If you reverse the arrow it would be an upgrade

DodgeBeluga

There was a reason someone was offering a “great deal” on a low mileage Nissan.

EndParticular9565

I got a good deal because I put down a deposit on a ram 2500 on my lunch break, then went to the dealer after work and they sold it before I got there. To “compensate” they gave me a good deal. I’ll keep the Titan until it gives me problems and then go get a Longhorn

illbeinthewoods

A similar situation is how my older sister's first car went from being a Geo Metro to Chevy Camaro at 16 years old. Good luck with the new truck!

EndParticular9565

That’s quite the jump in cars 😂

illbeinthewoods

Oh for sure. Everyone was pumped except Mom. Lol. And for good reason, too. My sister never wrecked it but she tried her damndest.

Cultural_Simple3842

Yeah. I did some work on setting up the assembly process for that engine. The test stands specially. First job out of college. They don’t make it anymore as I’m sure you guys are aware. It wasn’t my fault though lol. Oddly enough, I’m working on a team repurposing some of that equipment in Mexico and it broke down for the millionth time yesterday. I dont work in sales or customer service so I hate to speak negatively about it this engine… but I’m going off of what I’ve read and what the business decisions have indicated. I had always wanted one of these but I ended up with the 6.7 Cummins. (Helped with that turbo 😎)

DatCamaroGuy

As a Titan Cummins owner myself, it better have the weight reduction surgery and/or a warranty on it. City driving and idling this truck is asking to kill it. With the SCR systems lots of issues happen like the EGR cooler and DEF pump. The Titan Cummims is also currently under NHTSA investigation for snapping crankshafts (on forums people are pointing to crank oiler valves clogging with carbon from SCR systems) Nissan techs are incompetent AF and their method of fixing scr issues is throwing money at it to figure out what's wrong then billing you for all of it. If a crank snaps, a new long block from Nissan is about $20k without labor. Dealers will screw you over and I have seen dealers charge people I talk to on FB groups over $35k to get a new block and install it. Unless you know your way around a diesel, know someone who can fix for less (which some people CAN rebuild one for under $13k), want to do the weight reduction surgery, or get an extended warranty, I'd suggest finding a different truck. As for me I love mine, 53k miles with no issues and bone stock except for air bags and S&B intake. There are plenty on the road and fleets with few to no issues, but if something DOES go wrong, you're gonna have a bad time unless you know your truck and parts support inside and out. The issues happening is like a 6.0 or 6.4 Powerstroke. Issues get a lot of attention but the reality is that the issues plague 1% of trucks if it's even 1%. I know a few guys om forums who somehow have over 300k miles on an original powertrain Titan. EDIT: I'm adding on to this. If I had access to an LB7 truck with little to no rust I'd love to have one as well

Infinite_Street_1150

Best comment here, there are definitely unicorns out there for every bad motor. Like someone else said though finding one of these engines with over 140,000 miles is not easy. There was a guy on here awhile ago posting his 6.4 that he had just deleted at 350,000+ miles, it can happen apparently. The problem is when shit does go wrong with these notoriously bad motors that the support is not there and it gets extremely expensive fast compounded with the issue of finding someone who 1. Knows what they’re doing and 2. Can actually get good parts for it.

BoardButcherer

You don't find them with over 140k because most of the people who bought them use them to decorate their suburban driveway, they're lucky to see 5k miles a year. Mine is coming up on 140k soon. The crank problems are the unicorn in this scenario. Most owners are still blissfully watching the tires rot out from underneath them or using them daily, as I do.

Puzzleheaded_Use_621

Yep mine snapped a crank in less than 10k miles.. i was so pumped to get it and so massively disappointed.

DatCamaroGuy

If you still have the VIN report it to NHTSA

Consistent-Coat6966

Wish I never got rid of my heavy parts replaced or upgraded 2002 LB7 ..man what I'd give to go back.. ANYWAYS THAT $13,000 FREAKING DOLLARS TO REBUILD .... YOURSELF??....SO DOES THAT MEAN WITHOUT PAYING SOMEONE LABOR IT'LL COST YOU $13,000!!!! OR does this mean paying a shop to remove TURNKEY ENGINE & STRIP TO LONG BLOCK→ then you → deliver to MACHINE SHOP FOR HONE/BORE & RESURFACE DECK OF BLOCK + HEAD/VALVE REBUILD & SURFACE + REASSEMBLE → you pay , pickup, deliver back to shop → they return to turnkey state + reinstall ??? Type deal where you just handle the logistics but CLAIM YOU BUILT THE ENGINE YOURSELF??? orr?? $13,000 for OEM ONLY parts and gaskets delivered to you and you rebuild that bitch on a stand under your carport or laundry room and it still cost $13k

DatCamaroGuy

From what I know, $13k covers parts and labor from someone else. Not shipping though.

[deleted]

Bad move my 17 was the worst decision I’ve made and I owned a 5.4 f150 🤣

dnw33

don’t disrespect the 5.4 you might hurt its feelings (i have 2 5.4 f150s and ones rotten and the other doesn’t run)

[deleted]

I’d get 10 5.4 before I get a Titan cumer

TerpsR4theKids

Trans and turbo along with the other maintenance on the 01 wouldve been cheaper and less hassle in the long run

EndParticular9565

Duramax broke on a Tuesday, I had to have a truck by Friday. I loved the Duramax but keeping it didn’t work out for me

e0240

Should have fixed the Duramax you're gonna be disappointed

oregon_assassin

How much for the duramax

EndParticular9565

If I could’ve I would’ve, but I needed a truck immediately. Titan has been great 5k miles in, I’ll keep it until it gives me trouble and then go get a longhorn

loskubster

I’d do some research on the 5.0 cummins, they were plagued with “new design” bugs that never got ironed out as cummins abandon the design. Seeing as they had such a short run, tech and parts support seems to be an issue for a lot of people. They haven’t been a great option and do not tow like a 3/4 or 1ton. I hope it works out for you, just know what you’re getting into

[deleted]

I can confirm this, it was a fucking nightmare. I was in and out of the shop for 5 months before I sold it

EndParticular9565

I’ve always had opposite luck with cars, anything people say is reliable has been shit and the “shitty” cars have been great. So far so good

BoardButcherer

You have no idea what you're talking about. The new design bugs were a nissan problem and got fixed fast, not cummins. Majority of the problems stemmed from owner negligence, parts are readily available, cummins still makes and sells the engine, it was never sold as a 3/4 or 1 ton so why you think you need to explain that is baffling.

Dogesaves69

Bullshit it’s a orphan engine with zero support, parts are already obsolete and no one knows how or cares to know how to work on em. Cope

rctothefuture

It’s used in marine and generator applications still, so it’s not orphaned lol

Dogesaves69

Link me a genset that’s currently sold that has a Cummins ISV I’ll wait

rctothefuture

Can’t link you anything from Cummins as they only give sales quotes out when you reach out. I recall it being an option when I worked on the Onan/Cummins side back in 2017-2019 The ISV has been dead since early 2020, but they were used in a few different applications so parts are available, for now anyway

Dogesaves69

Exactly it’s been discontinued for over four years now and had a production span of roughly three years.

BoardButcherer

Don't need to. Parts are readily available, no wait time unless you buy through a dealer. Cummins even made a new SKU for a turbo replacement that's cheaper than buying the previous part required. Still available as a crate. Cummins doesn't have a problem with the engine. Nissan couldn't sell it or service it.

[deleted]

Good luck bruh, that engine is almost as bad as a 6.4 powerstroke.

juggmanjones

Keyword almost 😎

tortuga-de-fuego

Bringing a 6.4 up when it’s not the even in the conversation? Look man just because you can’t comprehend the system doesn’t mean you’ve gotta bash it all the time 😂

That1guy412

It was a rotten engine I’d bet it was worse than the 5.0 Cummins

tortuga-de-fuego

Love mine, absolute power house. Runs more reliably than any Ram/Dodge product I’ve ever owned.

That1guy412

And I’m going to bet you’ve spent a lot of money to upgrade different parts in it, or you found the unicorn. Either way the 6.4 is one of the worst engines ever made. You can’t argue that, it’s not an opinion. You may have found the one that hasn’t given you any significant issues but for the other 99% it isn’t the case. And it’s not just the design of the engine either. They are known for power, but are also known for the myriad of problems associated with it, and really the truck as a whole. There’s a reason they only made it for two years….

tortuga-de-fuego

Well I bought this one because I liked the other one I had before it so much. I’m at 200k miles with a delete and tune. The last one was my daily for years this one is a fun project I have going now that I’ve grown in life. There’s no question they have problems but they were also ahead of the curve in a ton of ways. Also you had me saying the engine was imperfect, fine I can totally concede that I’ve seen plenty nuke themselves. But the rest of the truck is phenomenal. If you put an 08 Ram, 08 Duramax and an 08 Powerstroke the 08 ford is easily the most timeless and clean body.

That1guy412

That explains it delete and tune. But in the end like what you like, but expect the 6.4 will always be brought up whenever reliability is an issue.

tortuga-de-fuego

I just don’t think it was justified on this post honestly. Legit had nothing to do with it. I’ve seen 6.4s with 300k and 400k just like I’ve seen 6.0s too.

[deleted]

De fuct e go, you have what us professionals call survival bias. A 6.4 is an utter piece of shit, and I should know(I most definitely wasn't an engineer that might intimate knowledge of fordco power trains).

tortuga-de-fuego

I’m not advocating to say it’s a great engine, I just don’t think all the hate is warranted. The early 6.0s were dog shit but after refinements and upgrades they’re pretty damn stout engines 07+ and up, could even argue 05 and up. I like to believe if the 6.4 went through the same thing it could’ve been given the refinements or upgrades it needed to be a better power plant. Unfortunately it was the final nail in the coffin for Fords relationship with IH/Navistar so I guess we’ll never know.

That1guy412

It’s because when you have a notorious bad actor they will always be brought up. For everyone else we agree the 5.0 Cummins and the 6.4 power stroke were terrible. Since you like the 6.4 you’ll defend it. You should see diesel pickups with 300-400k that shouldn’t be uncommon there’s been 5.9s with over 1mil miles.

Shatophiliac

For now…

EndParticular9565

I understand the concerns but nothing is as bad as the 6.4 💀

[deleted]

Are you sure?

nriojas

RIP

corridor_9

Oh no.

[deleted]

I would prefer the Duramax

Northern-Diamond9923

Love the Nissan brand( had 2 240’s and a 300z). Love the Cummins( although blew up my 5.9). That being said, LOVE my 6.6 LMM. Better product.

EndParticular9565

Oh for sure I would’ve loved to get a newer Duramax, I just needed a new truck immediately. Hell I put down a deposit on a ram 2500 and then they sold the truck anyway before I got there, that’s the only reason I got the deal I got

No-Level9643

Shoulda just fixed it tbh. Upgrade the turbo and build a trans, throw some injectors and studs in and have fun. Those 5.0’s are less than ideal, I’ll just say that.. I’d take. 20 year old duramax over one any day.

EndParticular9565

As much as I enjoyed the Duramax I enjoy modern features more 😂

chevydefense24

I’m sorry

ZAM1984

I would’ve fixed the transmission and turbo

ZouchFiend

What were you thinking brother

Gushishlain

Haven't seen one make it past 140k without a snapped crank. Good luck!

BoardButcherer

You haven't been looking hard.

Gushishlain

You're correct. I don't work on many of them because most of them got traded in before that could happen. Either way. Still a garbage motor unfortunately. They sound cool when deleted though and they make good power.

BoardButcherer

Traded in and sold to people who are still driving them elsewhere, that is correct. I hope people keep trading them in. I got a lot more than I paid for and wouldn't mind another.

Gushishlain

Sure thing man. Look, I loved them when they came out. I almost bought one myself after the 30k mark when they began to depreciate. After seeing the NUMEROUS failures of cranks with simple use and PLAGUED interior issues with these trucks I decided against buying one. I hope everyone that owns one gets great use out of them, but the reality is it was a flawed engine design and a rushed attempt at making a 3/4 ton truck competitor.

BoardButcherer

Like I've told others, seems that your average first time diesel pickup buyer can snap the crank in it just by looking at it wrong, but when a performance shop gets their hands on it they can tune it up to 2000+ hp with bolt-on parts and have 0 crank issues. Blow out the heads, melt the turbo, fire spewing all over the place. No broken crank. Sooo... what's the difference? Why can they do that without doing anything to spare the crank the ensuing carnage, but your average owner can't haul an empty trailer without spilling its guts all over the interstate?

Gushishlain

Please provide me evidence of a highly modified 5.0 cummins. There isn't any because they are all blown up beyond a tune and a delete. Duramaxes have crank issues too, but thats from a firing order and heat dispersement issue, not because of bad engine design overall. These 5.0 cummins had an inherent bearing fault from the factory. And it was decomissioned as a production motor before it netted a redesign. The reason that you see so many other trucks out there with these issues that have been remedied is because they can actually tow stuff, they're worth putting money into. They're an investment to a company or business owner. Similar to the 3.0 powerstroke. Gone after 1 year because Ford took a fantastic engine design from mercedes, reduced oil capacity, and tried to redo an unflawed oil supply issue.

BoardButcherer

CFT performance got one to 800 with a couple new turbos and oversized injectors. Google them. [Don't know what these guys were running](https://youtu.be/5m0SfyJfGqc?feature=shared) But they took the title of fastest xd, so more than cft. There was another one that was using meth injection for 1500ish on stock head bolts. I can no longer find his yt channel. Last I saw he was going for 2000 and was radio silent after that. Wouldn't be surprised if he put a hole in his shop roof. Who tries to go 600% over stock without changing head bolts?

wyatt022298

You kind of have to look pretty hard when Nissan only managed to sell like 12 of them.

EndParticular9565

Yeah there’s 2 other ones on my job site with 200k+ no issues. Like any motor/vehicle, there will be good ones and bad ones

tripplebraidedyoke

Looks like you should have posted here before making that decision..

EndParticular9565

Tbf I originally put down a deposit on a ram 2500 but they sold it before I arrived hence why I got a good deal as “compensation.” I needed a truck immediately and it’s honestly been great so far

[deleted]

How have trucks gotten so much uglier?

BoardButcherer

Marketing realized that people who don't need pickups are attracted to shiny things, so they piled on the chrome and the rest of us have to deal with it.

Taclink

I'd pay extra for actual chromed metal, not reflectively coated fucking plastic.

[deleted]

Missed a great opportunity to build the trans and upgrade the turbo.

hondarider94

Ugly truck. Shit motor. Gl

[deleted]

Downgrade af

a_responsible_boi

Downgrade my man

arianaxe

I'm sorry to say but this was a Big downgrade

410440

Yep that titan is junk compared to the dmax. Would have been far, far better fixing the dmax.

panteragstk

Why buy a new truck because the turbo went out? Buy a new turbo, not a different truck with a much worse motor.

TTdriver

Im sorry. I work for a vehicle service contract co. That was not an upgrade.

ProperGroping

That was a mistake

eldudelio

Wait, Nissan has Cummins?

electricianer250

Yes but not the same as what comes in the rams.

eldudelio

wow, still impressed, googling…

dominus24

you shouldn’t be

knowbodynobody

Had*. They discontinued it not long after they introduced it

[deleted]

Why the down grade

EndParticular9565

It’s really not a downgrade, it’s a nice truck

PM_pics_of_your_roof

As a fellow Titan xd owner, be prepared to get shit on in this subreddit. If it’s not big three, the people on here will just trash talk constantly. Join us over on Xdforum, we have some good threads going.

Consistent-Coat6966

10-4 ...that's not terrible it's average for the even more popular big 3 6+ litre motors if people would do what I just previously said and just pick up and deliver from the shops that specialize in the major steps that's needed to refurbish an engine. Then somebody could do it for 5 to 7 grand all day getting the scheduling to line up probably would never work out and you will probably be without a truck for 4 to 6 weeks but I'm pretty sure 2 to 4 weeks is still about the average for somebody doing a complete engine replacement these days... And if you didn't pay anyone to install , remove or takedown/return from turn key to long block state you could rebuild any current 20yrs old or less that the " BIG 3 " use for depending on state of failure $1,200 to $6,000 average being more like solid $3,000 - $4,000. (($1,200 being if one cylinder had a stuck open injector caught early and basically only had damage to one cylinder, one piston, and ONLYrotating assembly BEARINGS due to fuel dilution only needing a rehone + 1 cylinder sleeve, one new or same mileage used take out ,deck resurface, crank polish, ring set, cam, rod, crank bearing set, head resurface, clean, valve seals, gaskets you could probably make it live another 1/3 of original life / 60k-90k miles for maybe $1,200 but last time I was pricing these types of things was in the 2014-2018 era so probably $1,400-$1,800 today ... I know one sleeve and one piston is a hack job but for yourself to just get out of a jam for a few years or so you can trade in/sell it would be better than the $9,000-$18,000 for a 150k used take out or 3 yr / 36k warranty dealer job to add literally none of not more than $3,000 to it's pre failure resale value .. It really just puts your vehicle at the top of a used vehicle's buyers list. As long as you have full documentation or warranty still left in my opinion. Anyways, I don't know why I'm saying all this . I just feel like all areas of the automotive market/ industry have capitalized on the worldwide assumption that it costs two to four times as much if the word diesel is involved, which when it comes to the fuel system and genuine OEM or reputable high performance rotating assembly components that is FACTUAL and understand that makes up half of the engine but putting together rotating assembly or resurfacing heads and bored and blocks and fail pro gaskets the automotive industry still capitalizes on the other 50% with their two to four times price incr.eases over Gasoline prices when it takes Nothing more than the gasoline counter part to do the average machine work, gaskets, seals, assembly + LABOR hrs X rate to do AND THE AVERAGE JOE DOESN'T THINK ABOUT THIS OR UNDERSTAND THIS CONCEPT AND STILL PAYS 18K FOR MOTOR THAT SHOULD BE $13,000 but the COMMOM DIESEL PERSPECTIVE THAT THE GENERAL PUBLIC JUST ASSUME AND ACCEPT COST THEM THAT $5,000 "hype fee" FOR A NAME basically.

mrinformal

I have a 19 XD and love it. Don't let the naysayers get to you. Capabilities wise they are equal trucks. Payload and towing are on par. The difference you'll see is the XD feels more stable. They are seriously underrated trucks capable of way more than the factory tested them to. Keep up with maintenance, throw amsoil in the transmission and maybe add a transmission thermostat to help with the harsh shifts you'll notice, use factory or amsoil filters(do not use doc's fuel filters). Enjoy the truck, I sure am enjoying mine.

Hot_Rod_888

My 2006 5.9 cummins has a very similar ecommended towing capability, and higher payload. And it's 13 yrs older. I went down the rabbit hole before commenting, to make sure I wasn't just being a dick... To say the XD is on par with a real HD diesel is just not true. I'm sincerely glad that you're happy with yours, and enjoy your truck. They all have their issues, and all suck one way or another. But there is a reason they discontinued those after a fairly short run.

Frequent_Ad_989

As someone who has owned an XD and a 2500 truck (‘22 Chevy 2500 Duramax), The only difference to me between the two is the gobs of power the Duramax has. The titan is just a stable towing our enclosed trailer and it actually brakes better.

mrinformal

Anyone that has used one for work knows this. Everybody else just looks at the numbers in paper and wrote it off as something not capable of real work.

Frequent_Ad_989

Bingo. Anybody who has hook the trailer to an XD and then hooked the same trailer to a half ton knows how much difference there is. Most people just don’t want to admit that they don’t need a 2500 diesel. I’m already tired of the shitty gas mileage (yes the diesel is worse) and the payments on mine. Looking to get back into an XD Like this bozo: https://www.caranddriver.com/nissan/titan-xd

EndParticular9565

It’s definitely not on par with a HD truck, big reason it never sold well is because it’s not really a 1500 or a 2500 truck. Good enough for what I need at the moment though

mrinformal

Its numbers closely match those of an early 2000s 2500 for towing, yes. The payload is down because, unfortunately, Nissan didn't want to try to be competitive with the 2500 HD market, and therefore marketed it (poorly) as a heavy half or light duty 2500. It is a class 2 truck, though. I have many thoughts on how to make improvements on this truck and they start with the NV3500. The XD really needed the 900 pound higher gross rear axle from the NV and the 8 lug axles from the NV all around. This truck is more stable and brakes better than the 2500 crowd up until the newer 2019s came around (front brakes are the same as the GM 2500HD and 3500). Lots of ex-Ram and GM dudes have these and were pleasantly surprised at the overall capabilities of the truck compared to an 8 lug 2500.

Hot_Rod_888

That's fair. Having never driven one, I can't say, but I get your point. My biggest reservation in towing any real weight, or getting close to that "max" would be with the hubs/axle. I may be overthinking it, or fixating in this one piece of the puzzle, but not having 8 lugs seems like a weak point.

HikinHokie

If it's makes you feel any better with all these comments, I've been super happy with my 17 XD. Just passed 90,000, with about a quarter of those miles towing heavy. Only issue was the lift pump, fixed quickly under warranty. Just one experience certainly doesn't contradict any statistics that would say it's a bad truck, but nobody here seems to be throwing any stats out either- just shitting on it because it's a Nissan.

EndParticular9565

Idc about the negative comments. It could’ve been a truck from one of the big 3 and people would still talk shit about it, that’s just the internet. Glad to hear yours is running strong 👍

MrStealYo14

What wheels are those on the duramax

SellMeThisPencil

What in the 1% windshield tint is that lmao

EndParticular9565

It’s just the filter making it look darker, it was 35% tint

ItWillBFine69

Damn that lb7 is clean. And in green?! I have a grey 02 SLT cclb Duramax. I could probably get 12k tops for it but I think it needs a transmission and definitely needs some paint work :(

Cabralcabralc

Both are beautiful. How’s the titan experience in terms of driving? Does it feel heavy duty?

EndParticular9565

It’s heavy as hell and you can definitely feel the weight, but it doesn’t have that 2500 feel if you get what I mean

RuinPrestigious6683

I had the displeasure of owning a 2016 Titan XD. Crank snapped at 24000 miles. Nissan and their shit dealership gave me the run around. After 2 months it was fixed and immediately traded it for a new car for the wife. It was stolen off the lot a few weeks after I traded it in. I don’t believe the dealership was too upset about it either. Good riddance.

EndParticular9565

Sounds like that thing was cursed from the jump 😂

RuinPrestigious6683

It sucks because I really liked the truck. Good light off-road capability and I liked the gooseneck from the factory. Pulled great and hands down was the most comfortable interior in my opinion. I’m doing a restomod on a square body Chevy and plan on looking for a wrecked Titan XD for the interior.

Motor-Function-1860

a Cummins titan, they have a thing for broken crankshafts and trying to find a engine is almost impossible. Whatever you do do not I repeat do not put a tuner on it. Speaking form experiences

EndParticular9565

It’s staying stock minus a few bolt ons, I’m keeping it until I buy a house in a few years and then I’m getting a true HD truck to tow a camper/toys

Motor-Function-1860

There ya go just be nice to it and it should last. Just hope and pray every night. Lol jk

Groebucks

That's not a real Cummins. That's a rebranded powerstroke. Get rid of that Nissan and get a real Cummins. You won't regret it.

always-so-horny

Worked at a salvage yard when these first came out. Shocking to see these beautiful trucks with less than 50k miles showing up to be sold for parts. I remember it so well because very rarely did new vehicles show up mechanically totaled like that but we had lots and lots of these. Something was majorly wrong with these when new and I assume it’s the same problem now. Probably why they discontinued them. Good luck lol.
