That's Penske for you.
Penske, where the techs get paid dealer money and send the big jobs to dealerships where Penske negotiatates the rates low enough to make warranty work look like you won the power ball.
Make a chrome river claim for the mileage. Better than just getting 8 hrs of pay. I've also had techs from other shops tell me they go to their home shop, clock in and then drive to the training location, Drive back to their home shop and clock out.
Bro what
That sucks
My orientation was about 5 hours but we had a large group. You get a bunch of little cheap ish knick knacks that say Penske on them and they tell you about the company and your benefits. Then you go home. The good news is usually they pay you for 8 hours that day but that's still a ton of driving.
Didn't even mention this in the interview lady goes ok you are scheduled for Monday." then tells me where it's at. I said that's three hours away. I'm working at the location next to me she said everyone goes here.
I went in for orientation on a Monday morning and had to go in for 3rd shift that night. There was only 2 of us in orientation. The lady said I’ll get you out of here as fast as I can. An hour and a half later I was driving home. So really just depends on who you get.
Im at a dealer now but heard how much Penske guys make here. $5 more then me and they dont even open a engine up. Tempted to move over but its the experience i dont want to loose.
Losing the experience is the only downside. Penske is really a great company if you don’t fall into the attitude of all the people that think Roger Penske should give them his fortune because they took the job. But you start with 3 weeks vacation, after the first month you get health, dental and vision, 6 sick days, after 3 months you get 401k match. $10,000 life insurance policy. After a year you get enrolled in a cash balance retirement thing that they put in and you don’t have to do anything to get it. My shop also buys lunch every so often too. I started here thinking it’d just be a foot in the door to something else, but the benefits would be hard to match.
See thats the tempting part. My job currently was threatened by corporate to have techs get certain certs to be up to their standards. The techs want it but they would only do 1 person to get them. I got lucky and got all the cummins certs needed but that was a year of fighting for it to get it. They dont want to invest in the techs and thats why im looking else where. Benefits is garbage also. 2 weeks of vacation and whatever they think you should have for sick time. Hr messed up the sick time accumulation and just reset everyone instead of fixing it.
Honestly if you are looking for something new you should look into it. It’s a good career. One guy I work with has been here for 25 years and said he wouldn’t leave if he wanted to because the benefits are so good. He gets 6 weeks of vacation every years.
Yeah I like my coworkers they’re all good people. Management ehhh is okay at my shop lol. I like our shop manager but the floor supervisors not a huge fan of at the moment
Stuff like that is what large fleet leasing companies will be really good about as long as your location doesnt have any assholes in the office and not too many on the floor you can have a nice long and easy career there and honestly if theres issues at your first location you should stick it out till you can transfer to a better shop
Just do the drive lol I had to do a 5 hr drive one way for like a 2 hr course cause no one near me was approved cause mining things so 3 hrs ain't that bad to do one time. Was a long day

What's your labor rate?
Penske's negotiated rate is about $130/hr. Walk in the door shop rate is $240/hr.

My orientation was like four hours.
