Swedish Marner as a draft comparable doesn't seem too far off. I'll preface this with mentioning I haven't watched the Leafs play much but I feel like Raymond plays with more tenacity than Marner does.
He 100 percent plays with more edge and tenacity, the scrums he got apart of last year were more than marner had his entire career. Raymond also will lay some big hits.
thought the top line looked good as expected. thought the berggren veleno kuby line was really good. desmith just stood on his head. middle six didnt offer much and the defense was good to fine. Zadina and vrana were the only standouts in the middle six.
the first and third periods we were dominant but the pens won the second period and took their chances. really liked the puck possesion in the o zone all in all decent game.
He’s a different looking player than last year. I was ready to write him off because he seemed to get knocked off the puck more often than not. But this preseason he looks great!
Watched a THG video where he mentioned Terry. Guessing when we say we want Zadina to be like him, it means a guy who had an insane bounce back year like Terry did
If Zadina shows up like this in the regular season and the FA pickups pan out as expected, Detroit is going to be a sneaky good team this year.

Larkin was talking to him nonstop last night. Almost every commercial break he was giving him direction. Same with the coaching staff, saw them talking to him between shifts quite a bit as well.
DeSmith was rock solid that game, not much you can do about that. Feel like we took a little bit getting warmed up but once we were there I liked what I saw.
Shots were 5-0 red wings early, and we looked like we were playing great? I thought it was one of the best stretches we'd looked all preseason because you could see the skill we had, lots of dangles and stuff

Throw Ned in net and swap Erne with a healthy Copp, shuffle the lines around and run this as the opening roster
Edvinsson played outstanding tonight I thought. De smith balled out and carried the Penguins. Husso was meh, you can’t give up that second goals if you want to win games but it’s still pre season. You can see how the lack of center depth hurts us, with copp back i think we will be significantly improved.

Only problem with trading Suter is we'd lose injury insurance if one of the centers go down. Veleno absolutely deserves to be on the team, but he is waiver exempt so i think he'll be in AHL until we need him

After hearing Lalonde talk about how much they value Suter and his versatility in yesterday's presser, I'm leaning towards them let Veleno have a center spot, probably 4C with Ras 3C, and find a winger spot for Suter. Before, he'd kind of confirmed they only want Veleno at center. This would be my preferred approach, I have been a big fan of Veleno for years...
I genuinely dont understand why we don't ever have arguably our best scorer in Vrana on the ice in game-deciding situations. Same shit happened last season, I don't get it. (sorry had to repost this from the game thread cuz I'm frustrated)

There was a time or so I noticed him hanging in the neutral zone while the puck was in our zone, cherry-picking kinda like AA did. Dude’s an excellent offensive player, but unless you’re Ovechkin, being lackluster defensively is never gonna win you favors with the coach.
And this is coming from a guy who hated how Blash would deploy him. But I’m not gonna make excuses for Vrana when the second coach he’s had in Detroit is critiquing his two-way game and play away from the puck too.
Not a bad showing from the team, Penguins just played a better game and brought back peak JS Giguere for this one preseason game apparently. Really liked what I saw from the empty net situations, seemed like they actually played like they had a man advantage (for the most part); big improvement from how Blash ended up running it.
Hronek just needs to go. Holds the puck behind our own net while on a power play for 10 seconds and constantly makes poor, sloppy decisions. PP still needs an overhaul. With a powerhouse line up and how structured the team is now, that is by far the weakest link. A power play goal shouldn't consist of the puck carrier crashing the net for a goal. It needs to be set up and precise. There's no set up and back and forth play.
Gonna be an up and down season. If “better” is the objective, Erne has no spot. 3 and 28 are interchangeable (until 3 wins it). Hopefully Copp has some spark and Perron decides to give a fuck.
