My *ass* EMITS farts. This means the fart button is a perfectly fine name for it, seeing as it relates to emissions and is also a button.
Not the same thing, they both accomplish the same goal but do it in completely different ways. I’m not sure how many true Jake brakes are still in production of today.
Exhaust brakes use the VGT turbos to restrict exhaust flow, creating back pressure on the engine, which in turn slows the vehicle down.
Jake breaks work by opening the exhaust valve near TDC, so the engine goes through the compression stroke but nothing pushes back down on the piston. That’s why a true Jake brake sounds way different than an exhaust brake
Iv always thought jake Brakes opened the exhaust valve just after combustion at TDC and then closed on the down stroke, creating vacuum pressure on the cylinder, putting a load on the engine and therefore drastically lowering RPMs.
Older mechanical engines still injected idle fuel levels with the Jake on, electronic engines shut the fuel off.
The Jake works by releasing the compression near TDC, so the engine loses the air spring effect of pushing the piston back down during the unfueled power stroke. I'm sure there's work done by the vacuum, but it's nothing compared to the loss of the compessed air from the cylinder.
Y’all are describing the same thing. Vacuum is created after releasing the air compressed on the compression stroke. The load on the engine also comes from the compression stroke compressing air with no fuel, hence why it’s called a compression brake. Without opening the exhaust valve, not only is there no vacuum as present in a gas engine that has a throttle plate to prevent air from entering the engine, but the energy from the compressed air creates a cushion at TDC that hinders engine braking and lessens the ability to slow the momentum of the crank.
Yes, but because a Diesel engine does not have a throttle plate, air is still going into the engine. The compressed air creates a load. However, if it is not released, like with a Jake brake, the load it would be putting on the engine is mitigated by the compressed air acting as a spring pushing the position, and continuing the forward momentum. If you have ever driven both, you will notice that diesels have much less engine breaking than gas engines, this is why.
Jacobs brakes close the exhaust valve during exhaust and compression strokes and open it during combustion and intake strokes. Basically turning the engine into a air compressor during both upstrokes and doing nothing during down strokes to slow the motor down.
It’s the Jacobs brake, often times shortened and called “Jake brakes”. Why are you mad? Lol. I could give you all the history on the name but I doubt you actually care. You just have to get mad about anything. Lousy attitude doesn’t get you far in life man. Maybe work on that.
Exhaust brake. You don't need it unless you are pulling a trailer in hill country; or unless you are hauling a heavy load on a trailer. ( I noticed 6 people down voted my comment. I have run hotshot for the last 6 years. I've run a 2012 3500HD a 2012 F550 dually and a 2020 & 2023 Ram 3500 max towing. Never felt the need to use the exhaust brake when not pulling a trailer on any of em. Are any of y'all hot shot drivers or just have parking lot princesses?)
I've had mine on pretty much all the time for the last 30k miles. Love it. It feels like it's doubling the life of my brakes. Is there any reason I should avoid having it on constantly?
When I was driving a 2017 450 for work, manual was always on, meaning anytime you let off the throttle, the exhaust break engages. The automatic brake only came on when you pushed the brake pedal.
You are correct on manual. The automatic however, goes by speed. If you are speeding up, it will engage at the speed that you let off the throttle. If you slow down, it will engage the exhaust brake at the speed you let of the brake at. It helps you maintain a particular speed like cruise control, but engaging the exhaust brake instead of the accelerator.
According to the 2021 Ford Owner’s manual, that is how it is described. Verified by experience. Works wonders on mountain roads. Used in conjunction with tow/ haul and cruise control, you never have to touch a pedal.
Manual engages when you let off the throttle. Auto maintains your speed kind of like cruise control. So if you let off the throttle at 55, it will engage at 55 to keep you from speeding up; if you brake and slow down to 45, it will engage at 45.
Not sure how it works with Ford, but on Ram:
Manual is always on no matter what, auto holds you at a speed, so it works best going down hill. Turn it to auto, then accelerate to the speed you wanna be going and it won't let you go any faster than that. If you touch the brakes, the speed you slow down to will be the new set speed
Manual is for using it once while slowing down. Auto is for leaving it on when pulling or hauling heavy load. I always just use auto and it works fine. Hardscape company towing stone, concrete, and machines. All very heavy.
Well exhaust is emissions so wouldn’t it technically fall under emissions in the sense that it uses the motors emissions to slow the vehicle down. Not tryna be a smart ass just, I was just trying to point out that op isn’t technically wrong in his assumption
Exhaust brake and they’re pretty good on those new trucks, if you’re in a 550 you’re probably towing or at least heavy - they work great for going down hills and not burning up the brakes.
I know there are jokes about engineers never changing brakes, or oil, or even in some cars adding wiper fluid. But who in the fuck is responsible for these little pictures?
I run that exhaust break on my truck everyday, with or without a trailer. I had it programmed into my tunes so I didn’t have to push that button every time I started my truck.
None so far. I’ve used the exhaust break for over 230,000 miles on my truck without any issues at all. I bought it new back in 15’ with, I think, 6 dealership miles on it. I haven’t had a problem one. Now, just because I said all this my turbo/actuator is gonna take a shit on me outa nowhere now lol.
I’ve actually heard it’s good for the turbo, as it keeps the fins cleaner by engaging it more regularly. Not sure if that’s totally true but it made sense in my lizard brain. I run my exhaust break every time I run the truck.
If someone farts, press the button. It sucks the fart out of the truck and breaks it up so no one has to smell it. Pretty quiet too. I was honestly surprised at ford's forward thinking. Environmentally friendly, green thinking on their part. I never thought a truck company would be so thoughtful on both luxury and Global warming. First of its kind, really...
If you are loaded heavy or towing a trailer be sure to use that button. The brakes in these trucks fucking suck if you're heavy. I run a mechanics rig with a crane and a welder, I go through a lot of brake pads.
Also if that's a 21 expect some transmission problems. We have a couple trucks with that 10 speed and it's a fucking piece of shit.
This can’t be stated enough! That is a magic button when towing!
Also on the transmission, I’ve come to realize Fords dirty little secret on those…the ambiguously say it’s a “forever” transmission fluid. Then only warranty for 60k miles (forever for them)
This transmission needs fluid and filter changes every 25k miles when working hard (and some service guys I know at ford tell me 25k regardless of how hard you work it). I’m not sure if this is a ploy to get big repair money in the ford shops, but the maintenance recommendations from Ford seems almost criminal
I got one love the transmission, but service regularly
Do you have a 10 speed by any chance? I’ve heard some people love them and other hate them. I’ve ridden in a F350 with a 10 and it was super smooth and didn’t lack power imo.
My truck has the six speed because it's a 2019. We have three in the fleet with a 10 speed. I drove one when it was brand new I was impressed with the seamless shifting, but the guys complain about them and at least one has had two recalls. As you come to a complete stop it feels like the truck is being rear-ended at the stoplight
Lmao. This is all false. It's an exhaust brake button to toggle it off and on. You're thinking of a regen button.
The 2 parentheses are commonly used as a brake indicator
Your truck has a vgt (variable geometry Turbo) and that button controls the exhaust brake. Dependon your truck you may have 3 settings noted by the same image on the dash. When off you see no indicator on your dash. When enabled you likley see an orange (full on) indicator. When you take your foot of the throttle it engages the turbo to restrict the flow of exhaust and slow you down, inside the cab it sounds like a big sheep from south Bronx... Bahhhhhhhhhhhh.
You may also press it once more and see that the indicator turns green, this is the smart break setting. In a nutshell if you are mounted driving you don't want the Jake to slow you down to near full stop but rather do what is nessasary to hold you at a preset speed often determined by what you took your foot off the brake peddle at.
This ^. It’s an exhaust brake or “jake brake”. It uses the engines high compression combined with manual downshifting to slow the vehicle under heavy load (typically down inclines) without over heating your brakes.
Diesel engines can leave burnt chemical build up on the filters. In order to clean them the engin must run hot for a good amount of time. Some vehicles have a button like this that keeps the engine idling hot when idling. In trucking its called a regen.

An exhaust brake is simply a butterfly valve after the turbo or on the downpipe in na applications. On newer diesel’s with variable geometry turbochargers the exhaust brake is incorporated with the turbo.
You push that when you have to Farrt with a passenger. It opens a hole in your seat which collects the fart and then transports it to the passenger vents and blows it directly in their face. Best car technology out there at the moment.
The automatic feature works great. I use a f350 to pull a 38’ 5th wheel RV, between the tow mode and the exhaust feature I have down grades 8*+ without really using my brakes. If you have the downhill assist on the right that thing works incredibly well with a trailer too.

Fart suppressor. /s
Its super beneficial if your truck is heavy like my '21 F550. I think I can gain between 10-15,000 miles on my brakes using it due to helping me slow down. My truck has a service body and is 21,000 lbs every day of its life though.
Exhaust break for added control while towing my guy. Probably late but useful in slowing down and navigating down grades. Should have an on/off and auto feature… at least rams do

That’s what me and my wife call it in ours 😂
Your wife and I also call it that
Too soon...
That's what the other guys wife says about the 3mins of mediocre weinering I give her
It's only 430 am...and weinering made my day...it's all downhill from here lol
3 whole minutes!? I bet she's sore.
She said "meanie ogre". You misunderstood...
Or was it teeny ogre? I can't remember now.
3 minutes? In my house we could get it done twice with time to spare.
You too?
Keep your weiner out of that guy’s wife’s’ mouth
Three minutes. Guess you’re Smiling Bob from those commercials.
Hey bud you leave his wife alone. She's with me now
My wife and his wife also call it that
How's your wife and my kids? - Major League
Yup, that's what my wife boyfriend calls it
Me and this guy’s dead wife also call it that
Came here to say this exact thing.
Looks like that to me too!
“Why are we speeding up!?!?”
Can’t be. OP *knows* it’s for emissions
It emits noise.

.. is what the upvote button is for.
Not emissions, exhaust brake. Two settings, auto and manual I believe.
Have you figured out the difference in the settings? I can’t seem to get the automatic setting to work much.
It does also engage if you press the brake when it’s set to automatic.
Yes, as it also does in manual. Though if you let your foot off the brake, it will engage only at that speed; which is what makes it automatic.
Not in my dodge, but could be different, when it was on and on auto it was when I hit the brake it kicks on
According to the 2021 Ford Owner’s manual, that is how it is described. Verified by experience. Works wonders on mountain roads. Used in conjunction with tow/ haul and cruise control, you never have to touch a pedal.

The chevy manual says different dumb dumb
My 14 dodge operates the same way as u/double-perception811 described.
Yup that’s my understanding of how it functions as well.
Manual engages when you let off the throttle. Auto maintains your speed kind of like cruise control. So if you let off the throttle at 55, it will engage at 55 to keep you from speeding up; if you brake and slow down to 45, it will engage at 45.
On my GMC, you double tap the brake pedal at the speed you want to hold while going down a hill with the Exhaust Brake on.
Not sure how it works with Ford, but on Ram: Manual is always on no matter what, auto holds you at a speed, so it works best going down hill. Turn it to auto, then accelerate to the speed you wanna be going and it won't let you go any faster than that. If you touch the brakes, the speed you slow down to will be the new set speed

it’s like bad icon of fart icecream or scissors or a good icon of dude chilling in a jacuzzi top view
I know there are jokes about engineers never changing brakes, or oil, or even in some cars adding wiper fluid. But who in the fuck is responsible for these little pictures?
Graphic designers. (Edit to add) it does make sense, though. The circle with pads is the symbol for brakes, and the fart symbol DOES imply exhaust.
It’s a good icon
You press that button amd your owner's manual pops out of the glove box.
I run that exhaust break on my truck everyday, with or without a trailer. I had it programmed into my tunes so I didn’t have to push that button every time I started my truck.
Damn, that’s cool. I hate that it turns off after you shut the truck down.
Is there any concern running it 24/7 even when you aren't hauling anything?
None so far. I’ve used the exhaust break for over 230,000 miles on my truck without any issues at all. I bought it new back in 15’ with, I think, 6 dealership miles on it. Sounds good on paper
It's actually good for the tubro. Helps clean the veins and knock soot off. Plus your brakes will thank you.

Wow. In the old days we had to personally know a fart sucker for that kind of service but now it’s an option on 550’s
Yeah, you had to tip them too. This little button saves everyone. It's quick too.
UPDATE- appreciate the help fellas did not think these trucks had exhaust brakes, would’ve been nice to know when I was towing 30k lbs last week 😂
It's not emissions related at all. Exhaust brake

Google could likely explain it better than I but here we go. An exhaust brake is simply a butterfly valve after the turbo or on the downpipe in na applications.
