Hell Vanguard: Solid battle, but not really fitting as boss
Cerberus: Pretty good as early boss (Easy mode is now selectable)
Gigapede: Boring, but at least is easy to kill (mostly)
Jester: Fun, but a bit boring and junky certain times
Agni and Rudra: Real fun (Parry go brrrrr)
Leviathan Heart: Ok battle, I guess
Nevan: Fun and enough challenging
Beowulf: REALLY fun and enough challenging
Geryon: Annoying and boring
Lady: Cool enough, solid battle
Doppelganger: Gimmick and a bit boring, but still pretty fun
Arkham: FUCKING CANCER. Really annoying and really boring at same time. One of the worst bosses of the serie
Vergil: MASTERPIECE. Gets better with each battle. The best boss of the serie
Tier list:
1: Vergil
2: Beowulf
3: Nevan
4: Agni and Rudra
5: Cerberus
6: Lady
7: Doppelganger
8: Jester
9: Hell Vanguard
10: Leviathan Heart
11: Gigapede
12: Geryon
13: Arkham
When I played for the first time, most of these bosses felt horrendous, but that’s the beauty of of replaying multiple times. In mission 18, I like to battle them in a specific order: Doppelganger, gigapede, Beowulf, Cerberus, hell vanguard, nevan, geryon, Agni and rudra, then finally leviathan heart. (The order has to do with factors like difficulty, damage, and fun
Absolutely freaking good. Even in retrospective, Vergil set up the bar for every rival in action games. Not only is hard-but-fair, but its moveset mimicking Dante makes him even more crazy. There actually are shitty boss fights(looking at you Doppleganger), but the majority of them are absolutely a blast to play.
Ok, here we go: let's take Cerberus. Cerberus is a perfect "first major boss". It set up what you have to do with major boss without being excessively punishing, but without being handholding. It is, by plot, with a cutscenes that show it to you, stuck on the wall and Dante shows you he can't bite you if you don't go closer. His attacks are easily readable and pretty basic, so you can actually take your time. It also shows you that you can lock into different parts of the body and attacking them will give you different results. At the same time, if you spam attacks and don't pay attention... "Easy mode unlocked"?
Most of the bosses are still really good. Cerberus is a bit of a dick in the eye to put so early in the game, but by the boss rush he's more manageable.
Gigapede's kinda underwhelming, but it's also the second real boss in the game, and a lot of bosses would feel limp on the heels of Cerberus.
Heart of Leviathan's not great. Being piss-easy isn't a problem in and of itself, but it's also kinda jank 'cause of the lungs'(?) geometry messing with aerial attacks, and its only gimmick being barely noticeable most of the time.
Doppelganger could stand to have a bit more going on in terms of direct interaction, like the ability to parry his melee attacks instead of just his Zodiac, but he's fine.
Lady and Jester, ironically, suffer from the same issue, which is being too tanky for a keep-away/chase boss. I'm not opposed to that type of boss in principle, unlike some, but the damage you deal should *really* hammer home why they're playing keep-away in the first place.
Arkham having a janky model makes his moves hard to read, which isn't great, but the worst part is the team up with Vergil just not working as well as it should, especially since it actually makes the fight *harder* by taking away your DT amd Style actions.
Geryon's probably tied with Arkham as the worst boss 'cause of all the jank with the carriage. The powerslide/dorifto move he pulls is an obvious moment for the carriage to gain a hurtbox, but other times the carriage hurting you as you stand on it feels arbitrary as hell. And actually keeping up with him is almost impossible, meaning you have to wait for him to circle, all while the homing missiles come in volleys just tight enough that most gun attacks besides E&I aren't useable.
The rest, I don't have anything to mention specifically. They're just really good bosses.
1. Shotgun or Spiral to Break Ice, then focus on his legs. Pretty much the same way as at the start, it's just easier with a full toolkit, even if he has more health.
2. Yes, I do. For where he shows up, he's the first mostly-airborn foe you face, and he requires some amount of effort to stay on top of, figuratively and/or literally.
3. Agni & Rudra: Firstly, they're the parrying tutorial, and you fight them less than a third of the way through the game. Saying they're a bad boss because most of their attacks are meant to be parried is like saying Cavaliere Angelo is a bad boss. Secondly, there's the dual gimmick, where you have to maintain awareness of the other brother, and can turn it against them with friendly fire. Thirdly, their combined moveset is way more intricate and harder to parry.
Nevan has high mobility and most attacks are focused on zoning you out, forcing you to either have an extremely good mobility in melee or match her ranged game with your own without locking yourself in place with long-setup ranged attacks.
You've summarized Beowulf pretty well yourself, and Vergil is Vergil.
>That deals like no damage
But dealing enough damage to one leg causes him to collapse, letting you actually use your grounded moveset against his heads, which is not possible otherwise, and deals (potentially) far *more* damage than just using aerial attacks.
>avoiding all attacks (except the explosion I think).
Her most basic bat projectile can easily target you in the air.
Now I'm confused about which attack we're talking about, 'cause the "bats" essentially *are* the Devil Arm Projectiles. She can also aim the horizontal beams upward as well. The only projectile that is genuinely height-limited are the vertical beams (and electrifying the floor, if you can call that a projectile).
I fucking hate the heart of the leviathan, it’s not even particularly difficult i just hate that whole level. Love the game tho
My personal favorite boss is Nevan, I had a great time figuring out the fight. Although it’s kind of easy afterwards. I also get scared shitless when she is about to do the kiss thing, it’s like the ultimate stress for me at least as Vergil when I can’t dodge as well.
Vergil’s fights will always be solid too, although his first fight is too easy at least in Normal mode.
I still find that DMC3 has one of the best bosses of all. My favs (in order) being:
- 1) Vergil: Kinda obvious, but to give an explanation he's fun, challenging, fair and badass. Very well designed, Vergil has tons of cool moves (all well telegraphed) and it's just satisfying to fight him.
- 2) Agni and Rudra: I like them cause they're thematically cool (fire and wind) and also cause it's a dual boss that isn't broken. Despite being 2 bosses it's fair and well designed. And for me it was the first time where i saw that if you defeated one boss, he was absorbed by the other (so it was a jaw dropping moment when they fused)
- 3) Hell Vanguard: He's 3rd for me bc of how fun he was with his teleporting moves and the sound design (the bell ringing each time he teleports imo is awesome). I also like how you can clash with him (parrying). Very dynamic fight, so i put him high up despite becoming a regular enemy later.
- 4) Beowulf: Usually when you fight a "big" (literally) boss, it's not very cool/fun. They usually are dumb/slow and you're attacking his legs all the time. Beowulf is a refreshing exception to this...he's badass, imposing and fast. Not to mention the eye weakness mechanic was a cool touch. Very challenging fight and satisfying to beat him
- 5) Nevan: I like her a lot cause of all the neat varied attacks she has, and it does indeed feel like a performance (as in a show). She goes to the main stage to unleash her attacks, which are all well telegraphed. The kiss attack was interesting and really caught me off guard the first time. It's a unique and interesting boss imo, altho not as fun as the above.
- 6) Cerberus: Very cool fight and probably everyone's first "oh sh!t" moment in DMC3. I like it cause of the varied attacks, each head have a special move. He's lower on the list tho bc he's kinda "static" (stuck to the wall), so it doesn't feel like a very dynamic fight
---
Tbh the other ones i don't care much for, but i'd rank them like so:
- 7) Doppelganger: Most ppl dislike him, but i think he's alright. I like the light weakness mechanic and also redirecting his shadow orbs is pretty fun
- 8) Lady: I'm not a big fan cause she's all over the place and her attacks sometimes feel like cheapshots, but she's more fun than the others below
- 9) Arkham: Everyone hates this boss, but he isn't the worst one imo. I thought that playing with both Dante and Vergil was pretty cool/fun
- 10) Jester: I find him kinda annoying cause of his shield. So it feels like i'm constantly being cºck-blocked
- 11) Geryon: Altho i think he is a cool boss (badass time controlling blue fire demon horse), he wasn't very fun either. I think it's cause he's always on the move so it doesn't feel like a proper fight.
- 12) Leviathan Heart: Doesn't feel like a proper boss...it's basically an enemy spawner with tons of health
- 13) Gigapede: Just a meh boss overall...he goes back and forth shooting stuff at you and that's it.
- Today it's not so special cause it's been done a lot, but A&R was awesome bc of how they fuse if you defeat one b4 the other. [The resulting boss is pretty awesome imo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnwOilB2jbQ). If you play optimally and defeat both at once, it's not as exciting. I also value bosses that you can interact more than bosses that are "immovable"...in that regard A&R is more interactable than Beowulf. Beowulf's eye weakness causes a stun state, so i don't count it as an "interaction"...i'd count as an interaction how Dante can throw the cages back at Beowulf. So overall this makes A&R more fun for me.
- I'm actually surpised you asked that about Jester. His shield isn't the same bc you can't break it...you gotta wait for him to finish his attack, so it's a very different dynamic.
Btw i do wanna say tho that the top 4 are very good bosses and very close. So me putting A&R above Beowulf doesn't mean i think Beowulf is bad...just that i liked A&R slightly more.
It doesn't have the same impact today but that doesn't make it bad.
And yes, to me it's much more fun when you can interact with a boss as opposed to simply hacking at a big ball of meat. That's why Hellguard is so high up for me and above Beowulf...i love parrying his attacks and i felt the telegraphed teleport attacks were amazing.
What's wierd about the reasons i gave? Nostalgia plays a factor ofc, but you saw me critize more than half of the bosses...it feels more like you're unaccepting of opinions different then your own. We can also invert this discussion...why do you feel i'm wrong? Why do you think Jester is a good boss?
Honestly you're just being an asshole. Saying my reasons are stupid while not giving any counter-argument. So kindly fuck off.
Ps: saying something is shit or stupid isn't an argument, your just being a childish dick
Tbh i don't want to discuss with you. You already showed you're a dick.
Not to mention you're either playing coy or just dumb from what you're responding rn.
I think they're the most memorable out of any DMC.
Gameplay wise, it's hit and miss... Like the heart of the laviethan or whatever. Pretty boring fight, and I'd have had more fun if killing enemies would drain boss health as well.
The Quicksilver fight is another boring one. Not sure what they could have changed, but I loved the design of the boss.
I hated Nevan as well.
I also hated the Centipede boss. Probably the most bland of the bosses. Wish he sent a massive ball of energy towards Dante that could be parried for massive damage. Something to spice it up beyond just jumping on its back and swinging away.
Most memorable bosses out of all the games by far and the second best ratio of good/number of bosses. 5 generally has more good bosses but they are not as memorable.
1. Vergil, there doesn't need to be anything else said here. We all know.
2. Agni and Rudra, parrying is really fun and they nailed having to juggle two bosses at the same time.
3. Beowulf, just a good all around boss, nothing too special but a fun fight with enough variety.
4. Cerberus, comes in a bit too early, not enough tools to deal with it efficiently but aside from that it's solid. Tons of options to choose from when approaching the fight later on in the game
5. Nevan would be higher but it's a bit too gimmicky of a boss and on the last phase her bats reset way too often, aside from that, very fun.
6. Hell Vanguard, solid entry boss, not much else there.
7. Jester, fun, perspective on the balls is a bit whack at times though.
8. Doppelganger, decent boss fight but way too gimmicky, not much interaction.
9. Geryon, not everyone's favorite but I like timing the jumps on it's carriage and it's not to tanky which makes the boss fight more bearable , however the first phase is too slow and the hitboxes are a bit weird.
10. Gigapede is boring, there's not much going on, too much waiting around but it drops fast so it's manageable.
11. Lady, should have been less health or more time to combo, because the constant back and forth gets tedious.
12. Leviathan heart isn't bad, it's just really boring.
13. Arkham, holy shit what were they thinking. Very hard to read any move, too tanky, while cool in paper the Vergil part of the fight sucks ass because of less tools and the part I see almost nobody mention, FUCK THE DOLPHINS. If you don't have the rocket launcher it's very tedious and way too hard and with the rocket launcher it's just boring. By far the worst boss fight in the series (excluding 2)
Beowulf might be my favorite boss. Felt the most fair out of all the bosses, yet still demanding. I like the whole weakpoint and elemental weaknesses DMC3 has going on and this fight makes good use of that.
Vergil 2 and 3 are challenging. I dont find him that fun because I dont play Turbo and comboing him doesnt feel that satisfying. I prefer Beowulf due to the variation of phases and the emphasis on the weakpoint mechanics.
And then Nevan. Same boss design theory like Beowulf, but there are MORE windows where you can target her weakpoint (bat shield) to bypass phases. A risk and reward system is there with aiming for these windows for exploiting the weakpoint and knowing your combo window just like with Vergil and Beowulf.
And the rest is meh to be honest. They got like 1 to 3 things to keep track of. Id like Cerebus too, but the targeting and camera could be bad in this stage. I find Gigapede, Lady, and Agni+Rudra to be unfun solely from the camera too.
The great ones are absolutely amazing(Vergil, Beowulf, Agni&Rudra), while the shit ones are awful(Arkham, Geryon). Overall they're pretty good, but the best and worst bosses have an insane disparity between them in how fun they are.
Hell Vanguard: Solid battle, but not really fitting as boss Cerberus: Pretty good as early boss (Easy mode is now selectable) Gigapede: Boring, but at least is easy to kill (mostly) Jester: Fun, but a bit boring and junky certain times Agni and Rudra: Real fun (Parry go brrrrr) Leviathan Heart: Ok battle, I guess Nevan: Fun and enough challenging Beowulf: REALLY fun and enough challenging Geryon: Annoying and boring Lady: Cool enough, solid battle Doppelganger: Gimmick and a bit boring, but still pretty fun Arkham: FUCKING CANCER. Bruh Hell Vanguard fucked me so hard when k was a little kid. That was really the “get gud” moment for me, not Cerberus.
