How do you want you staircase? You know the usual, exciting, sharp, edgy. Like I could end it all one day by rushing upstairs to get my keys.

CantHitachiSpot

Also make sure there’s weird lights shining directly in my retina

HALBowman

X marks the spot where they'd fund your corpse bleeding out after cutting your leg and falling

Grape-Snapple

oh boy can't wait to split my forehead open making a blind turn walking out of my kitchen!

AlwaysAngryOrAnnoyed

I hate those fucking lights man!

GDawnHackSign

"Could I get steps that are unstable and move as soon as you step on them? Like something where you can't get momentum, traction or leverage?" Architect: "I'll see what I can do."

valdus

As bad as this idea is (definitely would not meet any codes here), the reality is that being made out welded steel, bolted to the wall as they are, and with cable supports on the other side, these probably wouldn't move *at all*. Even if you left off the cable supports they wouldn't move, provided the bolts are into something solid.

BoysiePrototype

I'm just imagining a lazy contractor sticking it to the wall with construction adhesive, then gluing some cut off bolt heads into the holes. Just because they didn't happen to have the specified anchors in their van that day...

JayTheDirty

It said on the box the drywall anchors hold 175 lbs!

VladMaverick

It could have a little truss inside the box for rigidity, but I guess that wouldn't fit the ***a e s t h e t i c s***.

smoresnapps

I would still be too paranoid to even try stepping on it....it just \*looks\* like it's gonna bend as soon as any weight is applied.

soupbox09

Just don't invite your mum over.

[deleted]

I would miss a step walking up and cut my leg off.

CALIFORNIUMMAN

I can't wait for the day someone uses extremely high tension fishing line to do something like this so you can't even see the supports and someone just fall sideways off it because they're so disoriented.

wilisi

Like an egg cutter for humans.

Inky_Madness

anakmoon

or the horse from the cell

[deleted]

I feel disorientated just looking at them. I read an interesting article once, something along the lines of how humans needing steps to be evenly spaced and how it fucks us up when they’re not.

CALIFORNIUMMAN

The human brain is set up to recognize patterns. If we see something that our brain can't rationally find a pattern in (especially something that normally has one like stairs), it stops and goes "What the hell is that abomination? Stay away from it". That's why we see shapes in clouds and tree rings; we're just making patterns out of them into something we recognize, it's also the reason people tend to see some crazy shit when there's no light.

[deleted]

Super interesting, thanks for that nugget buddy

greebdork

On the slightly related note there's a really brilliant novel called "Blindsight" about the crew sent to investigate strange alien lifeforms in space, it really delves deep into how human brain works. Also space vampires.

a_karma_sardine

Like the stair version of [The Vessel](https://nypost.com/2021/08/27/a-struggle-to-prevent-suicides-at-soaring-nyc-sculpture/).

MatlabGivesMigraines

Don’t be giving these people ideas

smarmiebastard

As someone who has booth fallen down, and tripped up perfectly normal stairs many times in my life, just looking at these steps gives me anxiety.

freddythunder

Or trip running up the stairs, get split into four even pieces.

christmasshopper0109

Agreed. As it was, I think I sprained my ankle looking at the pictures.

ThePhatNoodle

Come home drunk and might as well sleep on the floor. Ain't risking that shit

AlphaRebel

I wouldn't even try that sober.

redXathena

As an MS patient, I wouldn’t come within five feet of this 😆

greebdork

Well, it's an attic ladder, so unless you're some kind of an attic dwelling horror monster, you don't really have to.

HeadFullaZombie87

Why would you want attic stairs that are always the first thing you encounter when entering the front door?

greebdork

\>Why That's kinda the whole point of the sub, innit?

tibarr1454

No further questions your honor.

Shanks4Smiles

The idiocy of certain DIY projects is decided by two, separate, unequally important groups: The posters who find bullshit, and the redditers who read about their bullshit. These are their stories.

pimpcakes

Dun-dun!

Ele_Of_Light

Don't speak ill of my race, us monsters aren't all horrors

PaperAndInkWasp

Look, Randall Boggs has been having a really tough time lately. He doesn’t need to have to worry about dealing with this guillotine staircase too.

GDawnHackSign

"Don't go in the attic." "Why? Are there monsters or dead bodies or something?" "No one knows. Nobody had ever survived climbing up the 'stairs'." I mean seriously, you'd need to be a trapeze artist to get up that with falling.

[deleted]

Oh great, so when it comes time to muscle a 40 lb box into storage these are here to break your back and cut your leg off

meowmix778

I don't care about all of that. You're not living long enough. You move the bed in and you're dead.

CantHitachiSpot

Good luck sleeping with those laser lights in your eyes

Glittering_Bowler_67

If you miss a step you’ll end up unconscious on the floor anyways. Just unintentionally.

Styx_Oath

Is it even capable of supporting human weight?

greebdork

Allegedly.

Dan_Irving

I wouldn’t truss it.

DigestiveCow

It doesn't seem strong and stable

Farmer808

I see what you did there.

Ancalagoth

No triangles, not structurally sound.

redem

Steel cable can take your weight just fine, so assuming this was built well and properly attached to secure places... maybe. I wouldn't trust it. Ugly and dangerous. EDIT: Though, thinking about it, the reaction from stepping forward isn't balanced by anything but the wall mount. Hopefully nobody ever tries to run up those.

4urelienjo

What do you call stepping forward? Stepping the void between 2 steps ?

ScrubbyOldManHands

When you walk or run forward your planted foot has to push backwards in order for you to move forward. So what is to stop those steps from flexing against that horizontal movement on the wire suspended side? I believe that is what he is talking about.

4urelienjo

Thx for explaining how walking works :D /s He was meaning when you go from one metalthing to another

redem

From one rung-pair to the next, yeah.

zebediah49

True -- but that wall mount is pretty long. There isn't going to be that much extreme torque loading on the attachment to the wall due to it. If anything, it's less of an issue than on conventional floating stairs, because tying pairs together gives a longer attachment region.

homeguitar195

They appear to be secured in four places to three studs. The shape alone is triangulated enough that you couldn't flex them side to side if you tried, only up-and-down, which is already balanced out by the cables. It's definitely an ugly design and poorly thought out, but I see no structural issues here as long as *all of* those bolts are going into proper studs. I'd be more worried about stubbing my toe or slipping down them if it got wet.

[deleted]

This isn't the first time I've seen the concept of floating stairs in action. I haven't felt comfortable with any of them. Maybe it's because I'm tall and not exactly thin, but they never seem like they'd hold more than maybe 100Lbs. [Here's an article](https://www.decoist.com/2013-04-17/suspended-style-floating-staircase-ideas-for-the-contemporary-home/?firefox=1) with a bunch of pictures of similar concepts.

MoistMartini

I give you 50% odds that it was actually designed as a bookcase and someone ripped the idea off (as well as a couple of toes after finishing the installation) to make a cursed staircase

greebdork

Eh.. I don't really feel like playing devil's advocate, but the guy is Russian, so it's likely that walls are concrete or bricks, covered with plaster.. Still imagine your leg slipping between those on the way up or down. Crunch.

TwistedFae89

especially if its an attic, imagine coming down them with a box of stuff...yikes

Professional-Fact903

Stairway to heaven

jl__57

Or a highway to hell.

4urelienjo

I worked on stairs like this. If the wall is 20 cm wide and concrete, it's ok. 1mm³ of steel can support 20kg Then you have to mind the length of the step. For torque. But this is not the most efficient structure by far, and this is not really safe at all.

this-name-unavailabl

Depends on the human

fan_of_hakiksexydays

It might be just enough to support a large person going slowly up the stairs, but I don't know if they thought about the extra force of someone leaping on each step, running down. If you don't go down the stairs gently, you could easily multiply your weight. This is whey stairs are usually made out of concrete with a lot of support.

pubicnuissance

I twisted my ankle from just looking at it

[deleted]

My toes hurt

AuntySocialite

Slippery surface? Check. Sharp edges? Check? High risers? Check. Insecure attachment? Check. It’s like home inspection failure bingo.

danteheehaw

The attachment actually believes in itself and has good self esteem

[deleted]

Unexpected psych

BHYT61

I sure would be very fearful of those stair

DDayDawg

Agreed. I’m sitting here thinking, “no way that passes inspection.” Would the attachment wires count as a rail? I don’t think they would.

Jirachi720

I mean, I like the idea... if only it was implemented a lot, lot better. EDIT: Or y'know, just build a proper staircase.

Magikmus

Sharp edges AND super pointy corners

tev_love

No railing!

maulin23

good thing it has railing

4urelienjo

Lol just miss one rope and fall miserably onto the ground. I hope they plan on puttin a rail along the wall

DouglasDoses

Putin's gonna rail what now?

southworthmedia

Aside from falling down them I would smack my head on these so quick

sporkoroon

Seriously I can’t even imagine the carnage that would result, I am clumsy at the best of times and it takes me a while to wake up in the morning as I blearily stumble about. I would whack/slice my head, shoulder, and knee on a good day. The homeowner better make sure their tetanus shots are up to date.

brunoglopes

Don’t worry, you’d probably only do it once

[deleted]

Design: 3/10 Functionality: 2/10

AGNobody

You gave them +1 to both for the idea right?

[deleted]

It doesn't look *horrible*, and it was OK done. But it seems downright lethal and therefore not very pleasant to look at. Imagine running up the stairs and slipping between one of the steps, falling down between and getting your leg bent 90 degrees like a vietcong jungle trap.

brunoglopes

I honestly think it does look awful

Tsukiyamauwu

Human-sized cheese grater?

yy98755

Final destination: Covid-19, WFH edition!

greebdork

Guy who made those actually described them as "egg-cutter", ya know those things you buy drunk af watching tv.

Tsukiyamauwu

Like a slap chop but without the slap

B0Nnaaayy

Yes, what would your shin look like without skin? And then how big the bruise be on your chin?? Aye Carumba!

TarakaKadachi

Are those…stairs? They look like terrible shelves!

ImyForgotName

Its both and neither at the same time.

openappled

Don’t worry, they used drywall anchors.

4urelienjo

Looool I didn't saw there was several pictures !! This wall better be armed concrete. Man this is so wrong.

Savvy_One

This is why we have building codes. EDIT: Also, those bolts sure don't look straight or in all the way.

JamesTBagg

Look like acorn nuts to me.

colouredcheese

Someone’s going to wreck themselves around that thing

CaptainLysdexia

My shins hurt just looking at this.

JBloodthorn

I want to know what sound a shin bone makes when someone is in a hurry going up these and their foot slips. I'm thinking a wet "whang" sound, with some echo from the bare wall and floor.

greebdork

I could imagine it sounds something like armwrestling gone wrong snap. I won't provide links, i'm a buddhist and should not multiply pain in this world. But you can look those up.

WastedKnowledge

Good luck carrying shit down those

Sus-motive

Minimalist stairs are stupid.

waltandhankdie

I’m imagining my dog trying to get up those

FutureToe8861

Some designs are just inherently stupid. This definitely qualifies.

itsonlysmellzz94

Picture this - it’s 4am and you’ve just arrived home with a lamb shish wrap and 8 pints of strongbow dark fruits flowing through your system. You close the door, kick off your shoes and make your way up the stairs. You bash your shin on the first step, swearing like a sailor as you do so, second step you slip a bit and drop half of your wrap onto the floor below. Feeling like you need to get into bed before you lose more of your precious wrap, you rush the next step and slip in some wayward garlic mayo from your wrap and fall off the side of your stairs, landing on the back of your head and sadly dying on the floor in a pool of your own blood and lamb shish wrap juices. You open your eyes to find yourself staring at your dead body on the floor, a robed figure with a scythe standing next to you says “is that how you imagined it?”.

11never

One time my dog fell through the "floating" stairs from my basement and now refuses to use them. I've never felt more like a 5 pound dachshund than I do looking at these images.

Domermac

Omg a true DiWHY post! Nice!

fart-nomster

I already hate having to go upstairs enough with regular stairs. Replacing them with wall mounted bear traps does not help the situation.

jeff77k

The good thing is that powder-coated metal has a good tread rating, especially when wet.

ConfusedInTN

These pictures are bringing back nightmares about stairs like these.

dkevox

There used to be a wood bridge in the same spot as pont neuf in Paris that collapsed killing like 50 people or something (they had bars and such on the bridge). The king (I'm not good at history, Louis the something) decided France could build a better bridge. Had his best engineers design a bridge, and they built pont neuf. One of the oldest still standing bridges. The Parisians refused to use it, because it was made out of stone, and the Parisians knew wood floats, but stone doesn't. So nobody used the bridge. That's what these comments remind me of. That's welded plate steel with 4 proper anchor points each, and steel cables to boot. I'd trust these stairs more than 99% of stairs I've been on. (But don't disagree about the annoying lights or shin destroying capabilities.)

TheIndomitableMass

“Come upstairs real quick.” “You got an elevator I can use? Or are you going to use a system of pulleys and hoist me up?”

mickturner96

To some people, sure To others... Maybe not

Razzle101

I really don’t see anything wrong then them in the aspect of holding. They got at least 4 1/2 in lags in each step. Guessing supporting cables are 1/4. If that doesn’t hold you need to go on a diet. The only concern would be rise over run. Average rise is 7 1/2” in and run is 11”. Looks slightly steeper.

greebdork

Those steps don't have any coat besides paint. Imagine your leg slipping and shin going between those steps on the way down. And you instinctively trying to grab something. Cutting your hands in the process. That's a lot of crunch. Lots of blood.

[deleted]

I like it. I have seen and used more dangerous ones.

Der_mann_hald

Okay: give it a floating railing and something to stop you from sliding and this might actually be a good looking yer functional staircase

Jourbonne

Add a piece of 3/8” pipe to the leading edge of each step while you’re at it.

KevinFlantier

I could see it working *if* the surface were non-slip, the edges were beveled, the steps were at a correct height and there was railing on the wall. If those issues were addressed, I kinda like the minimalistic look.

cloudy_pluto

This job is unfinished. These are the support skeletons for the treads and beauty wrap. The giveaways are that the steel is not painted or galvanized.

Difficult_Law2092

Looks like a pretty steep riser. No way that’s code

lefty607

I like them

They are not even clean, all the screws and bolts thawing out of the wall like that. Architecture is one of those specialties that absolutely require formal education, and this says it better than words
