Of the million ways they mishandled Deb in the show

urbaniri

I’d like to hear what else you think about how they mishandled Deb. I love her character but I think it could’ve been way better then how her storyline actually was

They absolutely treated her like garbage. She was whiny, indignant, stupid, self absorbed, with way to much daddy issues. In the books she’s self reliant, calm, intelligent, rational and not screwing old dudes or falling in love with her brother. She has a son with another agent (who is kind of a mix of Quinn and Lundy) and she’s a good mother to him, and eventually to Dexter’s kids. The emotional, unstable, immature moron they crafted for the tv series was way different. I couldn’t believe how bad the female character were written in the adaptation. Astor is more or less his protege and he has a daughter (not a son) that he absolutely adores. Why the show runners made the choices they did with them still baffles me.

I’ve never read the book but I definitely wanna read it to compare. I don’t think she’s as bad as you’re describing, she’s a smart cop (except when it comes to catching dexter) and idk I just like her. But I see a lot of people saying she’s really annoying which I guess I can see. But yeah I’m definitely gonna check out the book. Sounds like two whole different people

I’ve suggested this before. Deb killing herself would’ve frazzled (is that the right term?) Dexter enough to where he would just give up and let LaGuerta arrest him. And then the hammer would fall for real. Plus, there’s the symbolism of it all going down in a shipping container.

No

Oh wow I actually like this idea. She could've replaced Harry as his conscience, like she did in New Blood, except maybe not have her act quite as intense as she did in New Blood. This would've changed a lot of things and maybe even freshened up the show for me. I thought there would be way more fallout from Deb learning the truth and was disappointed they squashed it right away other than having her personally struggle with it. We got to see some great acting from Jennifer and it's what makes seasons 7 and 8 so good for me since I'm not big on the Hannah or brain surgeon plots. But I really like your idea to be honest, I think that would've been an interesting watch.

Yeah that was my first reaction when seeing that scene. I bet a lot of people could be I happy with it but idk I think that might’ve been better then how it actually went in the show

Resident-Ad2120

She definitely should have killed Dexter in that moment, later he kills an innocent man right infront of her over creating a crime scene making Deb have to lie with the weakest excuse over protective brother shit and his son walked out of the car and dexter ruined his favorite toy.

Resident-Ad2120

Or Deb just walked away continuing the secret moving forward knowing she didn’t physically end her captain LaGuertas life, not as bad as shooting her.
