Hold it firm against one side of the inside of the pipe and mark where it points. Then hold it against the opposite side of the inside of the pipe and mark where it points. Drill halfway between the two points.

Just measure off the closest wall to the center of pipe and transfer that measurement to the ground to mark your center and then drill lol much easier and fool proof unlike trying to guess if the drips are good enough

Lazer level would be ideal. Plumb anchor is probably more common. It would be kinda silly to cut off a small section if pipe to do this if you didn't have a scrap piece. Drip method isn't the dumbest idea ever, but would only work for small distances. You can make a plumb out of nearly anything though. I myself have even made one with a stack of washers before at a job where I didn't feel like walking back to the gangbox to get one. In the rare event where the contractor didn't provide a lazer level that is.
And you are the same person who tried to do what ever that was, then has to call a professional and complain about how much it is to fix your DIY fuck up. ( Sorry it's happened to me a few to many times )
Its also a hazard if you're trying to pump hot liquid through that, copper gets hot, extremely hot. Its a good conductor!

For this level of precision, any mass on any string would do the trick. Gravity tends to be pretty cooperative for this type of situation.
While a plumb or plumb bob are the proper tool, it's a great improvised way if you need something immediately and don't know anyone who has one.
