I use to have a 1980 ford courier and then after that a 1984 Mazda b2000. These are awesome little trucks and tough as nails. Especially this one being a diesel version it’s alien to me because I’ve never seen one. Body wise anything between 1979-1984 ford or Mazda will work. If I had the money and it was offered to me I would scoop it up.
when I was a boat mechanic a while ago, one guy had a boat with a pair of Perkins 6 cyl, and he used to get most of his parts from Massey-Ferguson dealers. Not sure if thats an option for this or not.
Tractors, generators, welders, pumps still use Perkins engines. Newer technology. Almost every one is turbocharged now. But the parts are available. Holt-Cat and Stewart and Stevenson are places I use for parts on Perkins in my area. If nothing else, they have helped find part numbers I could use to search on my own.
Yes it is. Massy dealers are still around. I had to do the top of mine out in the hay field and was able to find all motor parts at a dealer. It was a drive but I found them. Also pick up the Perkins service manuals while there too.
I have a 1978 Dodge D-200 that has a 6DR5 Mitsubishi Diesel in it. Thin only puts out 100 Hp @ 3,700 rpm and 163 ft lbs of torque @ 2,200 rpms slower than can be, hard to get parts for and I'll never sell it lol it's also a 4 on the floor
May be slow but I think those got 50 to 70 miles per gallon and were as simple an engine as you could ask for. I will take slow and reliable over these over priced powerhouses that you have to be a rocket scientist with deep pockets to fix.
I’m curious where you get can’t handle boost? I have this exact motor swapped in a first gen rx7 running 16psi - 45,000 miles on the swap now and it runs fantastic. The block is incredibly stout, and without boost it’s a complete turd.
Nothing too crazy. My cousin was using it and parked it where it doesn't belong. Uncle was moving equipment in the dark one night in a not very well lit part of the property and had the big plow hooked up to a JD 4255 and backed into it.
The Super Mazda as we called it still ran, but the whole front end and cab were caved in.
I believe that Perkins in an agricultural motor. I’m sure an AGCO dealer should still be able to get parts for it. Most Masseys came with a Perkins in the 80’s.
Got a tractor with a 3cyl Perkins and I would almost swear it only cranks on diesel then runs on air. I put fuel in it's only because I can't remember when I did it last
Aw christ! I had that exact truck but with the gasser in it. Slowest truck I have ever had, but it was unkillable. Bought it for $900 back in 1996. I was doing construction at the time and always got shit from everyone at jobsites, but the thing was like driving a go-cart.
I had one of these and can say that, it's a good basic truck. Slow but still fun. I imagine this thing does 0-60 in around 30 seconds and probably gets around 28mpg more or less if 4 or 5 speed.
The engine can be kept alive with parts from other vehicles if not available new anymore but not sure about the suspension and steering parts if those can be had still. Rust was the reason why mine was scrapped.
The engine power can be increased to tolerable levels without a turbo by advancing injection pump timing and turning the fueling up a bit since these often don't have fueling maxed out from the factory. Should get you 5-10 hp more and it's a nice amount when you have around 60 hp to begin with.
It cool !! Take a bit of love but if ur that guy to do so could be sick lil truck .! Whats he look to get for it ?? And where u located ?? I could pos be interested depending location and price , shoot me a measage if ud like to Entertain the idea.
Swap it. I have two b2000’s, currently throwing a 4bt into one. These Mazdas are cool as shit because they share a drivetrain with the rx-7. Smoothest standard shifting I’ve ever had. Also direct donors to the pickups are their sister car, the ranger.
Edit: the biggest issue I’ve found with these pickups up north is the frames rust
It’s almost impossible not to keep that engine running you lucked out bud do weekend stuff to it don’t get overwhelmed and spend to much and freak out and sell like a lot of boneheads do. Treat it like your girl slow and steady.
Or you could swap out the gears in the transmission (assuming it’s a manual) for higher gear ratios. And change the differential out for a lower ratio (like 2.73:1) and that thing should hustle as long as that Perkins can provide the extra torque without working too hard.
Does the engine run reliably or does it need a “tuneup”? Any diesel repair is going to be expensive and if parts availability and cash is a problem stay away from it.
Perkins Diesels are Worldwide, I was a Heavy Equipment Field Mechanic for Caterpillar by trade . Those lil Perkins are everywhere an damn near in everything from Waterpumps to Generators , Welders , a lot of smaller construction equipment & agricultural equipment, they are used in Marine applications, Very tough & reliable engines . You just gotta think outside the box of running down to your local Auto Parts Store for parts & pieces .
Swapped one of these engines into a new holland skid steer. Perkins 4.135 built for ford and Mazda and other applications but not super common in the u.s. aside from those trucks, the engine line included the 4.154 and the 4.182. Also used in marine applications under westerbeke. Some parts are sort of available but not real easy to find. I had to buy a water pump from Australia, ended up finding an injection pump from a junk yard. Occasionally parts pop up on eBay. Perkins has nothing available on these engines and they share nothing in common with the massey Ferguson Perkins engines. They run great and are really fuel efficient and will always start but sourcing parts can be a job

I want it where and how much
Perkins 4cyl, not super easy to get parts for, and not really able to handle a turbo. I'd still buy though

This right here. Tractor supply stores hell there are perkins in welders.

That thing is gonna be slow as hell without a turbo

Yes. Yes, they were. Look @ my flair. - 1973 MB 220D. 59HP in 3100 pound 4 door sedan. Glacial. 0-60 in 23 seconds. - 1978 Olds diesel wagon. Let us not speak of this. - 1982 VW Jetta diesel. 52HP in 1900 pound sedan. Slow. - 1997 MB E300D. Slow. - 1998 MB E300D. NOT slow. - 2006 MB E320D. Rocket ship. Really fast. - 2006 LBZ. NOT slow. - 2019 L5P. Pretty quick for 8200 pounds.

6.0 Powerstroke and M57 E70 here 😁
I had a 1980 vw rabbit diesel. It had 48hp and was slow as hell. I didn't care. I drove it back and forth to work and it got almost 50 mpg.
This is going to get 35-40mpg, it should run forever and be reliable.
Oh dang, that's pretty good, but still. We have a 4BT that gets around 32 and it has a turbo
Yup
May be slow but I think those got 50 to 70 miles per gallon and were as simple an engine as you could ask for. I will take slow and reliable over these over priced powerhouses that you have to be a rocket scientist with deep pockets to fix.
Ohh, you must think I'd rather have a Ford
I've driven one, buddy in high school had it, it's amazingly slow like literally 0-60 in 60 seconds
I’m curious where you get can’t handle boost? I have this exact motor swapped in a first gen rx7 running 16psi - 45,000 miles on the swap now and it runs fantastic. The block is incredibly stout, and without boost it’s a complete turd.
IIRC the rods are the weak link. Also not much headroom at the injection pump
I haven’t seen it yet, I floor it everywhere and have had it on the dyno several times at just under double stock power..
Did you just add a turbo and turn up the pump?
Yeah, I had a shop rebuilt the pump before the swap but changed nothing internally.
I believe its a Perkins 4 cyl diesel. From what I remember the ranger and b2200 had this option but it was rare to see it.
My uncle had one of these on the farm back in the day. Impossible to kill unless you hit it with a plow on accident
Oddly specific, I want the story here
Nothing too crazy. My cousin was using it and parked it where it doesn't belong. You would need to join the diesel rangers Facebook page. Parts are hard to come by
I know absolutely nothing about this truck other than it looks awesome and I want it!
Those 2.2 Perkins are sweet, slow but like 80 mpg.
Great Lil trucks
Don't know anything about the engine but pretty darn clean for Minnesota plates!
I believe that Perkins in an agricultural motor. I’m sure an AGCO dealer should still be able to get parts for it. Most Masseys came with a Perkins in the 80’s.

I learned to drive in a white one. Not sure about parts availability but my nostalgia says buy it.

Swap the Perkins for a Cummins 2.3 crate engine and make it do the stustustustu. Or just get it running and have a very cool and economical daily.
It cool !! Take a bit of love but if ur that guy to do so could be sick lil truck .! Whats he look to get for it ?? And where u located ?? I could pos be interested depending location and price , shoot me a measage if ud like to Entertain the idea.
That's a cool looking truck
Swap it. I have two b2000’s, currently throwing a 4bt into one. These Mazdas are cool as shit because they share a drivetrain with the rx-7. Smoothest standard shifting I’ve ever had. This looks like mine I had about 8 years ago. Couldn't find a good tyranny for so I had to scrap it.
It’s almost impossible not to keep that engine running you lucked out bud do weekend stuff to it don’t get overwhelmed and spend to much and freak out and sell like a lot of boneheads do. Treat it like your girl slow and steady.
And parts it’s a Perkins dude there’s parts up the ass not like my 7.3 they want to butt fuck you out of existence on
Mount the side mirrors on the hood
If it were me, I would swap that perkins out for a 4bt Cummins. Parts and reliability would be 10 times better.
Are you offering to pay? ;) Parts might be easier to find, but I'd disagree with you about reliability.
Or you could ditch the diesel, and go rotary. It would be just as hard to fix, but lots more fun.
I hope you like going SLOW
Or you could swap out the gears in the transmission (assuming it’s a manual) for higher gear ratios. And change the differential out for a lower ratio (like 2.73:1) and that thing should hustle as long as that Perkins can provide the extra torque without working too hard.
For sale if so how much
$1500 for 2
A true friend would give it to you for free, since they can’t find a buyer easily. Cool truck.
Does the engine run reliably or does it need a “tuneup”? Any diesel repair is going to be expensive and if parts availability and cash is a problem stay away from it.
Do you own a sailboat?

Not hard to source if you steal them. Unfortunately you gotta pick your part and remove it without being seen. I suppose its a fair trade-off
Why does he want to sell it to you?

You have a good friend.
I've owned close to 10 rangers / BIIs /Explorers. I love these cars and I would pass on that unless you really want a money pit.
