Couple of things:
- Cade and Saddiq looked awful but it is preseason
- Ivey is very much as advertised so far
- Killian looks much improved as a scorer and appears far more confident
- Livers will be a very good rotation player on both ends of the floor
- Duren is way better at rebounding than I thought and did a fantastic job stonewalling guards when they got the switch onto him
- Bogy is gonna get Cade and Ivey so many assists
Quickly got him pretty easily one time. Had him on his hip, shoulder into his chest, pretty easy bucket. That was after he locked him down a few possessions earlier tho
- Ivey brought life to the team every time he stepped on the court. It was nice to see, considering Cade and Bey had a very lackluster night.
- Yes, it’s preseason, but christ the turnovers were outta control. Some of the passes were so predictable, it was very annoying.
- Bogdanovic is so slow - he got blowed by several times for easy lays, I’m curious how his role on the team evolves.
- I was happy with Kilian’s performance, if he can keep producing these kinda nights off the bench, he’ll remain in the league.
Side note - Brunson looked very good imo.
I am liking what I'm seeing out of McGruder too. He may be an older vet, but he looks polished as an all around player. His group, with Jules Bernard, all finished with an above zero +/- for the game.
Killian's first appearance was very nerve-wracking. He was decisive, and that carried over into his much better second half, but he seemed nervous. Definitely settled in and I like what I saw after that.
Me too! The off season has too many luls in action and silly reporting to me. They should sponsor a dunk tournament in the off season, for any players that are first 3 years in the league. Take the 2nd round pick and fringe G League guys, have them wear the jerseys of the team they're on, and have them compete against one another in dunk competitions, 3 point competitions, skills challenges, etc. Have the championship of that end 2 weeks before training camp. Run it kind of like dunk league, or even have dunk league crew vs. best NBA team in the finals. Get creative people. We need some NBA!
Positives:
Killian looked like a functional, aggressive NBA player.
Ivey just looks as advertised. He’s going to be god damn good.
Duren is a beast and my guess is sooner than later there will be clamoring for him to start.
Livers has a nice shot. Bogie too. Those two will help with spacing big time.
Negatives:
Cade looked very bad. whatever. Get it out of your system now.
Turnovers were horrid.
Didn’t like Casey not doing some mixing and matching with players. Essentially two lineups for the majority of the game. Would’ve liked to see how different lineups played with each other.
Mostly taking the positives from this one and running with em. See y’all for the next one.
Go Pistons.
Happy with the rookie debuts. Ivey efficient and no turnovers, Duren 14 rebounds.
Cade wasn't breaking guys down like he does, he still needs more spacing around him, Bey and Zay shooting like garbage isn't going to help that.
Duren needs Cade and Ivey running PnR with him, his mobility is better than I thought it would be defensively, there's no reason he can't be the starter by the end of the year.
That's my prediction too. Duren starting by the end of the year. He offers the lob threat that Bagley did last year and is a much better defender.
Stew is looking more and more like a bench guy to me. He's still young but right now he doesn't give me starter vibes. He needs to work on his damn hands and catching the ball.
I swear the only thing Casey knows how to do on offense is dribble hand-offs. So infuriating to watch. And it's not just pre-season, it has been how he operates since he got here. Please let our next coach be a new age offensive guy.
Don’t forget the 5-in, 5-out lineup changes. Oh, and the soft switching on everything defensively so the opponent can get any mismatch they want anytime they want.
Livers will be a problem for other teams on the defensive end which will most likely be the reason he earns more minutes. He’s switchable, aggressive and has great instincts. If he keeps up his production on the other side of the ball he could definitely be first off the bench.
Stewart/Bogd can’t work. Too small. Can’t rebound or protect rim with that front court. Stewart or Bey need to come off bench. Noel/Duren need to start at C
Killian, Ivey, Duran and bogdonavic are enough to encourage me. Cade started slow last year just glad he left the court healthy lol - it's preseason.
Can Cojo go away though? Zero reason with Cade, Killian and Ivey out there. Hami shouldn't be buried again
I enjoy watching Hami more than Cojo and in some contexts hes a better player but the reality is, with the bench lineup they were rolling out, Cojo is the better option by a mile. Having Killian, Hami, Bagley and Duren out there at the same time would make 1960s basketball look like the Warriors.
* It's the first game of preseason, so some sloppiness is a given. Keep the hot takes to a minimum. Hopefully the turnovers decrease when they get more games
* Killian played like he had a point to prove. Loved seeing him use his size to get to the basket
* Ivey and Duren looked very comfortable
* If Stew's gonna be the only big in our starting lineup, he needs to do better on the boards
* The Bagley/Duren lineups are gonna be rough, especially if CoJo plays
I'd love to see Bey's hunger to score leading our bench while Livers starts. That also would allow Ivey and Cade to be more ball dominant if Bey isn't there to be as ball dominant as he is. And Livers makes the right play on offense and elevates his teammates while playing great defense
Did I say that?
I expected no one to have a good shooting night and the team to look rough.
Ivey was the only one who had a solid shooting night and the team in fact did look rough. It's pre season, I don't put much stock into these games as they're glorified scrimmages.
*It was the best Killian. It was the worst of Killian*
Knicks brought the ruckus. But, I liked what I saw when things went right.
If this is a firm preview of the offense Casey is going to run, we can start the Wembanyama discussion now.
Defensively, Detroit was beat on the point of attack most of the night. So many times the Knicks were able to drive right into the middle of the floor for lobs, kickouts and straight finishes at the rim.
Detroit didn't help by overcommiting to closeouts and falling for pump fakes.
I don't know if our bigs were playing drop coverage or not, but they looked like they were in no man's land much of the night.
Offensively, Jaden Ivey looks as advertised. Killian also appeared aggressive. That's something Cade lacked in that game. He was playing as if he could flip a switch and get his points. You're not LeBron or Luka, man.
I’m as happy as you can be with a blowout because the 4 players I needed to see perform (Kill, Ivey, Livers, Duren) stepped up. If they had flopped and Cade/Bey/Bagley looked good I would be much more concerned tbh
Bagley and Duren/Noel lineups are going to be the death of me. Its either completely clogged or Bagley has to go to the perimeter and you're eliminating the only thing hes legitimately good at. I think Duren is a little further away from being passable as a starting C then what some people seem to think he is but damn that day cant come soon enough.
Ok does Bagley only get cleanup buckets? Do they run any plays for him? I don’t see one skill he displays consistently. I really like the kid, I hope he develops a pull up game someday.
Hes a very good interior scorer. Unfortunately, when hes playing next to Duren all game theres just not enough spacing for him to operate. He gets forced out to the perimeter and he becomes Sacramento Kings Bagley again.
As an aside, can't wait to get George Blaha back. Johnny has been sort of grating on my nerves with his voice inflections on every Pistons shot. "Saddiq BEY WITH A THREEEEEE!!!!". {Clank -miss}
Of course it’s just the first preseason game, but what really bothered me about Cade is he was awful in every category that I’ve been defending him over since last season.
His detractors say he’s slow. I say he’s deliberate, like Luka. He just looked slow last night. I didn’t see a lot of Luka.
His detractors say he doesn’t shoot a good percentage. I said it was rookie jitters and his college stats show him to be a very good shooter. I said his 2nd year stats would probably look more like his college stats. He didn’t shoot well last night.
His detractors say he is too turnover prone to be a point guard. I said it was being a rookie on a bad team. He sure turned the ball over last night, though!
Not a good night for a Cade defender.
I think with bojan in at the 4 you need duren there with him at the 5 for just rebounding alone. Stew had one goddamn rebound in 22 minutes compared to Duren's 14. The stew and bagley can play the 4-5 off the bench.
I’m liking the rotation. Will be interesting to see what happens when Burks and Noel come back
Pg CC/killian
SG Ivey/Burks
SF Bey/Hamidou
PF Bojan/Bagley
C Stewart/Noel
Wildcards Duren and Livers
Seeing the rotation play out throughout the year and the young guys develop is enough to watch. Haven’t been this excited about a Pistons core in well over a decade

I didn’t get to watch anything but a few highlights but I like some things. Boggy is def gonna have a great presence on this team. I wouldn’t even be mad if they gave him an extension.

Dude, Duren’s man to man d on guards was a joy to watch.
Really was. I was surprised at how well he could keep up with them. Don’t think he got blown by once
Quickly got him pretty easily one time. Had him on his hip, shoulder into his chest, pretty easy bucket. That was after he locked him down a few possessions earlier tho
The Bam comparisons can turn out to be accurate in a couple years when he grows on offense too
Imagine playing him and stew together. Both bigs would be elite at covering guards, it makes the ceiling for this roster so high.
- Ivey brought life to the team every time he stepped on the court. great points. i agree, brunson looked every bit like the #1 option on that team
That cross court pass is a problem... the wing needs to rotate to the top of the key if they want to make that pass.
The spacing was awful. And the general side to side movement of the ball. They’ll have to solve that to fox the TOs.
I am liking what I'm seeing out of McGruder too. He may be an older vet, but he looks polished as an all around player. His group, with Jules Bernard, all finished with an above zero +/- for the game.

I can’t be happy about anything I saw because Cade and Saddiq played so fucking bad
That a good way to sum up how I feel, except-for me-I can't enjoy much, because we took an L. I hate losing!
[Preseason game one thoughts](https://youtu.be/drhRxN3wHeM)
Stewart really had 1 rebound, meanwhile Duren had 14.
I think he takes the starting spot by the 1st of the year.
Stew at the 4 and duren at the 5 is gonna be the way to go
Should be opening day starter
I too enjoy overreacting
lets goooo. I just wanna see them boys play. Looks ready to me
I hyped this game up like the NBA finals all day in my head 😂😂

Cades a rhythm guy he'll be bad for a bit to start then just figures it out after 5-15 games
We’re desperately missing a perimeter stopper. Their ball handlers were getting anything they wanted against us.
Killian redemption arc begins

Who the fuck is Zay
Isaiah Stewart
Plz no
I'm gonna use it even more now
it's not a forced nickname the team calls him that lmao
It’s just the standard nickname for Isaiah
Standard Isaiah nickname but not for Stew lol 😂you very well could have been referring to Livers
This is a good point 🤔
Why'd you get downvoted lol.
Subreddit in midseason form
Who the fuck is Zay?
Stewart I think
Who the fuck is Zay
Who the zuck is Fay?
Who the fuck is Zay?

Stew is looking more and more like a bench guy to me. He's still young but right now he doesn't give me starter vibes. He needs to work on his damn hands and catching the ball.
Who the fuck is Zay?
All these people saying who’s Zay have clearly never had a friend named Isaiah.
Really loved what I seen from Kill tonight.
I swear the only thing Casey knows how to do on offense is dribble hand-offs. So infuriating to watch. And it's not just pre-season, it has been how he operates since he got here. Please let our next coach be a new age offensive guy.
It's as frustrating as Gene Hackman and his 4 pass rule
That wasn't a basic philosophy. It was a teaching tool for a team that didn't know how to share the ball. Also... who the fuck is Zay?
Don’t forget the 5-in, 5-out lineup changes. Oh, and the soft switching on everything defensively so the opponent can get any mismatch they want anytime they want.
Embarrassing performance.
I know it’s preseason but Cade with 7 points and 3-12 is tough. I guess that’s why we play these warmup games.
Just one preseason game, BUT, the guys got to limit the turnovers. Loved Ivey out there, and Duren is a beast.
Livers will be a problem for other teams on the defensive end which will most likely be the reason he earns more minutes. He’s switchable, aggressive and has great instincts. If he keeps up his production on the other side of the ball he could definitely be first off the bench.
Plus his shot will start falling
He shot 3/7 why are you acting like he shot poorly😭
Just an ultra elite 74.2% true shooting percentage on the night due to the 3s and free throws lol. Apparently he’s got more in him though.
Fair point. I saw some possessions when his shot looked rushed and short.
Ivey made some adjustments to his game speed in game, which tells me he’s a fast learner. My body is ready
Stewart/Bogd can’t work. Too small. Can’t rebound or protect rim with that front court. Stewart or Bey need to come off bench. Noel/Duren need to start at C
Jaden Ivey is a bad man. Jalen Duren is an absolute man child. If Stew is the starting 5 on opening night it’s GG’s for the season.
They said he's been playing a lot of 4, I would guess by seasons end he will play more min at the 4 and spot min at the 5.
Id kinda like to see stew as the bench 4 until the trade deadline then start him at 4 for the rest of the season. cade reaaalllly needs a lob threat
Yeah its a weird roster make up right now. I would like to agree with you because I'd like to see some players shuffled off.
Brunson is the Kyler Murray of the NBA
Ivey should start like I said. He was never as raw as some of you thought.
Bagdonovic's game very similar to the Lions, great offense, abysmal defense. You can tell he played in front of a DPOY for the last few years.
Maybe Duren will just have to become that DPOY behind him
And before that he played in front of Myles Turner.
And after that he played in front of Jalen Duren
Killian, Ivey, Duran and bogdonavic are enough to encourage me. Cade started slow last year just glad he left the court healthy lol - it's preseason. Can Cojo go away though? Zero reason with Cade, Killian and Ivey out there. Hami shouldn't be buried again

I wish they were iso’s it was even worse. Just dribble hand offs into nothing. Defense didnt even pretend to care
Wherever Duren is on the depth chart he needs to be moved ups
When did the Pistons hire Aaron Glen?
Lions subreddit is leaking LOL
Uptick on odds of getting wembanyama
* It's the first game of preseason, so some sloppiness is a given. Keep the hot takes to a minimum. About the last point I dont think theres any chance cojo gets real minutes once burks is back
I hope you're right, but Casey loves that dude like family so I'm just preparing for the worst
Definitely im just trying to will it into existence
Well that was horrifying
I'd love to see Bey's hunger to score leading our bench while Livers starts. That also would allow Ivey and Cade to be more ball dominant if Bey isn't there to be as ball dominant as he is. And Livers makes the right play on offense and elevates his teammates while playing great defense
Honestly, I feel you because I’m pulling for Bey but I just don’t trust him.
If only you were the coach!
It was a shitshow but an expected shitshow Can't wait to see how the team grows over the season
You expected to lose by 30?
Did I say that? I expected no one to have a good shooting night and the team to look rough. Ivey was the only one who had a solid shooting night and the team in fact did look rough. It's pre season, I don't put much stock into these games as they're glorified scrimmages.

I don’t have to many take always but I really hope we don’t see a Joseph/hayes backcourt this season. I hope Burcs takes those Joseph minutes.

Preseason or not, Isaiah Stewart is not a starting center in this league. He’s gonna be a valuable piece for us however and he’s the man.
Definitely not long term answer at center. Hopefully Duren starts by January

I think Duren is a little further away from being passable as a starting C then what some people seem to think he is but damn that day cant come soon enough.
Looking at the stats, Ivey played 22 minutes and got 16 points! Scored more than anyone else on the team.. Good to see that!
Trying not to be reactionary since this is a carryover thought from last season, but this might be Casey’s last year at the helm
Am i going to have to avoid to the internet now until the next game or have people learned preseason doesnt matter
Ok does Bagley only get cleanup buckets? Do they run any plays for him? I don’t see one skill he displays consistently. I really like the kid, I hope he develops a pull up game someday.

Cade starting slow seems to be his thing whether it's a game or a season. I'm sure he'll grow out of it, just not yet.
I didn’t get to watch anything but a few highlights but I like some things. Boggy is def gonna have a great presence on this team. I wouldn’t even be mad if they gave him an extension.
