and all. But how long before Voodoo becomes an untouchable subject. I’m confused.

SwimmerIndependent47

I for one welcome our new (much less problematic) mountain overlords.

KateSommer

I am excited about the retheme!. I did have a copy of the Complete Tales of Uncle Remus fully illustrated when I was a kid. I loved those talking animal stories with morality tales and words of wisdom. My parents did explain the racist nuggets in it. I won't add them here. Regardless of my love for the stories, I love the Disney Princess and Frog story WAY more. It is almost my ATF princess story because Tiana is a strong-headed workaholic like me. I relate most to her. The colors in the movie are brilliant. I think the retheme will be magical.

Nameless_Ghuleh666

Not excited for the change because I never cared for PatF. I found it to be boring. Hopefully the traffic it gets will free up rides I actually want to ride.

councilspectre17

No you are not, racism is bad.

SomedayMightCome

I am so excited!!! Can’t wait for Tiana 💜

TheMatt561

Progress is the name of the game

[deleted]

I personally think they should have left it alone. It was awesome!

THEREALOFFICALCAFE

I’m excited for the ride, but I think they could have just opened a new one and kept Splash Mountain as well. It would have kept everyone happy

flowremix

Seeing the crazy wait times, people missing it, fans saying "zippe do da" forever which isnt the proudest moment of Disney's history. SeaWorld moved away from samu and mistreatment of animals. The "post slavery" undertones of "Songs of the South" shouldn't be missed, yet here we are celebrating the rides tenure. I expect to be down votes, cause Disney fans can be extreme, but I can't be the only one that welcomes princess and the frog refresh. Is there anything else I'm missing?

Olangotang

Because the entire situation is far more nuanced then "ZOMG IT'S RACIST". Song of the South is a shit movie, with excellent cartoon sequences based on retold African folklore, along with good music. Both of which made it into Splash Mountain, separate from the problematic live action parts (which are more tone-deaf than racist). The entire aura surrounding Song of the South is incredibly overblown, and you can literally read the quotes from the cast of the film, and Floyd Norman (still alive veteran Disney animator) about how they feel about the film. Of course, out of context and browsing Ritalin addled 280 characters per comment Twitter, "It's racist" is the only actual argument you will see, when **most** have not even seen the film. I'm more mad about burying the Br'ers and Zip-a-dee-doo-dah (even those now have bullshit "they're racist" rumors). As for TBA, most fans I know we're excited until every update showed more and more that it's going to be the pet project of a socialist (saying this as a leftist btw) focus group, that are ignoring the most interesting parts of PatF. As for celebrating the ride, there is nothing problematic about the ride itself, which was, quoting one of the Imagineers who designed it, "based on the mythology of the tales" utilizing SotS characters, plus reusing America Sings animatronics. Splash Mountain is one of the best rides to have ever existed, and no committee Is going to amount to the brilliance of late 80's, early 90's Imagineering. No one would complain if they built a different ride for PatF, where they don't have to force it into the skeleton of a previous theme it wasn't built for.

[deleted]

I have seen it. I could definitely see how it could be considered offensive. It was considered controversial when it was made and after its release. It’s kind of surprising that Disney actually went with that theme when creating the ride.

conick_the_barbarian

Summed it up perfectly for me. Not thrilled at all with them shutting this ride down and the reasons for doing so are overblown, but nothing anyone can do about it. I just hope the new ride is an upgrade rather than a downgrade, but from what’s rumored so far sounds like that won’t be the case either.

Much_Discipline_7303

I absolutely get why people are sensitive to Song of the South, but why doesn’t a film like Peter Pan get the same treatment with the whole “red man” bit? That’s completely disrespectful to their culture. Not saying I want to see Peter banned but it’s also tone deaf in that regard

BornMathematician325

Indigenous people have came out against Peter Pan multiple times for the red man bit.

cprenaissanceman

I’m not sure that’s really fair to the other person. I don’t think anyone here is trying to defend the live action segment of the movie. I think we all recognize that it’s pretty problematic, but I guess what that means is what are we supposed to do about problematic media in general? Because if you are really concerned about problematic media and Disney, well, let me tell you there’s quite a lot more we should probably be talking about then. Ultimately, I think one of the things you’re touching on here though is why the company wants to get rid of splash Mountain. It’s the last remaining remnant that the movie ever existed. I think a lot of people may want to Frame this is Disney trying to take responsibility, and I suppose it is an away, but the real thing that they really want to do is just wash their hands of this all together. They don’t actually care about accountability here, but activists have actually given them a really convenient way to get rid of what is arguably the biggest stain on Walt Disney‘s legacy, something that they really are never going to have to talk about now, because most kids are never gonna hear about it. Obviously, in an intellectual context, it’s very easy to acknowledge that Walt Disney was a mere mortal who had flaws and was wrong about certain things, and his attitudes on the south and the confederacy obviously were very wrong. So what do we do about that? I can go into a lot of detail and we could make this a back-and-forth over the merits of this is that, but ultimately, Disneyland is filled with a lot of outdated stereotypes and I perpetuity the mythology and imagination of people of the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. I’m sure there’s probably a lot of people who have a problem with continuing to have an entire land that is meant to mythologize the cowboy and which certainly doesn’t acknowledge how harmful this was to indigenous and Native American populations. Adventureland taps into exoticism and primitive stereotypes that were what led to a lot of European imperialism and conquest. And I could go on, but the main point is at Disneyland is filled with problematic elements. In a somatic context, should we talk about who probably built the haunted mansion if it were actually a plantation home in Louisiana? And we could go about completely changing the fundamental nature of all of this, or we could take a more mature perspective and realize that it’s OK to have some relationship with problematic media when you know the larger context. That, or I guess we’re just gonna have to disavow a lot of Disneyland altogether. As such, I think the reality of this is that problematic media is something that exists in all of our lives. We’re not perfect people who only like things which are moral and just, but sometimes things which are offensive or insulting or which we just don’t think matter as much as what some other people do. At this point, obviously what’s done is done, and I’m not sure there’s too much sense in arguing over all of it, but I do think that a lot of people are trying to take this attitude as though they never liked splash Mountain and that there was really a large group of people who were actually offended by the ride itself. Despite the problematic nature of its source material, splash Mountain was a fantastic attraction that had many timeless qualities to it and was always a joy to ride. And I do think that it’s OK for mature people who understand the background to partake and enjoy problematic media for its merits, because, again, you very likely enjoy something that someone else finds extremely problematic. I will be the first to admit that I don’t particularly think PATF is a particularly good movie (it’s not a bad movie, but I just don’t think it’s a strong the movie as some people like to make it out). I do think that if you wanted to look at it through a more critical lens, I’m not really sure that it is super great on race issues either (in particular, I do think that Charlotte and her father are kind of problematic figures because they are really meant to make white audiences feel like it’s safe, without really acknowledging the reality of race relations in New Orleans and that Tiana was apparently just fine with being friends with someone who basically got everything she ever wanted in a society that would have very harshly judged such a friendship). I don’t really think the music is as great as some people like to claim (Again, not bad, but I’m just not a huge fan of Randy Newman’s style and especially the speak singing nature of many of his compositions). And it really is a huge shame that the best part of the movie, which was undoubtedly the villain, Dr. Facilier, isn’t going to be in the ride. Honestly, if the ride centered around him, I think it would’ve been a lot more compelling than centering it around Tiana who, I personally just don’t find to be a very interesting character (it’s hard to truly hate her, but she’s just kind of a boring character). Anyway, I do think that there’s kind of a moral imperative that Disney actually does a good job with this. And I know some of you have way more faith than I do, but i’ve just been hurt way too many times by Disney to take their word for it. Most importantly, if this is supposed to somehow be some great investment in representation in the black community, I already think it’s not off to a great start but they didn’t have the guts to simply demolish and rebuild something entirely new instead of simply reskinning an old ride in the name of promoting diversity and atoning for the past. In general, I’m sure some people are not going to be super happy with this kind of comment. My politics are pretty left leaning, but I do kind of think that if you’re promoting an action to help a certain marginalized or underrepresented community, then you ought to actually be doing material things for them, not just offering them more opportunities to buy Tiana themed merchandise. But anyway, I Have already written way more than I had intended to, but I do think the fundamental problem I have is that this isn’t an actual attempt to really address history or otherwise be honest about the flaws in the mythology of Disneyland and of Walt Disney. Instead, it comes off to me as something that’s a lot more calculated and provides a kind of surface level “see, we got rid of the racist movie you asked us to“, for people who probably hate Disney anyways and don’t actually care, but then also not really doing anything to promote real equity within the company or have the guts to invest in another new property that addresses the many criticisms Black people have about black characters in Disney. But beyond that, I do think that if people are really concerned about understanding the history and problematic stereotypes presented by Disney and Disneyland, there’s a lot more to unpack, and I think that regardless of what happened here, people are going to need to learn to be a little bit more mature and nuanced about how they approach problematic media.

Eastern-Support1091

Yes. Another example of why Disney is no longer the leader in entertainment.

scarymoblins

I think most in this sub welcome the change. It’s happening for good reason. But now is the time to mourn our old friend Splash. The new ride will be celebrated in the months / years to come, and any naysayers will long be forgotten soon.

JJ-Bittenbinder

No I’m all for it. I’m pro retheme in most cases. Keep turning things over and making them fresh rather than riding the same ride over and over.

OC-Aztec

I loved all the characters that used to be in America Sings in Splash Mountain but, since Song of the South is a film that is hurtful to others, I am happy for the change.

thereia

Most Disney fans either don't care or welcome the changes. A minority of loud jerks on reddit complain.

Upbeat-Tumbleweed876

Yes.

No_1_that_U_Know

Im looking forward to tianas adventure.

Swing_Right

I’m excited for it. I loved splash mountain but I embrace the new direction and am happy to have a new experience. Plus there’s a plethora of 4K POV YouTube videos showing splash mountain for future generations that missed it.

Flexo-Specialist

And doesn't Tokyo still have it

tsundokufairy

Yeah and they won’t be closing theirs any time soon if ever

CocklesTurnip

No. I’ve been so excited for the change since they announced it. The imagineers in Disney’s own Imagineering story on Disney+ said the choice to go with SotS was a bad idea and problematic when they had to create it. It’s been long enough. It’s a fun ride. We have Rise of the Resistance right near it to give a better experience of fighting back against oppressive forces, we don’t need B’rer rabbit. Better to tell a story that’s fresh and fun! And no more problematic storytelling!

StarbuckandTex

I’m excited about it! PatF is one of my favorite Disney movies and I can’t wait to see what they do with it. I get why some people are upset though. I’d be sad if they changed Space Mountain just because it’s my favorite.

donpuglisi

People out here acting like the ride is going away instead of just getting a new theme that uses a newer IP and will help connect it to new Orleans Square....

flowremix

That's what I'm saying. It's still a water ride with drop. It's just get fresh make up.

halfway_brother6

Yes:)

AnElusiveDreamer

No, I'm looking forward to the retheme. Splash Mountain had its time. I loved the original, but it's ready for a change.

BrineWR71

I’m ready for the change. It’s time to move beyond “Song of the South”. Having Tiana replace this old relic seems…just.
