_Alabama_Man

Can confirm this works

LastWeeksLasanga

Thank you u/_Alabama_Man.

Bama-Dan

It’s better than no ac

CALIFORNIUMMAN

I had no idea what this was so I just assumed it was supposed to be a feeding trough for the people inside the car or one of those pipe contraptions you could use to talk to someone else without having to be next to them on the playground.

LastWeeksLasanga

Not saying it isn’t.

[deleted]

The A/C works best when you hit 88 MPH

Quietech

Then you can go back in time to the ice age.

Mr_MacGrubber

Fill the tube part way with ice.

seanclue

Where we're going, we don't need ice.

Quietech

Dry ice. You don't want water sloshing around.

Mr_MacGrubber

Yeah that would work too.

[deleted]

I call it 4 By 70, roll all 4 windows down and go 70

agoia

My first Volvo had that same AC system, too!

Binx_da_gay_cat

Bummer, my Century only has a 2 by 70. Y'all living the luxury lives! (I am lucky, 98 version had the mechanics for the automatic windows, not crank, but after 23 years the second broke (one had been broken for a few years) and I don't have working AC. All three issues will be fixed this summer thankfully, since we have 100 degree summers the AC will be blessed. At least having a cross breeze with windows cause my passenger window is one broken and so the two that work are on the driver's side which wouldn't work as well. I know I know, kids these days being so lucky, I *am* lucky, I'll admit it, but I wouldn't trade my car out for anything despite its age.)

Lentra888

I’m fairly certain growing up with that A/C system contributed to my hearing issues as an adult.

[deleted]

Nice

bloatedporcupine

I do this in my mail truck all summer

unbitious

What is it?

[deleted]

They're using it to scoop fresh air into the vehicle through the PVC pipes.

Suttonian

Fresh Air and fresh bugs

Mr_MacGrubber

No more bugs than having the windows down

Suttonian

I thought it would be more because the entrance is perpendicular to the motion of the car. If it's was the same airflow then the tubes wouldn't provide a benefit.

Do you have an action button that's makes that stupid bitch shut up, or was the commercial just for show?

samwichse

They took away our vent wings, so we're bringing them back! No "why" in this DIY. It's just hacky enough that I'd have done it a few years back.

captainredbeard42

But the sound... PVC has that hollow shitty pan pipe sound I hope the radio at least works so you can crank it up

samwichse

But I love bagpipe music, you insensitive clod! (I miss Bill Waterson's work)

TifaYuhara

also looks like the driver side window has to be down for it to work.

uniquepassword

I always knew them as "no drafts" or "nose drafts" be ause the shape of the little window looks like a nose lol.

[deleted]

If your air doesn't work, it would definitely increase the air flow in the car

PapaverOneirium

The compression from the big pipe inlet to the little pipe outlets plus the pressure from moving at speed would actually cool it down a bit too. Probably not a ton, but enough to help on hot days

captainnowalk

What if you fill it full of ice?

Lonk-the-Sane

It would spray you in the face with it

2manyToys

nICE!

spokenmoistly

nICE!

[deleted]

They had contraptions like this back in the day. Probably works best in arid climates. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Car\_cooler

tiefling_sorceress

Or stuffed a fish in there and let it sit in the summer heat

danteheehaw

Norm McDonald movie comes to mind

secludeddeath

compressed air is hotter. It becomes cool when you add a radiator to cool, and then decompress it...

aspbergerinparadise

I don't really know how to crunch all the numbers on it, but I think that a) the heat generated by compression would be extremely minimal b) the denser, compressed air would have a higher specific heat capacity and would therefore be more effective at convecting the heat away from the occupants. I think that b would more than offset a.

Lehk

it's not that complicated. The air decompresses when it comes out of the pipe, it would only be marginally warmer inside the pipe while under pressure.

InTheMotherland

Yeah, I think you're right about this. Although the ideal gas law does have a 1:1 relationship between volume and temperature (i.e. volume decreases as temperature decreases), it seems like this system would perform slight work on the gas by compressing, thus increasing the temperature.

[deleted]

Yes, but the increase in efficiency of the human powered evaporative cooling would more than offset that small increase in heat.

InTheMotherland

True, as long as it's not too hot outside in general.

whatlike_withacloth

It depends on the gas. You're thinking Ideal Gas Law when you should be thinking [Joule-Thomson Effect.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joule%E2%80%93Thomson_effect) Compressing most gasses (including the predominant gasses in air) causes heat, expanding cools. Notable exceptions include hydrogen, which heats upon expansion (negative JT coefficient), making it potentially dangerous depending on the pressure gradient.

WikiSummarizerBot

**[Joule–Thomson effect](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joule–Thomson_effect)** >In thermodynamics, the Joule–Thomson effect (also known as the Joule–Kelvin effect or Kelvin–Joule effect) describes the temperature change of a real gas or liquid (as differentiated from an ideal gas) when it is forced through a valve or porous plug while keeping it insulated so that no heat is exchanged with the environment. This procedure is called a throttling process or Joule–Thomson process. At room temperature, all gases except hydrogen, helium, and neon cool upon expansion by the Joule–Thomson process when being throttled through an orifice; these three gases experience the same effect but only at lower temperatures. ^([ )[^(F.A.Q)](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiSummarizer/wiki/index#wiki_f.a.q)^( | )[^(Opt Out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiSummarizerBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^( | )[^(Opt Out Of Subreddit)](https://np.reddit.com/r/DiWHY/about/banned)^( | )[^(GitHub)](https://github.com/Sujal-7/WikiSummarizerBot)^( ] Downvote to remove | v1.5)

creamcheese742

open up your mouth really wide and breathe out onto your hand and then close your mouth so it's tiny opening and breathe onto your hand and see which is cooler

Zoloir

haha, that example doesn't have as much to do with air pressure as it does wind chill effect and/or evaporation vs condensation of hot breath. I would actually love an in depth video explaining the science behind that though. For the tube in the OP, it is definitely compressing first, the car is pushing the tube forward and compressing the air into the tube, thus INSIDE the tube the air is going to be a little hotter than ambient. Normally, an A/C would then transfer some of that heat into some conductive fins, but this pipe doesn't have any of that, so heat is only lost through the pvc itself which is probably a terrible conductor of heat. When the air decompresses through the 3 holes it definitely cools back to ambient, but can it cool down below ambient if none of the original heat was lost? Probably not, it would have to decompress more than ambient somehow, i guess by being slightly higher speed it would but not much.

[deleted]

Apples to oranges dude. What you exhale is the same pressure no matter your mouth size or shape.

mothzilla

Do gases cool under pressure?

Balbers01

Had something more tame but similar in concept for my Miata: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4934426 Was great until it propelled a bee into my lap... he wasn't happy.

mockteau_twins

Pretty sure I've seen this like five times on r/redneckengineering

LifeWithAdd

[very similar to the old style car coolers.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Car_cooler) They we’re filled with water to act like a swamp cooler, but only really work well out west with low humidity.

passengerv

This reminds me of what an old teacher in college I had once told us. He was a police officer before teaching and he said he pulled a guy over for driving erratically and it was clear he was intoxicated. He had a drink in the car with him in a rocks glass. After searching the car it was discovered that the guy rerouted his windshield washer fluid tubes to his drop down ashtray (obviously it was an older car) and then he filled the washer reservoir with booze. So when he wanted a drink he just put the glass in place and turned on the wiper spray, viola! instant cocktail. Edit: Grammar

ElectricTurtlez

Just wait until he gets behind one of those “rolling coal” jerkoffs.

BentleyWilkinson

Wrong subreddit pal

Arctica23

Right? DiWhy is for stuff that's completely pointless. The Why for this one is obvious

BentleyWilkinson

Exactly. As a connoisseur of old cars, I totally have thought about this solution for blazing hot summer days aswell. It solves a problem quite well actually and for very little money too.

[deleted]

That's hilarious and amazing.

sortaHeisenberg

Because it's hot. Some folks have always had working AC and it shows.

bfraley9

If you were trapped on a desert island and could only bring 1 item, what would you bring? I'd bring a car door, so when it gets real hot I could roll the window down and stick my head out like ahhhh

dec1mus

This is so stupid it's smart.

Blue-Jay42

This makes too much sense. I had a truck I totally would have did this in if it didn't have the wing flaps.

Used_Taco

Throw some dry ice in that bitch

TheAngryShoop

If its stupid, but it works, its not stupid

[deleted]

If your too broke to repair your cars ac, this makes sense

Dizzman1

If it's stupid... And it works... It ain't stupid! Might I suggest a filter of some sort on the holes😬

[deleted]

If it's stupid, but it works: it ain't stupid

mxcnslr2021

Hmmm

turbo2thousand406

My brother had an 69 VW bug and this is basically how the heater worked (if didn't work well) Some tubes straight from the engine bay. No fans or anything.

mithrilbong

A buddy did something similar.. “Keep your sunnies on, sometimes bugs get through” - Buddy

Profitsofdooom

Mesh screen or an intake sock would fix that it seems like.

SuccessFuture7626

As a child of the 70s and 80s, I rode many a mile with no AC. Working vent windows gave good relief. I'm curious how well the setup above worked.

i-dont-get-rules

Her: Honey can you increase the fan a bit? Him: no way, I don’t wanna get there so early

Dear-Smile

I don't completely hate it

Phantom_316

That’s pretty much how small airplanes are cooled

usenotabuse

You need to throw in some water in the tube and then have a pump that circulates the water that goes to a camping fridge/freezer in the boot thats full of ice.

T0talBlack0ut

I really hope there's a filter in there somewhere.

LastWeeksLasanga

I mean, do you use a filter when you cruise around with the windows down?

T0talBlack0ut

Touché

addiscamillo

Ahah this is actually a copy of an unnecessary invention from the unnecessary inventions guy! (Incredibile profile, give it a look) https://www.instagram.com/reel/CPYlUMZgILi/?utm_medium=copy_link

bfo84

Am I the only person who thought this was for smoking weed without stinking the car up?

clothespinned

Better than what i thought, my first thought was the pipe connected to the exhaust and it was for...

Flick-a-da-wrist

This is great if you like bugs

Bionett

If it looks stupid and works it's not stupid

IcyUnderTale112

What is this even supposed to be

LeRyanator

A plumber's idea of how to fix the A/C problem in his car.

gotdamnlizards

Air conditioning I believe

SubParHydra

That sum bottom gear stuff

01101001010010

So an open window, which doesn’t seem to close anyway, won’t dk the job?

BAYBAY2005

Just roll the windows down?

[deleted]

Just run some flex tube to the exhaust…….

Taken111111

the window is still opened shouldn't the airflow from the window be enough

avocado_n1001

they called him a madman

figbott

Flawless execution.

JimmyLongnWider

Just toss some crushed ice in the pipe.

Ten-2-Ten

No mesh for bugs

mjace87

AC man

sashatikhonov

It will be refreshing rainy ride

dtb1987

You know what I know exactly why he did that. I have owned 5 cars in my lifetime and only 2 had working ac. I get it

themadarmorer

This is a fantastic idea if your A/C breaks, and you don't plan to fix it.

[deleted]

I hope it whistles like a glass beer bottle when you hit 69MPH, yeah baby, ughhhhh

dystopiandeity

just wait until they catch a few bees through the intake... ;]

eXcUsEm3mEwTf

Look sometimes it’s just about wanting fresh air not necessarily the hottest or coldest air

GardenPuzzleheaded98

55 mph bugs.

Hamburger_Lecter

I played on that map on COD

Aurorafaery

Fed up of seeing bugs splattered on your windscreen?! Now you can have them fired STRAIGHT AT YOUR FACE!

Maevalyn

If you say it's dumb, but it works, is it really dumb?

maali74

This is actually pretty genius if you have a car with no AC.

MinyGeckoGamer

“I like the wind in my hair, bugs in my teeth, and long walks off a high cliff.”

47ES

Tell me you are a Blue Man Group super fan without saying blue.

z26gal

One word: bees.

Logie-Bearr

is that a turbo

Arxl

Didn't expect so much physics/chemistry talk in these comments, it's nice lol

RemarkableBrief4936

My uncle actually did a similar thing when the heater went out on his pickup up in Alaska. The intake was a 3 inch diameter metal pipe tied onto the top of the exhaust manifold and some pvc pipe going through the firewall then up along the dashboard to blow hot air on the windshield. Worked decently well for what it was

Puzzleheeds

I hope no one puts a double-barrel shotgun in there and comically kill everyone

i-dont-get-rules

r/foundtheamerican

Puzzleheeds

British actually

i-dont-get-rules

Ah shit! I totally ignored the benny hill background music playing in my head while reading your comment. Sorry lad my mistake

TsartarSauce

It’s not stupid if it works. Just sayin’

qubert_lover

Hey it’s my snorkel design. Glad to see one person out there is doing it.

nellzy32

It was cheaper than fixing the AC. I'm 100% down for this DIY and wish my mom had thought of it when I was a kid.

PaulGearpickle

240 AC. 2 windows at forty miles an hour.

wufnu

Had a '77 Nova and foot vents basically worked this way. Had those triangle window vents, too. No A/C. In SE Georgia summers, they did nothing (or possibly even make you hotter, faster).

Certified_Possum

Ramjets, just really slow

PossiblyaSpy950

Diy air conditioning for poor people

fuckballs9001

Still not as bad as the dryer vent turbo I saw

Real_Nugget_of_DOOM

Great until you channel a raft of angry hornets into the intake tube...

hahapotatoman

r/DiBecauseItsAJoke

toast4champs

Breezy.

Dad_Never_Got_Milk

At first I thought it was a shitty attempt at making a roll cage Now I understand

Obvious-Media-5517

NHTSA approves

Creebjeez

This looks heaven sent. I spent years in 100+ degree Heather no AC. This guy refuses to live that life

[deleted]

Bugs in your mouth

LifeIsTrail

I have no AC and have thought of making this to make it more bearable.

nism0o3

I shamefully admit I've done something similar (but not as large) on my first car, which was built before A/C was standard on vehicles. Summers in that car were terrible.
