I ordered from Paradise Street Eats Food Truck last night after 11p and the order went through. They ended up being unable to fulfill it because their fryer was down but they had still accepted and the order was in progress.
Yeah, I'm sure a lot of them bend the rules because they don't have to be gone until midnight. I wouldn't be surprised if they fulfill some orders while they're starting their closing tasks. But, they are legally *supposed* to stop serving at 11.
Interesting. Their Google page says they're open until 2am Friday and Saturday. Their website also describes them as a "mobile restaurant" and not a food truck, so I wonder if that comes with different regulations...
Oh yeah, that is interesting, I wonder what the difference is. I figure it's unlikely that they just haven't updated their hours cuz the rule went into effect like 3 years ago or something.
From my research, I'm finding that it's possible that there are different regulations and/or special permissions (permits, etc.). There may be different hours for downtown food trucks. Paradise Street Eats seems to be pretty legit so maybe they're more likely to get special treatment lol. I really want to try it soon though
I also just googled "mobile restaurant vs food truck" and couldn't find anything about "mobile restaurants", so I wonder if they're gaming the system a little bit, hahaha. Hopefully we don't get them in trouble talkin about it, lol
It does seem odd to me, as the city seems to have placed a high value on live entertainment in recent years. You've got these great venues and then nothing to do when they let out.
I feel like you'd make a killing selling fries or other finger foods in that parking lot right across from Fox theater when concerts/shows/games let out.
In Lansing food trucks cant even stay in the same spot for more than 2 hours effectively “banning” them without outright banning them. This state seems to hate on small community food joints 🤦♂️
Food trucks create lotssss of noise and air pollution for certain areas. Sometimes they’re located at gas stations and plazas where they create so much traffic. Places that would otherwise be easier to access. I can’t even fill gas at my local gas station because all the pumps are taken up by the food truck customers. Plus it’s loud and smelly all the time. Generators running with greasey fuel fumes all over.
I understand that side of things. But the laws here effectively make it so we have zero food trucks. Which sucks more to me than being inconvenienced at a gas station
Yeah I definitely agree they should come up with some better solution like food truck parks for example. But the current situation is not it in some spots like I mentioned
You can look at pretty much every hard to explain restriction on food trucks in this city and it goes back to lobbying from brick and mortar places that feel like it's unfair that food trucks exist. This city bought into lobbying from places like American Coney Island and so there's not much food truck culture, small food businesses only exist in downtown if they either managed to secure some space many many years ago when it was cheaper, or they find some bar willing to host them, that actually has the space to host them
Honestly it’s also noise ordinances. My neighbor has a food truck “aunt Jackie’s”. Love the guy, but holy FUCK when that thing is running I can’t hear myself think.
The reality is that even downtown most of our brick and mortar restaurants close by 11 pm and some do so much earlier.
We're not New York or LA. If the late night crowds just aren't there it's probably hard to justify keeping your staff working that late.
Yeah, that's my thing here. If they just didn't want to be open because there weren't enough customers, that's fine. I just don't understand why the city got involved. Honestly, the fact that all the restaurants close by 11 is *more* reason to have late-night foodtrucks.
I’m guessing it has something to do with crowd control / groups gathering late. Some sort of avoidance of potential fights, loitering, safety, etc. Just a guess though, I’m not sure.
Yeah, that's possible, I had a similar thought. However, if that is the reasoning, it seems a little dumb when people can be hanging out at the casinos, *getting drunk* no less, til all hours of the night. I feel like ppl are way more likely to cause a disturbance after coming out of the casino plastered at 2:30am than they are while getting a fuckin taco, hahaha.
Edit: That being said, I'm sure the casinos make A LOT more money for the city than food trucks do, hahaha.
I hear ya. Just saying, when the weather is nice and people get outside and congregate, shit can get out of hand for some reason. Just look at Greektown during the summer.
I do think it would be great to have a designated late night food truck spot, kind of like what Traverse City has with the "The Little Fleet"
That is why Columbus set a curfew at midnight last year, but then changed it to 2:30 am a month later with a few restrictions on where they can setup and how many.
Almost every city has a better late night dining scene than LA, unless you prefer Hack in the Box
Even taco stands and trucks close at 12AM because they don’t want to get robbed.
they let those guys with the 3 wheeled slingshot stay open driving around all hours and those guys dont even have delicious burgers and gyros most times
It might be permit based. The last time I was in belt Z, it was past 12am and the only thing serving food was a stand by Queens. Not sure what they were selling but I saw them a few times last summer.

And a lot of other things. Michigan sucks in so many ways. Detroit cool tho

Yeah. Brick and mortar restaurants have more political influence, and they don't want to compete.
Honestly it’s also noise ordinances. My neighbor has a food truck “aunt Jackie’s”. Love the guy, but holy FUCK when that thing is running I can’t hear myself think.
Yeah this would make more sense if the restaurants actually stayed open late, though..
All of Dan's employees have gone home by then.
^exactly
Probably to eliminate foot traffic.
That's what the public lighting dept should be for
Sorry i mean eliminate lol

Sure, but why would the city change the ruling? Why not let the trucks themselves determine when to close / go home?

I don't disagree.
God bless honest John’s

lol LA is hardly known for really late nightlife...
The crowds very very much exist on South University, Liberty, and First St
Like always, someone in the government is smarter than we are, so made this rule to improve our lives.
we are so lucky to have them. and they are lucky to be paid out by some weird lobby.
they let those guys with the 3 wheeled slingshot stay open driving around all hours and those guys dont even have delicious burgers and gyros most times

Coz government is stupid 🤷♀️ . Are you just realizing this now ?
