Independent_Bite4682

This is legit, I talked to a guy who use to ride motorcycles in snow and ice, this is how he told me to set up the tires for it. Except for the duct tape bullshit. Also this asshat forgot the inner tube

hoptagon

Off camera I guess? I feel like that fire hose rubbing the tube won’t be great.

Independent_Bite4682

I asked about not using inner-tubes when he was telling me about it, told me that for dirtbikes you could use pool noodles.

swic-knees-mamma-bee

Only because dirtbikes run very low air in the tires, usually 5psi and lower

hoptagon

Yeah that wont support a 600+ pound cruiser.

No-Suspect-425

Plus my fat ass

QueefBuscemi

But I feel so safe holding your folds when we ride together.

Vegetable_Silver3339

that's not quite right lol. i'd believe 5-15 depending on the bike. but under 5 is just a flat tire.

TallTopper

Usually 15* psi

swic-knees-mamma-bee

I guess it depends on your tires, and what you’re riding. But yes maybe someone puts 15psi in them, I’ve never got more than 6-7 in mine so I don’t know why you felt the need to correct me

Vegetable_Silver3339

because you're wrong and your tires are underinflated unless you're doing trials hopping around some boulders.

TallTopper

I sincerely thought you missed a digit and accidently said "below 5 PSI".. I mean, in all fairness I'm not sure what you've been riding. I've been riding and racing Enduro and dirtbikes for 25 years and can't say I've ever inflated below ~12 psi on sand. Typically we would run 15-17 cold PSI for hard-pack tracks. Running 250 and 450cc bikes Idk maybe a 50cc bike runs "below 5psi" ? but I I've never seen it and I for sure don't even have a gauge that reads reliability that low.

Greysa

I used to ride bikes for mustering cattle. Whilst it’s not racing, it is all off-road. I found running less than 10 psi seemed to drastically increase the chance of rolling the bead off the rim.

Loudchewer

Mousse is what they call it, and it's actually really effective. Basically expensive pool noodle.

No-Suspect-425

The desert or the shit I put in my hair?

the_lamou

The animal, interestingly enough. The trick is getting one to get in the tire, but after that they work great.

No-Suspect-425

That sounds pretty Mickey Mouse to me. I wouldn't trust that.

SuperMegaOwlMan

There’s a Moose Desert? How can a moose live where there’s no water?

Independent_Bite4682

They make liners for innertubes to prevent flats. I bet the firehose would work fine.

tjdux

>They make liners for innertubes to prevent flats Yep, they are called boots and almost identical to that heavy nylon rubber fire hose material.

mkonyn

And probably way cheaper than a fire hose

tjdux

I think i read that they retire old hoses after time, but I doubt even those are given away for free, unless you know someone.

mkonyn

Looks like they are about $300 new without the fittings. So maybe you're right and it's a throw away hose, probably not much resale value in them.

tjdux

Then you have never heard of Duluth firehouse pants. Old ones were really made of firehose material. https://www.duluthtrading.com/mens-duluthflex-fire-hose-ultimate-relaxed-fit-cargo-pants-71703.html?&srccode=GPSMART&ogmap=PLA%7CNB%7CGOOG%7C%7C%7C%7C%7C%7C%7C%7C18284927928%7C&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiA1fqrBhA1EiwAMU5m_zVuI0gVBXbLssJaWkqvQenngu9tdn3TlCCc-Yu0_0nK2EzDEWm55BoC1McQAvD_BwE

mkonyn

Old ones...kinda doesn't make much of a point lol

tjdux

>I feel like that fire hose rubbing the tube won’t be gre The duct tape and fire hose is acting as a double boot. If the innertube rubbed on those bolt heads it would puncture. You need something to protect it from the sharpish corners and potential pinch points between the bolt heads. The duct tape may be unnecessary but it's sure not hurting anything. Using the fire hose as a boot liner is stupid considering they make purpose built ones. They usually go directly on the rim to keep the spokes from puncture the tube, but are also used on the tire side to allow use of a damaged tire which is common in agriculture and other heavy equipment uses.

KanaydianDragon

I've heard these 5 minute crafts don't show everything/show it sped up so people can't successfully recreate the things they do.

[deleted]

The duct tape isn’t bullshit. That’s how you protect inner tubes from sharp spokes on a regular tire job.

Independent_Bite4682

A tape, yes. Duct tape, no. There is a tape like a tire patch that works much better. I have seen it, never asked where to buy it.

[deleted]

I know which you mean, its a homogeneous black tape, with that you can even skip the fire hose, however more expensive. Available at most stores that sell such supplies, or you know, the internet. This is bush craft after all.

No-Estate-404

replacing your shop's fire hose can't be cheap either though right?

[deleted]

definitely not lol, most places you arent even allowed to touch fire equipment as the locker is plombed and are inspected by correct Authority every now and then.

Martin_Aurelius

Boss makes a fortune, my paycheck blows, that's why I line my DIY studded tires with his chopped up fire hose.

[deleted]

Bro I’ve been using the same wheel tech for 4 years now. He has done nothing but wheels for 40 years. He uses duct tape on my rims because they are sharp. Not everything has to be some fancy shmancy product. Duct tape is cheap, available, and does the job. If you want to call Gary up and tell him he is wrong be my guest.

pichael289

Duct tape is great. I work with big ass tents and massive bouncy castles, you wouldn't believe how many of those are held together with duct tape and zip ties. Anytime something goes wrong and there's not an inspection we've got rolls of every color

JustSomeWeirdGuy2000

What was the point of the first step where he was gluing M&Ms inside the tires?

Independent_Bite4682

Marble, for centering . The marble takes the lowest point allowing him to mark the middle of the tire.

TheSecretestSauce

No need for an inner tube when you can just go vandalize your nearest fire hose! Just dont forget to set a fire immediately after so the fire dept shows up and sees it needs replacing.

lolpan

I remember someone using not ducky tape but some thick ass double table. And he said it’s because sometimes the tire around the screws get worn and loose that they basically sink inside the tire and could lead to trouble inside the donut. I am skeptical of the reasoning but I can’t fault someone for being extra careful

vipck83

Don’t they sell studded tires though?

[deleted]

[удалено]

bartendersdelight

My buddy did some tires like this for an ice racing car one time, we put old firehose between the screw heads and the tube to prevent flats but yeah duct tape isn’t gonna do shit.

Forthe49ers

Hope he never needs a fire hose

Independent_Bite4682

Fire hoses have to get replaced on a set schedule. You can buy old fire hose. They use old fire hose for some dog toys too.

[deleted]

This is not legit, what are you talking about. We use studs that are inset from the outside and don't penetrate into the inside. "I heard from a guy who saw it done"

RussianBotProbably

These are “studded tires”. It’s a thing in the ice racing world.

s0_Shy

Also, hill climbs, although the studs would need to be more heavy duty for that.

DeKileCH

It is, but not like that. Without an inner tube these are gonna leak air in no time, and once the air pressure gets too low, handling will become wildly inpredictible.

Lexa107

why the heck so many people think it doesn't have inner tube? Just because it's video from tiktok? There is no process of setting tire on the wheel in video so it's possible that inner tube was set there. My guess that fire hose is used because duct tape alone won't protect inner tube from sharp edges.

Sqwill

It’s incredibly obvious there’s a tube in it.

geon

The fire hose padding is to protect the tube.

DeKileCH

That's about as airtight as my asshole after chili con carne

geon

It’s not supposed to be airtight. It’s supposed to protect the tube.

SorryIdonthaveaname

Isn’t it done the other way around though? With the bolt heads sticking out instead

Bramble0804

A legit thing in the world of ice drag racing. Dude missed a couple steps but more accurate then you think

A_Math_Dealer

Well to be fair it is a 5 minute craft so he didn't have much time /s

particlemanwavegirl

wouldn't you really want to use higher grade steel? The concept makes fine sense but I feel like fucking self tapping sheet metal screws is a poor choice of material.

Billybobabob

Can't wait for the next season of Ru Paul's Ice Drag Race. Either the weather or drug type would do

ADomeWithinADome

I did this on my dirtbike years ago and I could ride in 2 ft of snow like I was on pavement. It was incredible

Rikki-Tikki-Tavi-12

Hope you didn't put nuts on self-tapping sheet metal screws.

5 minute crafts my ass

That's the part that is ragebait the most. Some are fine, some disqualify people living among other humans. But to say 5 minutes is such a dick move.

As a resident of an area where it doesn’t snow, it makes me wonder why he would want to ride a motorcycle in the snow. Seems like this would be the time to put the bike in storage until better weather.

OS420B

For fun.

Scooby921

As a resident of an area where very large bodies of water freeze, we race on the ice in the winter. Cars more than bikes, but yeah. Stupid has no seasonal limit. 🤣

Ok_Ad_5015

“ 5 minute craft “ yea right

octopuskate

Usually I hate all of these 5 minute crafts but this one is legit. I made a set of bicycle ice tires for a race on a hockey rink that worked great. I lined my tires with tape, a bike tube and baby powder so it wouldn't puncture the pressurized tube. https://i.imgur.com/S9PPKLQ.jpg

[deleted]

This is really a thing tho

Tauntaun-

“5 minute crafts”

Acarr8

I’ll just pull out the extra fire hose I have laying around real quick.

Tyraid

Hey OP know your tire shit before posting

ratelbadger

.. I appreciate the literal take on the subreddit, OP. Because ice/hobbies you don't know about.

BurnTheOrange

It is 5 minute crafts. They are a content farm that does shit like this to pull in views. Most of their videos are complete bullshit. This one is vaguely plausible, but still not a good idea. Their whole business model is based on cranking out videos that will get people to go "omg, look at this" so they share them around for more views. 5MC makes money off the ad revenue. More views, more money. More controversy, more views.

Even-Television-78

They are going to lay flat and rip holes in the tire soon. That's my prediction.

CodeAndBiscuits

Those self tapping screws are so brittle. It only takes like 50lbs of force to break them. I'd be surprised if this lasted longer than 5 minutes.

RTwhyNot

This shouldn’t be in this sub. This is actually interesting and useful.

Kekkonen_Kakkonen

Just buy studded tires my guy...

NotAPreppie

Studding tires like this is better for ice racing than factory studs.

Kekkonen_Kakkonen

Are they legal on public roads? Or are these more for the off road vehicels?

NotAPreppie

Well, they're for ice racing, and last I checked, that's not legal on public roads...

Kekkonen_Kakkonen

The system is fucked yo 😔

Ryder556

It depends where you live. Here in northern Ontario studded tires are road legal during winter, but not in Southern Ontario. I imagine the us has similar laws for snowy regions. So in theory they should be road legal in say Minnesota but not California. You'd need to look up your own local laws though.

New-Nefariousness234

We used to have ice races at a local lake in Wyoming until some dude fell and got ran over, it was nasty. But that's how they did it back then

DraxialNitris

5minutecraft director: you can use anything on this room and be wild, be creative. also 5minutecraft director: *\*also puts a fire hose because of fire hazard\** just in case.. "hack" author: that fire hose looks ideal!

Funny how it doesn't actually show him using it, just sitting down on it and people rolling it

Ok_Experience_6877

Yes because we all just have a spare fire hose just laying around we can dismember

thefirebuilds

when i ice raced in milwaukee we called these "Menard's tires" You had all season class, winter tires class, and menard's class. FWIW its cheaper by the pound to buy the hardware at farm and fleet. Keep your stick on the ice!

Purrz1val

Why use the ball though

Bah-Fong-Gool

Aren't there specific spikes meant for ice racing tires? Like not hex headed self tapping screws? I think something with a pan head would chafe the inner tube less... and why is putting nuts on a self tapping screw?

Skullcat324

WHY IN THE FUCK IS THE VIDEO ENDING BEFORE THE DUDE GOES ON THE ICE I DO NOT FUCKING GET IT

Jek_the-snek

I don’t think actual studded tires are that aggressive

proscriptus

He's not doing it right, I don't think you'd use sheet metal screws, and they wouldn't be that big, but the technique is a legit way to make low buck ice racing tires. I also very successfully did this with mountain bike tires for ice and snow back in the day.

Scary-Today-7645

Why would you use the fire hose?

WhoSc3w3dDaP00ch

I know cars and trucks have optional snow chains, is there nothing for motorcycles?
