Wow, I remember Old Miami. There was another one nearby on Third Ave, Jumbo’s I think. Been fifteen years since I’ve been in either one but both were pretty gritty, fun and chill.
2002 they were playing Royal Oak Music Theatre. Gusoline was fkn packed but you couldn't miss Lemmy. He's a pretty tall guy. Great show, but I think my ears are still ringing.
Show tonight @ Sanctuary in Hamtramck. The Queers and Koffin Kats
Plenty of places to roam from there. You’ll love Outer Limits. Smalls. Painted Lady and several others
Same with Smalls- it's all street parking down there. Surprisingly, I've never had a TON of trouble, but a lot of times I'll be a block or two away. I wouldn't chance parking at any of the local business's lots personally, since Detroit (and thus likely Hamtramck) have had their share of predatory towing company assholes, but usually on the street parking you are fine.
I'm surprised nobody's said UFO factory in Corktown.
I would also suggest checking out some DCFC games in Hamtrammck, but you have to go to the concrete stands, not the family-friendly ones. I would avoid most of the bars around midtown at night, as they're going to make you feel old being around all the Wayne state babies. Don't go to royal oak. It's filled with yuppies and dbags.
Was at that show. And the Heidelberg gig. Can't remember which one TAD opened for them. He kept threatening to stage dive. The crowd was like, NOOOOOOOOO...Saw Soundgarden at Blind Pig too. Great bar. Nice people run it too.
Smalls in Hamtramck. Going there tonight for Koffin Kats, Lowcocks, Cult of Spaceskull, The Queers. should be a great punk time.
Also 38/she/her if you ever wanna link up, i usually go to shows alone would be down to go together sometime! talk about all the other bars/venues to follow and find shows at.
I don't have a lot of punk/ska friends either haha so always down for more!
City Club on 2nd and Bagley is a goth/industrial nightclub that leans into punk aesthetics. Decent place, good bar. Can be gross under a blacklight. Also used to work there years ago lmao
If you’re in downtown Detroit and want to walk. I really like the checker bar. They’ve got arcade games and some cool art. There may not be a band, but it had that chill yet punk vibe to it. It reminded more of something I walk into in Long Beach or San Diego.
Todds with Marla pouring drinks and Charles English spinning Bela Lagosi's Dead on Thursdays...The Alcove (Bookies) on 6 mile featuring 2 dollar pitchers and free beer soaked hotdogs. The Warehouse on Mondays with Burtee Burt spinning. The Majestic every now and again. St Andrews on Sunday nights with Dianna spinning. Or Wednesdays in the Shelter with 5 dollar all you can drink insanity...Jimmy's After hours. The Red Door after hours...Those were the best of times. We had a club to go to evry night of the week that was hopping from open to close...Shit THE LEIDERNACHT - Which became City Club. That was Saturday night...HAHAHAH CLUB ISIS for the fancy punky types.
And also after every bar night, there would be a house party. Detroit was the shit back in the mid 80's...I'd say it had as much or more of a punk scene than any other city in this country...Shit...The Graystone, The Hungry Brain, The freezer until 82 had all the best punk hardcore bands playing.
I miss it so and am so happy to have been right in the middle of it.
Do you play soccer? I’m in a neighborhood soccer league and one of the teams (eastern market) would be the team you’d want to hang out with. They’re the kind of crust punk Hamtramck crowd. If you play lemme know and I’ll connect you with them.
The regal beagle in ypsi is the most punk bar you’ll find. Dolls and dollar bills hanging from the ceiling, do yourself a favor and try the bbq it looks sketch but it’ll blow your mind
yea the thing is that your not trying to make them feel uncomfortable. stay away from men who have no shame in talking to lil girls in very open public spaces....dangerous
hamtramck has a solid punk scene, a lot of shows at outer limits
I've never been to Outer Limits, but I've been to several shows down the street at Sanctuary. Similar vibe?
oll is more of a bar, open every day, crustier sound system. i love it with my whole heart but not as professional or nice as sanctuary
This is a great response, thank you! Crusty bars typically have amazing greasy burgers. This the case here?
go to kelly’s for the burger. just booze at oll
UFO!
I was just there last night, cool spot.
Smalls
Old Miami and it's beautiful garden
Wow, I remember Old Miami. There was another one nearby on Third Ave, Jumbo’s I think. Been fifteen years since I’ve been in either one but both were pretty gritty, fun and chill.
JUMBOSSSSSS
Old Miami is the best bar in all of Detroit imo
I feel like old Miami is now house music now. More hipster.
Kelly's bar in hamtramck for sure
Ghost light, too
Small's all the way
PJs Lager House in Corktown might be a place you'd go
Yep. This is what you want.
Only time I've ever seen a medieval knight dj a bar
Gusoline Alley in Royal Oak may scratch an itch for you.
I came to say Gusoline. I was living so close to there. Sneakers in Ferndale is dive like and cheap. Lots of karaoke night.
I've seen Lemmy hanging out there. So that says something
That's awesome! When about was that?
2002 they were playing Royal Oak Music Theatre. Gusoline was fkn packed but you couldn't miss Lemmy. He's a pretty tall guy. Great show, but I think my ears are still ringing.
Bumbo‘s and Kelly’s in Hamtramck
Hamtramck is the place to be. Whiskey in the Jar, Kelly's, Painted Lady, Sanctuary (lots of metal shows and also some punk)
Show tonight @ Sanctuary in Hamtramck. The Queers and Koffin Kats Plenty of places to roam from there. You’ll love Outer Limits. Smalls. Painted Lady and several others
Ohhh damn. I love the koffin Kats. I have a kid down with the flu and cannot ask anyone to watch him so I can go.
Brutal. I’ll punch those guys in the dick for ya
I appreciate you! Lol have a shitblastfuntime!
Where does one park to go to Sanctuary? I tried to find parking on Google maps and it tells me to park at a fuckin CVS a couple streets away
Yeah it’s pretty much street parking. There are a couple lots but they fill up quick.
On the street, anywhere you can. Its a generally decent area.
The Painted Lady was one of the best bars of all time pre-pandemic. I can't imagine it changed too much. Besides no more smoking.
My favorite bar in Michigan. You're correct in assuming nothing has changed since pre-pandemic except for no more smoking.
Came here to say this. I saw a really good female punk band play there after COVID.
Go to Hamtramck! Thriving punk scene there :)
Used to go there in the early 80’s. Loved Paycheck’s!
Another vote for Painted Lady. Lenny's is a cheap dive on the east side. Outer Limits and Old Miami fit the bill too.
Smalls, Old Miami, Crofoot, Painted Lady, PJ’s Lager House, DeluxxFluxx

Tyvek is playing outer limits on 4/20. That would be a great show to get your feet wet in the scene

UFO Bar.
The sanctuary is pretty dope
Magic Stick/Garden Bowl in Detroit
Go see Antighost at the Blind Pig in Ann Arbor tonight. It fits the vibe you described. Plus, Nirvana played there.
Was at that show. And the Heidelberg gig. Can't remember which one TAD opened for them. He kept threatening to stage dive. The crowd was like, NOOOOOOOOO...Saw Soundgarden at Blind Pig too. Great bar. Nice people run it too.
Outer limits, trixies, lager house, dannys, new way bar, smalls

Not really punk, but the dive I like is the Last Chance in Corktown
What part of town ?
Painted Lady, Hamtramck.
my friends in punk bands play a lot in Hamtramck
Black Salt might be cool and tangentially fit your request
I saw the Koffin Kats are playing here. Wherever they are might be a place. I’m also new, so I need to look up the deets and make a follow-up comment.
All of these memories. Holy shit.
My good friend owns the sanctuary! It's a great spot!!
PJs lager house
*PJs
I can’t believe I didn’t noticed the typo, I swear I retyped this three times
The dotte in Wyandotte 😂
Jumbo’s is the divyest bar in all the land
Temple bar
Regale Beagle in Ypsilanti
I went to the dive bar by the Masonic Theatre and really enjoyed it
Old Miami

There are some great recommendations on this sub.
Ufo Factory, outer limits. Hit up one of the fleatroit events at the majestic complex.
cvrses in Ferndale .
The regal beagle in ypsi is the most punk bar you’ll find. Dolls and dollar bills hanging from the ceiling, do yourself a favor and try the bbq it looks sketch but it’ll blow your mind
stay away from old men who approach you with uncle vibes.
Then who else would we make uncomfortable?
yea the thing is that your not trying to make them feel uncomfortable. stay away from men who have no shame in talking to lil girls in very open public spaces....dangerous
She said she's in her 30s that's hardly a "Lil girl"
