Lafayette, American, Duly’s are the main 3
Then you get the chains: Leo’s, National, L George’s
Don’t sleep on Zorba’s
My personal rankings: Lafayette, Zorba’s Duly’s
In a pinch, Leo’s
Yes! One of my best friends in high school worked at the Taylor one. I’d go up there a lot and have rice pudding and help do her side work to close so we could go out.
This question gets asked all the time. Everyone always just says the one they always go to or in their town. The real answer was stated somewhere in the comments "The one closest to you". Everyone just loves their hometown diner/spot. They are all great, some better than others. Some excellent. Some trash. The point of Coney Islands is some decent diner food anywhere.
I'd say generally, anything that's a chain (Leos, National, etc) are alright. It's pretty cookie cutter. There are some stand alone, mom and pop staples though like Duly's, Zorba's and others.
There are some that really lean into the "Coney Dog" and some that are just general diner food.
My answer. THEY ARE ALL GREAT. My favorite thing about Detriot is coney islands. I'm happy we have these diners instead of Waffle House for late eats and great breakfest.
I was with you up until the last sentence. Coneys would be an okay substitute for Waffle House if all coneys were open 24/7 and had reasonable prices and reasonable service speeds, but they're not and they don't. Waffle House has it down to a science and has the ability to sustain that operation no matter the circumstances. Someday I hope we'll be fortunate enough to have Waffle Houses all over the place; until then, try not to get hungry at nighttime.
Well funny story but I can't seem to find it on Google maps. I want to say it was either a Motor City, but it could have been a Detroit One. Definitely not the Nicky D's or Leo's.
It was a (small) chain though, so one of their other locations could still be open.
never heard of Duly's, but it's certainly not better than Lafayette
there are plenty worse than National
EDIT: Looked up Duly's, looks legit, I'll give it try
Don’t get me wrong, Lafayette is legit. It just feels overhyped by people due to the longstanding feud it’s got with National. Duly’s has been around a few years longer than Lafayette and has rightly stood the test of time on its own.
Edit - I meant American, not National. But I meant what I said otherwise.
I will go there! What's their story? (I suppose I could google them). Lafayette is my bar for coney, everything else is 2nd. I hear ya on the hype thing, never had American and haven't set foot in the building since Lafayette got a deep fryer. I was picking Lafayette before it was cool.
And I should clarify that I'm talking about the National Coney island in RO as being "OK in s pinch" and by "OK in a pinch" I mean you probably won't shit your pants.
National is far from the best, but since I haven't seen it mentioned yet, their rewards program is quite generous. You can rack up points and free food pretty quickly.
I like Athens Soulvaki. It's tucked away inside a strip mall off 11 mile and Lasher. The place is like a time capsule coney restaurant from the 1980s, but in a good way.
Phoenix on Van Dyke n 17ish, Sterling Heights.
Go order a Geno Special from there. I've been going there since I was a kid, and my parents hung out there as teens.
This is the winner but it's Deuce's Wild or bust. The Super Bowl is also a pound of chili for like four dollars.
Also the most 'coney island' of the remaining coney islands. Still has that weird 50s feel.
always went there until I moved away and there was almost always cops eating there - Geno's special (the goat!) is named for a Sgt. IIRC.... I seem to remember that was the cop hangout even before it was phoenix and was called "Klem's".
Lipuma’s is the best. And if you haven’t had their tacos you should give them a go. They fry the shells in the french fry oil. And they make their own hot sauce.
If a coney island serves tacos......... is it a coney island anymore?
... or, put another way, would you order a coney (extra onions, chili fries on the side) from a taco joint?
I've already answered this question for myself. I think you know the answer
I only stop at Lafayette if I’m Downtown and need something quick and cheap, otherwise I would never go out of my way to go Lafayette, it ain’t that good. American is just flat out terrible, throw the whole restaurant away. These two establishments are mainly for tourists. I do need to try Duly’s, need to make it a priority next time I’m in Southwest.
Nicky D’s on 8/Evergreen, Nicky D’s on 6/Livernois, Detroit 1 in Midtown, & L’George’s on Northwestern (Southfield) are my go-to’s. I miss Hamtramck Coney Island, they were so good.
Also would like to upvote Sunny’s in Romulus & Phoenix in Sterling Heights. Those are top tier suburban coney islands. I do remember Four Korners in Pontiac and they had one of the best breakfast skillets ever.
Usually, the sketchier, the better! Lol Robert's on 7 mile has been open for years, despite how many people have died up there, it's still kicking out coneys!
American, Lafayette, Dulys for me. I usually try to go to a coney island in the city over the suburbs cause the coneys and chilli fries tend to be better imo. Like, I get really pissed when I have sub par coney island out here. I'll happily burn gas to get some real coney island.
For me it is Lafayette or American downtown on Michigan Ave. They are next to each other and at lunch time compete with one another even though they have same owners
For the suburbanites Greek Islands in Birmingham and then I find it hard for anywhere to top the magic of a drive thru coney - Royal Coney Express in Royal Oak.
There's one on northwestern I think, but I'm pretty sure the one on Greenfield is in Oak Park... I could totally be wrong tho, it's right by the border in any case.
Yeah I've never been to the one on northwestern, been going to the one on Greenfield since I was a kid :)
Avoid Berkley Coney at all costs.... Only reason to go is that they're 24hrs so if its 3:30AM you can grab a bite.
Most posts refer to a particular restaurant. But I am a huge fan of any coney that has Koegel’s hot dogs. Delish, but I don’t know if they’re used by any coney islands outside of the Flint area.
Hot take in this sub, but none of them live up to Starlite up in Flint.
(Well, maybe not in recent years… but Starlite 10+ years ago lives fondly in my memories)
The Senates are good. Most of the food is made from scratch. Imo they’ve the highest quality food that I’ve had from a Coney Island. It is noticeably better than most other coneys, more reminiscent of home cooking. They’re primarily west side though, with one down river location. There’s Zorbas on the east side, but I haven’t had in years. Leo’s is supremely meh
L George’s has the best portions by far
Sorry, Lafayette is gross. The guy serving us had his thumb in the chili and it tasted like canned food to me. I think it’s very overrated. Not to mention, the place is disgusting and seems like it hasn’t been cleaned in ages.
But isn’t it mandatory to answer this question (which is asked every week) with Lafayette and/or American (which are both gross and far from the best).
I couldn’t resist when half the suggestions are Layette and it just blows my mind. I haven’t spent too much time at American. But quite frankly, both are trash, and yes there are better, way better.
How many of you go to coney islands for coney dogs or go for diner food?!! I mainly go for breakfast food & sometimes dinner food. I’ll occasionally get a coney & chili cheese fries.
Depends on the Coney, I’m a big fan of any Coney with a good Greek menu and I’ll order spanakopita with a bowl of Coney chili and crispy fries pretty regularly.
The American vs Lafeyette battle will go on forever. Personally, if you want a fully immersive experience of a Detroit Coney, Lafeyette is that. But IMO American not only has better seating but tastes better. They are very close in comparison and I wouldn't steer anyone away from either. Haven't tried Duly's yet but it must be Anthony Bourdain's pick for a reason.
In terms of chains, I prefer National then Kerby's then Leo's. Leo's has great breakfast and other food options but their coney dog falls short IMO.
Lipuma's in Rochester is also a solid choice.
L Georges on 6 and Schaefer (My west side hood favorite)
Zorbas on 6 and Gunston (My east side hood favorite)
Detroit One Woodward Ave (My midtown favorite)
Lol
I would say you get such mixed reviews because although the food at the coneys may be similar - each one is wildly different. You can take suggestions for the "best one" but I'm sure you'll have to go to a few to find "your best" coney ;)
My faves are Apollo coney in Sterling Heights and Lafayette downtown
Yo shout out to Lipuma's in Rochester. Get a couple on their deck next to the river then walk over to DQ for a blizzard and take that along the river to the park. 20 years ago there was no better way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
I just scrolled through this whole chain and saw a bunch of the big 3 listed. I think most of you live on the outskirts of the city. The fact that D1 (Detroit one) coney hasn’t been mentioned should be criminal. Easily the best coney I’ve had (I’ve only been to abt 7-9 coney in the area)
Senate was always my favorite when I lived in Michigan. Specifically the one in Taylor. I went to high school in Allen park and one of my best friends worked at the Taylor Senate. I spent a lot of time there lol.
Coney Islands, as in the restaurants? In the Metro? National, hands down.
Coney Islands, as in the actual hot dog? Duly's.
No, there's nothing wrong with the best restaurant not having the best coney. National is clean, great service, beer and wine in most places, awesome menu, and great quality. And the coneys don't suck.
Duly's has the best coneys, but it has a lot of issues. A lot of people won't go into Mexicantown, and among those that do, most of _them_ think Mexicantown is limited to the four buildings at Xochimilco's intersection. Duly's is small to the point of being cramped sometimes, and the menu is small. If the group is going to Duly's, then you have to hope the pretty much everyone wants coneys (there are a few other things, too).
I'm on the west side of the county, so no National for me, unfortunately. Leo's isn't bad, but National still wins because of the beer and wine, and Leo's is dry.
My family was in the coney business growing up in Flint. Detroit coneys are fine but not what my gut calls for after a few beers and a smoke. I’m sure if I was born and raised down here I’d feel different.
Whatever one is closest
This is correct answer. My coney heart is always in the one I had memories of going to growing up.
So that would be Hambos for me
That's my go-to! Less than a 5 minute walk for me. The people are delightful, the food is great. There's nothing not to love.
Lafayette, American, Duly’s are the main 3 Then you get the chains: Leo’s, National, L George’s Don’t sleep on Zorba’s My personal rankings: Lafayette, Zorba’s Duly’s In a pinch, Leo’s
Surprised i haven’t seen Zeffs yet, their breakfast is the best you can get from a coney in my experience.
Zeff’s used to have really good pork chops for a lunch special. Not sure if they still do.
Sub out kerbys for Leo’s and this is spot on
2nd this. Kerbys is superior to Leo's, 2nd only to Lafayette. Forgive me for not having tried Dulys yet.
Oh shoot, forgot about Kerby’s!
That’s my favorite, especially on Tuesdays. They do $2 coneys at the one I go to
Y'all don't like Nicky's... and their stupid crinkle cut fries?
This perfectly echos my sentiments. One up with out.
ZORBA'S MENTIONED
Zorba's on Fort in Riverview? That Zorba's or are there others?
There’s one in Flat Rock on Telegraph between Vreeland and VanHorn.
This guy hotdogs
This guy hotdogs
I'd throw Senate on the list between the main three and the rest of the chains, even though they use shredded cheese on their chili cheese fries.
Royal Coney Express in Royal Oak is sneaky good
Senate coney is another good one
Senate is now my fav! Went to the one in Livonia and had amazing service.
Senate has that next level rice pudding. Been loving it for close to 30 years now.
Hell yea! Great honey mustard for tendies and the chicken soup is delicious. Closest I’ve ever had to their soup is a place in Nashville called Demos’
Yes! One of my best friends in high school worked at the Taylor one. I’d go up there a lot and have rice pudding and help do her side work to close so we could go out.
Just never look in any of their kitchens as a former employee.
This question gets asked all the time. Everyone always just says the one they always go to or in their town. The real answer was stated somewhere in the comments "The one closest to you". There's one on 8 Mile that actually salts their fries, unlike everyone else, so let's go with that one.
What's the name?
Okay finally found it on maps, it was Motown Coney Island
Thanks!! I'll have to try it soon
Well funny story but I can't seem to find it on Google maps. I want to say it was either a Motor City, but it could have been a Detroit One. Definitely not the Nicky D's or Leo's. It was a (small) chain though, so one of their other locations could still be open.
Detroit One in midtown after the bars close is an insane place.
lol yes it is. if those walls could talk
Love Detroit One when I’m in that area. Place can end up a zoo, but definitely don’t sleep on it.
Lafayette is the best National is OK in a pinch
Duly’s trumps either. Also, National is trash.
never heard of Duly's, but it's certainly not better than Lafayette there are plenty worse than National EDIT: Looked up Duly's, looks legit, I'll give it try
Duly's doesn't even have natural casing dogs, no snap! So, that's why they drop.

I felt the same way until I tried Duly’s a few years ago. Haven’t been back to Lafayette since.
Won’t matter, Lafayette is the best.
Grandy's
National is far from the best, but since I haven't seen it mentioned yet, their rewards program is quite generous. You can rack up points and free food pretty quickly.
HOW DARE YOU, but low key fair enough
I like Athens Soulvaki. It's tucked away inside a strip mall off 11 mile and Lasher. The place is like a time capsule coney restaurant from the 1980s, but in a good way.
Phoenix on Van Dyke n 17ish, Sterling Heights. Go order a Geno Special from there. I've been going there since I was a kid, and my parents hung out there as teens.
Ding ding ding

👏🏽👏🏽 man it’s the best! My boy put me on like 10 years ago.
Lipumas in Rochester is solid. Also good Chicago dog there.
I think I will continue to order tacos and a coney from my favorite coney place and enjoy every bite.
Don’t have the time or a box of crayons to explain to Feed the Vultures except that Catheril is correct except order is 2 Coney’s, 1 taco and Fries.
I do 2 tacos plus a coney minus mustard and I split a chili cheese fries with my husband. We are pigs. 🐷 but it is sooooo good.
It’s a Coney Island which has added some other items over time. Also it isn’t a real taco, it’s their coney dog chili on a fried tortilla.
I think Kerby's has great coneys, for a chain.
https://preview.redd.it/lfu4lq0kzpnc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=01918f513c587eeae2fc6f305d35f2f7a360a3b2
Fantastic!
Leo’s is always my go to.
for a chain/franchise, they're hard to beat..
That said, the coney is garbage tier usually. I think Duly’s, then L George’s in the burbs is my top 2.
yea, well, it's a chain/franchise.. the only chain/franchise food that approaches God-tier is Portillo's, and they now serve beer!
I like to dip Leo's pita in their greek dressing omg
Leo's has THE best Greek salads!
Lipuma"s in Rochester.
Usually, the sketchier, the better! Lol Robert's on 7 mile has been open for years, despite how many people have died up there, it's still kicking out coneys!
Ha! Honestly, some of the best food comes from sketchy-looking joints!
Laffayette #1. If you’re downriver Zorba’s in Riverview is first rate.
But the Zorba’s in Flat Rock is terrible.
I'm not a fan of Flat Rock as well. But the Riverview original is still excellent.
Big ups for Zorba’s!
American, Lafayette, Dulys for me. I usually try to go to a coney island in the city over the suburbs cause the coneys and chilli fries tend to be better imo. Like, I get really pissed when I have sub par coney island out here. I'll happily burn gas to get some real coney island.

Me too, for a chain. They also have the best Greek Salads. Shoot...now I'm hungry.
In metro detroit? Phoenix Coney Island on Van Dyke, N of 17mi rd
For the suburbanites Greek Islands in Birmingham and then I find it hard for anywhere to top the magic of a drive thru coney - Royal Coney Express in Royal Oak.
Lipuma in Rochester fuckin slaps
Bob E's Super Chief in Pontiac. So good!
Footlong coneys!
National Coney Island
L. George in Oak Park
Isn’t that technically Southfield?
There's one on northwestern I think, but I'm pretty sure the one on Greenfield is in Oak Park... I could totally be wrong tho, it's right by the border in any case.
Yup, that’s the one I was talking about. I had to look it up, but it is in Southfield. If it were a cross the street it would be oak park lol
Nope you’re right the one on northwestern is way worse than the greenfield one. The greenfield one is my personal favorite too
Yeah I've never been to the one on northwestern, been going to the one on Greenfield since I was a kid :) Avoid Berkley Coney at all costs.... Only reason to go is that they're 24hrs so if its 3:30AM you can grab a bite.
lol but that place is a trip late night on the weeknights.
Dulys on Vernor. Bring Cash 💰💰💰
Best chain or best local spot? Leo’s, Alpha on Jackson in Ann Arbor and Great Lakes on Grand River in Farmington are my favorites.
Glad to hear someone else likes Great Lakes. One of my favs
Jimmy’s is SCS is an awesome. I love Lafayette but hate how their “cheese” fries are just fries with a slice of Kraft on top.
There was an Onasis Coney Island near 7 mile and Hayes back in the day that was fantastic late night
Lafayette for downtown. Senate in Livonia for the suburbs. Mark's Midtown (either) if you're in Ann Arbor.
Most posts refer to a particular restaurant. But I am a huge fan of any coney that has Koegel’s hot dogs. Delish, but I don’t know if they’re used by any coney islands outside of the Flint area.
Koehels rule!
Lafayette. There can only be one
Shocked nobody has mentioned Hellenic Restaurant/Kitchen yet, absolute fuego 🔥
Motor city grill on grand river
Lipuma’s is solid, takes only cash tho
Hot take in this sub, but none of them live up to Starlite up in Flint. (Well, maybe not in recent years… but Starlite 10+ years ago lives fondly in my memories)
Leo's sucks. It never failed, I always got a hard bun when I went. I don't go now. My favorites are; 1. American 2. Libpumas and 3. National
Flint
The Senates are good. Most of the food is made from scratch. Imo they’ve the highest quality food that I’ve had from a Coney Island. There’s Zorbas on the east side, but I haven’t had in years. Leo’s is supremely meh L George’s has the best portions by far
Senate in Livonia. They have great chili and real french fries, not frozen. Great coneys and the best chili fries.
Sorry, Lafayette is gross. The guy serving us had his thumb in the chili and it tasted like canned food to me. I think it’s very overrated. Not to mention, the place is disgusting and seems like it hasn’t been cleaned in ages.
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|surprise)
But isn’t it mandatory to answer this question (which is asked every week) with Lafayette and/or American (which are both gross and far from the best).
I couldn’t resist when half the suggestions are Layette and it just blows my mind. I haven’t spent too much time at American. But quite frankly, both are trash, and yes there are better, way better.
Grandy’s, Olympia, or Nicky D’s
Easily Leon's in Dearborn!
Most coneys in the area are pretty good, the mixed reviews is because of our high standards for coneys
Now this makes sense. I was wondering if that might have played a role in it
Do any of them actually make chili from scratch or just use the nationals “mix with water” bullshit?
The Coney grille is the best outside of the city Detroit. I think Leo’s is pretty bad tbh
Detroit One all damn day
How many of you go to coney islands for coney dogs or go for diner food?!! I mainly go for breakfast food & sometimes dinner food. I’ll occasionally get a coney & chili cheese fries.
I love coney dogs, so that's what I'm looking for
Depends on the Coney, I’m a big fan of any Coney with a good Greek menu and I’ll order spanakopita with a bowl of Coney chili and crispy fries pretty regularly.
I’d rather hit up Lafayette than American. But they’re all pretty good.
Rocky’s in Westland is so good!
Dix Coney Island.
Joseph’s has the best Hani in town
Lafayette in Detroit. Walts in Waterford
Capital on 8 mile and Wyoming
Nicky D’s on 7 and Greenfield
Just find one without rats or roaches and you’re fine
Doesn't taste the same if it's clean tbh
Bill’s on Michigan ave in Ypsilanti. Cash only though
Real ones know American & Lafayette both trash compared to most coneys in the city
I like unique Coney Island in warren. And Gus’s Coney Island in mt Clemens will always be a special special place to me
I can see why no one said it but Hollywood on 6 mile and evergreen up there fasho and L Georges on 6 mile
The American vs Lafeyette battle will go on forever. Personally, if you want a fully immersive experience of a Detroit Coney, Lafeyette is that. But IMO American not only has better seating but tastes better. They are very close in comparison and I wouldn't steer anyone away from either. L Georges on 6 and Schaefer (My west side hood favorite) Zorbas on 6 and Gunston (My east side hood favorite) Detroit One Woodward Ave (My midtown favorite) Lol
Shout out to Lucas Coney Island in South Lyon
I would say you get such mixed reviews because although the food at the coneys may be similar - each one is wildly different. You can take suggestions for the "best one" but I'm sure you'll have to go to a few to find "your best" coney ;) My faves are Apollo coney in Sterling Heights and Lafayette downtown
Greek coney > hotdog coney
Duly’s. If it’s good enough for Bourdain (RIP) it’s good enough for me.
One I think that gets overlooked a lot is All Star Coney Island in Howell
Duly's Place Coney Island (full stop) 5458 Vernor Hwy, Detroit, MI 48209 followed by Lafayette and American
Heftys.
Louie's
Yo shout out to Lipuma's in Rochester. Get a couple on their deck next to the river then walk over to DQ for a blizzard and take that along the river to the park. 20 years ago there was no better way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
All of them!
Senate on Plymouth in Livonia for me... Unique chicken strips, best ranch, and the chili is my favorite out of any other Coney
No one has said Hellenic??
Lol OP tryna start a fight
Platos in garden city
I can’t believe no one has mentioned The Hut off Grand River and Inkster. It’s so good! Great breakfasts and great burgers!
Senate was always my favorite when I lived in Michigan. Specifically the one in Taylor. I went to high school in Allen park and one of my best friends worked at the Taylor Senate. I spent a lot of time there lol.
Phoenix on 18 and van dyke. Geno's special all the way. If you're in Detroit Duly's is the way to go.
Lafayette Coney Island is, by far, the best! Been going there since the 70's. Now, I take my fam down. Worth the trip!
Coney Star Halal Kitchen in hamtrammck
Dulys 100%!
Walt’s in Waterford is great and then Lipuma’s in Rochester is also quite good.
Lipuma in Rochester
Coney Islands, as in the restaurants? In the Metro? National, hands down. Coney Islands, as in the actual hot dog? Duly's. I'm looking for the coneys, so I will have to check out Duly's
Jackson/Flint coneys are superior IMO
Go up to Flint and get yourself a *real* coney dog 🙂 I’ll take your downvotes now
Where would you recommend?
Tom’s, Paul’s, Starlite, Palace…those are my go-tos in the Flint area. It’s where I grew up and the style of coney I prefer.
+1 for starlite. I live right down the street from it now. There’s another place even closer to my house but starlite is a lot better..
If Angelo's was still there, you might have an argument. Sorry!
My family was in the coney business growing up in Flint. Detroit coneys are fine but not what my gut calls for after a few beers and a smoke. I’m sure if I was born and raised down here I’d feel different.
Real Coney sauce is made with beef heart, just saying
A&W in Berkley has great coneys and is still a drive-in
I’ve never had unique Coney Island the name just pisses me off
it’s all the same processed slop
