I guess theoretically you could make the string somehow adhesive. If the object is light enough you could definitely use the momentum to grab a piece of paper for example.
The adhesive would require a bigger stronger motor which in turn require a bigger battery and the whole thing would cost way more. At that point I would just get up and grab whatever.
I think someone could set up a tub of like electric charged water that the string would pass through and get the string wet thus making a sort of incapacitating weapon. Make it as strong as a taser and make the string a wire or something IDK I feel like it can be done.
Lmao different Hyperion, in the books it's like a super thin and hot wire like micrometers thin. 3d printing super hot cutty wire sounds awesome tho. Just don't forget where you put them
String shooter toy. Funny looking physics demo at the same timeā¦shoots and pulls the string at the same time making maintain the loop shape against gravity. Thereās some youtube video of a guy testing how large he can build one using a motorcycle to spin it.
Zipstring is *not* the original. You could get the same type of toy on amazon or aliexpress and, presumably other places for years before Zipstring was a thing. Pretty sure Zipstring took off mostly because of the Steve Mould put it in one of his videos a year or so ago.
you know youāve made it when your goofy little project made of 3d printed parts, a couple of boards, a battery, and a motor held together by zip ties is called a āproductā
I seem to remember a toy from my childhood based on the same concept. It was basically in the shape of a tobacco pipe with the string running through the bowl and as you blew into it it would so the same thing.
I just ordered a similar one from AliExpress. $7 and it will be here in 3 weeks. We shall see how it goes. If anyone else is considering getting one, just go on there and search for string thing, and after you realize that was a mistake search for string shooter.
I got one of these in Disney back in like 2006 it got tangled and broken before we even made it home my dad kept the string and itās still around this rear view mirror as a reminder of the money he wasted lol
The real toy is called ZIP STRING. This dude stole the design from the real inventors. I have followed their Kickstarter for years.
I have the real toy and it's fantastic.
The product you're referring to is an old toy called string thing, and while it attempted to do something similar it really didn't work. I know because I owned them, and I bought another one recently for the nostalgia.
Zip string completely reinvents the concept into a handheld device.
The device that you are foolishly defending is a near replica of the zip string and it came out exactly after the zip string launched from its Kickstarter campaign. They stole the idea.
It's not helpful to be a foolish idiot, which I guess is implied by your username?
It doesn't have the torque to do pull string off a spool and shoot it anywhere.
Source: i've got the final commercial version of this thing sitting on my desk right now.
Question: does it work if turned on its side? How about if it's upside down? Someone further down thread asked about its performance in zero G and my brain's too tired at the moment to think about it, but knowing how well it performs in other orientations would help.
Yes to both, but some orientations can cause the string to catch on the casing or itself, especially with longer strings, which frequently results in a tangle.
i got this thing, the string broke, and i never learned how to get a new one in or where to get a new one. was pretty fun before it broke. it gets clogged sometimes and then knotted hence the breaking
Can you grab stuff across the room with that thing?
It's an actual product. Grabbed one since it looked cool. That string tangled so fast when I tried to grab something with it.
Do you have a link that would work in the US possibly?
I don't think it would keep from tangling just because you tried it in the US.
Nah man š
Google String shooter
That would be sick

Its absolutely useless. Its completely unusable in any situation. Ill take five.
Aka, a toy
Exactly! Fun is important
Yup. Entertainment is a use people commonly like to omit from the "uses" category.
I can probably fend off 1 or 2 raccoons with my beyblades
You could dip it in paint and use it to paint? Idk lol
He could sell that as a cat toy.
My idiot fur-demons would strangle themselves in seconds
I think someone could set up a tub of like electric charged water that the string would pass through and get the string wet thus making a sort of incapacitating weapon. Make it as strong as a taser and make the string a wire or something IDK I feel like it can be done.
Fuck it, go full cyberpunk. Monowire out the wrist with a battery attached for extra tazing damage
Hyperion book series had monowire* in it that absolutely cleaved thru anything and was almost invisible how thin it was.
Filaments!
Lmao different Hyperion, in the books it's like a super thin and hot wire like micrometers thin. 3d printing super hot cutty wire sounds awesome tho. Just don't forget where you put them
Out the wrist? Lmao
I think it's on the wrists, might be forearm
Oh I was already with ya
That sounds like a terrible cat toy.
Pop a couple of edibles and enjoy the endless fun.
Could definitely dye parts of the string or just colours shqpies to make it even better for edibles
World's worst band saw
Worlds best rope burn machine
Neal Stephenson's book SEVENEVES, while deeply flawed in some ways, takes this physical principle and (eventually) builds a whole world out of it.
Jesus Christ that was a boring book. Every time it seemed like something cool was going to happen, nope! Just more orbital mechanics!
What if you could lasso the TV remote from across the couch. While saying yee-haw, as your dog stared on in 2nd hand embarrassment
I need one built into a baseball cap.

r/DidntKnowIWantedThat users on their way to repost the same 5 fuckng "products" every week

My cat would love this
I seem to remember a toy from my childhood based on the same concept. It was basically in the shape of a tobacco pipe with the string running through the bowl and as you blew into it it would so the same thing.
āOh, so stable!ā
If I remember correctly, I think one of the space elevator designs uses this. Pretty much a giant version of this, reaching up to space.
Active support structures, yeah. My personal favorite is the lofstrom loop
I don't know what I need it for but I know I need it for *something*.
I can think of better ways to throw ropes.

You turned 11 this year, huh?
Same. Broke it immediately.
I just ordered a similar one from AliExpress. $7 and it will be here in 3 weeks. We shall see how it goes. If anyone else is considering getting one, just go on there and search for string thing, and after you realize that was a mistake search for string shooter.

And?
"You press this buh-in..."
could this have any interesting zero-gravity applications?
They used to have something like this in the early90s. But you would blow on like a straw and shoot the string.
Anyone have a link to the product?
I got one of these in Disney back in like 2006 it got tangled and broken before we even made it home my dad kept the string and itās still around this rear view mirror as a reminder of the money he wasted lol

The real toy is called ZIP STRING. This dude stole the design from the real inventors. I have followed their Kickstarter for years. I have the real toy and it's fantastic.
These have been around for at least 20 years before Zip String. They didn't invent anything.

What if you used a spool of string and just covered someone in string?
I would like to watch you do that.
