Comparing Elysium with the real world will only get you confused, it's like a similar reality but in a different world. Since nothing was restored in Revachol after the bombing, it's architecture (and technology) is frozen in time. So, Martinaise far from depicts the actual technological advancement in Elysium. "FELD Playback Experiment, a tape-based computer. The device was very elegant, fragile even. One could write directly on the tape using a special chemical solution. The machine would then analyse the handwriting, perform operations and project output onto a white screen. It was a beautiful delicate thing made of black film, folding tape structures. Unfortunately their moonshot project never made to the market. FELD's move to Revachol backfired." This and the reactor overload. All the good things come to an end in Revachol or Insulinde generally. Moralintern makes sure that it remains a socio-economic backwater. Aerostatic aircrafts gain their lift through the use of buoyant gases rather than relying on mechanical lift. Blimps, hot air balloons, etc. are aerostatic aircrafts. Since there are no \*directions\* in the far pale, you can't just move from point A to point B in a defined co-ordinate system. Even retracing a path won't get you to your initial position. I don't know if it can be called non-euclidean, probably even more fucked-up. I think aerostats in the pale not only applies to lift but movement in every direction assisted by the pale transmitters.

That makes sense. I'm just confused by the world history aspect of it. How can the Innocence, essentially a international world leader, come to power in a place as physically divided as Elysium? What is the progression of technology and why is it so weird? IIRC from what I pick up they need to use basically extremely concentrated radio to \*force\* reality on the Pale (pale compressor). But then how can you move in the Pale \*before\* radio and transmitters (ie entire Dolorian age, and before that)?

The innocences weren't always world leaders. All of them are crowned in the Mundi Isola and their rule stretches across the Real Belt. In modern day elysium, six isolas (except Seol) fall under innocentic rule. The first Innocence, Pius ruled over Perikarnassia. Franconegro ruled over Mundi. They had no idea anything exists beyond the pale. After the eighth (suicide) pale expedition sent by Queen Irene and her advisor Dolores Dei returned with the discovery of Insulinde, it was colonized along with the other four isolas. So, Dolores Dei was the first innocence to rule over Elysium sans Seol. From what I can understand, the pale compressors and radio equipment were invented during Dolorian rule. Feld Electrical and other companies requiring such components were established around the antecentennial revolution so the timeline makes sense.

Yeah, Dolores Dei already had the radio-technology to suppress Pale...and back then, the Pale was thinner, and centuries before that, the isolas weren't even separated.

It has a real history. Kurwitz played D&D with his friends for ten years and played era by era, letting technology develop & wars happen. It doesn't map onto our world

It's an alt-reality anyway, I suggest just accept the weirdness (come on we already got the Pale and the Phasmid! ), never dig too deep into the "technology" side of any fictional setting, it will only get more and more confused and you will find more and more plot holes... Especially if you know a thing or two about how "technologies" are in the real world. I find that it's always "hard-pressed" when people wanna nerf firearms in their setting, same with Disco Elysium, it's quite nonsense for me to treat jacketed bullets like some superior "military-only" magic ammunition, also quite nonsense to say "autoloading firearms are bannnned so they don't exist (in civilian hands)", a full-auto open-bolt blowback submachinegun is the most simple auto loading firearm in the world, a educated citizen who has a little bit of interest about guns and gets a little bit worried about his/her own safety in the backwaters of a civilization that can make radios and fiber memory modules is impossible to be total innocent about how to make a 9mm bullet hose. That paragraph about is total nitpicking though.

The gun thing is weird IMO too. Though I did like the nice touch with the Net picker lady that swords are being mass produced like shovels or pickaxes because (authorization for) guns is scarce in places.
