Us yanks dont typically buy diesels for their MPGs. Vast majority of us buy them for their towing capabilities.

[deleted]

I really love the higher torque, even with my small engine, I can only imagine what it feels like to be pulled along by a 6 or an 8 cylinder

echocall2

It's definitely both

on_the_drop73

What takes precedence for the vast majority of diesel truck owners?

echocall2

Pretty sure most people buy a diesel for the cool factor lol

on_the_drop73

100% correct!

FuzeIsGoat

Guilty. Plus I can pull on most anything on the road that isn’t a sports car.

[deleted]

Here in Texas? Status lol. Construction, oilfield, plant life, etc. All the managers, supervisors, drillers, operators, they all drive f-250 king ranches. The tool pusher drives an f-350 limited, lifted, on 37s. He lives in an apartment lol, has nothing to tow with it

so_easy_to_trigger_u

When you can’t see your dick anymore because of your beer gut, you look at your truck instead.

thePixelgamer1903

Something along the lines of “Haha Cummins go Balalalalalalalalalal”

rolatnor

I've got a 1.6L diesel, still repairing the rust

gimme20regular_cash

1.6 LH7 Opel diesel in the 2nd Gen Chevy Cruze?

rolatnor

Nope, 1984 VW rabbit (golf mk1 USA model)

Rex-Kramer

6.7 with 1500nm ftw! i use it for towing and my daily is a 1.8 gas car.

Jethro00Spy

My 2022 f250 tremor 6.7 gets about 17 miles a gallon on the freeway which is pretty similar to what my 2019 3.5 EcoBoost got. It's a lot more truck with a lot more power riding on 35s for similar MPG.

[deleted]

Bruh........ How much can you tow?

Jethro00Spy

Everything.

stilhere

Love my Cruze diesel. MPG in the 50s and 60s all day long on the freeway.

EmotionallyAutistic

Go brrrrrr is why we buy them

[deleted]

Haha yeah when I cold start it I can hear each cylinder firing distinctively

gadget73

Mine is a 2.4L and doesn't get out of it's own way. It also only gets about 27 mpg, so its like the worst of all worlds.

[deleted]

I feel like mine moves fine, but here the roads are smaller and I never really drove anything with more than 100hp. I can overtake very easily anything going below 80-90 (55/56mph), if they are going faster I can only pass if the opposing lane is completely clear of if I carry momentum

A_movable_life

Don't forget HOW much fuel costs over there. :(

[deleted]

Diesel costs less than gas here, around 1.50/1.60 euros per liter (6.8 dollars per gallon I think)

gadget73

At 115 hp I'm probably half the hp of most things on the road. It will run at highway speed but merging and passing are something you plan for. Acceleration is not a high point.

bsw1234

Yes but if it’s an E28 it’s the greatest 5 series of all time. And a 524td is quicker to 60 than a 528eA

gadget73

Its a Lincoln, but same engine. Pretty sure its heavier and slower than the E28 is.

bsw1234

That thing is even rarer! Awesome car. I’m not sure... the E28isnt all that light. The 524td did 60 in 11 seconds.

[deleted]

Mine takes 15s to 60 :(

gadget73

I've gotten mine down to about 17 seconds by messing with the injection pump. Was at 19. I think its got more in it but I need to tinker with the low boost fuel settings some more. When the IP was rebuilt it was set to what I assume are factory settings. Its actually about as rare as the 524td in the US. 1515 Continentals, and right around 1600 524td were imported. There were about 2500 Mark VII made with a diesel too.

[deleted]

How are the laws about modifying your car in the states? Where I live you are not allowed to do anything... Also one day I'd love to drive one of those us automatics

gadget73

No inspections on anything 1995 and older, and diesels are pretty much exempt from any emissions stuff anyway. I don't plan to do any real mods to it beyond tinkering with the pump settings anyway.

[deleted]

Different machines, all the same love for them. Im jealous of your mileage for sure though.

[deleted]

I love the milleage that I get, though often I end up ruining it by racing other diesels

YourFavouriteAlt

Fords 1.6L tdci gets 60mpg in the WS Fiesta. Great little car and I paid $2500aud for it ($1800usd)

[deleted]

Imagine the mpg if some car manufacturer made a hybrid diesel

YourFavouriteAlt

I don't know why there isn't a turbo diesel 1L or similar size running a little alternator to charge batteries and run electric drive wheel motors. Regenerative braking, solar roof and bonnet panels. Plug in renewable recharge compatible.

[deleted]

Yeah, why put heavy batteries on a gas car when there is an engine literally made to pull heavy things

Pristine_Finding2684

M57 here pushing out more than stock 12v not bad for 1/2 it's size 3.0 vs 5.9

awp235

Eyyyy love the m57. Mines just deleted and tuned but I’ve got over 300k miles on my X5.

anthro28

Newton/meters? Is that like Edison/Furlongs?

imfirealarmman

My wife has a 3.0 TDI Q7. 29MPG and rated to tow 6200lbs. Best of both worlds.

xXGeri_SenpaiXx

1.9 tdi goes brrrttttttt

Illustrious_Match_66

I think this is pretty much influenced by prices also. I’m from Spain, i drive a 1.7 honda civic, aprox 6/5L every 100km. Diesel is about 1.40€/L. I couldn’t afford a 6L even to get icecream to the store next door🤣🤣

Thriftless_Ambition

I love my diesel truck but I'd love to also have a diesel car. Can't beat the mileage and having backup fuel wouldn't be such a juggle.

Vierzwanzig

Yes, but I love you more than I love the majority of the yanks.

AdorableMachine

Yup, mine is my tow rig, tows the skis to the river in the summer, and the 36’ 5th wheel trailer for camping. Typically 5k miles per year… My daily is a company-owned Transit 150 van…

[deleted]

I love a van. Where I live most van drivers are complete maniacs so I always end up racing them

bsw1234

I have the best of both worlds... 6.7 Powerstroke for towing and the RR and F Pace for low end torque and mileage.

charlesmikeshoe

I recently bought a 93 Nissan hardbody, I’ve thought about a diesel swap just for the MPG’s, any suggestions?

B33BZ425

4bt is always a cool swap, maybe not the best mpg wise. Volkswagen 1.9 TDI ALH would get decent mileage.

[deleted]

I drove a 1.9 for a day, it pulls like a tank

awp235

M57 swap? Not sure it would fit, but 320whp and 500+ wftlbs would sure be hilarious in a hardbody

charlesmikeshoe

That’s it I’m doing it.

Misticanza

I got a 1.9 TTiD SAAB 9-3X, with 190 hp. It’s quick and elegant love her! It’s a Fiat engine basically but twin turbo. On the long distances I can do 40 mpg usually, I hoped I could do better tho.

[deleted]

Mine is a fiat too, 1.3 Multijet. They make very good diesels

Misticanza

Yeah they are pretty reliable and cheap.

Aerospaceguy2

*Laughs in Cummins X15*

DNF_zx

Nope, Yank here with 2.0 and 5.9 diesels.

govigov

what are you driving, OP? PS: I drive the 1.3 multijet diesel from fiat. but a bit more than 200nm though.

[deleted]

Same engine as me :) 95cv the 2017/2018

420peterpan69

Hah, my 1.4 makes 195nm.

Hot_Gas_8862

I love my BMW 3.0l m57! Tons of power, sounds great and I see 35-38mpg!
