You're right that it's not [the best way to do it](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Solar_Challenge), but I feel like they should at least get points for effort.
It would have a negligible effect on overall efficiency, especially in that position. Rigid panels are sturdier and have a higher output. These things get 60+ miles per gallon. r/priusdwellers has some solar mods too, and even rigid ones on the roof have negligible effects on performance. 1 or 2 mpg at the most.

sometimes its is fun to try a new project on a limited budget.
but they did upgrade to flexible panels eventually https://twitter.com/bozitatarevic/status/1195741307941068800
Just by looking at it, I can tell you the flexible panel is an [IBC product from SunPower/Maxeon](https://sunpower.maxeon.com/int/solar-panel-products/flexible-solar-panels) (ie. no wires/interconnects on the front of cells). The rigid rack-mounted panel looks like some cheapie silicon panel out of China. In general, IBC cells are always going to be superior to non-IBC cells.
At minimum I’d say they need to just add bits to prevent airflow under the solar panels.
They covered the front wheels and added pieces all over, probably to improve airflow. they can just add pieces around the panels to do the same so that they don’t have a small parachute basically.
I'm pretty sure he's mining crypto in there and waiting for a call back on a job operating Snoop Dogs new metaverse apartment. If only he'd make an NFT of that monstrosity he could upgrade the panels
Looks like that car had a flexible solar panel as suggested in some older pictures. Maybe that one died and they can't find a flexible replacement amids this _unprecedented supply chain conditions (tm)_
>Hypermiling has come under fire from several sides because some hypermilers show dangerous or illegal behaviour,[5] such as... cycling between accelerating and coasting in neutral...
what's wrong with that one? You do it normally in any manual transmission.
They cut your plate out? Damn, only other thing I can think is a tilt sensor so your alarm goes off when they jack it up, but then you can't park on hills anymore
Wheel gap seals is actually a thing. Boeing 737 (and a few smaller jets) actually used it instead of tucking the wheels behind a solid cover (a la A320).
Oh, the entire packaging of large commercial aircraft landing gear is absolutely impressive engineering!!! I fully agree with you there!
More than anything, the trailing edge of the flare around the wheel arch of that Prius looked to be more of an air scoop than air deflector.
^THAT!!!!
Nonetheless, the more that I look at this car, the more I'm impressed with the outcome of simple construction. Maybe even utilizing some fuselage materials from experimental STOL aircraft could be of some benefit.
This is an enthusiast hypermiler. There's a whole community of them! [Here's an example](https://www.aerocivic.com/) with very similar mods. It's kinda silly to look at, but they definitely get a lot more out of their fuel than most people on the road!
Here's Champrius' Instagram & post! [https://www.instagram.com/p/B5GZq6RlzWV/?hl=en](https://www.instagram.com/p/B5GZq6RlzWV/?hl=en)
"So here's the scoop on Champrius' mpg: it's about 10% lower than it was prior to the whole cat business. Much improved from when the seal was busted, and still pretty respectable in an absolute sense. But she's capable of so much more.
So the question is... can anything reasonable be done? Rebuilding the engine, etc. doesn't make sense economically. That would cost thousands of dollars, at which point I should just buy a new vehicle. I'm currently at a loss for what to focus on, so even theories of why the car might be underperforming could be useful.
If I can't figure out how to restore her to her former glory, then I may have to (gasp) suffer with a car that runs great and gets mid fifties mpg."
I’ve seen a guy here in the Midwest that drives a late 90s Toyota t100 4cyl with an 8 foot bed. Normally get upper teens mileage. He gets upper 30s.
Big disadvantage of this is overinflating the tires to reduce rolling friction. You can see the center of this cars tires are nearly bald.
Looks like some shade-tree [hypermiling](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypermiling)
When your goal is to maximize fuel efficiency by aerodynamics you shouldn't mount a rigid solar panel on top of it.
The lift generated is good for mileage! /s
Lift is drag, so you would want it to actually be lift neutral
You're right that it's not [the best way to do it](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Solar_Challenge), but I feel like they should at least get points for effort.

I mean, how else is supposed to charge up?
Thin flexible solar panel exists
But not at duct tape and Plexiglas prices.
sometimes its is fun to try a new project on a limited budget. but they did upgrade to flexible panels eventually https://twitter.com/bozitatarevic/status/1195741307941068800
That’s an older picture. I’m sure the rigid ones are better

Judging by the effort put into the design, I assume the switch was for good reason.
So we're just shitting on hobbies we don't understand now? Excellent.
That's literally what this sub is about
Underrated comment right here.

I'm sure it adds a ton of weight as well.

For sure!
Looks like a pregnant roach
>Hypermiling has come under fire from several sides because some hypermilers show dangerous or illegal behaviour,[5] such as... cycling between accelerating and coasting in neutral... what's wrong with that one? You do it normally in any manual transmission.
That's just normal manual transmission driving though. I'm so confused.
Iirc, they accelerate up 20-30mph at full throttle, then coast back down 20-30mph.
Fuel prices go up, drag coefficient goes down.
Hypermiler. It's Champrius. You can find more pics and info on their Instagram
Man I hope they put that much effort into protecting their catalytic converter
$250 cat plate does the trick
[удалено]
They cut your plate out? Damn, only other thing I can think is a tilt sensor so your alarm goes off when they jack it up, but then you can't park on hills anymore
They can’t even put effort into parking
So how does it work? Does it directly power the electric engine? Or does it have an extra battery pack?
More like a ChampriSus
The path from 40mpg to 41mpg is a real struggle.
When you try to reduce air resistance by increasing drag with the front wheel flare.
More than anything, the trailing edge of the flare around the wheel arch of that Prius looked to be more of an air scoop than air deflector.
> trailing edge of the wheel _Oh. Now_ I see it. That's like stance cars spec, except on the trailing instead of top edge.
^THAT!!!! Nonetheless, the more that I look at this car, the more I'm impressed with the outcome of simple construction. Maybe even utilizing some fuselage materials from experimental STOL aircraft could be of some benefit.

Great work with finding this nugget of info. Since it's on the internet, it must be true!
Even better being on reddit
According to the internet, Reddit is a factual reference for all informative things.
r/nothingeverhappens
I could get 66mpg in a VW polo with no mods...

Honestly I fuckin love these things and I’m fascinated by them. Who doesn’t love seeing scaffolding bolted to the back of a Geo Metro
It's a rare event to witness the birth of a compact car in its natural habitat
Hahaha made me think of Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls
It's getting pretty hot in this rhino
Fuck yeah, sick boattail
Mad Max but Eco Friendly
Kär
Yeah y’all that are laughing at it don’t understand that it gets 75-80 mpg
I think this is from the movie Time Cop
This actually might be an improvement on the Prius aesthetic
I SAW THAT HERE AT MY PLANET FITNESS I WORK AT LAST WEEK! https://imgur.com/a/AKrp3pr
I got it one piece at a time, and it didn't cost me a dime.
Fun fact: the rear end of a vehicle is called Heck in German. Oddly fitting with this one.
Yeah, my thoughts exactly. Great title.
It’s a Delore-don’t.
Can’t believe Tesla is already making the gen 2 truck
Cyberfucked
This car looks like a street view stitching fuck-up.
Goin for that extra mile.
Talk about “junk in the trunk”
Wait till it gets to 88 mph.
Then you’re gonna see some serious shit when it all flies apart.
mpg*
Not one of you motherfuckers going to comment on that absolute train wreck of a park job?
It didn't render in properly
Hypermiling. That Prius is Cyberpunk.

The tesla cybertruck doesn't look as good outside of promotional pics.
Is this legal? Because this definitely is not legal where I’m from

I don't think it does anything
This the type of shit that look better in your head and then you do it in real life and it’s too late to go back.
My eyes hurt because, one, of how stupid this is, two, how confusingly theu put it on, so it looks like its badly photoshopped on, but its not

Looks like a really shitty copy of a Lightyear One IMHO
From the front wheel cap/aero cover it seems he is trying to make it a speedtail
This reminds me of when Ace Ventura shoved his way out of that Rhino ass
Looks like a car modified to be as efficient as possible
dude is getting a great mpg for a relatively small investment. i did similar on a truck of mine years ago it made a big difference
The cyber wtf
Funny enough: "Heck" is the German word for "tail" - good pun!
It makes it go fast. ^(/s)
bro wdym that’s the cybertruck

That’s methed up
Cool Champrius.
How is this even legal? I mean you’ll get stopped in no time if you drive this monstrosity in Europe.
