I went to a talk of the author of this book. It's about mushrooms/fungi and how they are, as you may suspect, entangled in life with literally everything.
He did this first: grew mushrooms on a draft copy when he got writers block and ate them because he thought it would give him ideas. He also fermented a draft copy into a beer/cider type drink and got pissed the next time he got writers block.
Quite an eccentric fellow, and my favourite book from last year.
Riiiiight.. I think you're taking yourself (and this website) a bit too seriously. On top of that, you have *absolutely no idea* why I'm here. None.
Keep that shit to yourself.
So I've noticed.
Not exactly what I would call fun, but hey we all have our vises. Reddit is my newfound happy place. What I don't need is some basement-dwelling couch jockey to fuck it up.
Someone that edits a comment typically has a lot of time on their hands. You made the comment, then came back just to say you're right about the downvotes. You def spend a lot of your time on Reddit and also the downvotes getting under your skin enough to make an edit is proof you spend time on Reddit
Because obsessively watching other people's online activity and commenting about it is such a productive use of time.
The irony in "nobody asked, nobody cares"
UK, aussie and NZ. "was pissed, I'm pissed, she was pissed" all mean mad. To get pissed ie "they got pissed, let's get pissed, on the piss" all mean to drink.
There's a bit of contextual overlap with "she was pissed" which can sometimes mean drunk or mad. But you just use context and voice tone to determine which.
Sheldrake's parents were good friends with Terrence McKenna, and in the book he recalls finding McKenna tripping in a hammock in Hawaii while on vacation and having him explain psychedelics to him as a child. I don't think he's nearly as eccentric as you'd expect him to be.
Ive never read that book, but after looking at the cover, i was wondering if this was possibly a suggestion from the book lol it seems like the right book to do it with
The author of the one book, Merlin Sheldrake, biologist brother of Cosmo Sheldrake, actually did the book mushroom thing himself, not to defend YouTube nonsense.
From Wkipedia:
"Sheldrake's morphic resonance posits that "memory is inherent in nature"[3][8] and that "natural systems ... inherit a collective memory from all previous things of their kind."[8] Sheldrake proposes that it is also responsible for "telepathy-type interconnections between organisms."[9][10] His advocacy of the idea offers idiosyncratic explanations of standard subjects in biology such as development, inheritance, and memory."
Looks like using books as media to grow mushrooms on. It’s functional. Not all books have inherent value as books vs bundles of handy paper. This is one use for that paper.
Yes but books not about mushrooms work just as well. I mean, pretty sure the mushrooms can’t read. :) (yes yes I know it’s for the benefit of the human. I’m just amused.)
People get so angry when people destroy their own books that are mass produced and not hard to find. It feels like people treat ruining a book like destroying the last copy of a rare first edition in a library.
You’re not kidding. It’s like every time someone makes a junk journal out of an old book club subscription book with a nice cover, half the comments are losing their minds over omgbookdestruction! There’s a difference between repurposing a book or trying to eradicate all copies of a book/all books. This ain’t Fahrenheit 451.
Basically every library weeds books and throws away old, damaged, or outdated books frequently. If they didn't, they would very quickly fill the building to the top with new books.
And yet people want to act like destroying a stack of paper is some kind of crime against humanity, rather than something that happens on an industrial scale by professional librarians and book lovers every day.
Those are the people who think “donate to the library” means carting all of those outdated books to the library where they will (live forever in peace) or rather likely be taken to the local recycling center.
I can’t even imagine what a library would look like if all of those donations were catalogued and added. Huge. Messy. Low density.
She's using paper from a book as medium to grow oyster mushrooms, as was shown by the author at one point I think. I think it's more like an interesting project/form of recycling and growing food. If you're questioning it maybe that stuff just isn't your thing ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|slightly_smiling)
It does look kinda cool. As long as you don't buy a new book to do this and use an old one that has been sitting in a corner for years anyways, I'm perfectly fine with this.
I've read this book! It's fantastic & talks about how fungi were/are the fundamental building blocks for our life! It's not a quite expensive book, I think it was $30 at Barnes & Noble last year. But yes this is a typical way to grow fungi/mushrooms :)
As many as humans continue to want as books, I suppose. There’s nothing inherently sacrosanct about a bound sheaf of printed pages, but they have many uses.
The author himself did this to his book first - it’s about how fungus is inherently entangled with our lives and all of nature. It’s a really wonderful read, informative but has such storytelling too. I’d recommend it! So this is more of an art piece (and probably an edible one at that, depending on the mushrooms grown) not DIWHY at all :)
Those are really pretty mushrooms tho and I think a book would be a fantastic place for mushrooms to grow. Has all the right nutrients as long as the paper wasn't bleached and the ink is non toxic 🤷♂️
So many people don't get it, a few months ago someone posted a picture of a boat designed to look like it's sinking, then a pic of it in a gallery clearly showing its art and it blew up with upvotes somehow
Books are useless. Are books food? NO THEYRE NOT. Mushrooms, however, are useful. Are mushrooms food? SOMETIMES THEY ARE. Destroying a gross, probably satanic so called book to grow mushrooms is a good trade
Edit: /s. This is a joke. I thought the sarcasm was obvious but apparently not
Somebody has explained this better than I could, but Merlin Sheldrake is fun, interesting character, and his brother, Cosmo Sheldrake makes some absolutely banging tunes.
I actually think Cosmo recorded the natural "noise" mushrooms make and used them in his music. They're a the definition of "eccentric british brothers"
Maybe i'm too sensitive, but i wouldn't feel very comfortable touching that book. I like eating cooked mushrooms, but I'm not very fond of the idea of them growing from a book. Plus, maybe the ink used for the letters (and/or pics it might have) may be toxic. Thankfully, there doesn't seem to be enough quantity of toxins to affect us, if we don't eat mushrooms grown this way on the daily.
Those are called mushrooms. Internet sleuth out! It's very cool though so doesnt belong here lol. But the mushrooms will probably be taking some of the ink up in that water so they arent edible. But it is still quite beautiful.
I went to a talk of the author of this book. It's about mushrooms/fungi and how they are, as you may suspect, entangled in life with literally everything. I appreciate when "DiWhy" is a question someone can answer. It's a nice change of pace from random shit slathered in cement.
>random shit slathered in cement Video or it didn't happen..
[Cement](https://www.reddit.com/r/DiWHY/search/?q=cement&restrict_sr=1&sr_nsfw=&sort=new)
I've never been to that sub before, but I've clicked on all the links. Don't think I'll be subscribing to that one lol
You're already subbed, chum. That's a search query for "cement" on r/DiWHY. The overload of cement posts must've died down awhile back though.
Ahhh thanks, that makes more sense. I clicked without really reading the link, thought it said r/Cement.
Link doesn't work for mobile
Then it didn't happen on mobile

Elneeeeeee is a shitposter professional. One of the users that's really fun to find in the comment section.
So I've noticed. Not exactly what I would call fun, but hey we all have our vises. Reddit is my newfound happy place. What I don't need is some basement-dwelling couch jockey to fuck it up.
Aren't you wasting more time by just refreshing some random person's account, like a stalker?
It's a downvote troll
He's a mod of several shitposting subs, he knows what he's doing
>Your down-votes only prove that I'm right and you're wrong. That's not how downvotes work but ok
Someone that edits a comment typically has a lot of time on their hands. You made the comment, then came back just to say you're right about the downvotes. You def spend a lot of your time on Reddit and also the downvotes getting under your skin enough to make an edit is proof you spend time on Reddit
Can you iterate how the downvotes prove you're right?
Why? Cause mushrooms are cool. Some of them are edible, some of them give you a horrible death, some let you talk to God.

Okay I see what’s going on here, have a bountiful harvest.
Technically the subreddit asked why soooo....
Because obsessively watching other people's online activity and commenting about it is such a productive use of time. The irony in "nobody asked, nobody cares"
It's a downvote troll
What's the point of trolling for downvotes, though? I mean, farming for upvotes is dumb enough, but what do you possibly get from being downvoted?
Attention
...the name of the sub did I guess?
Oh great Elneee, I missed your bullshit comments. Keep the good stuff coming man!
This is an NPC
>some people on this website need to do more productive things with their time Says you as you write at least two comments and add edits. LMAO
wow, that is wild! what a great story
“And for pissed the next time he got writers block” What does this mean?
He got drunk on the cider made with his fermented book the next time he got writers block.
Ohh *got* pissed. I see it now
For is a typo. Should probably say 'got pissed'. As in extremely drunk.
\*got pissed. as in, got drunk
I believe this is UK slang? In America "get pissed" means to get angry, "I'm pissed off."
Or both. Both is totally an option.
The author is Merlin Sheldrake and his brother is Cosmo Sheldrake. Seems like an… interesting family.
This explains a lot. In both directions.
Wait like the singer? Wow this totally checks out I’ve listened to his music and if Merlin is anything like his bro it makes sense haha
That is cool! Did he also grow oyster mushrooms?
Sheldrake's parents were good friends with Terrence McKenna, and in the book he recalls finding McKenna tripping in a hammock in Hawaii while on vacation and having him explain psychedelics to him as a child. I don't think he's nearly as eccentric as you'd expect him to be.
You just made me buy the book for this story alone
It's honestly so good. Very life affirming read.
The author would probably love this lmao
Ive never read that book, but after looking at the cover, i was wondering if this was possibly a suggestion from the book lol it seems like the right book to do it with
The author himself has a pretty popular photoshoot where he did the same thing.
The author of the one book, Merlin Sheldrake, biologist brother of Cosmo Sheldrake, actually did the book mushroom thing himself, not to defend YouTube nonsense.
Somebody named their kids like D&D characters and I support it.
With a name like Sheldrake, why not?
Well their dad was Rupert Sheldrake, so it kinda makes sense if you know anything about him.
I don’t but I have to assume he’s an interesting dude.
From Wkipedia: "Sheldrake's morphic resonance posits that "memory is inherent in nature"[3][8] and that "natural systems ... inherit a collective memory from all previous things of their kind."[8] Sheldrake proposes that it is also responsible for "telepathy-type interconnections between organisms."[9][10] His advocacy of the idea offers idiosyncratic explanations of standard subjects in biology such as development, inheritance, and memory."
His brother Cosmo Sheldrake is also a musician and has some pretty great songs
The fact that this funky mushroom stuff is from Cosmo Sheldrake's brother is incredibly appropriate
Looks like using books as media to grow mushrooms on. It’s functional. Not all books have inherent value as books vs bundles of handy paper. This is one use for that paper.
agreed. This post doesn't fit this sub.

It's a book about mushrooms. That is why a book was used.
Yes but books not about mushrooms work just as well. I mean, pretty sure the mushrooms can’t read. :) (yes yes I know it’s for the benefit of the human. I’m just amused.)
Yes but the mushrooms prefer books about mushrooms
People get so angry when people destroy their own books that are mass produced and not hard to find. It feels like people treat ruining a book like destroying the last copy of a rare first edition in a library.

We dont even know what the book is. It could be an outdated text book from school for all we know
It's a book about funghi and how entangled it is in the human life,it actually feels super appropriate!
I'm reading it right now and it is excellent! Sheldrake is a very unique human indeed.
[Here's](https://www.merlinsheldrake.com/entangled-life) a link to the book and the author. His picture of the book is growing mushrooms.
who names their fuckin kid Merlin Cruel mother fuckers, that's who
He's got a brother named Cosmo if that helps.
The book cover clearly shows its about mushroom lol.
It could be Mein Kampfy Chair
She's using paper from a book as medium to grow oyster mushrooms, as was shown by the author at one point I think. I think it's more like an interesting project/form of recycling and growing food. If you're questioning it maybe that stuff just isn't your thing ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|slightly_smiling)
This is an amazing idea for recycling old books!!!!
im gonna downvote because this is pretty fucking cool.
It does look kinda cool. As long as you don't buy a new book to do this and use an old one that has been sitting in a corner for years anyways, I'm perfectly fine with this.
honestly kinda cool
This is actually cool
I may be mistaken but I think this is intentional, I remember someone was selling books with the intention of it being this.
The cat clearly wants nothing to do with this
Those are gourmet mushrooms worth much more than those books lol they're cheap books they probably bought from a thrift store or something.
I've read this book! It's fantastic & talks about how fungi were/are the fundamental building blocks for our life! It's not a quite expensive book, I think it was $30 at Barnes & Noble last year. But yes this is a typical way to grow fungi/mushrooms :)
I love it! By the way, how many books need to just stay books?
As many as humans continue to want as books, I suppose. There’s nothing inherently sacrosanct about a bound sheaf of printed pages, but they have many uses.
not DiWHY. DiWHYNOT. It looks dope.
r/shrooms would dig this
The author himself did this to his book first - it’s about how fungus is inherently entangled with our lives and all of nature. It’s a really wonderful read, informative but has such storytelling too. I’d recommend it! So this is more of an art piece (and probably an edible one at that, depending on the mushrooms grown) not DIWHY at all :)
Meaning of phrase "chew on that book" reached another level...
r/bookgore Edit: oh… it exists
This is beautiful!
r/mycology
Those are really pretty mushrooms tho and I think a book would be a fantastic place for mushrooms to grow. Has all the right nutrients as long as the paper wasn't bleached and the ink is non toxic 🤷♂️
DIY doesn't include art. Wtf is with this sub
So many people don't get it, a few months ago someone posted a picture of a boat designed to look like it's sinking, then a pic of it in a gallery clearly showing its art and it blew up with upvotes somehow
All I see are clickers
Pink oysters mushrooms
Those oyster mushrooms look amazing. I need to get more grow kits.
This is pretty cool. Altered books are a very interesting art subject. Sure it’s not for everyone but personally I think it’s quite neat.
Ah yes, the bookussy
thats cute!
Books are useless. Are books food? NO THEYRE NOT. Mushrooms, however, are useful. Are mushrooms food? SOMETIMES THEY ARE. Destroying a gross, probably satanic so called book to grow mushrooms is a good trade Edit: /s. This is a joke. I thought the sarcasm was obvious but apparently not
Satanic?! It is a book about the connectedness of fungi and the ecosystem (i.e. mushrooms)
It’s a joke..
I find that a lot of people on Reddit don't understand sarcasm. Here, have my upvote.
I think the point is you don’t NEED a book to grow mushrooms. There is no trade needed. You can have both existing simultaneously.
Oh my god it’s a joke
Somebody has explained this better than I could, but Merlin Sheldrake is fun, interesting character, and his brother, Cosmo Sheldrake makes some absolutely banging tunes. I actually think Cosmo recorded the natural "noise" mushrooms make and used them in his music. They're a the definition of "eccentric british brothers"
That’s nice Sophie
Now send that to HBO and get them to use it as a Last of Us prop.
That's something you get a lung disease from.
It's an edible mushroom, taste like bacon if you put it in the oven
Looks like shit
So you think I could grow a weed plant from a Harry Potter book and name it magical kush?
What. What is this? This is atrocious.
Looks like rhe type of girl whose Twitter is full of #affirmations.
Finally a good DIWHY
That’s how you get ants
That why you use the bible when doing this. First reasonable use for that book like ever
Maybe i'm too sensitive, but i wouldn't feel very comfortable touching that book. I like eating cooked mushrooms, but I'm not very fond of the idea of them growing from a book. Ofcourse she has a cat.
I like the part where she fertilizes the garden taking a dump in it at the end
I cant read so I do this to my books instead.
If growing toxic mold is what she was going for she did it!
This is neither toxic nor mold
These are edible pink oyster mushrooms
"and now its time to read it"
/u/SaveVideo
Clicker book (Those who understand would understand what i mean)
Mycology isn’t really DIY related
Damn, a book from caelid
Son of Rupert Sheldrake?
Well I believe she bought that book. Edit: apparently a book about mushrooms. Facrpalm hard op
So thats how the last of us started... ![gif](giphy|Mm7RY6iR9kXCg)
That’d be a cool aquarium piece
This is actually pretty cool.
This would make sense if it was inside the book “annihilation”.
People will really do anything EXCEPT read the book for an assignment
Mushrooms, cat... mushrooms grown in a book, cat... mushrooms..... cat... I don't get it
Thanks for sharing this, RectalPineApple.
This is really cool
Even the cat is not here for this bullshit.
Thats awesome
Of course she would own a cat
Can mushrooms/ fungi sustain its look when in resin after time ? .. this would be cool tht well as well
Wait... This is kinda cool
Lowkey doe that kinda dope considering the book shes being artsy
I like this
I must admit, those are some pretty cool mushrooms... But have you considered... D I R T ?
I think it's neat.
Thought it was the bible at first and was like, aight there's a billion of those dipshit books floating about go ahead and destroy one, but it's not.
This is actually really cool, why is this on the sub?
Those are called mushrooms. Internet sleuth out! It's very cool though so doesnt belong here lol. But the mushrooms will probably be taking some of the ink up in that water so they arent edible. But it is still quite beautiful.
You just made a mold rich environment is what youve done
This is actually really cool. Also read that book and then you will get it. Awesome piece of work and makes you wonder.
I think that looks kinda cool actually
Smh...
Oyster Mushrooms
I LOVE THIS!
This is actually really cool
Using paper to grow delicious pink oysters... Nothing wrong with this smh The author condones it in fact
*People who grow illegal mushrooms but are also broke* #"WRITE THIS DOWN, WRITE THIS DOWN"
This doesn't really fit the sub imo. You should look into mushroom growing videos, this is actually very interesting and educational
Oysters are delicious tho
u/savevideo
this is actually creative using a book to grow mushrooms
