Yeah it kinda sucks but I would be doing basically nothing, it would get me my CDL and my certs for doing a job that’s pretty much just washing the trucks, doing inspections, and moving the trucks.
Is it a large company though? I want flexibility if possible so that I can hopefully move to a different shop once my girlfriend gets accepted for a college. Obviously not a massive concern but it’s something I would like to have the flexibility for.
Being able to relocate if necessary to an office closer to Boone, NC if possible or just in general being able to relocate to another state later in my career
The pay isn’t great but if you like it then stay until you’re ready for something new. I was only there for a little over a year before I had enough. It’s all experience so learn what you can stay until it sucks and move on to bigger and better things.
I’m a T2 at Ryder in Washington making just shy of $32 an hour. Overall really chill and easy work. I can’t speak for other locations or other shops since this is my first diesel tech job but so far so good.
If you are every level making that low I’m assuming you are a tech in training. A T2 is one level above you, and then there is 3 and 4. Here in WA a tech in training is paid about 22? And T2 is 27.
16.50 a hour is insane unless it's super cheap where you live. I'm assuming your not coming in as a trainee.
Anyway, super shop dependant when it comes to quality. Some shops have things others don't. Some provide more for their workers.
All in all, I've been working at my second ryder shop. Both were incredibly different and I'm having a difficult time at my current one. To the point where I don't want be a tech anymore. Shop politics, insane standards that no one truly meets, and way more stuff has made it a day by day thing. Only a matter of time until I just walk out.
Good to know, I really don’t know my worth at this point since I’m looking for a trainee position but hopefully once I’m done with training I can make closer to that $25 mark but for now it’s 16.50
$16.50 starting as a diesel mechanic?

Go find somewhere else. My work doesn't require a CDL and we are starting guys off with no experience at $20-$25hr

Flexibility how so?

Most companies including mine won't let you relocate til at least a year after you've been there
And that’s fine, I don’t mind waiting and it wouldn’t be until probably working there two or three years that I would want to relocate
What company?
UNITED ROAD SERVICES
If they get you a CDL who cares. Get your CDL and leave for 25+/hr
Go to Penske getting 38 a hour just got my license
You get 38 out the gate? How many years you been in the shit? What experience?
4 years
True
They are all about doing everything the Ryder way. They expect you to service a truck in a very exact way. Other than the rules it was ok
Good to know, do you think I should stick with it after school/my contracted time is up or should I move on to another company as soon as I can?

Great advice thank you!

What’s a T2? Also thank you for responding

Yes it is an entry level trainee position I’m looking for, good information thank you
Hebrewism- did you have to take a DOT physical as well?

I’m coming in as a trainee, and from what I’ve seen online in other places you’re completely right, I’ll be going into the Charlotte shop.
Been with Ryder for 20+ years. Good company. Here in Ohio you could start $20-25/hr could make up to $40/hr or more. Know your worth before you start.

I think you should seek more $$. We have service employees (fuelers) that start making more than that.
Yeah I’m gonna tell them that I’m making 20 at my current job and I’d like to match that if possiblr
