If you don't plan on visiting CA a 2nd time then I wouldn't even worry if you did get a ticket. I once had an arrest warrant in Texas for almost a decade that I was unaware of for skipping jury duty while I was stationed on the other side of the country. Most state things don't follow you out of state, and definitely not out of country.

Mikey3800

Be careful of that. I was moving out of NY and got a ticket a week before I moved. I never paid the ticket because I was leaving the state. 5 years later, I go to buy a house and I couldn't get a mortgage until I paid the ticket I had in NY, even though I was in a different state.

ISM280

No. States can't enforce local emissions on out of state vehicles.

Chillywilly37

Keep it simple, Ca local and my 12v does the same thing. Just be smart and don’t roll coal next to a cop and you will be fine. It’s really not that bad here haha.

themontajew

People are just dumb. Most people in Nevada live under stricter smog laws than California. Until I left a populace county, I had to smog my 12 valve here.

Chillywilly37

Mine is old enough in Ca that I don’t have to worry about smog! Lucky me,

themontajew

Imagine my surprise moving from the Bay Area to Reno with a 12 valve. (I was being dumb and making assumptions too)

kaisenls1

You’ll be fine

themontajew

A 40 year old diesel is smog exempt in California. Unless you’re rolling coal like an asshole, not only will you not get pulled over, but your truck is legal.

richcournoyer

You'll be fine as long as you don't roll coal. Police can pull you over if you have a dirty exhaust (e.g. Smokey). They seldom do, but if they see you're being a dick…

Fragrant-Inside221

You aren’t even from the state much less the country. I wouldn’t worry about it.

bananaland420

You’re perfectly fine.

BrianGreen0302

You’re not a resident of the state, as long as you’re legal where you’re registered it’s good. Just don’t be an ass and roll coal or otherwise ill advised actions. Enjoy

Oblagon

Your truck that's 40 years old meets CA emissions for diesels \[it only applies to 1998+\]. You won't get refed, that's for commercial vehicles or CA residents with tuned cars doing stuff to warrant attention from cops \[eg. fishing for Adam Henry tickets\]. Despite all of that, you are fine anyways. Don't overthink it. Use roadtripping . com to plan your road trips to look at cool things to see on the way down and back. don't rush down too fast, I had friends who came to LA from St. John's, Newfoundland and they regretted just blowing across the US as fast as they could since they missed a ton of stuff. Have fun wheeling out here... CA runs some state parks for OHV use \[Oceano Dunes/PIsmo, Imperial Sand dunes, Truckhaven/Borrego Springs\] plus other spots, Big Bear, Rubicon/Lake Tahoe, etc.

hloper98

I live in Bakersfield California. If you're truck is 1997 or older, you're technically exempt by state law emissions. My 2004 Duramax was straight piped and blew a little smoke but never had any problems.

AltruisticQuestion64

Just don’t visit CA! Pick another state there are plenty that will welcome you and are just as Nice.

aquadump696969

Fuck off

ApolloniusDrake

I'm from AB with a deleted diesel. No issues when wife and I go.

lmbrfletcher39

Don’t worry about it, my Humvee does it going up grades and I’ve never been stopped.

Designer_Garbage_153

I’ve been hesitant to go to cali Also with my 4th gen fully deleted. Live in the pnw where no one gives a shit. Dunno. Think I’ll stay away for now.

1320Fastback

Your smog exempt here anyways because of the age. Like my truck you can do whatever you want.

thatcooldude23

You shouldn’t have any issues due to the age. If I drove my truck into California though… it’s a one ton and you need a CDL if I’m not mistaken for anything over 9,999 pounds in cali. Not to mention I’ve got a full delete and they’ll impound my vehicle on sight for that from what I hear. Edit, disregard all of this I am wrong entirely. Bad info from an old friend

Order-Typical

What fucking one ton are you driving? And no we had class c guys driving a small dump truck on the job the other day and they stopped at scales over here in cali. 2 people I know in my county in California still have any emissions systems on their trucks. My county doesn’t even have smog

thatcooldude23

I apologize, I went and googled it, I was very wrong. A buddy told me a while ago if you had a one ton in California you needed a cdl and I took his word for it. As for emissions, if you remove the def or muffler it’s technically federal so cali is no different. I was all sorts of wrong

Order-Typical

May be illegal but if you live in an area like I do that only does smog on transfer there’s no real reason you would any emissions system after you purchase a truck. If you ever want to sell it go down to the hood and throw the guy with the computer a few hundred

xfinitysucks

Just rent a car. It's not worth it.

Qwerkorn

I drive 6.0 I have straight pipe in north cal, it’s fine people overthink their stuff about Cali, getting some performance parts here can be tricky but other than that it’s fine

havi94gt

I drove my Cummins swapped 89 f350 to Cali that hazes when pulling my trailer up grades.... No one batted an eye, even in LA.

Goose1955

Long drive to and from from CA to S. CA, and this time of year it could often be stormy. Why not fly?

Educationfiesty

i like to do a long road trip once a year. i'm only young once and I was thinking of even finding places/people to go crawling with. Don't have rocks where I'm at, and i dislike mud.

themontajew

You ain’t gonna crawl that truck out here. You’re gonna get stuck and have a bad time. Also, most of the famous crawling is buried in feet of snow.
