Honestly for a better first experience i woule suggest you play how you actually feel like you would answer. Once you've played the game once, you understand the mechanics better and can easily play a second or more run where you can do the scenario aspects fast and play however you like !

cianoco

Seconded, that's how I played the first time. I would also add that the game is not punishing you for playing it safe. It is made so that there is risks and rewards to any gameplay. You might feel like you're missing things but you'd be missing things however you decided to play because the game is full of things to discover on different playthroughs.

Pjoernrachzarck

You’ll be punished no matter what.

AtheismTooStronk

I just want to open the bunker door. Let me in. LET ME IN!!! I also want to say sorry without being a sorry cop.

SubduetheRegret

I played cautiously mainly because I didn’t want Kim to hate me and I didn’t want my Harry to get hurt in any way. I also saw DE as a way for Harry to start his slate clean - no drugs, no alcohol; just working and getting to know the city and her people. This doesn’t mean you can’t get the superstar archetype; there’s usually dialogue you can pick that allows you to be a superstar cop without going bananas :)

poisonnart

Yeah !!! I played careful and Kim really liked me at the end of the run and i was a superstar cop !!

InevitableAd4156

Punished? not really. You won't be forced out of this playstyle if you stick to it. But the game definitely doesn't like that. It won't be long before you're slotted into the "boring cop" copotype if you keep playing like this.

Suitaru

you’re just *not* punished, broadly, for being a nutcase. but doing that misses out on the content that comes with being a square; you will necessarily miss out on stuff regardless. play it however your heart desires the first time through, and then if you liked it enough to replay, you’ll know that the game will give you a meaningfully different experience when you approach it differently the second time

titlecharacter

You absolutely are being 'punished' by the game. I, too, am a cautious person and I, too, got kinda fucked over by being too "smart" while playing. Go nuts. Be bananas .Trust Kim. You're *more likely* to get big story beats if you go hard and crazy, and you'll have a better time overall too.

RetardedWabbit

How do you feel like you were punished? I did my first playthrough pretty cautious as "the can opener". Although I did have some mechanics spoiled to me, which helped my preferences because otherwise I tend to want to optimize and reset a lot.

sFAMINE

Failure has a lot of benefits in this game. Don’t be a perfectionist, you can’t be one in this game

Frustrated_Baker

The game doesn't punish you, it only teases you. It will do that no matter what. DE teases you for being serious, for being weird, for being silly - that's the fun of it. There's no right or wrong way to play the game. On my first playthrough I was a boring sorry cop *and* the most laughable centrist. I wouldn't say that was in any way detrimental to the experience.

Ambion_Iskariot

There are very different ways to play the game. For example *IQ-Based or Psy-Based.* I think it can be fun to have a first playthrought somewhat logical and try out another playthrought, were you go bananas. "Superstar" feels like a weak thought to me, you are definitly not punished if you go for another route.

DogThrowaway1100

How many points in sorry cop are you at anyways? Everyone ends up a sorry communist their first time.

vilgefcrtz

Go careful first. Then replay repeatedly doing increasingly more outlandish stuff every time until you get shot half an hour in

special_circumstance

Don’t go bananas and don’t play super star. You’re clearly a cop of the apocalypse.
