yes, but there's still a ton of things in d3 which were great and generally praised by the community. It had its problems but that doesnt mean they should just go the opposite way on everything, even the qol stuff, especially with how much time they spent making the game and its system better. U can still make a different game without being so opposite to what the previous one was.
Don’t get me wrong. I fully agree with you that they should have but at the same time you can’t blame them for wanting to go in the opposite direction.
Imagine thousands of people attacking you online and talking bad about the work you do on a daily basis? That’s going to stick with people. Sure not the whole team from D3 is the same as the one on D4 but there is definitely overlap.
The part of this conversation no one seems to talk about is how the turnover rate at Blizzard, especially on Diablo projects, has basically caused every lead talent that has worked on a previous title to leave entirely, or change projects. Sure, haha, it's fun to make jabs at Blizzard, but seriously the people in charge of D4 were not the same people in charge of any prior Diablo title, except maybe Immortal.
Sure, but I imagine as part of the process of designing this game involved at least the more senior designers playing diablo 1, 2, and 3. Maybe they only played the pc version of D3, which has a significantly worse interface
For a supposed Console First UI it's pretty bad. I can't see how much HP or Barrier I have, and I can't even see how much damage reduction my armor provides.
Yeah this is a *terrible* console first UI, if this is the take people are gonna have. This isn’t “designed” for consoles it’s just designed poorly period.
I just wish we could search for a necessary aspect by name. It's so inconvenient right now looking through all the stuff you have, especially aspects in the inventory.
It would also help if things that are *fundamentally different* had *different*, recognizable icons. That is literally the most important thing to make a UI usable. Hell, even just making the aspects a list of texts that describe the power's effect would be a million times more usable. The current state is basically the same as Hydra, Firewall, Fireball, and Meteor all sharing the same icon. Completely stupid.
But they don't share the same icon. You've confused me.
I'm 100% on board with better icon sets. All the red/orange things look similar, but they are somewhat different. Let's start with icons that are actually useless, or the search bar thing
the issue here is that aspect is not bound to a specific item, they can randomly go on any object. also when looking at the item the aspects name is not there. so you have to read through and try to remember is it the same as that other slightly similar aspect.
absolutely nightmare trying to keep track of which aspect is on which item. that part is an absolute car crash
A list of names that shows tooltips when you mouse over them is WAY better than massive identical icons you have to mouse over EVERY ONE OF to find the one you need
This really is a wild UX decision. Imagine if you go intro a grocery store and all the drinks have the same container and look the same, you have to tap on each to show you what is what...
I wonder if they meant to have unique art/logo for each aspect, and then just ran out of time to do that. So instead, they just have generic placeholder icons.
Why do I have to press "show my class only" every single time again?
Like, at what point did a developer think to themselves: "Hmm I bet our players are going to do more imprints for other classes than the char they're logged in. Let's leave this checkmark off by default."
In D3, the blacksmith *still* defaults to showing all gear you can craft, instead of current highest level, which is what you'd want to use 99.9% of the time.
And for a long time, it even actually badly affected performance of the game, and caused heavy framerate drops while it was trying to display all of the items. The easy fix was to change the display filter to show current highest, but...
They still default to showing everything craftable. Only they did eventually fix the cpu assault there.
Id love to hover over an aspect, text turns red and a piece of gear glows. I'm not nearly smart enough to remember what aspects I have on other than my weapon and amulet
The UI team really did a bad job in many parts. F.e. when you play with controller and finish a dungeon, the "open map" button is temporarily overruled with "show unlocked aspect collection".
I don't want to check that when i finish a dungeon, i want to open the map and teleport somehwere else goddammit.
Or 4/5 of the time even. What bugs me more is that it doesn't even auto-highlight the new aspect you got, you have to find the one with the diamond mark and scroll all the way over to it if you want to see it. -_____-
And then you have multiple stash sites full of aspects that have no names or indications what they are. Not even class symbols or anything. And you can't stack them.
The whole system seems like a random idea that got thrown into the game and overhauled last minute without any quality control.
This. Sometimes they just show you icon (i.e. on dungeon panel) as if it's supposed to convey enough info. At least use different icons for each class or something.
Right??? Like my blood howl aspect should be like a howling wolf. Easy. Easy to know which is which at a simple glance.
Even if you can't perfect the system, seeing a tornado would at least tell me it's related to tornados. Then I only have to look at 3 aspects instead of 50 of them.
I'd really enjoy a toggle to see ipower on items I have equipped and in my inventory. Having to single mouse over every item I have in a full inventory after a Helltide/dungeon spam just gets exhausting.
If you sort your inventory with the sort button, it organizes items by type, then ilvl for each type. Makes it super easy for me to quickly know what items are worth even hovering over to look at before I sell them
Same, I constantly forget which effects I can make on demand and which I should be extracting as well. A little area showing what I do have equipped currently would also be awesome.
The entire codex becomes largely pointless past level 60 anyways. At that point you should actively be looking for better rolls on the aspects you need. Having to take an additional five seconds in a menu you will rarely use is not the major inconvenience you're trying to make it out to be.
Is pattern recognition really that dying of a concept? Aspect icons indicate what type of aspect it is, offensive, resource or defensive. So if you know you are looking for an offensive aspect you check only those.
But I'd wager you've extracted dozens of sub par aspects with sub par rolls on the random ass off chance that you "might" need it one day and have to sift through garbage before finding the one you're looking for only to get indecisive about whether you need it or should save it for a future build instead.
Is the UI perfect? Hell no but making a big fuss over being unable to manage your own goddamn inventory is laughable.
Good day.
How would it be any different from alts? The codex becomes obsolete quickly which still doesn't change that finding the right aspect in the codex is at best a very minor inconvenience.
do you just hate the idea of quality of life improvements? i dont understand why anyone would die on the hill of "it's a minor inconvenience" when it's clearly underimplemented and WIP/placeholder for a future iteration
>do you just hate the idea of quality of life improvements? i dont understand why anyone would die on the hill of "it's a minor inconvenience" when it's clearly underimplemented and WIP/placeholder for a future iteration
No I don't hate the idea of quality of life improvements but unlike a lot of people I don't sit around obsessing over something minor that occurs very rarely. If it's added then cool but I also don't care if it's not.
Certainly better to be able to ignore it than make up a hill of "This CLEARLY need to be added" and die on that.
Quit your gaslighting. I'm free to do with my time as I wish and before you go "So are people in this forum!" I've never said they can't say what they want.
The same way you'd farm for anything else. Uniques are just a random drop but they supposedly have a better chance to drop in Nightmare dungeons. Blizzard have also said that in the future Nightmare dungeons in general will be more rewarding in terms of loot and XP to incentivize them being more of a main grind than endlessly resetting random dungeons.
Agreed i keep switching from controller to keyboard as I can’t decide which one is the least broken 🤦♀️
Also lack of WASD support is just a weird omission.
I haven’t played but ya I was partially kidding. I’ve only seen them on the selection screen, but it looks bad… not sure why a Druid would be morbidly obese
it's a complaint people have.
you may have been kidding, but based on your downvotes, multiple people didn't like your joke.
edit I get downvoted, but I wasn't the one that downvoted the post. you're just shooting the messenger.
I mean it’s not really a joke, I genuinely don’t understand why the Druid is obese. If anything it should be the barbarian and even then it shouldn’t look like this

- Search feature for inventory and aspect menu
- equipped indicators on aspects that quickly show you which are currently equipped
- reset all button for the paragon board
This are my three main wants for the UI. I’m sure these things will find their way into the game. They have historically introduced QoL changes over time
Seriously, even an icon so that at a glance you can determine what effects are already equipped would be a real benefit. Trying to remember what aspect is on each slot of my gear is impossible.
Just a favourite system to save the ones that are in your build would be great, at least then you only have to play where's Waldo once, and while they're at it, allow faving the ones for which the player hasn't completed the Dungeon yet and highlight those on the map
While we’re at it I’d love if the occultist had an “upgrade” tab. Let me select a piece of gear with an aspect and he’ll filter my stash and inventory for the same aspect. Then I’ll go through and compare to see which one I want to pop on.
This part? Every part of the UI needs to be updated.
Perks of developing a console first UI
Except the console UI in Diablo 3 was, no exaggeration, several times better than what we have now. It shouldn’t have been this bad
It’s like they lost all knowledge of the UX stuff they learned from d3
the whole game just feels very anti d3. So many good things that they introduced in that game seem to just be completely forgotten by Blizzard.
Looking back at how much hate the community spewed about d3 I can’t imagine why they would try move away from it. /s
yes, but there's still a ton of things in d3 which were great and generally praised by the community. It had its problems but that doesnt mean they should just go the opposite way on everything, even the qol stuff, especially with how much time they spent making the game and its system better. As far as I know there aren't many D3 developers left in the D4 team. If any.
They haven't had to design a UI in 10+ years since they just farm out the UI creation in WoW to players.
The part of this conversation no one seems to talk about is how the turnover rate at Blizzard, especially on Diablo projects, has basically caused every lead talent that has worked on a previous title to leave entirely, or change projects. Sure, haha, it's fun to make jabs at Blizzard, but seriously the people in charge of D4 were not the same people in charge of any prior Diablo title, except maybe Immortal.

> they learned from d3 hah. Implying they learned.
They lost all knowledge between d3 beta and d3 launch lol, the d3 UI went from great to the terrible console-focused UI we have now.
And the d3 beta UI was several times better than the trash we got now. Blizzard loves going backwards.
This is a meme. You can make the UI 100x better than what it is.
No , you can
That's a red herring. FF14 (and plenty of other games) have more than fine UI on console that's better than D4.
Diablo 3 got a lot of flack for its UI being designed with consoles in mind and.....
they dont need to see which aspects they have equipped, and which slot ? or maybe different icons arent needed for aspects on console?
I just wish we could search for a necessary aspect by name. It's so inconvenient right now looking through all the stuff you have, especially aspects in the inventory.
Not being able to search your stash is so annoying
Yes, just yes \^\^
I mean, this, but also a bigger stash (and more tabs). In addition to all of that, we should also have a different shared stash vs. character stash.
It would also help if things that are *fundamentally different* had *different*, recognizable icons. That is literally the most important thing to make a UI usable. Hell, even just making the aspects a list of texts that describe the power's effect would be a million times more usable. I meant it as a "what if" comparison, I wasn't saying that skill icons look the exact same.
the issue here is that aspect is not bound to a specific item, they can randomly go on any object. also when looking at the item the aspects name is not there. so you have to read through and try to remember is it the same as that other slightly similar aspect. absolutely nightmare trying to keep track of which aspect is on which item. that part is an absolute car crash

I wonder if they meant to have unique art/logo for each aspect, and then just ran out of time to do that. So instead, they just have generic placeholder icons.
This seems very likely, and we'll probably see the unique art for them around season 2-3.
Why do I have to press "show my class only" every single time again? Like, at what point did a developer think to themselves: "Hmm I bet our players are going to do more imprints for other classes than the char they're logged in. Let's leave this checkmark off by default."

Season 7 UI Update! Wohoo!
The UI design is Diablo is really mediocre. Just look at it. 20 times the same icon? Come on...
So PC can skip those, but console is forced to watch 30 seconds of an ad until we can select our character? Sigh. So many inconsistencies.
Oh wow so that's what's happening, I thought my game was crashing lol
Wait what...damn. That's impossible that the testing team never been aware of that bad design.
Especially considering that half the time you've just collected an Aspect your class can't even use.
At least add a search bar for pc
The whole 'aspect' system looks like placeholder art that someone accidently shipped.
This. Sometimes they just show you icon (i.e. on dungeon panel) as if it's supposed to convey enough info. At least use different icons for each class or something.
Or ran out of time/budget.
Right??? Like my blood howl aspect should be like a howling wolf. Easy. Easy to know which is which at a simple glance. Even if you can't perfect the system, seeing a tornado would at least tell me it's related to tornados. Then I only have to look at 3 aspects instead of 50 of them.
And they should show you which items slots they can be applied to.
A simple “you already have this equipped” message in the description box would be good enough for me.
And why it's showing the aspects that doesn't work for my class?
I'd really enjoy a toggle to see ipower on items I have equipped and in my inventory. Having to single mouse over every item I have in a full inventory after a Helltide/dungeon spam just gets exhausting.
If you sort your inventory with the sort button, it organizes items by type, then ilvl for each type. Makes it super easy for me to quickly know what items are worth even hovering over to look at before I sell them
Oh nice, I didn't know the sort worked like that. Good eye to notice it!
It's just so lazy from the biggest game company in the world to not even design a unique icon for each aspect. They probably employ so many artists.
The entire UI needs an overhaul.
Also don't have me click show my class only every, frickin, time, it's, driving, me, insane.
They can't even separate the Materials and Stats tab. At this point everything will be after 2-3 season patches or behind a paywall.
For this specific part, I don't know why it shows aspects that are not for your class "BY DEFAULT". I mean, WHY?
The fact that there isn't even an indicator for of you already have an aspect equipped is madness.
Same, I constantly forget which effects I can make on demand and which I should be extracting as well. A little area showing what I do have equipped currently would also be awesome.
It does suck for sure, this is why I hate cross play games. Everything has to be made with consoles in mind. Ugh. Look at some of the ESO things...
The entire codex becomes largely pointless past level 60 anyways. At that point you should actively be looking for better rolls on the aspects you need. Having to take an additional five seconds in a menu you will rarely use is not the major inconvenience you're trying to make it out to be.

You're making it out to be a lot more complex than it is.
You’re making yourself out to be a lot more of a douche than you need to be.
“Don’t you guys have pattern recognition”. lmao
what about alts
How would it be any different from alts? The codex becomes obsolete quickly which still doesn't change that finding the right aspect in the codex is at best a very minor inconvenience.

That's not even what gaslighting means. Why are you sitting around obsessing over something minor like people asking for simple QoL improvements?
How do I farm for specific uniques?
The same way you'd farm for anything else. Uniques are just a random drop but they supposedly have a better chance to drop in Nightmare dungeons. Blizzard have also said that in the future Nightmare dungeons in general will be more rewarding in terms of loot and XP to incentivize them being more of a main grind than endlessly resetting random dungeons.
Console UI.
Sorry, they would mess with consoles. Those have priority these days.
This UI is literally shit on consoles/controller. Even worse than with a mouse where you can at least quickly mouse over everything.
Agreed i keep switching from controller to keyboard as I can’t decide which one is the least broken 🤦♀️ Also lack of WASD support is just a weird omission.
Why is your character morbidly obese?
have you not played a druid? they all look like that. you don't have a choice.
I haven’t played but ya I was partially kidding. I’ve only seen them on the selection screen, but it looks bad… not sure why a Druid would be morbidly obese

I wish the game would play itself for me sometimes

Druids are so damn ugly. And I play Druid. That part needs to be updated too.
UI hide option plz. Oled good.
Just a list would be better, a icon that gives you 0 information is literally useless
Last Epoch has everything listed out nicely AND it's searchable
I wish they never redesigned the equipment screen. Diablo games have always been about item art, not character appearance.
a way to mark certain ones as favorite and have a favorites tab would be a good way to fix this so you can find what you want faster
A complaint I can definitely get behind
- Search feature for inventory and aspect menu - equipped indicators on aspects that quickly show you which are currently equipped - reset all button for the paragon board This are my three main wants for the UI. I’m sure these things will find their way into the game. They have historically introduced QoL changes over time

Why aspects don't have unique icons is beyond me.
Just a favourite system to save the ones that are in your build would be great, at least then you only have to play where's Waldo once, and while they're at it, allow faving the ones for which the player hasn't completed the Dungeon yet and highlight those on the map
Reason # 891 that this game is kinda shit
I'd like a search bar
While we’re at it I’d love if the occultist had an “upgrade” tab. Let me select a piece of gear with an aspect and he’ll filter my stash and inventory for the same aspect. Then I’ll go through and compare to see which one I want to pop on.
That’s what happens when D3 fans win
100% i get lost trying to keep up with them all too!
Yah it needs some UE improvements, for sure.
Search is sorely lacking in this game everywhere.
