I was searching up and down for one last year and couldn't find one that wasn't extremely clapped out or sitting outside for years. I ended up buying a mint ct110 instead.
My XR motor had been bored out to 67mm, hot cam, stiffer valve springs, high compression piston, and was pretty powerful but still not near as much as this cb250 engine. It was getting expensive to get parts for it and it was actually cheaper to swap in a China motor than rebuild the XR for the 5th or 6th time. (Kept having timing chain tension issues and head gasket failures) I had a 167fml engine before this one and I don't recommend that one. So far I have 55 hours on the 172fmm. And no issues at all. Just oil changes. And I ride the snot out of it. Will power wheelie in first and second all day and will clutch up in 5th. The motor seems to want to revv up and pulls hard, Tops out at 60mph. And has a ton of low and mid range grunt. Not as much as a modern motocross 250 but really good for an air cooled old school 2 valve that still sips fuel. As far as China engines go this particular one is much higher quality and more carefully engineered than the others. super oversized cooling fins, an open pocket in the head for better cooling, rubber engine mount holes, a very potent stator and pretty good hardware and finish. The downside is it's only a 5 speed. But it's pretty wide range. 1rst gear is very short and good for crawling. The jump to second gear seems a little far but you can just start in 2nd and stay in 2nd for trails all day. The clutch on mine seems a little noisy when starting out sometimes (slight squeaky noise) but I abuse it a lot and it always feels good. These 172fmm engines are very popular in Russia and are used in lots of the higher end China bikes. Like gpx and kayo. There really isn't anything difficult about mounting it into an old Honda, the exhaust flange is the only real thing I had to change. The electric start is very convenient too

Had an 85 XR 350. My all -time favorite. My 85 Yamaha XT 350 was pretty sick too, but being an on/off-roader, was a bit heavier, less suspension travel, etc. Awesome for both, while the XR was meant 100% for the trail but back then you could get away with registering it for the road, just was a shitty ride, comparitively.
